Spectrum School has served the Rockford area since 1967, offering a genuine alternative to traditional education. As a pioneer in the area of educational change, we are dedicated to staying current on, and employing, the cutting-edge instructional methods proven through research. At Spectrum, we believe all children are unique. We believe every child learns in a different way and every child has undiscovered gifts, talents, and potential. No matter what their background, the desire to learn is the common bond they share.
Spectrum currently enrolls students from preschool through high school. Our 12 to 1 student to teacher ratio, multi-age classrooms, and the most sophisticated multiple intelligences learning program in the region allows us to understand the needs and strengths of each child. Spectrum views learning as a lifelong adventure that will help students succeed, no matter what opportunities and challenges they encounter.

Explore the Spectrum Experience!
“...mindful, self-directed learners for life.”
The purpose of Spectrum School is to provide an educational experience based on the learning theories of Jean Piaget, John Dewey and the multiple intelligences theory of Howard Gardner. Students participate in an integrated fine arts and academic program with a major emphasis on active learning – learning to think, solve problems and rationally assess their acts in school for today, and throughout life. Spectrum School supports the development and implementation of a model for life-long learning which embraces the diversity of the entire community.
Learning is a life-long process. Learning makes it possible for each person to achieve full potential at every stage in life. The learning styles, personal interests and talents of each individual must be acknowledged, honored, guided and strengthened. Learning happens best when individuals are provided with hands-on experiences which encourage observing, questioning and problem solving. Learning cooperative decision-making and conflict resolution, as well as learning how to learn, are essential for future success.
Pre-Elementary students brought in wheel toys to pedal, push or pull in a parade. Rain didn't stop this festive "Wheel" Parade. After decorating their wheel toys, the students pedaled around the school.
