We miss you Leslie!
One of our former #1 singles players, Leslie Kroschel, died in a car crash in March 2006. Leslie played #1 singles her senior year (13-2 record) and #2 singles her junior year (12-6 record). Her senior year, Leslie led her team to a 10-4 record and 2nd place in the Classic Suburban Conference.
In honor of Leslie, her family has made an incredible donation to greatly enhance the Roosevelt tennis facilities. An 8th court has been added to the west side of the complex. A backboard has also been added and a tennis shed has been built. We cannot thank the Kroschel family enough for their generosity.....not just for their donation, but for sharing their inspiring daughter with the South St. Paul Girls Tennis Program.

Grant Money - Need Ideas
Hey! Our tennis program has some walk-a-thon & grant money, both which need to be used soon. A couple ideas I have are an iPad (for video-taping technique and showing video right on the spot, etc) and new scorecards (because our plastic ones are so brittle that they keep breaking). Any other good ideas? Please post soon!

SECTION TOURNAMENT
The Section 3AA Team Tournament has been concluded. South St. Paul lost to #2 seed Eagan in the quarterfinals. Rosemount upset Prior Lake to become the 3AA Champs.
On Friday, Oct 14, the Section 3AA Individual Tournaments began. Our doubles teams of Emily Reibert/Abby Palmquist and Allison Nordman/Brigette Miller both made it easily into the second round. Reibert/Palmquist then lost to the #1 seed from Visitation. Nordman/Miller lost in the 2nd round to the #2 seed from Eagan. Both teams played well, but were facing some of the toughest players in our section.
Emily Engelmeier made it through the 1st two rounds of the 3AA Singles Tournament, as did Laura Sonday. Emily stroked the ball well in a hard-hitting quarterfinal match against Lily Foley from Visitation, but lost 6-3, 6-0. Laura had the #3 seed worried as she battled for 3 hours against Rachel Schneider from Holy Angels before losing 6-7, 6-4, 3-6.
Hats off to a great season Packers!

FROM SSP TO NYC
South St. Paul Girls Tennis Team travels to US Open
The South St. Paul Girls Tennis Team traveled to New York City over Labor Day weekend to watch the US Open. Coach Pepper Meyer, in her 12th year of coaching the Packers, takes her team every few years. This year 11 players and 5 adults made the trip. The goals of the trip are to learn from and become inspired by professional tennis players, to become closer as a team, to give the student-athletes an opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of one of the world’s largest cities, and to provide student-athletes with the cultural experience of attending a Broadway show.
The team traveled to NYC on Thursday, September 1st. When they got to NYC, they enjoyed the afternoon in Central Park before going out for a team dinner and to the Broadway Show, Jersey Boys.
The team attended the US Open all day on Friday and Saturday. Their bright pink shirts brought the Packers fame at the Open as they were interviewed and had pictures taken by USOpen.org and the USTA, and became known as the “pink girls” on the grounds. The team enjoyed watching local tennis star, Eric Butorac compete in both mixed and men’s doubles. They loved watching tennis at such a high level, from such a close perspective. And, they collected many autographs from the pros.
On Friday, the South St. Paul Tennis Association was “spotlighted” by the USTA for their commitment to tennis in South St. Paul. Most of the players who traveled to the US Open were coaches in the SSP QuickStart Summer Tennis Program. As part of the spotlight, the group was given a behind-the-scenes tour of Arthur Ashe Stadium where they got to see the media room, players lounge, and interview room.
On Sunday, the team had a private bus tour of New York City and saw sights such as the Cathedral Church of St. John, the Statue of Liberty, and the new World Trade Center. After a delayed flight, the team made it back to the Twin Cities Sunday night.
The Packers have started their tennis season 4-0.
