About the Artwork

Falling Through the Cracks started with photographs of the intricately designed sidewalks of Prague. A local resident ignores these stunning mosaic footpaths the way a native Washingtonian passes hurriedly by the White House. But as a tourist, I was captivated by the sidewalk patterns and made art from art.

Method: On the computer, I fill a whole sheet of paper from individual photos or tiles. Then I carefully cut out images and shapes by hand from the patterned paper, dubbed wallpaper.

About me: I'm an early childhood educator living in Washington, DC, and for many years, I had a business sewing fabric baby gifts. But recently I put the sewing machine away and turned to collage because after working with young children, paper and glue seem to have stuck.

This is the only piece where the photo is not from Prague. This is a floor from Venice, most likely Church of San Marco. The photo was taken by the friend in whose memory I created Sunshine: Last Day.
