Some squares are on their third planting this year. The frame across the top was to protect the bed with plastic during winter.
I also tried using this bed as a tabletop cold frame, but the results were disappointing.

experimenting growing on the bottom floor

100_1258_800x600.jpg
Experimenting with heat tape. Thermostat turns on and off at 73 degrees. Dirt temperature hasn't dropped below 64 degrees even during overnight temps in the low forties. Plastic box on the ground is a watt meter. Over the past 7 weeks I've used about 1 kilowatt per day. For me that's about 8 cents per day. I'm going to try extending the growing season this fall, and get an earlier start next spring.

$5 for a headboard and footboard at a garage sale. Welded together they make a trellis for beans. Beets are planted on the out edges of the boxes.

The framed glass are the tops to my cold frames. Barrels are for passive heat for tomatos.

100_1271_800x600.jpg
We get way too many green tomatoes and not enough red. This is an experiment to see if passive heat being released into the early night will help. The plant in the middle is ahead of the plants on top of the barrels. The plant on the ground and the plant on the right barrel are sitting in $500 planters each. They were very slightly damaged wheels off a BMW.

100_1274_800x600.jpg
One of my favorite garden features. Used for veggie prep-especially hand because I'm partial to root crops.

100_1276_800x600.jpg
Hard to see, but cinder block holes have beets growing in them.
