St. Matthew's Anglican Church - Mission to India
our Appalachia Deanery is directly supporting our new Anglican Diocese of Kadapa, India, which is currently composed of eleven congregations of Dalits ("untouchables" in the caste system of India). Our mission partner is St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Moragudi. The Deacon there is the Rev. G. Dyvasirvadam; he will be made a priest within the next year. His wife and he have three young children. The congregation has 173 members (51 men, 60 women, 34 boys and 28 girls). The congregation has a Church building and site.
Over the next two months, I am asking you to join with me in raising no less than one thousand dollars for the Moragudi mission in helping them to become self-sufficient.
The Great Commisson
Good People,
For me, the Great Commission ("Go and make disciples of all nations..." - Jesus' last words in the Gospel of St. Matthew) is not an option but a commandment from King Jesus.
As you may know, our Appalachia Deanery is directly supporting our new Anglican Diocese of Kadapa, India, which is currently composed of eleven congregations of Dalits ("untouchables" in the caste system of India).
Over the next two months, I am asking you to join with me in raising no less than one thousand dollars for the Moragudi mission to be used as follows:
1. $420 to cover the cost of the stipend of the Deacon there for 2011. He currently makes slightly less than $35 per month which is what most of the clergy in the new Diocese make.
2. $180 to cover the cost of the sexton there for 2011. He currently makes slightly less than $15 per month to maintain and clean the Church and the Church grounds.
3. $400 to purchase four sewing machines for four graduates of the Diocesan sewing center which would allow these women to establish four cottage based enterprises and become self-supporting.
Fr. Johann Vanderbijl, Bishop Grundorf and others will be spending two weeks next month in India visiting and assessing the work there. I have asked Fr. Johann to find out the answers to these four questions regarding our mission partner at Moragudi:
1. The cost of a teacher who would hold daily classes in the Church teaching English and basic math.
2. The need and cost of a potable hand crank water well to be located in the Church compound.
3. The need and cost of a midwife/nurse and a small medical clinic to be located in the Church compound.
4. The need and cost of a sewing training center in the Church compound.
The goals, as I see them, are: 1. Evangelism, 2. Education, 3. Health and 4. Economic self-sufficiency. If we do it right. That congregation will be spreading the Gospel even more effectively and also be self-supporting within three years.
I pray that you will join me in this venture. Make a check out to St. Matthew's and put "India Mission" in the note spot on the check.
Thanks,
Fr. John
