Greetings from NYC! I am having a fabulous time and spending the weekend in a wonderful apartment (thank you Bonnie and Ed!). All of the pups are home, and I am very much having dog withdrawal! I am drawn to every pooch on the street and find myself walking in to every pet related store I pass. It is indeed very odd to go from caring for our seven adult dogs, and eight pups to no animals in a short period of time. But, I am sure on Sunday my pooches will great me very, very enthusiastically!
We have had some minor issues with the pups at home, one ate various things from the yard and ended up with vomiting and diarrhea at the vet, another basically played so hard she forgot to eat, got low blood sugar, then became very lethargic. So, these are things to watch out for: your pup is basically similar to an infant in that everything is new to them, and they will try and eat twigs, berries, grass, anything they find in yard, including animal droppings, will be fair game. Keep an eye on them. Also, don't push the food, typically a pup will eat when they get hungry, but do make sure they are eating some, and napping! Make your pup "quit" and give them quiet time every couple hours to sleep and recharge in their crates. Teach your children that when the pup is in her crate, she is off limits. They are to stay away. They are babies and need naps! Just some helpful advise, I want only the best for them and their new families, and an easy and unstressed transition between my home and yours. Please call if you need me, I am never truly on vacation :) 910.992.6320. Best wishes and kisse to "our babies." -Cory

Off to NYC very, very early on Thursday morning. I hope all the babies are adjusting well? I am bringing Indy to NYC, then on Friday my daughter Kendra is bringing Firecracker and Glory to Alexandria, Va. Hubby is on puppy duty for a day, but he is very, very good at it and they will no doubt be spoiled rotten. So that I don't have to worry that any of you have issues and need to get hold of me, here's my cell, 910.992.6320. For those who are yet to get their pups, Kendra's cell is 910.603.4845. I hope every one is loving their new babies, this is the hard part for me, letting go after falling in love eight times. Cheers.

Wow! I feel like I have an empty nest and there are still four pups here! Patriot, Rocket, and Sparkler have left already this weekend, Libby tomorrow, and then I am bringing Indy to NYC on Thurs., and my daughter is bringing Firecracker and Glory to Alexandria, Va. on Friday. It will be quiet here, but not for long! My daughter's dog, Pippa, is due to deliver on 9/18. We are debating whether or not to raise the pups here or at Kendra's house. We will probably raise them here as I am home most of the time.
Thank you for posting the pictures every one! I love seeing them, and getting reports on the pups. As you can imagine, it's very hard to let them go, but equally as exciting to see them placed in wonderful homes with caring families. -C

Treat: I don't feed but recommend Charlie Bears and Bil Jac Liver. See the topics page versus comments. On re-read I guess your question is about treats for Kongs. I don't use them but I know a lot of people put peanut butter in them.
To begin with for grooming all you need a a comb with rotating teeth if you can find one, Petsmart sells them, but sometimes the rotating teeth combs are harder to find. You will find this is all you need for the first few months, then you can add a rake with rotating teeth for tangles, and a slicker brush for smoothing feet only (as that tears the body hair). I will give everyone a grooming lesson on pick up.
Shampoo: I like the high end human shampoos best as they have hair. I like Nexxus Hummectrus, and Biologe. I usually use human conditioners as well.
Pups are bored, bored, bored today. My grand daughter is here but she won't play with them as they are at the "eating feet" stage. And, it's raining outside so I haven't let them run at all.

Grooming Supplies and Training Treats
Cory,
I am getting ready to place another order with PetEdge. Is there a particular comb or brush, shampoo or conditioner that you like to buy from them that I should know about?
Also, I have purchased a Puppy Kong to amuse the puppy in the crate. At this stage, is there a safe treat that I can put inside the Kong?
Thanks,

Suzanne is the blog owner and is on this group just because she likes to see pup pictures (it gets addictive). Say hello Suzanne!

Bonnie, I've been thinking the same thing about staying in touch. I really hope people come back here and post pictures. As thrilled as I'm going to be to have Patriot home, I'm going to miss seeing all the pups! I'd really love to see what they all look like as adults.
You will love Bebe's blog, it's a hoot! I discovered it months ago, it was a big factor in our deciding on a Coton de Tulear, and for the longest time I didn't realize that Cory was Bebe's breeder!

Cory,
So excited about the photographer and I will be sure to check out her blogspot -- also, please reserve a copy of Eli de Luca's book for me! Thrilled that you have some for all of us. I'm going to visit Bebe Darling's blog right now!
I hope we all stay in touch on this site after our puppies come home to us?

Here is a blog spot link to the photographer I am using: http://www.michelleboltonphotography.blogspot.com/#sidebar
Not sure how she will do with squirming pups, but we will give it a try! She is also photographing my grand daughter, the Coton are props. But, I asked her to get some individual pictures for all of you to maybe buy.

I forgot to tell every one! I have a professional photographer doing a photo shoot of the pups at a 200 year old house on Saturday morning. She usually puts her pictures on line for purchase, so once all pups are assigned, you can order your own "baby picture." She does an incredible job, and they will be wonderful keepsake photos. She does a lot of cool mounting on boards and that sort of thing too, so there is a lot you can do with the pictures. I will post information later on.

Eli de Luca mailed me several copies of her book that she wrote about Cotons. It's a great book, a bit pricey at $75 but all the Coton books are. The big discount is that you do not have to pay shipping from Europe which is some $15. If you would like to buy a copy please let me know, all proceeds go back to Eli.

You two are too much. He most likely has both, one just hasn't descended yet, it's pretty common. If one doesn't come down they "fetch" it at neuter surgery. I have had them "yo-yo" before, come down then suck back up. BTW, Libby is quite the athlete, she weighed in smallest of the four at the vet yesterday, but has scaled every box I've put her in. This morning, I found her on the play room floor. She had been climbing the the top of the crate inside their box, and then bailing out (three foot drop!) so I moved the crate to the middle of the pen and the little booger somehow still got out! I think maybe she scaled the water bottle I have in there. I always find the tiny ones are the most athletic. Look at Bebe Darling's blog! I think Bebe Darling is our smallest adult pup to date but you would think she is Wonderwoman. Pups are out in the outdoor pen this morning after a game of "capture the pine cone in the yard." They have a little added roughage to their diets now: pine cones, they love to bite them apart! Off to clean a very messy pen now, they had a poop party last night, but at least it was on the paper side. -C

Oh well...who needs balls anyway?!!!

I took four of the pups in for physicals and shots today, the others go next week. Everyone was fine and healthy and checked out perfect apart from Rocket who still has one undescended testicle, but that is totally normal at his age. Everything else was great, tight knees, good bites, eyes and hearts and everything else perfect! She looks at some 15 different criteria and they passed on all counts.
Oh, and I did get my video camera to work. I am planning on taking film on Friday for sure when one of my Alzheimer clients is coming to see the pups, and maybe on Thurs. as well as friends are visiting.

Cory,
Love the new pictures and the outdoor video. What a great job you are doing with Doodle bug. We all, I think, feel something special for that little guy. He is adorable!

Pups are all doing well. I feel lots of little teeth coming in. If you visit, warn your children, they will chew your ankles, fingers, and whatever appendages that are sticking out, LOL. This is what I refer to as the piranha stage! They are all still nursing, but getting ground kibble and goats milk twice a day. Pee pad training is going well, when they are in their boxes. Both litters will keep one side clean to sleep in, one side to potty in. I wish I could say it was a clean on the play room floor. They go about half the time on the pads, the other, wherever. They are allowed to roam the play room floor about three hours per day, and love it!
Come see us if you can, any interaction the pups have with strangers and with children and elderly is a great thing! It's just now mom's immunities are wearing off and the pups are more at risk for catching diseases, so I do have several rules to follow before you visit that I can explain privately.
I hope everyone is nesting, if not, get busy!
8/11/2009 6:18:34 PM - 002072487163
OMGosh!!!! I just saw the video. They are growing by leaps and bounds and so adorable! I can't wait to show the girls the video when they get home from school.

Both litters started the weaning process today with their first taste of baby cereal. It will progress to a bit of cereal and ground kibble, and then when the mama's wean, just kibble and goats milk. They loved the cereal, some more than others. It's funny, but the younger pups were better at eating it!
The two litters will remain in separate areas until they are weaned with an occasional visit. At about six weeks of age, I will combine the litters and let them be one happy group. What fun that will be!
I had a big laugh this morning when one of our puppy owners said to me that we identified the pups wrong in the video: Patriot and Sparkler were confused. It's funny because they don't look anything alike, but when I record I am looking at them through a one-inch window on my Flip camera without my glasses on, and it's really hard to see! But, still, glad to hear you all know your pups and are paying attention. It actually makes me feel proud that everyone is so interested!
I am washing about 1.5 loads of puppy towels per day, and I expect that to jump to 3-4 loads soon! Katey's pups are using the piddle pad in their pen about 70 percent of the time though, and that's great. Soph's pups are just learning. Typically, before they go home I have them trained to use the pads about 95 percent of the time, and then it is an easy transition to outdoors. They will start going outside for bits of time here and there next week, then eventually, they will be allowed to play outside in their puppy pen in the mornings and evening when it's not too hot. I think this is important so they become accustomed to both indoor and outdoor noises, they get to see our cats, birds flying over, bunnies in our yard, etc. The pen I use outside is about 15-feet long and six wide of plastic gating, I keep half in the garage, half out, and the outdoor half is covered for shade and protection. Of course, I am always home when they are in the outdoor pen.
Come see us!
Re: potty training...
Hi everyone. Sorry I didn't have input in to this, for some reason I never got updates on the site that there was new content.
I think what you are all experiencing is part of the process, learn, forget, relearn. But you can always try "boot camp," if things are real bad. It's tough, but works. Crate in the house only, out to potty, treats and praise, back in crate. It seems cruel but if you take them out often it really isn't. They soon learn that pottying is only done outside. None of them should be pottying in the crates though. Do you leave food and water in the crate? I never do that, it's natural to want to potty after eating. Also, make the crate smaller, they really don't like to lay in their own mess. Hope things are better. And Linda, I was thinking your screened in porch was great initially but also thought that it could be an issue in that Rocket does not differentiate between going out there to potty and going outside. My dogs do this all the time. They think nothing of eliminating on our front porch upstairs when out there, it is after all "outside."
Re: potty training...
Well, they're just like that wonderful stuffed animal you had as a kid, only they're real!
Re: weight
OK here we go, Hilo's four month visit today and he weighs (drumroll please) 8 pounds and 4 ounces! Now the vet is saying he thinks he'll be about seventeen when he's grown. That would be good, i'd like to be able to squeeze him onto an airplane!
So it basically sounds like the boys are big and the girls are small, relatively speaking
Re: potty training...
Thanks ladies for all the support! We are starting to put Rocket on a lease to go outside to potty and it is helping. So we will see!!! No poop accidents today and only 2 pee accidents....we all say..."if he wasn't so cute we would get mad at him!" There is something about Coton's little faces that jsut make you go "awwww"!!!
Re: potty training...
Linda,
I just saw your comment again about Rocket running through the leaves when he's supposed to be pottying...
I forgot to tell you something I've been doing, which has helped tremendously, and that is I take him out on his leash to potty. With a six foot lead, there's not much to do, so he might as well pee. I started doing this because I was having problems with him eating all kind of weeds and mulch and mushrooms growing in my lanscscaping (oh,, the joys of florida...) Anyway, if we go out without the leash, it's to play. If we go out with the leash, it's to potty. It's made a huge difference!
Re: potty training...
Variable success here. Excitement pee? Oh yeah, every time. I don't even count that! I don't think he can help it.
We have days of no accidents in the house followed by days with lots of accidents. The last few days, not so good. he peed on my daughter's carpet just now while I was changing her diaper and he had just peed outside not long ago. Yesterday, big giant pile of poop in front of the TV. He doesn't tell us when he needs to go, but I recognize a certain look he gets when he needs to. Honestly the only thing about your post that surprised me is the poop in the crate. Hilo has never done that, but his crate is quite small, just enough room for him to lie in comfortably. I seem to remember that you have a bigger crate for Rocket?
For us, everything else has been going so well, that I'm pretty forgiving of the potty accidents. He doesn't nip the crap out of us anymore, and his general "scaredness" is much better (though not completely gone). He is so big and just unbelievably fluffy, but you all know about that I guess!
Elise
Re: potty training...
With the poochie bells, are you ringing them when you take Rocket out every hour? We tried to be incredibly consistent -- every time we took Chloe out (and we are still doing this), we ring the bells and say "Chloe, outside!" and then when we get to the grass, we say "Chloe, go potty!" She picked up the idea of ringing the bell herself in a couple of days. She never goes poop inside the house, but she has had a few pee accidents this week (especially when she is excited to see us). I wonder if it is maybe because she is teething or something? She has lost of a lot of baby teeth recently!
potty training...
Ok..either Rocket is just not getting it or it is a boy thing going on here. I got the Poochie bells...he initially was intimidated by them but wouldn't you know it he rang them on Friday night to go outside...but all he did was run thorugh the leaves! He does not tell us when he needs to go outside. Very frustrating.. I take him out every hour and he will go about 50% of the time but then if he doesn't go outside he will pee in the house without warning. He has even pooped in his crate 2 times in the last week. We have him gated off downstairs, thank goodness there are only a few area rugs and the rest hardwood. He also goes out on our screened in porch and out a doggie door onto the deck. He also pees when he gets excited. Am I the only one having problems? Be honest now!!!
Re: Doodle weight at 4 months
I just weighed Doodle and he's a strapping 7 lbs. 2 oz. this morning on his 4 month birthdate. I also posted new pictures of him and Ruby (the female GSD) playing. They get along SO well and he climbs all over her, bites her ears and toes and she tolerates it very well. Just this past week Doodle figured out how to jump up on the couch, so Ruby's "safe haven" has been busted~~!! All the pups are looking so good, and I agree that these aren't really the 10-12 pound dog that Cory promised......more like the 80 lbs predicted by Elise!
Doodle is doing very well with the pee-pee pads, but he just poops so much, so often, that it's hard to get him trained to go outside to do that. I swear every time he goes to poop, he has to do it at least 4 times before he's completely done. So, one trip outside just doesn't cut it. But, he goes consistently in one spot and it's still so small that I don't mind picking up after him, but he sees the other dogs go outside through the front door, on a very large tie-out rope, and he patiently stands there waiting his turn. He just doesn't realize that the tie-out rope weighs more than he does..... and he thinks they just go out there to play. No clue what they're really doing~~!!
Re: weight
Chloe (formerly Sparkler) went to the vet yesterday and is still a tiny little thing -- 5 pounds, 9 ounces, which surprised me because she eats a lot! She is doing well on the potty training, so when we are home she has free run of the downstairs. No poop accidnets in as long as I can remember, and only the occasional pee accident when she is excited to see us. She is still busily ringing her poochie bell!
Re: weight
Hi Bonnie! Glad to hear Teddy's vet appointment went well! And six pounds, the little thing! I've decided that Hilo is going to be approximately 80 pounds...kidding! He's getting big though, which suits us just fine.
To answer your question, Hilo (aka HiloPuppy, PuppyPuppy, PuppyShmuppy, Mr. Puppy, Mr. Hilo Puppy) roams free downstairs (where I have tile) but not upstairs (which is carpet). He tends to follow me everywhere, if he's not in my sight, chances are he's getting into some kind of trouble! He doesn't yet "tell" us when he needs to go, though I am getting pretty good at reading his body language and facial expressions. We've been back on track the last few days, which means he just waits until we take him out, and we take him out at least every three hours.
We love the little guy!
Elise
Re: Doodle - Update
Really happy to hear about Doodle bunny. We all love him!
Re: house training
Elise,
It sounds to me that you are doing very well with Hilo. We have Teddy pretty much under observation in the house. She is in her indoor pen - which I call her 'Condo" - or let free in the room we are in when I know that she has just been outside and done her ps and poohs.
Is Hilo pretty much free to go where he wants in the house? Does he know yet to let you know when he needs to go out?
Re the weight thing, you are right, Teddy was a small puppy but you never know where they'll end up.
Fun to be in touch with all of you.
Bonnie
Re: weight
Teddy, formerly "Indie", was weighed yesterday at the vet's office. She is perfect of course - and weighs 6.1 lbs.!!
Re: weight
Hey there Bonnie! It'll be interesting to see what Teddy weighs, she was one of the smaller ones if I recall. It is helpful to know how everyone's doing, isn't it? When I read that Teddy and Rocket are still having toileting accidents, then I think, Ok this is normal! Hilo was doing great with toileting all of last week, but this week, its out the window! Two accidents in the house so far today, lol! I gave him a nice bath today, it's so funny to see how small he looks when he's all wet! I've been thinking that he looks huge, but it's not him at all, it's the hair! He's got an inch of white roots under the black on his face, so I can see how much bigger his hair has become!
