More Equipment and Commentary

This is it!  This is the thing we have been waiting for!  After 50 years we finally have the final building permit for our beautiful church.  It is now in our hands!  On Thursday, March 25^th, we will review the bids with our Architect and the General Contractor! Before we begin the construction, we will have  a few contracts to review and sign.  Monday, April 12, there is a meeting between TBI, inc., BC|A and our team from St. Archangel Michael to review the contract.  It will be brought to the Parish Stewards in for approval of Phases I and II. 

We have concluded the Design Development phase of our project.  BC|A and members of the Church Construciton Committee (Fr. Slobodan Jovic, Radmilo Bozinovic, Robert Medan, Robert Adzich, Bill Davidovich, Nenad Vukicevich and John Ivancovich) worked with TBI, a General Contractor, to accomplish this.  TBI helped us select building systems that are both more economical and enviornmentally sound.  This small building is intricate and complex.  Tony Mirenda of TBI equated it with a Jewel Box.  It will be a special treasure and a fitting gift to the Glory of God.

Serbian-Orthodox Churches in the USA

Until recently, the anathema toward religion in earlier communist ideology stopped religious building in Serbia. From the start of communist rule, Serbs in exile, especially in the , were in a better position to develop previously established church building traditions than indigenous communities.

Two quite different approaches appeared as possible answers to the question of appropriate forms for new churches. One approach suggested designs in the manner of Late Modernism. Although characterized by the unornamented vocabulary, this kind of building revealed an abstract, reduced reminiscence of medieval prototypes. Another approach rejected this international architectural language in favor of a stronger connection with Serbian medieval heritage. The most extreme example of such a glorification of an ethnic medieval legacy in is the church Gracanica in , built almost as an exact copy of Gracanica in Kosovo, one of the best examples of Serbian medieval architecture.

In recent years a demand for authentic expression in newly built churches has become synonymous with employing architectural prototypes considered essentially Serbian-Orthodox. This has forced architects to become copyists of strictly recommended features, assumed to be essential characteristics of Byzantine-Orthodox art. Since architectural canons, differently from painting, never existed in Byzantine art, their introduction during the course of the19th century has been especially important.

Although the building of Serbain-Orthodox churches in the has had a long tradition, more or less independent from the native country, recently built churches obviously show close links with the principles that have been established in . The creators of new Serbian-Orthodox churches in the , usually proud of their ancestors’ heritage that they try to reconstruct, are probably not conscious of the fact that they are also creating a part of American heritage.
