Tyren's Party Pictures Up!

I uploaded Tyren's 4th birthday party pictures. If you have any to share, I'd love to see them! It was a great time! We had some really wild animals romping around at Tyren's animal party! :)

SCICON pics added!

I think I finally got all the pics tagged and described...Took FOREVER!

I added the album of SCICON educational signs because now that I'm on the board at The Discovery Center, I am looking for ideas to improve things there and I had mentioned to the Board that there were some really great ideas at SCICON, especially those boards. So I took pictures of all the ones I saw, to share the link with the Board, for ideas for The Discovery Center.

I didn't take as many pics of everything we did and everywhere we went on Saturday because I was trading off with Adam in keeping Tyren from killing himself. So I'm hoping Tim will upload some of his pics that will hopefully supplement what I took. I think he took scenery shots and such. He's quite the photographer now! :)

Just added all the family

I went to the trouble to add an album of "extended family" to our "about us" page because there's so many family members for non-family to keep track of...when I share this site with friends, I'd like them to have a reference point for all the faces they see in the albums.

Wow, my brain was all foggy after sorting through the descriptions for everyone's pictures! I may have missed some relationships...sorry if I did! I need a rest now! LOL!

added xmas pics

last night i uploaded all the xmas pics, including all the ones fred took. took out a few duplicates and fuzzy ones and such...but there's still a massive amount.

don't have a single pic of my kids opening gifts on xmas morning at home...because we only shot video of that. i'll have to get adam to edit a short video of that...

A Ram Sam Sam
Tyren singing our first "song-of-the-week", "A Ram Sam Sam"

Tweentle Tweentle Yiddow Sta
My 2 1/2 year old, Tyren (pronounced TEERen)'s rendition of Twinkle Twinkle...With some help from his 7yr old sister, Maeven. He was a little confused initially as to how much of the song we wanted him to sing, lol. And he's saying "see it?" because his daddy is a video photographer and he's used to being filmed and Daddy always shows him what he shot right after he shoots it. Anyway, enjoy my little darlings! :)

Maeven's 9th Birthday Party

Great thrift store find!
Great thrift store find!
The bowl, 10 cups, ladel and hooks were labeled $19.50...then it was 75% off because it was over 45 days old. Final cost: $4.88. Can you say SCORE?

I was so organized for this activity that I even printed up an instruction sheet on how to make 2 different flowers and laminated a couple copies!

Borrowed tables from The Discovery Center...thank goodness for connections! :)

Citlalli
Citlalli
One of Maeven's guests. Citlalli ("sit-lolly") is the daughter of Adam's ex step-cousin, Laural. Adam's mom was once married to Laural's uncle Bruce...which makes Adam's brother and sister (children of Bruce, different dad than Adam.) cousin to Laural. See? Ex step-cousin's child...does this make Citlalli an ex step 2nd cousin? since Maeven's cousins are technically 2nd cousins to Citlalli? I don't know, my brain is getting muddled...we just call her a "sorta cousin." :)

Floral print table in the foreground is the food table (we did our tea buffet style)...that's one of the table cloths I scored at a thrift store just a couple days ago! The table in the background is the girls' tea table (with the other tablecloth I scored at the same thrift store!)

I borrowed the tea cups/saucers from my mom's church. The bronzeware is my mom's, as are the pretty cloth napkins. I bought china dessert plates for .45cents at thrift store. Borrowed the sugar bowls/tongues, silver bells at table (for them to ring for more tea), tule around chairs from a friend. Made up "Tea Party Etiquette" sheets for each girl on butterfly stationary, one with each girl's name at each place at the table. I had people bring flowers to decorate the tables.

Tyren cheesin it for the camera. He wanted to be fancy too, so I put him in his Easter clothes. :) He wouldn't take his dress shoes off at bedtime! I had to cajole him out of them! LOL! Put his hair in a ponytail "like Daddy", so he felt even more fancy. :) Too cute.

My brother Tim took all these pics and he said that now he has great sympathy for anyone who tried to take pics of HIM when he was little...since he did the same sort of cheesy grin whenever the camera was on him. Except Tim usually had his eyes scrunced tight as well. Goofy boys.

You can see the straw purse that we decorated at the party. We had all sorts of beads and laces and frilly things to sew to these bags we found at 99cent store. Most of the girls had a hard time sewing things on them though, so they didn't get as decorated as I had hoped they would. Oh well. They still added to the ambience of "fancy." :)

Maeven picked her outfit out for this party like a month ago. Complete with a lingerie robe that I had from a lingerie ensemble I never wear. She liked how fancy it looked with the dress she had picked out. Too funny.

Don't know what he was upset about but this is classic Tyren when he's disappointed or upset about something now...dramatic sad face and sagging shoulders. Just like his sister, who has been doing this pose since she was younger than him. Ah, the drama of childhood.

Isn't the table cloth just gorgeous?
I put cloth napkins (borrowed from my mother-in-law) over everything because we had a fly issue.
The flowers came from Laural's garden and Alisa's garden. They both brought a bunch of roses...GORGEOUS! A few other friends brought the miscellaneous flowers in vases on the tea table. So we had flowers galore! BEAUTIFUL!!
The paper plates/napkins and plastic spoons were for the grownups. The girls had the china and bronzeware.

We made these paper fans with construction paper and doilies as well. Although I think Maeven might have been the only one that actually made one...the other girls weren't very interested. This was another activity I had set up ahead of time with instructions printed and laminated and put on the tables.
So we had paper fans and decorating purses on one activity table & paper flowers & butterflies on the other. Table cloths were just plastic ones from Dollar Tree.

Hubby doing his duty as video guy. Apparently our camera battery died pretty quick though (even though I had it on the charger overnight), so then he brough out his BIG HD camera (he does this for a living), so it felt like we had a camera crew on us the rest of the afternoon...what with the big camera and then my bro doing the still camera shooting (my brother is quite good and sells his pics on stock photography sites, so I had both still and video covered. Ain't I lucky?) :)

See the pretty flowers? Best idea to ask guests to bring flowers from their gardens!! I had no time or money to do real flowers, so this worked perfectly! :)

The fancy straw hats on the tables were from a church function my mom did awhile back...some sort of spring thing and she made pretty hats w/silk flowers to decorate the tables...so she loaned me those for the party tables and the napkins also had spring hats/flowers on them.

The girls got a kick out of the silver bells, which I told them to ring if they wanted more tea. They quickly decided I was a waitress and asked me for anything and everything. I happily obliged, but man they kept me hopping! I had to just stand near the table and wait to hear that tinkling. It was so funny...they even conspired to drive me crazy by all ringing their bells together a few times. Crazy girls.

My brother and my mother-in-law, along with Maeven, worked for quite awhile on these sandwiches. They used heart cookie cutters to cut out the pieces. Sandwiches were turkey/cheese, and ham/cheese. I had meant to do pb&j as well, but totally forgot. Also had bought veggies w/dip and fruit with chocolate dip and TOTALLY forgot until the next morning! Too much going on in my brain that day, I tell ya!

The cookies Maeven bought the week before at 99cent store, along with the tea bags. She used her own allowance since I let her know that money was tight this year and we could use her help if she wanted to help pay for some things. She actually really was delighted to buy some of the stuff. And today she offered to save some of her birthday money to buy Xmas gifts this year! What a generous girl! (But no, I won't let her use her special birthday money on Xmas. I'm just touched.)

Tyr enjoyed ringing the bell to make Mommy hop as much as the girls.

Tyr was just crushed that I hadn't set a place at the table for him. There just wasn't room & it didn't occur to me he would want to sit there with the girls. So I asked one of the girls to share space with him, which she had no problem doing (Ayanna's such a sweetie, and she likes Tyren, so that helped)...but then when one of our guests didn't arrive til near the end of the party, Tyr was able to take her spot.

I was going to hide these around the yard and have the girls search for them. But time ran out and I just didn't feel like dealing with that. So I just put them on an empty glass tray and let the kids take handfuls of them home, in their bags they decorated at the party.

These are glass jewels you can buy all the time at Dollar Tree and we LOVE, so always find reasons to get them. :)

At the end of the night, checking the booty. they each only got a little in the bottom of the pumpkins from all those houses.

I'm ok with that.

I think its because there's SOOOO many kids that go trick or treating on Van Ness (where we went), that they all only give out one piece per kid. I cannot even imagine how much money those people must have to spend on candy. No joke, there were SCADS of kids...like droves and droves...it was really hard to get to and from most of the houses.

I think we'll try a quieter neighborhood next year. This is the second year we did Van Ness, but with all the super scary/gross masks and all the oodles of kids...I think we're better off in my parents Clovis neighborhood for next year.

Salamander Life Cycle Board
Salamander Life Cycle Board
This sign is used regularly for the aquatic trail, to show the life cycle of the California Newt (aka salamander) since SCICON is a good place to find these little buggers, especially in the late winter/early spring. The kids get to actually handle them and see them up close. Lucky trails might even be able to see the different life stages live and in living color...I rememeber finding the egg sacs and occasionally netting the larvae...if you're lucky. And an adult salamander was often kept in a box right near this sign, during the times of the year that it was harder to find the salamanders in the surrounding areas.

Bear Creek Trail Sign
Bear Creek Trail Sign
The Bear Creek Trail is the one I believe is also known as the "Aquatics Trail"...this is a trail about aquatic life, such as salamanders and the life cycles of insects that lay their eggs in the water, and such. It used to have a really cool picture detailing the life cycles of 3 stage and 4 stage insects...dunno what happened to it...looks like it's currently in the process of being redone.

I'm guessing this was a bat house that fell down? Normally I think these are put under the eaves of buildings, to encourage bats to rest there at night...since they eat such huge quantities of insects at night when they are feeding, they are very useful animals to have around!

I'll have to ask Rick Mitchell about this one...it looked like it was in the process of being built or it fell down? Not sure. Interesting idea, though...I've never heard the term "solar composting" before. I'm guessing that's what you are doing when you are not using worms, though. :)

Cool idea for boards that can be opened when you bring a group over to it. Protected from weather when closed.

Acorn woodpeckers are everywhere at SCICON, so I'm guessing this is used to show what to look for. Perhaps on the bird trail. Also could be used to emphasize the unique characteristics of these birds and the differences in the male/female.

I'm guessing they use this board (it wasn't there when I was at SCICON) to emphasize the life in the riparian community at SCICON. This is the first community you visit with the students on Sky Trail. And this board is located near the creek.

This is on the same structure as the water cycle and tree life cycle boards...I think they are emphasizing how so many products are made out of trees...but it seems to be falling apart...I'm guessing it might be one that has been targeted for redoing.

This is on the back of the water cycle board...it was done by a friend of mine...but I see they whited out the details...I'm guessing because there's since been a lot of new buildings created. I'm guessing this is another that will be redone soon.

This is in the parking lot picnic area. This area is used by the 5th grade day trips, so I'm guessing they wanted to give the kids something to think about and do.

Gorgeous board structure!
Gorgeous board structure!
This one is fairly new, I think...I don't remember it last year...Or maybe I just didn't notice it. It's just gorgeous! All the paintings around it and the structure itself with the stone base. Very cool! There are like 6 different boards on this...see next pics for closeups.

This was really impressive! Very well done! I'm guessing these are used for the Planetarium trail, where the students learn about our solar system, on their way to the final destination, the SCICON planetarium (very small one, but very cool!)

Birds of prey board
Birds of prey board
This board is at SCICON's raptor rehabilitation center. They do shows at the center, bringing out their teaching birds and talk to the kids about raptors and their role in the web of life. This is part of the vertebrate trail and the museum trail, both of which end up at the museum, which is next to the raptor center. At least that's how it was when I was there...I don't know if it's still done this way for sure.

There's a tiny frog in here somewhere...really there is!

Convoluted Rocks
Convoluted Rocks
Our surroundings. This area really can't be described properly. It's beyond beautiful. Even though I've been here a ton of times (one time even in the middle of the night!) I never can get over how gorgeous it is. I wish I had taken more pictures, but I spent much of my time trying to keep Tyren from taking a swim or falling off a rock and cracking his head open. A daunting task, I assure you! Hoping my brother got some better pics of the scenery. I just focused on what the kids were doing.

There used to be a pair of golden eagles that had a nest way up on top of that cliff. I saw them once and was able to show my trail group...pretty darn cool! I'm sure they are long gone now, though.

Sally-mander
Wouldn't ya know it? We didn't see very many salamanders all day...like maybe less than 10...(I was expecting a LOT because of the rain)...but because it was a gorgeous sunny day, they mostly stayed out of sight. On our way back to the cars, the sun was starting to go down and we spotted more salamanders in this spot by the parking area...they really don't like the sun...they come out when its cloudy. *sigh* And I was just happy that we didn't get rained on, but a little cloud cover would have been nice to encourage more salamander sightings!

Sprouting acorns
Sprouting acorns
I'm guessing they have the kids plant these on the tree nursery trail. The tree nursery is WAY more impressive now than it was when I worked at SCICON. They've really developed a lot of really neat things! Including this little house to keep the acorns safe from pesky wildlife that would love to eat them up! I can still remember many times going to my car and seeing turkey vultures all over the compost in the tree nursery (the tree nursery is right next to the parking lot)...I'm sure the squirrels would really love these acorns.

Clouds rolling in
It was a beautiful sunny day during our time at SCICON (amazing since it POURED down rain the day before), though cold. But sadly, the salamanders don't like the sun, so we didn't see as many as I had hoped. But wouldn't ya know it? The clouds were rolling in as we were leaving!! ARGH!

I love this picture of our little Birthday Princess. :)

We don't seem to have a picture of the cake...it was a Duplo (Lego) block...we did Lego colors: red/yellow/green/blue for the decor for the party. And encouraged everyone to bring Lego/Duplo as presents (if they wanted to bring something), since we got her a Duplo table for her birthday. She got SO much Duplo for this birthday, it was awesome!

That's my mom helping, and Tessa on the right of the picture, Emma with her back to us. And me helping my mom try to bring the gifts back to Maeven's attention. (She appears to be having too much fun with the party blower, LOL!)

On the far left is Emma, next to me is Tessa, then me, then Maeven, Temoc and his mom Jean (sitting), and in the background is Monique.

Lousy picture but you can sorta make out that the cake was a Lego brick. Had cupcakes on top to make the raised parts of the brick.

Those are our playstands my dad made for us in the background next to Monique.

Uncle "Bob" (Tim) having too much fun with the new Lego. Maeven called him Bob for awhile because she couldn't say "Tim", so I told Tim to pick a new name, something she could say. So he picked Bob. And there ya have it. We all called him Uncle Bob for about 2 years, LOL! Occasionally still comes up.
