Duffle Bags for Children in Foster Care
If you have ever seen a child who has been taken into foster care carrying all their belongings from place to place, you probably noticed that their suitcase is usually a GARBAGE BAG. Their world has been turned upside down and they drag around what they have left in a GARBAGE BAG, probably a visual expression of exactly how they feel about themselves. Our goal is to eliminate GARBAGE BAGS as an acceptable form of luggage for these children whose lives have been disrupted. If we all pull together we can reach this goal.
A simple Duffle Bag to carry their possessions could have a significant impact on these children. South Dade Foster and Adoptive Parent Association will assemble comfort item donations such as stuffed animals, books and toiletries into duffle bags and deliver them to police stations and social service agencys in the area where they will be given to children. We invite you to be part of this very important cause! Your small act of kindness will make a monumental impact on a helpless child at a time when their world has been shaken to the core. Contact Martha Pedroso at 305-890-4820 and ask how you can help.

We again had very little turnout to our monthly meeting; therefore, the December meeting has been canceled.
The following was discussed/agreed at the meeting held on November 21, 2009:
- The goal/purpose of the association, at the present, will be for educational purposes and to obtain the continuing education credits needed to renew our Foster Care License (8 credits yearly).
- We will meet quarterly next year, the first meeting being held on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Kids Hope United. The first meeting of the year is mandatory for all foster parents. We're hoping to invite some of the judges to one of the meetings provided we begin to have a significant turnout.
- We will solicit topics, via e-mail and this website to arrange for speakers at next year's meeting. For instance, the June meeting will cover Hurricane Preparedness. We anticipate that we may even be able to have two speakers on a given meeting.
- The dues will be used to either pay for childcare at the meetings (which will be provided at all meetings RSVP is necessary two weeks prior to the meetings), breakfast for the meetings, and possibly to compensate speakers.
-We will use this website and e-mail as the main source of communication. We will also use a phone tree to provide information of upcoming events.
Please feel free to comment or ask questions via this forum, or of course you can e-mail me at maritza4mrcg@msn.com.
Kindly,
Maritza Moreno, President
South Dade Foster & Adoptive Parent Association
At our last meeting (10/17/09) we learned that Rene Burton resigned as president of the association. I was nominated and voted to take her place and hope to do my best. Attendance was minimal (we had 8 foster parents show up). None of the board members were present.
My husband and I have been resource foster parents for only two years; we have one foster child, a 5 month old son.
I hope to learn from those of you who have greater experience. I created this website as a means of keeping all informed. For the remainder of this year we will have the monthly meetings on the 3rd Saturday of each month. The remaining meetings are on:
10 AM to
10 AM to
We will be focusing the purpose of the association on the continuing education that is required to maintain our license as foster parents. For the following year, we plan to reduce our meetings to once quarterly. We will arrange those dates at our next meeting.
If you feel comfortable with this, I would like you to become a member of the site and include in your profile the amount of years you have been a foster/adoptive parent. I'm hoping this will become a resource for all of us to exchange tips and learn from each other. Please feel free to upload pictures and any comments you might have.
