We worked with a running martingale for the first time and it went GREAT!  He had it figured out within minutes and he got some of the best canter he's ever done with them.  It really helped things click for him.  I think a few rides in them and he won't need them anymore to help him figure out how to hold himself to work the best.  We were working with other horses in the arena and he did great.  Beau was lunging at the canter beside us and Marigold was loping around bareback with her 4Hers and he listened to me and we were able to school no problem!  More details on his blog!

We worked on three things, no wait FOUR things yesterday.  Annie gave a lunge-line riding lesson on Spots to a 12 yr old beginner rider boy.  They did walk/jog and it was awesome.  He was so good!  Then I got on him and did a curb-bit session and that is coming along.  Not there yet, but a good start.  Next, I put the snaffle bridle back on and we working on cantering.  I cantered a lot, we worked on being quicker on cue, taking the correct lead, and maintaining the gait.  After a rest break, we worked on loading in a 2-horse straight load and he was leading easily within 10 minutes!  I was quite pleased.  Visit his blog for a more detailed account of the day!

On Saturday we did Spots first trail ride.  He was great!  We even got him in the lake. He was alert and listened to me.  He didn't spook at anything even though we saw bikes, a dog, and people.  I have a detailed account on the blog.

Spots is going so nicely under-saddle.  I can ride him walk/trot/canter in western or English tack with no worries.  He is easy to work with, wants to please, and is happy to see you coming with a halter.  I look forward to our Dressage show in June.

Walk/Jog 18 & Over.  He rode through the alfalfa field, cantered down a gravel lane, met a mini-pony pulling a cart and spent quite a while sniffing it all over, then rode around the alfalfa field till it was completely dark except for the lightning in the sky.  It's been quite the month!

Spotless returned from the trainer unfinished and a bit spooky, and since I'd just had a baby I let him chill for a while.  This spring I restarted his ground-work and a friend of mine taught him to ground-drive way better than I had.  She took him on a walk around the block, across the fields, by the cows nearby.

Spotless has been at the trainers for a few weeks, but has only had 12 sessions so far because of the trainer's other job keeping him busy.  He had about 3 ground-sessions and the rest have been rides, so he'll have around 27 rides when he comes home!

Spotless arrived at the trainer's Friday, so will be under-saddle soon!  While he is there he is off the market, but you can stay updated on his progress here and he will be available again when he returns!

Last weekend we attended a trail play-day and Spotless go to walk through all the obstacles!  He did awesome!  The video is now below!

Spot Me Some Color - 1st Trail Course Experience

Spot Me Some Color is a 2007 aphc gelding. He is half TB and has normal papers as he has mottled skin. He has been awesome to work with and I can't wait to see what he is like under-saddle. This video shows him Feb. 28, 2010 as a nearing 3 yr old. He is not yet under-saddle at this point. I am leading him through obstacles at an indoor trail course play-day. In this video I am 7 months pregnant. He was a very good boy. He was scared sometimes, but takes everything in stride. I think my favorite part is where he is standing next to the black swinging bag, chilling, and a trainer's horse in the back ground is flipping out. That horse did everything else there, but the black bag was just TOO scary. Spotless did everything, including the water box, though I didn't end up with video of it. Spotless will be for sale after he returns from the trainer in April. He will be walk/trot/canter and in Dressage training at that time and will continue in training until sold. Spot Me Some Color - ApHC Yearling Jumping Free

Spotless is the son of an Appy mare by Etch To Impress and a Thoroughbred stallion by Wise Times. He is a yearling this summer (2008) and loves to play in his paddock jumping over his feed tub. I turned him out to play in the arena and he went straight for the jumps! I put the bar on the base of the standards so it was about 4 inches off the ground. We cracked a lunge whip to get him moving and he jumped them both twice before I got the video camera on. Eventually I put one end of each jump pole in the first jump cup and he jumped that too. Spotless (who actually HAS a spot) is intended to be my Dressage horse, but he seems to have other ideas. I'm hoping he will become as passionate about Dressage as he is now about jumping. NOTE: Do NOT put your young horse over frequent or high jumps. Allowing them to play over small jumps once in a while will help strengthen joints and bones, but over doing it will cause damage that will drastically reduce the horse's useful life. I believe a horse should not be ridden over jumps that require an actual jump, and not a trot over, until the horse is 4 yrs old. Please use common sense when training your baby and riding your young horse and you will have a companion that is still sound and rideable at 30 yrs old.

Spot Me Some Color is an Appaloosa/TB cross. In this video he is right about 3 months old. He isn't weaned yet and was not pleased when we pulled mama out for her daily grooming. Then, it was his turn to come out and be groomed and he stood quietly, even for his first experience with the hose!
