Cumberland Gap Tunnel

The Cumberland Gap Tunnel is an engineering marvel.

The Cumberland Gap tunnel is actually a set of twin tunnels 4,600 feet in length. Each has two dividing lanes and at he tallest point the tunnels are 30 feet in height. Cross passages located every 300 feet connect the two tunnels and are equipped with fire extinguishers and phones for emergency use.

We rode to Lake Placid 3/16/11

Lake Placid Artists

Various artists have given their talents to paint beautiful murals throughout downtown Lake Placid. These murals depict the heritage of the town and

attract many tourists.

Lake Placid, Florida, nicknamed Caladium Capital, produces 98 percent of the worlds caladium bulbs. The Caladium plant was cultivated in Lake Placid during the mid twentieth century.

We did a repeat of our Green Swamp ride and I have added another album for that ride

 

We had another great ride Wed, 3/2/11 rode over to Palmetto FL and over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Kevin, I and a couple friends did the ride a couple of weeks ago but took the whole Group this time. We had 22 bikes and I believe everyone had a great time and we all got home safe.

 On they way over to the bridge we have found a little route that was a lot of fun, called the Tail of the Gecko,

OK, there may not be 318 curves here.
But this well hidden Florida motorcycle ride is well worth the effort to find it!

Florida may not have mountains, canyons and the ultimate twisty roads, but what it does have is some of the country's best riding weather when the rest of the country can't figure out how they're going to get their car dug out of the snow, much less be trying to ride their bike somewhere.

This twisty gem is tucked away in the middle of the state and has a personality all its own. Kind of like that little reptile that is always trying to sell you insurance, this guy's busy trying to get you to get out and ride!

The curves get started right away

As soon as you get started you get a few curves to warm up.

But before you get too carried look around so you don't make costly mistake.

There's not much shoulder between the edge of the road and that farm country barbwire catch fence, so ride well within the envelope!

Farms and Horses

There are pretty white fences and horse pastures along the way.

A lot of the locals own horses, so if you see them riding on the side of the road, slow down and give them as much room as you can so you don't startle their horse.

I've found that a little courtesy more often than not results in a friendly wave (and not a less than friendly hand gesture).

 

Tree Lined Sweepers

Pines and oaks line much of the ride framing pastures and fields.

This road follows the land instead plowing through it, creating a challenging and fun motorcycle ride.

 

Tight Turns Mix It Up

Scenery reminiscent of north Florida and southern Georgia leads into several tight right and left-handers.

Smooth braking with a late apex lets you roll on the throttle exiting the tighter turns.

This is when you remember how much fun a twisty road is on a good bike.

Hills!

Even rarer than a good set of twisties in a Florida is a hill or two.

Unless you're on a Vespa these might not require a lot of throttle but even these minor changes in elevation add some fun to the ride.

More Esses and Sweepers

The road continues to flow with the land as you re-connect with your twisty road riding skills.

My son, I and three of our friends Don , Ron  and Roger  just got back from a four day motorcycle trip to the Cumberland gap in Ky, Va, and Tn. we rode about 1000 miles.

 

We spent the first night in Madison IN. the second night in Middlesboro KY, and Sat. night in Lexington, KY,These pictures in my Cumberland Gap album we took near Somerset KY at the Cumberland State park, near Middlesboro, KY at the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, North of Middlesboro KY at Pine Mountain State Resort Park, and some near Madision IN

We have had a lot of nice rides this summer. We take day trips about once every week usually on Wednesdays and ride 200 to 300 miles.  

 Next we are taking off for a weekend trip for three or four days to Middlesboro KY to the Cumberland Gap, should be a great ride.
