USDAA Philosophy on Dog Agility
What is USDAA's philosophy on dog agility?
USDAA promotes dog agility as a athletic, spectator sport in its own right, as it offers enthusiasts a variety of competitive classes in addition to the standard agility class, such as gambler's choice where handlers choose the obstacles to be performed, team relay where handlers team up to run a course, jumpers where competitors demonstrate their training and handling expertise with their dogs performing a fast course comprised of various styles of jumps and hurdles, and snooker agility where handlers choose their route on course following the principal strategy rules of the billiards game of snooker.
Though agility is a competitive, athletic sport, USDAA also promotes dog agility as a community sport, as it offers families a fun alternative for spending quality time with their pet, whether in the Championship, Performance or Junior Handler program. The obstacles are relatively easy to train, and a handler and their dog can do reasonably well and have fun without the hours of training required in other competitive canine activities; however, as with any sport, considerable time and energy is required to be highly competitive. As a commitment to promoting dog agility in the community, USDAA has developed a junior handler program for school-age children and their pets to encourage their participation and to teach responsible pet ownership.

9th USDAA Trials Report - 160711!
We are pleased to announce that our USDAA participants have surpassed our target of 50 supporters, thanks to all USDAA participants and those who love this great sport and the fun of doing agility with our beloveth Canine Partners.
Yesterday was our 9th USDAA Sanctioned Trials 2011. We were honour to have Mr. Kenneth Tatsch, our President of USDAA Inc to grace our event. We also have our sponsor Mr. Vincent John and Andy representing CASA FERA from Hong Kong, China and thanks to their generous sponsor of our prizes.
We were blessed with an excellent weather after a scary Saturday whole day rain storm. Miraculously, the weather were beautiful, the ground was fairly dry and we all had a swell day. This 9th USDAA, we were focusing on the full PERFORMANCE TITLING programmes.
We started with Snooker and Gamblers Class. Participants were presented with various challenges and technical difficulties however without forgoing the speed element of the sport, making the dog agility a continuous movement of speed, control and handling.
After our lunch break, we continue with the Pairs Relay, Beat-the-Clock games, the standard agility and the jumpers class. We have progressed tremendously, as we have participants in Performance 2 Standard Agility and Performance 2 and Performance 3 Jumpers Class.
We have in total 18 Qualifications awarded and many went home with our beautiful Medallions from Hong Kong, China, thanks to CASA FERA.
Both our guests from Hong Kong and our President, enjoyed the event and were impressed with the qualities and skills of our participants.
Once again we cannot but appreciate our volunteers of our event; Ann, Bernie, Gail, Catherine, Lynn, Gillian, Alloysius, a BIG THANK to YOU, without you we will NOT have our USDAA Trials.
Last but not lest, we also wanted to thank all participants for always supporting USDAA and this Great Sport of Dog Agility and I'm confident that we can see more growth in this community and let's all work together to see this sport reach another level in Singapore.

The Intro-Game - The-Pacman-Manaic!
This week let’s discuss on our next Intro-game known as The-Pacman-Manaic! This game originates from the old-time pacman game, where the smiley face gets to eat a super bill and turn into a superpower for a limited time period.
In Agility Context, the power pills are two jumps separated by an Open Tunnel. These power pills can be taken in any direction and once it’s taken correctly, the next 3 obstacles that followed, will be awarded 10 fold of the points awarded. And after the 4th obstacle, any obstacle taken will be reverted to the original point system and until the next power bill is taken the 10 folds systems will start again.
The scoring system is 1-3-5 but when you taken the power pills the next 3 obstacles will be 10-30-50. (Depending on the points that are assign to individual obstacle) The time period given to the competitor at 8/10” height class is 55 seconds and 12/16” height class is 50 seconds. The Pause Table will be the end; all competitors need to reach back on the table to stop the clock. The team with the highest score will win the game.
Always have fun & stay positive!

USDAA Games & the Intro-Games
USDAA Games are Snooker, Gamblers and Pairs Relay in both Championships Titling and Performance Titling Programmes. All these games require the team to strategize their approaches on the course in order to get the highest points to gain a qualification and win the class.

Beat-the-Clock - Here are the rules of the game;
1. You are given 50-60 seconds to collect as much points as you want,
2. However the points collected are not recognize until you have bank in the point at the Pause Table, (Pause Table is the bank where you deposit your points)
3. Only upon successfully attempts on the obstacle, you will be awarded the points,
4. The team with the highest points win the games,
5. Obstacles can be taken in uni-directions,
6. The starting point is also the Pause Table.
We will be discussing the other games on our next topics.

Sport Dog Owners Intro to Prescription Medication!
Sport Dog Owners Intro to Prescription Medication
Sports dogs work as hard as their human counterparts. They compete in different events which test a dog’s speed, endurance, strength, and intelligence. Nevertheless just like human athletes, sports dogs are susceptible to injury. The most common forms are muscular trigger points, back and neck problems, and cruciate ligament injury.
Although prevention is always better, by maintaining the dog’s health and fitness, sometimes injuries are just unavoidable. And when they do happen, the injured dog must get the most appropriate treatment. These injuries affect a dog’s mobility and may contribute to the early development of dog arthritis.
To treat muscular trigger points, physical therapy and massage will suffice. Neck and back pain can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs or painkillers. In some cases, surgery may be needed. However, a cruciate ligament injury will require surgery. There are many procedures available to remedy the injury such as extracapsular suture, tibial plateau leveling osteotomy, or tibial tuberosity advancement. It is important that dog owners discuss all available procedures carefully with their veterinarian as there is no one superior procedure; all have their advantages and their drawbacks.
Prescription Medication
For sport dogs, pain is almost an unavoidable hazard of the job. Prescription medicine is an important aspect in the treatment of injuries and in the rehabilitation process after surgery or injury. There are many anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers available. What is important is choosing the right drug. Efficacy must be balanced with safety. Therefore, a dog’s overall health should always be the top priority.
The following are prescription medications that are commonly used in veterinary medicine: • NMDA antagonists or neuropathic pain medicines help reduce pain by “calming down” overactive neural pain pathways. Common NMDA antagonists include Gabapentin, Amantadine, Ketamine and Amitryptaline. • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs are drugs which inhibit the pro-inflammatory action of COX-enzymes. Nonetheless, they have side effects such blood thinning, renal failure, and gastro-intestinal damage that can be fatal for some dogs. • Opioids provide stronger pain relief than other prescription painkillers and have very few side effects. They work by decreasing the brain’s awareness of pain. Examples of opiods are Tramadol, Morphine, Fentanyl, Buprenorphine, and Codeine. Most states and countries consider opioids as restricted substances, which make the sale and purchasing of the drug tricky. • Cortisone is a more potent anti-inflammatory than NSAIDs. It can help to settle “acute on chronic” pain. However, it should rarely be considered as a first option since it can exacerbate bone degeneration. Also, it should not be used for more than two to three times a year.
Prescription medicines on non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Rimadyl, Metacam, Previcox or Deramaxx

USDAA 2010 - A Year in Review
USDAA 2010 - A Year in Review
Posted Date: December 21, 2010
A look at USDAA's accomplishments in 2010 and some of what lies ahead for 2011.
2010 proved to be an exciting yet challenging year as we continued to pull together projects carried over from 2009. We began the year determined to make significant headway in web development for Group Services and electronic scorekeeping, and have made great progress. It was a slower process than anticipated, in part due to the fact that most groups only work with the system twice a year. As we entered the autumn months, we rolled out the first major refinements and put the developers back to work on other modifications that had been suggested by users during the year. These refinements will roll out through the first quarter of 2011.
Cynosport Games Venue
We entered 2010 searching for alternative venues for the Cynosport World Games and were able to sign with the Kentucky Exposition Center for the 2010 event. The year was intense as we began retooling the Games to fit the indoor venue. It was quite the endeavor, as we sought to move the event from two polo fields with open space to three buildings with constricted space. More than 1,000 hours of planning and research went into planning the 2010 event. Though far from perfect, Cynosport 2010 came off quite well for a first event in a new location.
On behalf of our staff and volunteer coordinators I extend a special thank you to all of those who expressed their appreciation for the hard effort that went into this year's event, in spite of the few glitches that popped up along the way. We also thank those of you who supported the event and those that took the effort to offer constructive suggestions along the way.
Since the conclusion of the 2010 event, we have been engaged in discussions with the Kentucky Exposition Center regarding issues encountered in 2010. Our biggest concern was the dirt surface, for which they have pledged to find a solution to be sure we don't encounter that problem again. We are exploring options to reduce the event back to its previous five day format (actually four and one-half). More discussions and planning will be required to determine if that can in fact be done. But we recognize the hardship on everyone to have the event span the extra day.
Upon representations of the facility management, we believe that we will have a markedly improved situation with the surface in Kentucky on a repeat visit, so we will return to Louisville in 2011 with tentative dates of October 11-16. We have begun exploring some of the other issues and feel that we can build on what we learned in 2010 to make the event even better. We ask, however, that competitors do not race out and book hotels just yet. We have been studying the hotel situation and found that rates are extremely high at the moment. If rooms get booked now, it will remove any chance of us negotiating lower contract rates for you. We started working on this process back in November, but it is difficult to get things done during the holiday season. It is a top priority for January. So please be patient and wait for us to post the information by the end of January.
Veterans Program
Final regulations for a new Veterans Program are being prepared for release by year-end, and the web developers are working diligently to make necessary changes to the Group Services portion of the web site to facilitate registering Veterans classes and including them in the test schedule and entry form. The Veterans Program is scheduled to go into effect for shows beginning in March 2011.
USDAA Store Temporarily Closed
A setback late this year was our USDAA Store, which was having operational issues and needed to be updated. We have closed it temporarily, but it will be back in 2011 with a more robust storefront. In the meantime, the new DVD on the 2010 Cynosport Games is being sold through www.lightfootlivery.com, one of our vendors at the Cynosport Games. We are offering discounts for subscribers as well as those who purchased the live stream package. Discounts can be combined for 25% off the suggested retail price of the three disc set.
Launch of Cynosport.TV and Video Services
With issues surrounding our video services on usdaa.com in 2009, we moved the video services to a new web site at www.cynosport.tv for 2010. The site is backed by a global distribution network and is being tied to expandable resources to reduce the likelihood of disruptions on the server. Further enhancements have been made to the site since October, and the site now offers an enjoyable experience for those with high-speed broadband access. For those of you yet to explore it, the site provides a simple approach to accessing video. Anyone with active video accounts on usdaa.com have had their accounts moved to Cynosport.tv.To access, simply go to www.cynosport.tv and log in. Links to video on usdaa.com will soon be redirected to Cynosport.tv.
Please note that the Cynosport.tv service is being developed for public interests as well as that of dog sport enthusiasts. As a result it has been disconnected from the usdaa.com web site. A separate log-in is presently required to access the video player, but as we further develop the site, we will be seeking to integrate the log in from usdaa.com and make some features available to USDAA.com subscribers.
We will begin building video inventory in 2011 on Cynosport.tv and will be offering free streaming services to groups for local USDAA events.Interested groups should contact the USDAA office after the first of the year to learn what is involved. The first live streamed event for the new year is the Carolina Piedmont Agility event in late January. The event is an IFCS four-star qualification event and should be of interest to everyone with the new International Handlers Challenge classes, in addition to tournament qualifying classes. We will keep everyone updated on our developments at Cynosport.tv through the usdaa.com news page. In the meantime, be sure to take a look and read the About Us section on cynosport.tv for more details.
Changing Climate at Local Events
During the past year, we have seen more competitors opt to more organize more local events rather than travel to out-of-town events, which has created a challenge for some groups. Groups have worked to adapt to the changing environment, and we feel as the economy recovers that everyone will benefit as the footprint of USDAA will be larger and be able to handle the growing number of entries that should result on a local level. A negative impact has created some issues relative to distance and timing of events in some areas of the country. These will be addressed in coming weeks as part of a review and assessment of regional needs. We are seeking feedback from the affected parties and will update the appropriate policy statements for scheduling events.
Rules & Regulations and Policy Statements
One disappointment of the year was the lack of progress in publishing a new rule book. As mentioned in last year's note, we were going to broaden our base of input through the formation of a committee to work jointly with the Board in tendering possible refinements to the rules, policies and procedures. Throughout 2010, I visited with a number of individuals from different parts of the country and collaborated on ideas, identifying certain needs, prioritizing others, and identifying several prospects to serve on an ongoing basis. While the committee was not formalized, much progress was made in 2010, which is yet to be evident on the outside. We will be increasing the Board size by two and establishing one or more committees to support the Board in order to provide more feedback on key issues - a key goal for 2011.
Office Restructuring and Staffing
We began the year reorganizing the office positions and it took a while to acclimate to the new structure, as the staff learned more of the nuances of operating under our new computer systems. We continue to monitor and assess workload and will be further balancing that load in coming months. In fact, we will be increasing the executive staff in the coming year to improve communications and to stay on top of various ongoing processes and projects that just have not been able to get the attention they require. Our goal is to be more responsive on more fronts and in addressing the needs of a still growing sport.
Thank you!
Finally, I want to thank our many supporters and all of you who have taken time to share with me your ideas and views to make USDAA a better venue this past year.
On behalf of myself and the USDAA Board and office staff, I wish all much success and happiness in 2011.
Ken
Kenneth Tatsch USDAA President
Opportunity Costs!
If I have one regret in my life, it will be not spending enough time to train and play with my dogs. I have been lucky to be blessed with so many great dogs. In my memory I had Max and Keesha, each has its unique unsurpassed quality. Due to my commitment, I have spent way too much time training people in Obedience, Agility, Flyball, and Frisbee. As a trainer myself, I will prepare my classes before my students come in for the lessons. I am guilty of not preparing myself with my training objective when training my own dogs. Without proper layout and lesson plans, how can I expect to achieve out of the training programme?
So in this NEW YEAR 2011, I want to devote more of my time to train and bond with my own dogs. I look at my present dogs, I have Benji, Millie and Jade. Being competitive also compel me to work towards my TOP dreams. I wanted to groom our 3rd National Obedience Champion in Singapore. The 2nd National Utility Champion (Obedience) in Singapore. I wanted to compete and win TOP 10 ranking at the USDAA Cynosport World Games in 2011!
Having the opportunity to raise some puppies, I can clearly see what the most sort after skills to have; Name Calling, Start line Stay, Left, Right and Close commands. Introduce your puppies its name is essential. If you cannot get your puppy to look at you, you have ZERO chance to get your dog to respond to you. Pairing its name with rewards is a perfect way to add value to its name. I.E. Everytime you call ‘Max’, C/T, pair this for 50-100 repetition, you should get a name to respond instantly. Start-line Stay are often overlook, but I deem it as necessary especially if you need to position yourself way ahead of the obstacle to give you a head start. Teach your dog to touch your guiding hand. Everytime you show your finger, the dog touches C/T, pair it for 5-100 repetition, you dog should understand to head toward your guiding hand and touch it on command. This touch game also get you an opportunity to train your dog restraint as in Stays.
Left and Right cue on commands are handy cue that will equip handlers to get into optimal position to nail the courses. Started at heel position, walk along with a treat, guide your dog to move along side on your left. Swing your right hand(outside arm) toward your dog head and lead your dog to turn away from you, and once completed your dog should have executed a left turn and back on your right side of your position and remember to C/T. Again pair this for 50-100 repetition on both left and right side, your dog should response to your body cue for a left and right time readily.
The last by not least command will be Close command. Training your dog to work close toward your body when ask. Put your dog on sit stay on heel and take a step forward. Provide a close cue for your dog to move into heel position on your right and C/T. Pair this and repeat 50-100 times on both the left and right side. You should use a separate command for left and right side of your body.
With these necessary skills set plus agility foundation training , you will be ready to enrol your dog into Dog Agility Competition. However, please consult your veterinarian for your dog’s health and your trainer for your dog’s readiness for competition.
Happy reading and I hope this form part of your training repertoire of your dog’s agility career.
I hereby Wishes All A Merry and A Blessed Christmas! Happy Holidays!
As always have fun and stay positive!
Cheers

PUPS 8th USDAA Trials, 11,12 SEPT 2010
In our 8th USDAA Sanctioned Trials, we have x1 in 12", x6 in 16", x14 in 22" & x1 in 26" Class. The most competitive class were the 22" and 16" ....... x12 BCs, x4 Shelties, x2 Fox Terriers, x1 JRT, x1 Samoyed, x1 Schnauzer and x1 Whippet......a great variety of breeds in International Agility Competitions.
Rovering Reporter on our 8th USDAA Trials!
Last weekends, Our 8th USDAA International Dog Agility Sanctioned Trials was a blast! Two full days of action-packed activities. We wanted to thank the Judges, Mr Rowel De Guia from the Philippines and Mr Dexter Sim from our home country Singapore, for judging our events.
On Saturday dated 11 September 2010, we had our Championships Titling Events such as Starters Standard Agility, Advanced Standard Agility, Starters Jumpers, Advanced Jumpers and our games such as Starters Gamblers, Starters Pairs Relay & Starters Snookers Classes. And on Sunday dated 12 September 2010, we had our Performance Titling Events and our International Tournament. The Performance Titling Events are P1 Standard Agility, P2 Standard Agility, P1 Jumpers, P2 Jumpers and the Tournaments Classes are Grand Prix of Dog Agility World Championships qualifier and Master Dog Agility Steeplechase World Championships qualifier.
We had a total of 154 runs on Saturday and 58 runs on Sunday. Out of 212 runs, we have 29 that earned a qualification of the classes they enrolled in. What is worth commenting is that we have 2 qualification in Starters Gamblers, 3 qualification in Starters Snooker and 6 qualification in Starters Pairs Relay Classes. We are seeing more qualification in our game section. Traditionally we are strong in the Standard Agility & Jumpers section.
This was the first trials in Singapore that we didn't get wet, both days we were blessed with great weather, well it rain for just 1-2 minutes in both days. All thanks to our God whom we trust. We also wanted to thank all our volunteers, photographers, video-men, competitors and helpers in lending a hand or two to make last weekends trials truly a blast! We all had fun and we look forward to yet another Successful USDAA Sanctioned Trials in the near future.
Our next 9th USDAA Sanctioned Trials will be in March/April 2011. Keep watch on the upcoming event coming your way.
Last but not least, we wanted to thank all spectators who make their way there to support our competitors in action. I'm sure they have enjoyed watching the top dog teams in Singapore competing last weekends.
Congrats to all Winners, a well deserved wins for all.

NEWS:
**The facility will have a table up during check-in for purchase of parking passes for the event. The rate is $6/day and provides for in and out privileges for the number of days purchased. Note that the public rate is $8. Once in the gate, if you have a pass for following days, you will be able to enter and exit during the day without paying each time. So when you purchase your parking pass, make sure you ask for the one that covers the entire event and has in-and-out privileges.
Q&A
Q: Is it possible to have a contingency dog for Performance Versatility Pairs? Both my dogs are qualified for PVP, but I'm planning to enter only one. My first preference is a dog that's having surgery, since he is the more consistent performer. But if he should be unable to compete following the surgery, can I substitute my other dog (same height), or would my partner get thrown into the draw pool? What if this happens before the closing? Can partners be changed after the entry is sent in but before the closing?
A: Naming a contingency dog is not permitted under the rules. Every year a number of dogs have to withdraw for a variety of reasons, leaving several unmatched teams/pairs. Should this happen to you, there will likely be others to match up with you; this will be done randomly by the trial secretary. Competitors who find themselves without a partner unexpectedly should be sure the Secretary is aware of the situation as soon as possible.
Changes can be made to a team by the teammates before closing. Contact the trial secretary to do so.
Q: Given the limited indoor crating area, will there be any parking set aside for exhibitors who would rather crate in their (non-RV) vehicle? How far from the building is the exhibitor parking?
A: Crating space is not really limited. We will reallocate space if we have a larger-than-expected entry. Although we are still working on all the parking details, we do know that crating out of a vehicle may have some cons. This is a public facility and there will be other events going on. The closest parking spots are probably 100 feet or so from the buildings, and access will be shut off to some doors during show hours for security reasons. People will be directed to use provided entry points. Also, some entry points (not all), will be for spectators too, so congestion could slow down access. There will be no parking areas reserved for those who choose to keep their dogs in their cars. All parking information will be included in the confirmation letter.
Q: I have a dog who is scheduled for minor surgery a few days before closing. If the worst should happen and he is unable to compete, is there any (even partial) refund of the entry fee if the dog must be withdrawn for medical reasons? Does it make a difference whether this determined before or after the September 14 closing date?
Q: Since USDAA is accepting credit cards for Cynosport, is there a way to enter online or must the entry arrive via US mail?
A: There is no online entry. Please use the credit card form that is available on the last page of the entry form.
Q: My question is, can we put a substitute handler down on our entry for nationals just in case something would happen to me (ex. sprained ankle/illness)?
Q: Will there be vendors that sell raw food available?
A: Yes. Primal Pet Foods is one of them. You might want to contact them directly to determine if they will have what you need.
Q: I am going to be running four dogs and I am concerned about the distance from the crating to the rings. Can you tell me how far it will be? Additionally, if there is not enough time to retrieve dogs between runs, will there be somewhere I can setup a temporary crate?
A. No temporary crating is allowed; exceptions will be made for finalists on Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday. Crating is between the two competition halls and is no more than 50-75 yards away from the action.
Q. Could you tell me if all the rings for the agility portion of the event are going to be indoors or under cover?
A. All agility rings are indoors.
Q. Is there going to be anywhere on site where dogs can be off leash?
A. Provisions are being made for outdoor exercise areas (off-leash exercise will be at competitor's own risk).
Q: Does the handler who qualifies a dog in Dog Agility Masters/Performance Versatility Pairs at a local qualifier have to be the same handler who runs the dog at Cynosport, or can someone else run the dog?
A: Another person may handle the dog at Cynosport. The handler limitation applies only to bye advancements earned in Grand Prix/Performance Grand Prix and Steeplechase.
Q: What weave spacing will be used at the Games?
A: All weaves will be in compliance with the current rules which state that poles shall be set officially at 22" (55cm) spacing when measured center to center, with tolerance in construction permitted of plus or minus 2" (5cm). Weave pole distances will be equivalent in all Cynosport rings.
Q: Can we wear team T-shirts? What about club/training center shirts?
A: Team and club shirts can be worn providing that they don't violate the "no sponsor" rule. So if your shirt reads like an advertisement, looks like a billboard, includes a phone number or website URL, or has a list of sponsors on it, that's not acceptable. Wearing a USDAA affiliated group name on a shirt is fine.
Q: What happens if one dog or handler on a team gets injured/sick after the close for entries or the event starts? Do the other dog/handlers on the team still get to compete in the team events for individual scores - or are they limited to only continuing with the individual events they entered (i.e. Grand Prix, Steeplechase etc.)?
A: Unfortunately, at every Cynosport Games, some teams face this problem. At check-in, the team members must notify the secretary or her designate if there is a problem with the team. As outlined in the event schedule under Team/Versatility Pairs Entries, all substitutions must be made prior to the start of the tournament and the secretary is the one who will make those substitutions. Remember that in Team, only two jump heights are allowed. The secretary will take all needy dogs/teams and make the greatest number of complete teams from the dogs available. If there are odd dogs, they may compete in the individual Team classes for awards and tournament top ten points, but that would be all.
Q: If the RV parking area is locked, are we stuck in all night?
A: No, for safety reasons, someone will always be available to unlock the lot.
Q: My mother and two friends will be traveling with me. Will they be allowed in the crating area? // Does my spouse/partner get entry into the Games with my entry?
A: Each competitor gets one wrist band for a helper. Wrist bands are tickets to the event for competitors. Other family members and friends will have to pay for entry into the facility. People with wristbands can bring spectators into the crating area with them once the spectator has paid to enter the event.
Q: Check-in is Tuesday afternoon and the first class is in the evening. Now am wondering if we really need to arrive Monday evening (we have an eight hour drive). If we arrive by four will we have time for check-in and walk through of the evening class?
A: We will announce these times when the secretary has accountered for all the entries. With an eight hour drive, you could leave at 5am and arrive on site in the early afternoon. That way you'll save on the hotel plus arrive in time for the evening class no matter what time it starts.
Q: Would you please explain the dress code as pertains to corporate logos other than USDAA? Does that mean I cannot wear a shirt with a Nike logo or a Life is Good logo? Or does it really just mean that I can't wear a shirt from someone sponsoring me?
A: Companies that are apparel manufacturers are fine, like Nike, Reebok, Polo by Ralph Lauren, and so on. These are brands of clothes sold through regular apparel retail outlets. If a company is in the business of something other than apparel and their name is on the clothing, those clothes will not be allowed. Examples of companies that may not appear on clothing include dog food companies, pet supply companies, pharmaceutical companies, equipment suppliers, magazines, and so on. This would also include any "store-branded" items as well.
Q: Is it possible to get a better map of the facility so that people could see what the crating area will be like? The one on the facility's website isn't helping me.
A: We are currently trying to get better drawings to distribute. The online facility map is available at http://www.kyexpo.org/facilityInfo/pavilion.html. The walk way to Broadbent Arena and West Hall do not show on this link. We've pasted a better drawing below. Note that the drawing shows 10' x 10' booths drawn in. That's the facility's standard drawing showing how to optimize booths used in the space. Please ignore those booths because they are not part of our set up.
The facility is an open cement floor with a 28' peaked ceiling with overhead doors for loading and unloading on the west and north sides. There are columns 25' apart on the center in the kenneling area.
Q: What do we do with the dogs if we attend the night at Churchill Downs? Will it be OK to leave them in the vehicles or leave them at the site? Also a friend in an RV wants to attend, if I took her in my car, would I be able to get her back to the site afterwards?
A: Churchill Downs is off-site, so we recommend other accomodations for your dog during the event. We are currently working on some options for crating your dogs in safety while you are away.
If the weather is cool, dogs could be left in cars, but we don't recommend that. Please use common sense when leaving your dog in a parking lot. Keep in mind that an unlocked parking lot could be susceptible to theft. In fact, you should consider the risk of theft any time you leave your possessions unattended.
All RVers should receive parking passes with in-and-out privileges, so there shouldn't be any problems getting back to the site to drop your friend off, as long as she takes the permit with her.
Q: Can we only wear polo shirts throughout the event?
A: Other attire may be worn, but it should reflect the proper image. Keep in mind that this is a public sporting event, so dress accordingly.
Q: From what I'm hearing, it seems like crating assignments might be being made based on when entries are received. If so, does that give a slight preference to the earlier entries?
A: There are no preferential spots. Those requesting spots together with others should send them in together; the earlier these are in, the easier it will be to assign adjacent spots.
Q: Are the crate spaces just taped off on the floor or will there be barriers of some sort?
A: They will be taped on the floor. Pipe and drape will separate the kenneling area from the public walkway through the building.
Q: Regarding the host hotel shuttle to/from Expo grounds: do they allow dogs on the shuttle or is it for people only?
A: Leashed dogs will be allowed to ride the shuttle. The host hotel has two 12-passenger vans for shuttle to the airport and/or Expo grounds. They say that some people walk, though it is a hike across the parking lots. Competitors should allow extra time for shuttles.
Q: What's the best way to make a reservation at the host hotel?
A: The Crowne Plaza has a special website for booking the rooms under our block. Information about rates and pet deposit is on the hotel's website for booking reservation for this event. See the travel information page athttp://www.usdaa.com/se_hotels.cfm for more info and a link to the reservation site.
Q: I have a bye in the Performance Grand Prix. On the Cynosport entry I filled out to run in the semifinals. Do I also have the option to run in the quarterfinals without jeopardizing my standing to run in the Semifinals?
A: No, you may not enter the quarterfinals if you have a bye to the semifinals. Doing so forfeits your bye status.
Q: I have volunteered to coordinate the crating space for a group of people. Is it okay if I do one form for the group and request approximately 10 spots and pay for it all mystelf? Or, should each person do their own form and pay when they submit their paperwork?
A: If you want several spaces together, or as close as they can be to one another, one person needs to submit a single request for all the spots and pay for them all.
Q: The information on the website mentions a "finite amount of space" for crating. Is a competitor allowed to rent more than one space?
A: Yes, a competitor can rent more than one space for crating. The "finite amount of space" is mentioned because reserved crating is within the confines of a building as listed on the crating reservation form. It does not mean that a competitor is limited in the number of crating spaces they can reserve.
Q: Will we be allowed to stack crates?
A: Yes, but only if deemed by us to be safe to do so. Generally, this would be thought to be one crate stacked on top of another one of equ

What is Dog Agility & Jumpers?
Standard, Regular, or Agility: This is a numbered course consisting of (usually) at least one of each of the three primary contact obstacles (not including the crossover) plus jumps, tunnels, and weave poles of various flavors. A novice course might consist of as few as 15 obstacles; a higher-level course might have 22. The dog must negotiate the obstacles in the correct order within the standard course time (SCT).
Jumpers or Jumping: This numbered course consists primarily of various types of jumps and, depending on the organization, also weave poles and tunnels. The dog must negotiate the obstacles in the correct order within the standard course time (SCT). The dogs achieve their fastest speed on these courses because there are no contact obstacles to slow them down.
What is Pairs Relay?
What is Pairs Relay?
Team, Pairs, or Relay: Two or three dog-and-handler teams each execute a portion of a Standard agility course, with the handlers exchanging a baton between sections.
What is Snooker?
Snooker: Loosely based on the billiard game of Snooker. The course has at least three red jumps, each numbered 1, and six other obstacles numbered 2 through 7. The dog accumulates points based on the obstacle's number. This also has two parts, an opening sequence and a closing sequence. In the opening sequence, the dog must complete a 1, then any obstacle numbered 2 to 7, a different 1 and any 2 to 7 obstacle (including the one already performed), and yet another different 1 and another 2-7 obstacle. For example, the dog could perform the red on the left for 1 point, the 7-point obstacle, the red in the middle for 1 point and then the 7-pointer again, then the red on the far side of the course and the 7-pointer one more time, for a total of 24 points in the opening. After successfully completing this, the dog must complete the obstacles 2-7, in order, for an additional possible 27 points. Failure to follow these rules exactly (such as knocking a bar or taking 2 reds in a row) results in the dog and handler being whistled off the course.
Strategy and entertainment value: The dogs might have to negotiate between other obstacles without taking them or make a difficult entry to the obstacle, often combined with a longer distance between the reds and the 7 so that it consumes more time to do the higher-point obstacle in the opening.
How to Run a Gamblers Agility Course
How to Run a Gamblers Agility Course
Run a Gamblers Agility Course Gambler's agility courses are courses that require a fair amount of forethought and communication between handler and dog. In a Gambler's course, the dog and handler earn points by completing a number of obstacles, all of which have a point value attached to them. The more difficult obstacles, such as the weave poles and contact obstacles have a higher point value, while the simpler obstacles earn the dog a lower point value. After an opening time frame in which the dog and handler complete obstacles for points, they must then complete a “gamble,” which is a series of obstacles the dog must run at a distance from the handler to make the points count. Upon successful completion of the point gathering and the gamble, the dog and handler’s points are tabulated, and the winners are chosen. A gambler's agility course provides fun and excitement for competitors and spectators alike.

With the 2010 Cynosport World Games taking place in a new location, some competitors have questions about the event. Here are some questions that folks are asking, along with the answers. We will be adding to this article as we receive more questions with answers that might benefit other competitors. Look for an "updated date" in this article's title to let you know if new information has been added.
If you have a question of your own, please contact bfender@usdaa.com for more information.
Q: The information on the website mentions a "finite amount of space" for crating. Is a competitor allowed to rent more than one space?
A: Yes, a competitor can rent more than one space for crating.
Q: Will we be allowed to stack crates?
A: Yes, but only if deemed by us to be safe to do so. Generally, this would be thought to be one crate stacked on top of another one of equal or larger size. Each case considered on its merit.
Q: Are dogs that are not entered allowed to be crated at the event?
A: We have no restrictions on unentered dogs in the crating area this year.
Q: If you are camping on site with an RV, will you need a crating space? In other words, how far away is the camping area from the dog agility rings?
A: That is a personal preference. RV spaces will not be as close to the venue as the crating areas in the hall. The RV slots are in lines perpendicular to the buildings (separated by a service drive and open space; the closest spots are an estimated 100' - 200' from the buildings). Those who are closest may find it convenient, while those farthest away may not. Others may not find even the closest positions to be desirable for walking across the pavement and service drive.
Q: What time will things start on Tuesday?
A: Check-in will begin in the afternoon and there will be a warm-up class in the evening.
Q: What time will the Grand Prix finals begin on Sunday? I don't want to miss anything, but I want to leave earlier enough to make it to work on Monday.
A: There is no way we can pinpoint a start time until at least several days after entries close. We typically start around 1:30pm or 2:00pm with the final program (Veterans, Juniors, and Grand Prix). This normally finishes up around 4:30pm or 5:00pm. Unexpected delays could cause the event to finish much later, though. We normally recommend that flights be booked no earlier than 7:00pm on Sunday in order to allow two hours for transportation, check-in, and security clearance; but, we cannot guarantee anything. If the Grand Prix finals is a "must see" for you (and it's really worth seeing!), then you should consider leaving on Monday or late night on Sunday to avoid rushing.
Q: The Performance form shows Performance Speed Jumping quarterfinals and a fee of $45. There are no PSJ quarters, just semifinals and finals. In years past we've paid the same fee as the Steeplechase semifinalists to enter the PSJ semifinals. Can someone clarify please? Shouldn't it be $36 for the semifinals, like it is for all other semis, not $45?
A: Yes, you are correct. It has been altered on the entry form to reflect the proper name and corrected fee of $36. Please download the corrected entry form. A credit card form has also been posted in the updated test schedule (see last page).
Other Games notes, some repeated from an earlier article on the topic:
* The entry form has been altered to include the credit card form, a definition of "x-pens," and the PSJ class name change and correct fee. Also, the cover page margin was adjusted so that it wil print properly.
*In a recent article on the USDAA News page, it was noted that copies of height cards should not be sent with Cynosport entries. That information is correct and the premium will be adjusted to match.
*Kennel spaces are smaller at the event site than those recent years. We also have a finite amount of space and have to allocate based upon expected attendance. The cost for the building is dramatically higher than what we paid for land and tents in Scottsdale. But, we have worked hard to keep the kennel space rate (and other fees) the same as last year's through other cost containment measures.
*The Cynosport premium states that no X-pens are allowed. To clarify, dogs may not be in an open X-pen; they must be housed in an enclosure consisting of four sides with a top and bottom, both of which are securely affixed to the sides to retain a fixed shape to add more rigidity and stability to the enclosure. While we recognize the desire to have the freedom of movement, we are concerned about each dog's safety. We will continually study and monitor the situation in hopes of making improvements where we can.
*Some competitors have expressed concern about the daily parking fee. Unfortunately, this is exclusively controlled by the Bureau that governs the facility at the Kentucky Expo Center and is a standard charge for all events. For those wanting to get away during the day without possible extra charges for leaving the site and returning, consider staying at the host hotel. Crowne Plaza, which is across the parking lot from the facility, offers a free shuttle service throughout the day. An exclusive USDAA hospitality hall is also available there for socializing in the evenings.
*Tom Kula will collect entries at the Regional in Michigan and overnight them for anyone entered in the show. There are two options for those who may get a bye at that event:
1. The secretary says she will accept a provisional entry in advance for those who want to send it in and possibly do a move-up. To do this, complete the entry form twice, one for each circumstance (getting the bye in Michigan and not getting the bye). Then submit two checks for the appropriate amount on each entry. Finally, notify the Secretary by email by the closing date as to which one to process. That eliminates the extra handling for submitting and obtaining refunds. If paying by credit card, same would apply. Submit two entry forms and two authorization forms for the appropriate amounts. Only one would be processed after the closing date.
2. Wait to submit your entry to Tom Kula at the Michigan regional. But don't forget to get it to Tom before the end of the show!
We can't wait to see you at the Games!
Reminder - Closing date for 8th USDAA Trials is this Fri 20 Aug 2010!!

USDAA Board Announces Rules Changes
Board Announces Rules Changes
Posted Date: July 1, 2010
Long awaited rule changes announced, including tournament changes for 2011 season.
The USDAA Board has released the following approved rule changes effective July 1, 2010, unless otherwise stated -
Weave poles specifications have been expanded to provide for greater tolerance in measure of spacing. It is important to note that existing weave pole sets that meet the 2009 specification will also meet the new specification. Effective immediately, poles shall be set officially at 22" (55cm) spacing when measured center to center, with tolerance in construction permitted of plus or minus 2" (5cm).
The tire jump definitioin has been expanded to permit an option to use a "displaceable" tire under a particular set of specifications stated below:
"Displaceable" shall mean that the tire may be separated or displaced upon impact with forces of no less than 18 pounds (18#). Tires that displace or separate with less force are not permitted.
For such a design, bungees and other flexible cables shall not be used as it would change the dynamics of the "break" force.
The tire components must remain suspended within the frame when separated or displaced so as not to have flying debris that could cause injury to the dog or handler.
When the tire is displaced or separated, a penalty of five standard fault points shall be assessed.
Other designs for displaceable tire jumps may be permitted provided designs are submitted for approval and it can be demonstrated that the designs are both functional under the rules above and safe. Such designs shall be submitted at least six months prior to their intended use. (Submission does not assure approval is forthcoming.)
For the tire jump in general -
Cabling on any tire jump, displaceable or non-displaceable, should not create a web in which a dog could become entangled.
The aperture of the tire shall measure approximately 20" (51cm), within standard tolerances (i.e., plus or minus 1" or 2.54cm). (This specification previously stated the aperture could be between 17" and 20".) To be effective January 1; earlier adoption is encouraged.
Time for a round shall be measured to the point where the dog crosses the finish line following performance of the last obstacle on a course that has a defined sequence (e.g., standard, jumpers, or relay classes), whether timed electronically or manually. (The measure of time was previously not stated in the rule book except with respect to the use of electronic timing; this rule is to establish consistency in measuring time between the two methods.)
Effective for the 2011 and subsequent tournament and/or calendar year -
Title name changes will be made in the Performance Program to more closely align titles between the Championship and Performance Programs (e.g., Performance Dog, Advanced Performance Dog, Master Performance Dog, Performance Dog Champion, etc.) Name changes will be implemented no later than January 1, 2011. Note that class names will remain unchanged (i.e., using levels 1, 2, 3 designations in correlation to Starters, Advanced and Masters levels, respectively). This is to avoid confusion in administration of entries in the classes of the two programs.
A new Veterans Program will be introduced for the primary titling classes. Details will be published on the new Veterans Program by October 1 to allow for class offerings beginning 2011.
The Performance Speed Jumping tournament will introduce Regional Championship classes and a Championship Quarterfinals class in the annual Championship event beginning in the 2011 tournament season (beginning September 13, 2010).
For the 2011 tournament season, a competitor/dog team must qualify in at least two of the three tournaments within a Program (Championship or Performance), in order to advance to the annual Championship event.
Previously announced and implemented rule changes -
The Standard Course Times for the Starters Jumpers Class shall be based upon the following table:
Jumping Heights
Standard Course Time Rates
Operating Range
Absolute Minimum Rate
12"
3.00 - 3.25 yds/sec
3.00 yds/sec
30cm
2.75 - 2.95 m/sec

Qualification Requirements for Entry at 2010 Cynosport World Games!
Qualification Requirements For Entry At 2010 Cynosport World Games
Posted Date: June 8, 2010
Putting rumors to rest......
To enter any tournament at the Cynosport World Games, a dog must have met the qualification requirements for that tournament at the jump height at which it is being entered. There is NO requirement for multiple tournament qualifications in order to enter the event.
Grand Prix, Performance Grand Prix and Steeplechase quarterfinals require two qualifications per the rules posted in the Forms & Documents Library on this site.
Performance Speed Jumping requires two qualifications per the rules also posted on the site.
Team and Performance Versatility Pairs requires just one qualification, and all dogs on a team/pair MUST be qualified as outlined in the rules.
All tournament qualifications are jump height specific, so a Q at 22" does not make the dog eligible to enter any tournament at 26".
USDAA Gets a New Look
USDAA Gets a New Look
As we enter the summer competition season, look for USDAA's new logo to appear on an award near you!
USDAA is in the process of phasing in its new logo, developed through input from competitors, spectators, and marketing consultants. The logo features the progression of a weaving dog (without the poles) over a crescent depicting the surface of the globe, with new stylized letter of the USDAA acronym. In printed form, the dogs are gradient color implying motion, while in solid color form, it appears as three dogs in three different positions while weaving.
The new logo has just been added to USDAA's Yahoo Groups and is being introduced on awards this summer. We have notified the major ribbon manufacturers of the logo change, so they may appear on ribbons and rosettes as early as June 1. Web site graphics will incorporate the new logo in the summer.
We recognize that many clubs have rosettes printed in bulk and may have stock that will carry them for several events. The new logo should be phased in as soon as is practical.
Group Organizers should refer to the more detailed post in the Event Organizers Yahoo Group for more information. If you are an event organizer and not part of the USDAA Event Organizers group, please let us know and we will get you added to this group. Visit the Group News page in the Group Services area regularly for updates and announcements.

Report on our 7th USDAA Sanctioned Trials!
7th USDAA International Dog Agility Sanctioned Trials on 17,18 April 2010!
The last trials was an interesting and full of unexpected situations. On 17 April 2010, Saturday was very dramatic. We had a very hot 7 hours where our Judges, helpers, timer, scorers, competitors all cooked, almost like a over walking toasted breads, haha.
We started off with our Championships Titling Programs and all went into a full swing as competitors all geared to conquer their respective classes.
At about 3.30 to 4.00pm, the weather sudden changes, from a Bright day to heavy thunderstorms with lighting. Due to safety of our dogs and competitors, we decided to call-off the competition at 4.00pm. We have to push to the next day for the balance events such as Starter Snooker, Starter Jumpers, Advance Jumpers and Beginners Jumpers.
On the next day, we started at 9.00am sharp and we managed to squeeze all Championships programs, run our Performance programs and our International Tournaments on Sunday. We can also have our Dog Frisbee Competitions for the Single-Disc and the Longest Throw Events. However the heavy rain came again at about 5.30pm and we have to stop our prize presentation.
We have excellent results to report, we have 45 dogs qualified for the Q ribbons. That makes our International Titled Dogs to 17. And we have 8 Teams qualified for the Master Dog Agility Steeplechase World Championships. A very good results to report from us in South East Asia, Singapore.
Our Prize Presentation will be reschedule to sometime these 2-weeks to rewards the winners their prizes and also a BBQ or something to thank all for their continuous support and thanks to the kind sponsor of Rusty's Favourite for making this Prize Presentation Possible.

Q&A ....What do I do if I find that a score is not correctly recorded?
Q&A
Posted Date: March 25, 2010
What to do when your records don't match what's posted on the USDAA site.
Question: What do I do if I find that a score is not correctly recorded?
Answer: USDAA strongly encourages competitors to check their scores immediately following their run at a trial to see if everything is tabulated correctly. If not, then a the scorekeeper should be notified right away so that a correction can be made. This allows there to be a timely query of the judge or scribe if appropriate. Keep in mind that, in the case of a query to the judge, the more time that lapses, the less likely that he or she will remember the round and be able to correct a situation. The competitor should then check the final posting of the score and be sure the records have been updated.
If you miss something at the show and are a subscriber to the USDAA Web site data services, you should log in and check your score once it is posted online. If the error isnt caught by the office review process, you may find that your title is not awarded when you might expect it. The USDAA office performs a top level review of qualifying and placement results, and checks are made as results are recorded. But as with any system, an occasional error, though rare, could go undetected for some time.
Should you find an error has slipped through the cracks, you only need to contact the USDAA office and they will check the paperwork and make any mechanical corrections. Unfortunately, only rarely can they resolve an error that is not reflected in the paperwork, so it is highly advised that you check each of your scores as a matter of routine at the show right after your run. Under USDAA Regulations, the competitor is permitted viewing access to scores ringside immediately following each run. A new policy statement has been published now that electronic scorekeeping is permitted (on the web in the Forms & Documents Library), and ringside posting of scores following each run is still required. Another policy to note: detailed scribe sheets are to be retained only for a year, so don't procrastinate in making such queries.
When submitting an inquiry to the office be sure to include the following information:
Your name
Dog's name
Dog's registration number
Dog's jump height
Name of club hosting the event
Date of event
Class and level in question
Details regarding the missing or errant record (e.g. "I thought my dog earned a Q, but it isn't listed", or "A Q is listed for my dog at this event, but we weren't entered.")
The USDAA staff is happy to research the information and make any necessary corrections. By providing the details listed above, that research can be accomplished more efficiently and a reply provided more quickly.

USDAA uniqueness........GAMES....Snooker
The Snooker games is like you are given 3 exchange coupons. And in this 'electronic' shop, there are 3 or 4 exchange stations, and you can only exchange the coupon in each exchange station once. Only upon successful exchange you can go to any part of the shop to claim one of your gift.
Part 1 is for the coupon exchange portion;
Part 2 is you need to negotiate through a course from number 2 to 7 without topping any items and you have usually 50 seconds to complete part 1 and 2.
Of course we are taking about Agility, here are the definition;

2010 USDAA Cynosport World Games Location and Dates
Posted Date: January 15, 2010
First step confirmed for relocation of Cynosport World Games.
We are pleased to announce that we have received a Letter of Commitment from the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville to host the Cynosport World Games on October 13 - 17, 2010. Options are also being offered for 2011 and/or 2012.
The facility is home to the Kentucky State Fair and the Kentuckiana Cluster of Dog Shows and has ample RV and general parking. It includes both indoor and outdoor areas for competition and other use. Much of the competition and the Finals will be held in the Broadbent Arena on packed dirt and will be streamed live via the Internet.
The city of Louisville has undergone a great transformation as a destination of choice, and we are certain competitors and guests alike will enjoy their time in Louisville. We are working diligently with the facility, local sports commission, and hotels to secure room blocks at favorable rates.
Further details will be announced as they become available.
A New Year's Greeting for 2010
A end of year review by USDAA president Kenneth Tatsch.
Happy New Year!
2009 was a challenging year as we undertook to tackle many projects, some of which had lingered for the past couple of years. We began the year determined to finish our long time coming web development efforts for Group Services and electronic scorekeeping. We continued to search for alternative venues for the Cynosport World Games and to provide enhanced video streaming so those enthusiasts not in attendance could join in the fun of this great event. The Board continued a lingering debate on a number of prospective rule changes, including equipment specifications, tournament rules and a new Veterans Program. And we forged forward with the third phase of an outside general study of the sport of dog agility.
With so many tasks at hand, we know we fell short in rendering the quality of service that USDAA aspires to and others had come to expect, and at the same time, not reaching our goals in finalizing so many projects. Frankly, we found ourselves short-handed and working many long hours throughout the entire year, even with the addition of temporary help in areas where temps could be efficiently utilized. In the closing weeks of 2009, frustration mounted as the holidays slowed things to a crawl. However, despite the frustrations, there were some successes.
The good news is that significant progress was made on all projects and most will be implemented in January. As part of these implementations, a major goal is to improve customer service. Office support is being evaluated in light of new systems that have been installed in the fourth quarter 2009, and job assignments will be reassigned in some areas to rebalance the workload and to generally improve service. These changes will become evident over a period of weeks. We will post information on key reassignments as they take effect.
One concern of many - the location of the 2010 Cynosport Games (i.e., USDAA tournament championships). I'm sure everyone noticed we did not get the announcement made by year-end, largely due to holiday interruptions by key facility personnel. We share the frustration; however, we hope to have a signed agreement within the next couple of weeks and will promptly follow with an announcement. Some changes are in store for 2010 at the Games, with a new management team being groomed to guide the event into the next decade. The new team participated in site visits at different venues in November and December and have helped to get us to a decision point, subject to final adjustments to contract provisions that should be forthcoming and lead to signed agreements n the next several days.
A quick summary of things to come -
our Group Services project is almost fully tested with some final fixes finished by developers just two days ago needing some final review; expected availability for groups to file electronically and prepare their test schedules online - mid to late January.
as part of our database conversion in early October, the staff has been learning the new system (with frustration, I might add), and modifications have been implemented that simply our administrative interface (and frustration) and will enable us to resume calculation of titles in the next few days. I know we have not delivered the quality of service in the fourth quarter that we aspire to and to which people have grown to expect. While the End User Agreement doesn't require it, we have decided it is appropriate to issue a 60-day extension to existing subscriptions for those with active subscriptions during the fourth quarter. If a subscription expired during that time, we will reactivate the account for 60 days. These adjustments will be made the first week of January.
as further improvement of handling of our sounding board and use of other social media, Brenna Fender will be taking on more responsibility to provide faster approvals for members to certain groups and working as moderator. Other staffing additions will be made to address other growing needs. And we will strive to improve communications as we get the workload balanced and free up more time for this vital need.
we received word this past week that Tim Verrelli's electronic scorekeeping software has been completed pursuant USDAA specifications and is available for distribution. In the first week of January, we will set out new scorekeeping policy for procedures outside the computer to eliminate unnecessary redundancies and contingency plans in the event of computer failures.
to relieve stress on the office staff, Tom Kula will be the new Chairperson for the Cynosport Games, working as co-chair in 2010 and taking on full role in 2011, working with a new outside Event Coordinator to render logistical support, in addition to office staff. He and the event planner began working with us in December as part of the site review process and will play an integral role as the planning progresses. Announcement of the venue is expected in the next several days as everyone recovers from the extended holidays. We hope to announce a future year venue as well.
we have made adjustments in our Video players and have finished testing. It is now functioning properly, though there are some improvements in navigation and features that we have planned. We have posted the Performance Grand Prix and Steeplechase video streams (On Demand) and will be posting the Grand Prix and Performance Speedjumping in the next few days. We will again be implementing discounts for Subscribers (and we are studying the time duration that videos may be viewed with hopes of lengthening it). We will issue credits for discounts to subscribers on purchases made on these videos since their release. This will be consistent or better than original price announcements made during the event back in November, which specified that live streaming would be free and a fee charged for On Demand viewing, and a discounted fee applied for subscribers.
The Board has been deadlocked over several rule proposals over the past couple years, indicating a need to form a larger committee or committees to provide ideas and feedback to improve the sport while maintaining key characteristics; the introduction of fresh ideas and more feedback will help the Board to make more confident decisions on regulation proposals. These involve some "hot" topics as well as other subject matter that we believe will yield better, more balanced programs. The Board will meet over committee formation in the next few weeks and call for a joint board and Committee meeting in the first quarter. A new rule book will be forthcoming.
Finally, and seemingly least important, but certainly of great importance over the long-term, our outside independent general study of dog agility was concluded late in December. This was the third of three phases engaged over the past two years by a nationally prominent marketing agency. The study addressed not just what USDAA was doing in the market place, but in other organizations and what excites the public about the sport. A by-product of a study of this nature often leads to a new logo, motto and mission statement, all of which will be released in the first quarter 2010. I extend a special Thank You! to those competitors that have contributed to this process throughout the past year, including their feedback on the evaluation of possible new logos. We are excited about its reflection on USDAA and encouraging strategies for the future. And further changes in general enhancements to the web site and services will be forthcoming as a result.
As we enter the 2010, we are excited about a better defined direction and gaining more support through involvement of other qualified individuals and organizations in key positions. We continue to see interests from new groups, domestic and abroad and economic recovery should see a resurgence in levels of participation as the sport continues to mature.
On behalf of myself and the USDAA staff, I wish all much success and happiness in 2010.
Kenneth Tatsch, USDAA Presiden

Season Greeting from PUPS Singapore!
Hi USDAAsg,
Wishing You All A Merry Christmas & A Very Happy & Blessed New Year!!
A Picture of Season Greeting has been posted on the Photo Album. Check it out!
There appears to be some misinformed posts on various discussion groups and rumors being passed by "word of mouth" that are inaccurate or speculative about the location for the 2010 event.
There are several issues with each of the prospective sites for which solutions are being sought. No site has been ruled out, and we continue researching best solutions and negotiating with each of the facilities, which are all in the Eastern half of the U.S.
As of now, the possible dates for next year's event, depending on location are:
September 22-26 October 13-17 November 10-14
Please note that more than two sites are under consideration and not all dates are available at any one location. Date will depend largely on location.
We are aware of all the concerns on all fronts and are seeking the best opportunity for a fantastic new venue for the event. An announcement of the site for next year's Cynosport World Games will be made before the end of the year.
Permission to cross post granted.
Delays causing concern....
Events & Titles
Delays causing concern....
Since the conversion to the new database, there have been unexpected delays in getting the event applications input and the event calendar updated.
We apologize for these delays and the concern and confusion caused to clubs and competitors. We ask for your patience, as we are working to get shows posted on the calendar. However, during this time, you may see events posted for later in the year and events coming up in the next month or two not listed yet. This will be rectified shortly.
Another victim of the conversion has been the issuance of titles. Event results are being input for mid-October, but the last time titles were run (certificates not mailed) was through the end of July. Again, we are doing our best to get caught up.
Thank you for your patience.
H1N1 confirmed in dogs and cheetahs too
H1N1 Hits Dogs, and Cheetahs too Posted December 1, 2009
H1N1 has been identified in 2 dogs in China. Well, it isn't in the US but it sure means we now KNOW it can happen. Unlike the reports we get here in the US, the Chinese didn't presume that the virus came from a human; they didn't speculate that it was somehow less likely that the dogs could pass the virus back to humans. No comforting and nonsense mixed in with the facts, the news. How refreshing!
Oops, I take it back. "The animals were diagnosed in Beijing and, while it is possible for pets to transfer viruses to their owners, scientists said there is no evidence to suggest pets are already spreading the illness. 'If animals can get infected from humans, then the reverse is also true,' said Feng Zijian, director of emergency response for the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention." Somebody from the US got to them :) And the waffling begins...
December 1, 2009 A cheetah in California has tested positive on preliminary tests for 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. Confirmatory tests are pending. We are in communication with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV) and will post additional information and resources when they become available. Zoos remain safe to visit; however, it is in the best interest of everyone that people with flu-like illness avoid visiting public places until they have recovered from their illness.
Don't let that "December 1, 2009" date fool you. It appears this cheetah was confirmed at the same time as the cat that died. With H1N1 still on the front pages, why are these 2 stories running under the radar? Because it means all our pets are at risk just like we are for starters. A cheetah in a zoo? At the risk of pointing out the obvious, unless some human was being allowed to cuddle that cheetah, that one means we're all at more risk than the veterinarians imply when they say to hand wash and not cuddle your pets if you have the flu. Clearly that one means it doesn't require any where near as close of contact/exposure.
Italy has reported yet another mutation. (FYI: there have been several, all played down by the media despite multiple deaths.)
In South Korea, the news is about the possibility of re-infection with H1N1. You can get it more than once. Ain't that great? So much for life long immunity. Kinda leads to the conclusion that a vaccine may not provide immunity either.
I'm trying hard not to be "overly concerned" about H1N1 but I'll admit it's starting to get difficult about now.
I can't believe I'm having to read English versions of Chinese news to get information! Oh, well, I guess the US media was busy chasing the Tiger Woods "incident", er, that thing that turned out to be the simple accident it originally was reported by the driver to be and much ado about NOTHING.

INNER STRENGTH
If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills,
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time,
If you can overlook people taking things out on you when it's not your fault and something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor and if you can sleep without the aid of drugs...
THEN YOU ARE PROBABLY A DOG.

Beautiful Poem to share
This is the poem: Pueblo Indian Poem
A long time I have lived with you And now we must be going Separately to be together. Perhaps I shall be the wind To blur your smooth waters So that you do not see your face too much. Perhaps I shall be the star To guide your uncertain wings So that you have direction in the night. Perhaps I shall be the fire To separate your thoughts So that you do not give up. Perhaps I shall be the rain To open up the earth So that your seed may fall. Perhaps I shall be the snow To let your blossoms sleep So that you may bloom in spring. Perhaps I shall be the stream To play a song on the rock So that you are not alone. Perhaps I shall be a new mountain So that you always have a home.

The Cynosport Games will not be returning to Scottsdale, Arizona next year!
From the news page at the USDAA website discussing yesterday's opening ceremony!
The only announcement that was not related to awards may have been the one that received the most lively crowd reaction. The Cynosport Games will not be returning to Scottsdale, Arizona next year. Although the WestWorld site is ideal in many ways, USDAA has worked to find other locations so that competitors will not have to travel to the same city every year. In 2010, the Games will take place in either Philadelphia or Kentucky. The event will be held earlier in the fall to take advantage of the area's nicest weather.
More information will be coming soon.

Cynosport World Games 2009 - 11 to 15 Nov!
Cynosport Games UpdatePosted Date: November 5, 2009
The big event is almost here!
We’re getting closer to USDAA’s flagship event and festivities starting November 11, 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Remember to keep refreshing the USDAA news page (https://www.usdaa.com/news.cfm) from Wednesday through Sunday night to see the latest in Cynosport Coverage. Course maps, articles, results, photos, play-by-play of several events, and more will be available on the website.
While agility is the major sport of the Cynosport World Games, it’s not the only thing happening. If you are lucky enough to attend the event, you will be treated to perhaps the largest gathering of dog sports in the country. Where else can you experience so many canine activities all in the same location? You’ll see dock diving, freestyle, flyball, flying disc, herding, and much, much more. There will be activities for spectator’s dogs to try as well as top-notch performances to watch.
To give you an idea about the things you’ll be seeing next week (both on the website and in person), and to get you even more excited about the Games, check out some of last year’s coverage.
We hope to see you in person and on the Web site next week!
Thanks to Leona Hellesvig for her assistance with this article.

POODLE Let me just blow in the border collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails should be dry.

Busy Bees at 6th USDAA Sanctioned Trials and 1st Ever Dog Frisbee Event Competition!
It has been a very hectic 2 weeks before and during our 6th USDAA Dog Agility Sanctioned Trials and our First Ever Dog Frisbee Competitions held at the West Coast Park Dog Run. We had to occasionally go to the airport to pick up our Judges and friends that came to Singapore for supporting our event and also to learn from these great dog loving people. Our Judges for this event are John Zhao, Guang Zhou China, Roel De Guia, Phillipines our very own Judge Dexter Sim, Singapore and our Guest of Honour Mr Kenneth Tatsch, President of USDAA!
The event came with an International feel as participants from Australia, USA, Malaysia took part for the first time in our event giving the locals a run for their money!
Luke of Calanais Border Collies, our friend and breeder of Spice our Border Collie came and stayed with us for 12 full days to participate in our Dog Show Events in Singapore and held a 2 day workshop in Agility for our participants who has learned alot during the 2 day workshop which has reaped great benefits to the peeps that attended it as it showed when they won in some of the events during our USDAA Trials held just a few days after the workshop. Luke also participated running our dogs Max and Benji for the titling and tournament event for the first time even though there was little training with our dogs, he trialed them with real professionalism. Luke was the centerpiece of attraction to all that came to watch the event as he smoothly gave some clean runs and showed some great handling skills which benefited everyone by just watching him run. If there was a prize on the best Agility Handler Competition held, our Guang Zhuo Judge John Zhao would have selected Luke as the Best Agility Handler for the event as he was very impress to see such great handling. Week before was an FCI Dog Show event held at the Serangoon CC and Luke showed Spice for the first time all the way from Best of Breed to Best Junior in Group(Pastoral) to 3rd in Group(Pastoral) to Reserve Best Junior in Show! Finishing Spice to her Ch. Title as she was short of 5 points to the title. Thanks again Luke for being here, running our dogs and thank you for helping us to run our USDAA event so smoothly and also keeping our other Judges and our Guest of Honour company! Not once did we hear him complaint when we had to travel back to our grounds to clear the rubbish left by our trialers after the event and miss out shopping for "Jeffrey" nor when we missed many of our breakfast cause we were so exhausted the night before. We also miss out drinking "Turtle Soup" which I believe he so wanted to try la, NOT! More videos on our PUPS youtube channel.
Our Judges John and Roel have been so patient and wonderful people keeping the event up and running, they are also the first Judges to Judge our 1st ever Frisbee Event held here bringing the event a refreshing feel to it. Congrats to all Frisbee Participants and also Frisbee Sponsors, Smartdoggy and Pet Lovers Centre for sponsoring the Frisbees for the event! Dexter our Singapore Judge cum course builder cum host cum organiser cum trialer was also very patient and helped kept Saturday's event running smoothly and on time even though we were held up for a while in that morning due to a hiccup with the equipments.
Our surprise Guest of Honour Mr Kenneth Tatsch came all the way from USA to support and grace our event and we really appreciate his presence and it boasted everyone's moral!
Our Malaysian friends from KL and Penang also came to watch and support our event. Sue, Adrianne, Janice, Chan, Bernard, Fawn, Susan and Mun Yee. Thank you neighbours for helping out during the event!
Our volunteers, Patrick, Anderson, Bernadette, Christine, Nicole, Vivien,Tina, Alvin, Luke, Anthony, Eric(Driver) and anyone that helped us one way or another, Thank You.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Eukanuba, Rusty's, Pet Lovers Centre and Smartdoggy for being co sponsors for the event and Nparks for supporting the event.

The handler and his dog have to perform a set of obstacles (14 at the minimum) in the sequence that the Judges has instructed. You will notice the sequence numbers placed near the obstacles. Each course differs every event as the Judge prepares the course usually only a day before the competition. The dog has to follow the instructions of the handler and must perform the obstacles correctly, and at the shortest time. Each error has a corresponding penalty called faults. The dog with the least faults, and with the shortest time will come out as the winner.
Example of faults:
Knocking down hurdle bars - 5 faults Failing to step on contact zone - 5 faults For prematurely jumping of seesaw - 5 faults For not following sequence - 20 faults For missing an obstacle once - 10 faults For missing two obstacles - elimination For urinating in the ring - elimination

Wanted! CLOSET FRISBEE DOG COMPETITIONS!
Dog Agility Master International Three Dog Team World Championship!
Dog Agility Dog agility is one of the fastest growing dog sports of the last century. USDAA's tournament events present the best of the best in agility, jumping and team competition.
The Dog Agility Masters® International Three-Dog Championship presents top competitors from around the world in teams of three dogs and three handlers as they compete in a test of versatility and endurance. The tournament consists of five classes of competition - standard agility, jumping, gamblers choice, snooker agility, and the three-dog relay. Points are accumulated through the five classes of competition, with the team with the most points being awarded the championship. A unique feature of the tournament is that competitors may team up with competitors whose dogs are of different heights. A handicapping system is utilized that adjusts times and points based upon the dog's size.
What is Dog Frisbee?
Disc dog is the more generic name for what is commonly called Frisbee dog. In disc dog competitions, dogs and their human disc throwers compete in events such as distance catching and somewhat choreographed freestyle catching. The sport celebrates the bond between handler and dog, by allowing them to work together. The term "disc" is preferred because "Frisbee" is a trademark (held by Wham-O) for a brand of flying disc.
The sport got its start in the early 1970s, paralleling the rise in popularity of Frisbee sport. The definitive moment came on August 4, 1974 when Alex Stein, a 19-year-old college student from Ohio, and his dog, Ashley Whippet, jumped the fence at a nationally broadcast baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds.[1] Stein had with him a couple of flying discs, which he threw for the dog. Ashley astonished the crowd with her disc-catching, as he ran up to 35 miles per hour and leaped 9 feet in the air to snag the Frisbees.[2] The stunt was so novel that the game was stopped and Joe Garagiola continued to announce the flying disc action on the field. Finally, after eight minutes, Stein was escorted off the field and arrested.[1] The nationally televised exhibition of Ashley's skill did much to fuel interest in the sport.
Stein worked with Irv Lander and Eldon McIntire to create the Frisbee Dog World Championship for people and their dogs. Even today, Stein and McIntire continue to contribute to the sport.

Common Things that are Toxic to Animals
Common Things that are Toxic to Animals
Competitor, dog trainer, and author Angelica Steinker recently lost one of her dogs to a toxic substance, and she doesn't want you to do the same. Co-authored by Dr. Rachel Kelly.
This article is in memory of a Minature Pinscher named Turbo who ingested an amanita-type mushroom in the yard and died of liver failure. Within 72 hours he went from happy and joy-filled to arresting in intensive care despite the heroic efforts of Dr. Rachel Kelly and also Dr. Miryam Reems, a critical care Veterinarian at Florida Veterinary Specialists. Neither a blood transfusion nor plasma could save his life.
Common Things Toxic to Animals
1. Chocolate - Dark chocolate is the most dangerous as it contains the most cocoa, the ingredient that is hazardous to animals. Macadamia nuts are also toxic to animals.
2. Grapes - Grapes contain a toxin that can cause kidney failure. Raisins are equally dangerous. Onions in general are toxic to animals.
3. Xylitol sweetner - This is found in gum and candy and can also destroy an animal's liver. This substance is highly toxic even in small quantities. It is suggested to not purchase or store any gum or candy with Xylitol if you own an animal.
4. Poisonous mushrooms - This is the type of mushroom that killed Turbo. Many plants are also poisonous to animals.
5. Bufo toads - If your animal has contact with a toad, flush his mouth out being sure that the water runs out of his mouth, not to the back of his throat.
6. Poisonous snakes - Most emergency clinics store anti-venom. Rush your animal to the vet as soon as possible if he has been bitten by a snake.

Get a head start in planning for one of the most exciting canine events in the world!
November seems far away, but if you are thinking about attending the 2009 Cynosport World Games in Scottsdale, Arizona, from November 11 - 15, you might want to plan ahead. Book your hotels and flights early since a NASCAR event will be in town during the same weekend. Airplane tickets will be at their lowest prices between now and the end of June as well.
USDAA will once again live stream from the Games free of charge. Events will be offered "on demand" after the fact for a very nominal charge to cover extra bandwidth costs.
Every year it takes hundreds of volunteers to make the Games run smoothly. Most jobs require only "on the job training" and some can be done by people who have never competed in agility. Games volunteers can work for one-half day, one day, or even every day!
Volunteers describe many benefits from helping out at this amazing event:
"This year will be the fourth year I've been a dedicated volunteer at the Cynosport World Games. It is an incredible opportunity to have the best seats in the house and watch the best agility competitors in the world walking courses, discussing strategy, memorizing courses, and competing. Oh, did I mention world-class shopping, and plenty of time to do it, as well as to watch other dog events?
I'm one of several members of NOMAD, an agility club in northern Vermont, who look forward to this as an annual working vacation. I'll have to admit one of the big attractions is the beautiful outdoor site and the weather. It's no sacrifice to trade cold cloudy Vermont for sunny Scottsdale in November. We look forward to seeing other dedicated volunteers from other parts of the country year after year." --Lynne von Trapp
"I have throughly enjoyed working these events for a number of reasons including the opportunity to watch and met some of the top handlers in the world. I have also come away from these events reinvigorated and ready to work hard with my own dogs to hopefully someday reach this level of competition. I am usually assigned to the scorer's table for the week so I also get to refresh my knowledge of scoring and of the USDAA's rules in general. Finally, I feel that by participating in this event I am giving back to a sport that I love and strengthening the friendships that I have made over the years in agility." --Kimberly O'Conner
"This will be my fifth year traveling from Vermont to volunteer at the Cynosport Games in Scottsdale. I volunteer full-time Thursday through Sunday, but that still allows plenty of time to visit the vendors and to watch flyball, disc dog, and dock diving. And there is always time to socialize with my agility pals from around the country.
Why do I go without a dog? First, I don't have a dog who competes at that level. And much as I hate to leave my dogs at home, I suspect I have much more fun in Scottsdale without them. My time in Scottsdale is free of responsibilities and anxieties. It is pure fun in the sun! It's my vacation in the perfect Arizona weather with good friends and the best agility in the country. Late October/early November in Vermont tends to be gray and cold, so in a way this trip extends my summer season.
This is the one event where agility people from around the country gather once a year. I wouldn't want to miss it. The level of handler and dog skill is very high in all the rings, and that makes almost every run fun and inspiring to watch. We get to see the results of new training and handling ideas from around the country.
Karen Gloor is another reason I make the trip every year. She has the volunteers beautifully organized, and she is so appreciative of the Vermont crew. We are all friends, and we have fun together on this trip." --Lisa Barrett
If you are interested in having a front row seat for some of the best agility action in the world, contact Cynosport Games volunteer coordinator Karen Gloor at rysaroni@cox.net, or via telephone at: (480) 539-8333.

My recent Judging trip to Bacolod City, Philippines!
5th National PANAAD Dog Agility Competition was a Negros Occidental Yearly PANAAD festival event. During the week long festival, Dog Agility was selected to be staged as a Grand Event at Center Stage. It's was held in the PANAAD Stadium, on April 22, 2009.
Bacolod City is a very pretty and scenic city in Negros Occidental. Bacolod City supply more than 51% of the Sugar Cane to the whole of Philippines. On our way from Bacolod-Silay City International Airport, we drove through the country-side to the city, it was covered with Sugar Cane plantations.
Before the event, we were treated like tourist and our great host Anna, Edward and Nikko brought us to understand the history of Bacolod by visiting the Spanish House and the Ruins. Tito Donnie and Lynette took us to Donnie's Negros Forest and Agricultural Foundation Inc an environmental rescue zoo that saved the many wildlife birds and animals from the forest and created a breeding programme for these animals before they became extinct. At night we were taken to their clubhouse where we had dinner and met their many supportive members. Members came from all walks of life from Farmers to Hotel CEOs and Artists to dog trainers. Dentists and vets and hardware shop owners. We were introduce to Bacolod's specialty the Chicken Inasal from Chicken Hause. BBQed Chicken Dipped in vinegar, soy sauce and lime added with white rice. Simple and good! Theses were great people with very sweet dogs. The Belgium Malinois seem to be the most popular big breeds there. Very few Border Collies but the Davao people brought their Beagles, Minpins, Cocker Spaniel and Golden Ret. And these dogs did great in Agility. First time we see such fast Beagles and Minpins doing Agility!
This Year beside the crowd entreating Dog Agility Competition, they are holding their first ever Dog Frisbee Competition in Negros! The participants are from Manila, Davao, Gen. Santos, Zamboanga, Cebu and Negros Occidental. There was a great variety of dog breeds; Belgian Malinois, Border Collie, Cocker Spaniels, Shetland Sheepdogs, Jack Russell Terriers, Jack Russell Parsons, Boxer, Bulldog, Mini pins, Beagles, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Belgian Teveruns, Pit bull etc And the youngest competitor, Kobe is a 12 year old boy from Davao.
Beside their main event of Dog Agility & Frisbee Competition, they too have a go at various extreme sports. The rule of the game is the winner takes all. The extreme sports are the High Jump, Wall Scaling, and Super Weaves Challenge(36 poles). The winner of the high jump was a tie between 2 Malinois, Jumping at 1.75 metres. The Super Weaves Challenge won by a Jack Russell Terrier at 6 second. The Wall Scaling was called off due to rain.
The 5th PANAAD National Dog Agility Competition was organized by K9 Obedience Club, Province of Negros Occidental and Pro Plan. On Tuesday, dated April 21, I was invited to Judge in the K9 Obedience Club for Starters Jumpers, Starter Snooker and the Extreme Sports. We have about 24 participants in the Starter Jumpers Class. The Standard of Agility, the handling skills and their level of competitiveness, has impressed deeply, especially the teams from Davao, Gen. Santos and Zamboanga. Their dog's line and their precise handling skills put them in the pole positions. The competitions are tight, as many good teams put in strong performances.
Starter Snooker are still new to many in the Philippines. However many teams have a go at this strategic game. I am fairly surprise that many teams have put in a strong performances. The winning teams complete the Snooker Class with high scores.
On the actual day of the 5th PANAAD National Dog Agility Competitions, we have both the Mini and Maxi Dog Agility Classes. And of course, their first ever Dog Frisbee Competition. The PANAAD Stadium was filled with people wanting to catch and be entertained by the best trained dogs in the Philippines. We have about 2 thousands spectators. We kick start the Maxi-Agility Class at about 4pm.
Next is the first ever Dog Frisbee Competitions. We have the single disc event. Right after the Dog Frisbee event, we have the Mini-Agility Class.
The Standard Agility Course that I've designed provided the following challenges for the team. The Course opens with a tire jump straight on to the teeter. One or two teams have fly-off here. Without good performance on teeter, dogs will over run and go on the Dogwalk that was a off-course trap. Having to perform a pin-wheel with tunnel, bring the dog onto the dogwalk. At the down contact, handlers require to push the dogs to the left into another tunnel and a good entry into the weavepoles. A good number of teams were having difficulty to get their dogs into the tunnel on the right side. Next is the chute and straight on to the pause table for 5 seconds count. After the 5 seconds count, the next was the A-Frame and transit to another pin-wheel this time on the anti-clockwise direction. This pin-wheel will bring you to another trap obstacle the tunnel, where handlers need to drive their dogs straight to the broadjump and a last sprint to a double jump and the end line. The trap tunnel seems to inviting to some teams, where their dogs was suck into the tunnels and causing them a wrong course or a standard fault for the Starters Class. All-in-all a very strong performances by the teams and given the pressure and the overwhelming crowds, some team couldn't perform, while the others put in a good shows to wow the immersing crowds.
After a highly competitive competition, we were asked to go back to refresh ourselves and we were treated to a Prize Presentation & Celebrations Dinner at a very special bar opened by an expat who also mentioned about his bar at the Harbourfront in Singapore. We all have a great time interacting, sharing laughters and disappointments that they had in this event. All winners got their trophy and prize money and we all have a great time partying to the wee hours.
Its was a very impressionable trip for us, seeing and witnessing ourselves what Dog Agility Enthusiasts working together to create a strong family bond between dogs and handlers and above all, having so much great fun with their lovely trained dogs.
We would like to thank the dog agility people of the Philippines and the great people we met there in Bacolod! We look forward to your continued enthusiasm for the dog sport of Agility
We will be happy to go back to Judge if we are invited again by these cool people from the Philippines.

USDAA Update
USDAA Update Posted Date: March 16, 2009 Learn the latest USDAA News! ----------------------------------------------------------
*The new USDAA rulebook is in the works, incorporating the previously announced rule updates. It's taking some time to revamp because the goal is to make it is less of a legal document and more a useful reference tool for readers.
*The Board has been collaborating for the past couple of weeks on finalizing the standards for the tire, now that USDAA's tests have been completed.
*USDAA has received prototypes of long jumps being offered by two manufacturers that support the new standard. We will make some minor adjustments and have the specs out by the end of March. Implementation will be July 1, 2009.
*USDAA President Kenneth Tatsch has made two recent trips to Florida to work with the scorekeeping software developer to test the program. Work is being done to incorporate some key requests and a final version will hopefully be done soon.
*USDAA's newest goal is to improve communications via podcasts, the website, and other media.
*Discussions are underway to host a Pan American championship in the east in Winter 2010. More to come...
2009 Cynosport World Games Site announcement......
2009 Cynosport World Games
Posted Date: March 13, 2009
Site announcement...
The 2009 Cynosport World Games will take place November 11-15, 2009. The event is returning to Scottsdale, Arizona, two weeks later on the calendar than in the previous two years in order to avoid end-of-October heat. The event will once again be webcast through USDAA.com.
We researched many new sites for the 2009 Games, but we were unable to find a facility that met our criteria that was available on dates that would work with the current tournament season schedule. Since choosing a particular facility may necessitate an earlier regional season, we will look at 2010 with that in mind, and know when the championships will be before the regional schedule is finalized. The search for an eastern or central site for 2010 continues in hopes that it can be announced at the Cynosport World Games this November.

What is A Title?
What Is A Title? by Sandy Mowery, Wisconsin
Not just a brag, not just a stepping stone to a higher title, not just an adjunct to competitive scores. A Title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honor that dog, an ultimate memorial. It will remain in the record and in the memory for about as long as anything in this world can remain. Few humans will do as well or better in that regard, and though the dog himself doesn't know or care that his achievements have been noted, a Title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count.
A Title says your dog was intelligent, and adaptable, and good natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things that please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed. And a Title says that you loved your dog, that you loved to spend time with him because he was a good dog, and that you believed in him enough to give him yet another chance when he failed, and that in the end your faith was justified.
A Title proves that your dog inspired you to have the special relationship enjoyed by so few, that in the world of disposable creatures, this dog with a Title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in return. And when that dear short life is over, the Title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend, volumes of praise in one small set of initials before or after the name.
A Title is nothing less than love and respect, given and received, permanently recorded.
Fun Matches in our 5th USDAA Sanctioned Trials!
Hi All,
In our 5th USDAA Sanctioned Trials, we are offering 3 FUN Matches. Are you game enough to test out our FUN Matches?
1. Rally 'O' Obedience - Rally "O" provides you an opportunity to show case your obedience trained furbabies without the stress of the 'REAL' competitions. Not calling stewards to confuse you? Not Judges to tag around your heeling routine exercise? - but provide you an opportunity to show case your obedience trained furkids. Giving yourself an opportunity to test their understanding of commands and responsiveness.
2. Beginners Agility Match - provide the opportunity to test your dogs' agility skills and the fun on winning and conquering the agility challenges together.
3. Beginner Jumping Match - provide the opportunity to test your dogs' jumping skills. The speed, the flow and the accuracy of execution.
Hope you will join us for some great fun and together have a great doggie outing.
Cheers
Why take part in the Tournament Classes?
Hi All, Why will you want to take part in the Tournament Classes? Not only do you match your Dog Agility Skill Set with the International Standard and have a test of the challenges present in the Master Level. The tournament masters title requires 10 total tournament Qs, with at least 2 in each of the three tournaments. 2x – Grand Prix, 2x – Steeplechase, and 2x – Dog Agility Masters Three-Dog Team tournament. So the title might be earned as 5x team tournament Qs, 2x Grand Prix Qs and 3x Steeplechase Qs, for example. Or 6x Steeplechase, 2x Grand Prix and 2x Team. So even though the reality of traveling to the US for the Cynosport Games is remote for most people, the Tournament titles provide a real chance to be recognized for competing well in the tournaments. These titling requirements are set forth in Appendix F. Also see the Bronze, Silver, Gold & Platinum levels too at the bottom of the table in Appendix F. So for Bronze Tournament Master, it would be 15 total Qs, with minimum of 3 Qs in each tournament. Silver 25 Qs with 5 Qs in each tournament, and so on. Hope this will encourage you to compete in the tournament and give yourself a real chance to earn a Tournament Master Title! Cheers DS

Long Jump and Tire Jump Specifications
Long Jump and Tire Jump Specifications Posted Date: December 8, 2008
Long Jump and Tire Jump specifications meet construction snags. Implementation dates have been delayed.
At its 2008 meeting, the USDAA Board adopted new specifications for the long jump and approved in concept the voluntary use of a "breakaway tire". In working with equipment providers and individual clubs, a few issues on construction design have arisen. As a result, further study is presently underway to refine the construction specifications to accommodate the concerns.
For the Long Jump, construction suggestions will be forthcoming in the next four to six weeks. The mandatory implementation date has been rolled back to July 1, 2009, with earlier use encouraged, once the new construction guidelines are out. In the meantime, the old long jump specifications may be utilized. Clubs needing to acquire new long jumps should hold off and acquire those meeting the new specifications only.
For the Tire Jump, the breakaway tires that have been seen do not meet acceptable specifications. They create too many judging issues. The Board has taken the tact that the "break" should occur only when a risk of injury exists, and not casually, as other prototypes have shown. Further, a casual break has shown in tests to create lazy jumping in some dogs, thus increasing safety concerns and integrity in judging. Again, we anticipate tests to be concluded and specifications rendered in four to six weeks time frame. The tire will be usable once it becomes available. The performance characteristics and judging shall remain unchanged from the tire's present function. Allowing for the break upon hard impact is for safety concerns only.

4th USDAA Sanctioned Trials!
Hi All,
The long awaited 4th USDAA International Dog Agility Sanctioned Trials is next SUNDAY, 14th December 2008, 9am to 5pm. So set the date and come and have a great familiy FUN with us!
Go to every trial you can to watch! You can also volunteer ahead of time, and will be given the easy jobs - pole setter, leash runner, scribe runner. You learn SO MUCH this way - more than just watching from the sidelines. I recommend looking for and watching teams that you like - they run in a happy positive way, they are really focused, they run a sighthound, - whatever really interests you. Particularly watch the Novice handlers in the Starter classes - some of the Novice dogs are run by their experienced handlers, but watch the true novices - decide again what you like, and what pitfalls you want to try to avoid (i.e. blaming your dog - we all start out doing this).
This is also a good way to get connected with the local agility community. Then when you start running you will already have a built in cheering squad!
It sounds like you are off to a great start - God Bless You!

Intro to Team Relay Team!
Hi All,
Team Relay
Relay classes are those that include two or more dog/handler teams competing on a course together. The course may be split, wherein each team member runs a segment, or each team member may run the entire course (when teams are all of the same jump height class). A course may include all of the obstacles other than the table, which may be used as a start, finish or baton exchange point. Since speed is an inherent element in any type of relay competition, the class is generally scored on a time-plus-faults basis, though standard scoring could be used if less emphasis on speed was intended.
For USDAA titling purposes, teams may be classified as "mini-" or "open", meaning that the dogs jumping 12" and 16" may be paired together and dogs jumping 22" and 26" may be paired together. A "Qualifying Course Time" is established by the judge under which teams must score after faults are added to their time; hence, a round with faults may qualify, provided their performance time is fast enough to allow for the addition of penalties.

What is Gamblers, Snooker, Relay, Rally O?
Hi All,
So much has been written on the games such as Snooker, Gamblers, Rally O etc...... you may now view some videos for your interest!
Have you get to understand the gamblers game? Here let me focus on this unique game where the handler and the dog presents a test on competitive strategy, distance works, testing the competitors training and knowledge of their dog.
Gamblers class consist of 2 segments; Opening Segment or the point accumulation period and the Closing Segment or the Gambler period. In the Opening Segment, you will be given time period of 20sec-50sec where you accumulate as many points as possible within the time period. The Judge will assign point value to the obstacles. And the scoring system can be either 1-2-3-5 System or 1-3-5-7 System.
Once the time period has expire, you will hear a whistle that signal the Gamble period or closing segment has begin. You will need to attempt the gamble to complete the game. In order to qualify, you need to complete the gamble fully.
In Gamble period, handler and dog will be test on the following area base on distance works;
1. Obstacle Discrimination, 2. Contact or Weave-pole performance, 3. Redirectional Control
In Gamblers Class the team with the highest score wins the game.
Cheers DS
Non-standard class - The Gamblers Class!
Gamblers
Gamblers is a point-basis class wherein handlers develop their own strategy for running a course in order to accumulate as many points as possible during the time allotted by the judge. Typically, in planning their run, any obstacle can be performed twice for points and the handler may choose what obstacles they wish to perform and in what order. The judge may impose restrictions on the sequences permissible (e.g., two different contact obstacles may be performed in sequence without first taking a non-contact obstacle) and may specify special challenges to earn bonus points (e.g., a short obstacle sequence where the handler is limited as to their movement or distance from the dog). Additionally, a judge may designate an additional time period during which a special challenge or "joker" (a.k.a., gamble) may be performed for bonus points. At the end of the allotted time, the competitor with the most points is the winner.
Snooker Game continue.......
Hi All,
So have you understand the game of Snooker? Here let me summarize for you;
Snooker Games has 2 parts;
Part 1 - Opening Sequence - RED + COLOUR, RED + COLOUR, RED + COLOUR, then proceed to closing. Your points accumulation will add up for part 1. (Taking RED give you the permission to take a colour and earn the points)
Part 2 - Closing Sequence - take the obstacles in running sequence. From 2,3,4,5,6,7 and the time will stop. If you have complete the closing sequence perfectly (No fault), you will earn 2+3+4+5+6+7 =27points. The passing score is 37 point, so you need to earn at least 10 points from your opening sequence to Q the class.
In conclusion, the team will the highest points win the class. Should the scores are the same, the timing will be the one that determine the winner.
This game call on your Agility Skills of strategy and completion of the obstacles properly. If any obstacle is not taken properly, you will not earn the points of that obstacle.
Cheers DS
4th USDAA Sanctioned Trials, Snooker Game!
Hi All,
One of the unique feature of USDAA Sanctioned Trials is that it includes the Non-standard classes such as Jumping, Snookers, Gamblers and Relays into their Championships and Performances Titling Programmes. I'm sure you must be very clear about Agility and Jumping since it's available in our local kennel club trials.
Today I will like to focus on Snooker Games, and I hope it will encourage you to know this great game and have fun running it in our USDAA Trials.
Snooker - Named after the billiards game popular in Great Britain, snooker is a point-basis class wherein a handler develops their strategy for accumulating as many points as possible during the allotted time by performing the obstacles in "Snooker" sequence, which is defined by color. The obstacles are labeled as to color (and number). A "Red" obstacle is almost always a displaceable hurdle (required for USDAA titling classes) and a "Color" obstacle refers to an obstacle designated as a color other than red (i.e., yellow, green, brown, blue, pink or black, the only other permissible colors). Colors (i.e., points) are assigned by the judge to the obstacles based upon their relative difficulty, as determined by their nature or by their placement on the course. Point/color associations are shown in the following table:
Color, Point Value Red, 1 Yellow, 2 Green, 3 Brown, 4 Blue, 5 Pink, 6 Black,7
The snooker class consists of an opening sequence immediately followed by a closing sequence, both of which must be performed in the overall performance time allotted by the judge.
The opening sequence is "Red-Color-Red-Color-Red-Color, and so on until all "Red" obstacles and their following "Color" obstacle have been performed; however, if a "Red" is faulted while performing the sequence, the "Color" opportunity immediately following that "Red" is lost. It is frequently said that you must perform a "Red" successfully to earn the right to perform a "Color" for additional points. No points are earned for faulted obstacles.
Once all "Reds" have been performed (including the "Color" of handler's choice following each "Red" that is successfully performed, the "Closing Sequence" begins. The closing sequence is "Yellow-Green-Brown-Blue-Pink-Black (i.e., the "Colors other than Red" in increasing point value as defined).
The round is over when the course time allotment expires, when a fault occurs in the closing sequence, an improper sequence of obstacles is performed, or the course has been completed. A competitor's score is the number of points earned during their round.
The maximum score possible in the opening sequence is determined by the number of "Reds" defined in the course plan by the judge. If three "Reds" are defined, then the maximum number of points is 24; if four "Reds are defined, then the maximum is 32 points; and so forth. The maximum can be achieved by performing each "Red" successfully (1 point apiece) and then following each "Red" with the "Black" obstacle, which is worth 7 points each time it is performed successfully. So the maximum points possible in the opening sequence is 8 points times the number of "Reds". The maximum point value of the closing sequence is always 27 points, which is the sum of the Yellow, Green, Brown, Blue, Pink and Black obstacles (2+3+4+5+6+7=27). Therefore, the maximum possible score in snooker is defined by the sum of possible points in the opening and closing sequences. For a course with three "Reds", the highest score possible is 51 points; with four "Reds" it is 59 points; with five "Reds" it is 67 points. Typically, a course will only have three or four "Reds". The number is determined by the judge's course plan. A qualifying score for USDAA title is a minimum of 37 points. Qualifying placements must also be earned for title certification purposes.
A more detailed description of the class setting forth requirements for title can be found in Chapter 6 of USDAA official rules and regulations booklet.

Herding, canine musical freestyle, dock diving, course-a-lure, flyball, rally, disc, police K-9 exhibition, Doggie-Do-Right, dogs to adopt, and more! By Brenna Fender
There's more than just agility going on at the 2008 Cynosport World Games! There are other competitions, including rally, flyball, and dock diving, and exhibitions, demonstrations, and many more activities. Plus there are colorful booths with vendors selling everything you could possibly need (and some things you just want).
Many of the activities are suitable for the general public to try out. Doggie-Do-Right is an introduction to agility for the inexperienced dog. The dock diving area includes a splash pool for the competing agility dogs to cool off in, and Course-A-Lure combines sighthound lure coursing with safe agility obstacles like hoops and low jumps. Flying disc demonstrations are offering instructions in the basics of the sport, down to the right way to throw a disc.
The Arizona Herding Association is providing herding introductions to newcomers to that sport, and the Arizona Canine Musical Freestylers are offering newbies the opportunity to work with choreographers and other experts to build a routine from scratch. The new freestyle competitors can then try out their skills in fun matches held throughout the weekend.
The Maricopa County Animal Control is here with a air-conditioned van and some lovely dogs to adopt. An adorable Labrador puppy found a new home within hours! Other rescue groups are here as well, with dogs needing homes and other dogs creatively asking for donations (one BC with a "Donate Please" vest on solicited attention - and donations - by throwing tennis balls at the feet of passersby).
Tomorrow there will be temperament testing, fun matches, and competitions in rally, freestyle, dock diving, flyball, and more. There is something for every dog lover here at Westworld!

2008 Cynosport World Update!
2008 Cynosport World Games Update
Posted Date: October 20, 2008
Can't make it to this year's Games? A solution may be coming.
USDAA is pleased to announce that preliminary tests on new high speed Internet connections at WestWorld of Scottsdale will now permit video streaming from the 2008 Cynosport World Games in Arizona. USDAA has contracted for the extension of the high speed services onto the polo field so that the event can be streamed live for the tournament finals, and for a daily wrap-up report at the end of each day of the event.
Should tests go as expected on Monday, October 27, a broadcast schedule will be published on the USDAA news page and Special Events page at www.cynosport.com. The live stream will be archived for future retrieval, and special clips shown through the day will be uploaded for on-demand viewing. A DVD is also expected to be produced for post event home viewing, for which a link will be set-up for advance purchase in the USDAA Store.
"We are excited about this technological development for this year's event," says USDAA President Kenneth Tatsch. "We have been trying to get the facility to help with this effort for the past four years, and finally, thanks to another major event who pressed for installation of the connection, we are going to be able to run a stream for our competitors and others who are unable to view the event in person."
There is a chance, no matter how slight, that the connection could be interrupted. Should this occur, we have made back-up provisions to capture key runs and get them uploaded to the web as soon as practicable.
Presently, a video commercial is being streamed on the USDAA web site at www.usdaa.com. Click on the banner ad below the news marquee to watch. The link for the stream will be on the Cynosport home page at www.cynosport.com once the full production and distribution system has been put into operations.
Come join us online for this year's Cynosport World Games and cheer on your friends from your own home or office! Or schedule a watching party at your neighborhood sports bar. Many sports bars today have party rooms that have Internet connections.

Agility Classes Description
Class Descriptions
Dog agility classes are generally referred to in two groups - "Standard" and "Nonstandard". These class groupings are described more fully below:
Standard Class or "Standard Agility" Standard Agility is the foundation class in the sport of dog agility. All obstacles are utilized, including three contact obstacles - A-frame, Dog Walk and See-Saw - two types of tunnels - a pipe or open tunnel and a collapsed tunnel or "chute" - weave poles, table, tire jump and a variety of other hurdles and jumps, all of which are set in a sequence designed by the judge. The class is generally scored pursuant to the "Standard Scoring Method", which charges time penalties for exceeding the "Standard Course Time" established by the judge. Course performance penalties are added to any time penalties to determine the final score. The competitor with the fewest number of faults is the winner. When a tie exists, time is usually the deciding factor. The class may sometimes be scored on a "Time-plus-Faults" basis if circumstances surrounding the class are appropriate. See Scoring Methods for definitions. See Chapters 3 through 5 of USDAA Rules & Regulations for more details.
Nonstandard Classes Nonstandard classes are all other classes, including those classes that represent variations from the "Standard" class. Examples of more common nonstandard classes and that are held for USDAA title certificates are described below. A more detailed description of the class setting forth requirements for title can be found in Chapter 6 of USDAA official rules and regulations booklet.
Gamblers Gamblers is a point-basis class wherein handlers develop their own strategy for running a course in order to accumulate as many points as possible during the time allotted by the judge.
Jumpers Jumpers is a class that excludes all contact obstacles and occasionally weave poles. In other words, it is principally comprised of hurdles and tunnels, and may also include weave poles. It may be scored pursuant to "standard scoring" (i.e., running against a "standard course time" (SCT) that is set by the judge) or on a time-plus-faults basis, depending on how much emphasis is to be placed upon speed. For USDAA titling classes, standard scoring must be utilized. Rates for establishing SCT for different levels of competition are set forth in the rules. The competitor with the fewest penalties is the winner, and when a tie exists, time is frequently the deciding factor. A more detailed description of the class setting forth requirements for title can be found in Chapter 6 of USDAA official rules and regulations booklet.
Relay Relay classes are those that include two or more dog/handler teams competing on a course together. A more detailed description of the class setting forth requirements for title can be found in Chapter 6 of USDAA official rules and regulations booklet.
Snooker Named after the billiards game popular in Great Britain, snooker is a point-basis class wherein a handler develops their strategy for accumulating as many points as possible during the allotted time by performing the obstacles in "Snooker" sequence, which is defined by color.
Color
Point Value
Red
1
Yellow
2
Green
3
Brown
4
Blue
5
Pink
6
Black
7
Other Classes A variety of other classes, including variations on the above classes are occasionally offered on a competitive basis. These might include Time Gamble, Boxed Pairs, Strategic Pairs, Choose Your Own Course, Power & Speed, and more! Detailed descriptions of these classes when offered at an event shall be provided in the Agility Test Schedule (the official listing of classes and entry form, along with detailed provisions and conditions for entry) for the event.

3/5/2009 11:06:55 AM - 002059470505 It is interesting and great to know that USDAA sanctioned agility trials is a reality in Singapore. Pity the Malaysian and Singapore Quarantine Rules could not allow easy movement of dogs between the countries. If such barriers are removed, I will defintely want to compete in one of your USDAA sanctioned agility trials. Best wishes for your event in March. Do visit the Penang Dog Agility Association webiste- http://www.agility-penang.com
