This weekend I was again reminded of the power of the water. As I watched a river destroy a city that I love, I was simply heartbroken. To see the Grand Ole Opry under water, the Country Music Hall of Fame covered in 6ft of flood water, Opry Mills, oh how I love Opry Mills...buildings and vehicles floating on currents like we would see sticks or leaves floating on normal a day.
This is not the first time I've been amazed by the power of water. Five months after Hurricane Katrina I was part of a mission team that visited the Biloxi, Mississippi area. As we drove through Biloxi and Bay St. Louis I was in awe. It was horribly amazing. I saw a casino boat that had been lifted and sat atop a hotel, a multiple story hotel. I saw a water tower that had simply been thrown from it's base several hundred yards away. I saw foundations where multi-million dollar ocean view homes were now replaced with FEMA trailers.
Then I think of how I feel sitting by a rolling creek, reading by the ocean, or floating a lake in my kayak.
Water is so peaceful and so powerful. Water is so cleansing and so destructive.
We use water as the symbol of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit can sweep through a city and destroy the darkness in it's path. Sometimes He destroys the things we hold dear because the will of the Father is beyond our understanding. The Spirit will flood and carry away the junk and garbage that we often store in our heart. How often has the Spirit taken something so large in our lives and simply sat something bigger and better directly on top? Haven't we all had our house shaken by the Spirit and found ourselves rebuilding on a simple foundation?
The Holy Spirit is so peaceful and so powerful. The Holy Spirit is so cleansing and so destructive.
My prayer for you today is that the Holy Spirit would destroy those things in your life that are ready to be carried away by His power and He would leave you clean and at peace.

Hello everyone!!! Can you believe the season of Lent has arrived? It seems time has picked up speed, I'm pretty sure each day is down to 22 hours now! It seems we live our lives that way sometimes. As this Lenten season begins and I start doing some things that remind me of the sacrifice that Christ made and ultimately why I'm on this crazy earth...I'm reminded to enjoy the little moments. There is no need to rush from day to day. It always seems we are working for "next weekend" or "vacation" or "the summer" etc.....
Let's live in the now. God's made provision for tomorrow, don't forget to enjoy today!
This Sunday during the 10 am worship service our children will learn the value of God's word! I hope to see all your kiddos this week. We had a blast learning what Lent means and "burrying our alleluias" last Sunday!
Philippians 4:11-13
11I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
The holiday season was wonderful and time with family was priceless. I am always reminded during the season of how blessed I really am. But oh how quickly things change. Soon after Christmas, I found myself in a funk (a very theological term). The funny thing about a funk, it can come out of nowhere and for no good reason. I confess, this one was a tough one. And when you find yourself in a funk it is so easy to see the funk all around you. The old saying misery loves company couldn't ring more true than it does in a funk. As the new year began it was my goal to force myself out of the dreaded place that I found myself but no matter how many resolutions I toyed with in my mind the feeling could not be shaken. Until...
It is so funny when I find myself "in need" God has a way of reminding that I "have plenty." There are orphanages full in China, there is genocide in Darfur, there are hudreds of thousands who are homeless in Haiti, the hallways of SSUMC are full of people from my own community in need of food. Thank God the Apostle Paul didn't keep the secret to himself, I can snap out of the funk through him who gives me strength. I have been given more than I could ask for through the grace of Jesus Christ.
The next time you find yourself in a funk, whether it be provoked or out of the blue, you can snap out of it. Christ empowers and strengthens us with the ability to be content in any situation. I once heard it said that possibly the #1 sin among Christians in discontent. I know I'm guilty!
My prayer is that the secret remain in the light. That each of us is empowered through the strength that Christ provides to be content. Whether we are fed or hungry, living with plenty or in want, may we be constantly reminded that we can do everything through the one and only who gives us strength.

12th - Toddler Time at Chuch E. Cheese from 1-3pm
19th - Fall Cupcake Decorating 3:30-5pm for 1st-3rd Graders (upstairs at the church)
22nd - Progressive Dinner 4-8pm for 4th-6th Graders (meet at the church)
29th - Hanging of the Greens 10am - we need all children there to participate in the decorating!
Also, mark your calendar...December 19th is the Christmas Fair!!!

The Renewal was such an amazing event for the life of our church. I hope that you all walked away from those services refreshed, renewed, and with a greater love and appreciation for our church family. I know that I did!

Hello everyone! This week we explored the crop circles at Chaney's Dairy barn. I am happy to report that we did not lose anyone to alien abduction although there was some concern for a few minutes. An adult was lost in the circles but finally emerged unharmed! Names have been ommitted in case of future information that the missing was indeed visited by a lifeform other than our own.
The upcoming weeks hold many great opportunities for SSKids
Sept 20-22: Durning the Renewal Services there will be special worship opportunities for the children upstairs each night, including the band Fifth Year!!
Oct 7: There will be no WNG due to Fall Break!
Oct 18: It's Family Fun Day at Jackson's Orchard from 3-5. Your family can have a fall portrait taken!!
Oct 28: Harvest Festival!!!! 5:30 in the Fellowship Hall
Oct 31: Trunk or Treat!!!! Begins at 5pm

Where did the summer go? I don't know what it was like for you but I feel like it was just last week that the kiddos were getting out of school and I was preparing for VBS! I blinked and July was gone!
I think that is such a great model for how our lives work much of the time. I'm reminded that I need to slow down, take a breath, and enjoy the life that is all around. Sometimes getting a routine helps that for me and I feel like my summer had no routine at all!
I pray that as we get back into our routines for the fall that I will see you all at WNG and Sunday School! Our Sunday School teachers have worked so hard this summer to focus on the spiritual growth needs of your children. Sunday is the primary education time at SSUMC and I encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful teachers that we do have! Wednesday Night Gathering is set up as a supplement to that main education time. WNG is designed to be a little more activity focused. We understand that your child has already had a long day at school and we want WNG to be a time of fun while still focusing on who God would have us all be! And, of course, time to learn some great music!

Hello everyone...I know recently I created a blog at blogspot.com so that we can share an ongoing conversation together but I found there was not a sufficient way for us to share pics as well. After VBS I realized that we need a way to share pics with each other so I found a way! When I created the shutterfly share album I realized it can be both a blog and a photo share! So instead of having two websites to keep up with we've merged! You can make a shutterfly account and you can add your own pics to this blog! I think it's great and I can't wait to see what you guys have! Please feel free to add older pics as well, you can add them to the albums I already have created or you can create your own album.
