rise and shine!
We woke up early to drive back to montreal for Seder #2.

a nice car
We like the look of this car, and I think my mom should buy one.

Stop #!: Virginia
The Smokey Pig in Ashland, VA closes at 9pm, so we phoned in our order from the car, and arrived at 9:00 on the dot.

the sign (at night)

The real deal
Always drive around back to see if they are really using wood. . . the Smokey Pig certainly does!

Our was waiting for us, so ...
We checked into a hotel and laid it out. It was machine-chopped, not my preference, but very tasty.

chopped BBQ with collard greens
There wasn't enough sauce, but if we were inside the restaurant, there'd be a bottle on the table.

Town Center, Lexington, NC
This town has 1 BBQ joint per 1000 residents, but all are closed on Sunday - the day we arrived.

BBQ graffiti
Even the rebels love Barebecue!

Smoke signals
The Grand- Daddy of Lexingtoin Barbecue. You can see the smoke from a mile away.

Aspark of hope on a Sunday
This guy was smoking food for Xmas orders. He told us that there is 1 place open on Sundays...

we'll find it. . .
approaching Barbecue ground zero - Lexington, north Carolina.

Welcome! (even on sunday!)
We were so happy they were open! (but I still had time to take a photo)

The menu

The pits at Smiley's
the proud owner showing off his pits, where the meat is smoked over wood. No gas, no electric. Wood.

skins
Yes, they are what you think they are, and they were great!

Now that's art!
The walls at Smiley's are adorned with paintings of a backwoods still.

Hmmm...
We skipped this one.

Orangeburg, South Carolina
Shealey's is famous for its BBQ buffet

a bench at Shealey's

I love everything at Shealey's
even the sign. The only setback is how many miles it is from Montreal.

the Rules
Don't screw around at Shealey's

Collard greens & ribs
These ribs were serious fall off the bone, and basted with the mustard-based BBQ sauce

Vinegar & Pepper BBQ
Great stuff, but we're here for the mustard BBQ, brought over by e Germans hundreds of years ago.

The mustard BBQ
South Carolina is the only state with all 3 BBQs - tomato-based, vinegar&pepper, and mustard.

Sweet Tea
All BBQ joints serve Sweet Tea - A nice lady walks around refilling your cup when you need more.

Dessert at Shealey's
Banana pudding

scrumptious

Of course I bought some
I got the vinegar&pepper and mustard sauces (I already know the tomato-based sauce.)

a tell-tale sign
some wood

inside
stae of the art, but they still use wood...I think. . .

Out back
the smoke comes out there, but it was end of day. . .

Batesburg-Leesville > Orangeburg
Of course, Orangeburg BBQ is is mostly open on Thu-Fri-Sat.. .so the hunt is on again!

Sonny's Real Pit BBQ
a chain that I usually avoid, but will do in a pinch.

Maurice's BBQ
Open, but not very good. Maurice is famous for his crazy politics, not his food.

You can see the smoke a block away, and smell it from the parking lot.
