How to Make Pellets

Pellets are some of the greatest sources of relief to people who use them either as livestock food or as a source of heat. This is because they can easily be made in the backyard, and they serve the same purpose as the industrially produced materials that expensive to buy from time to time. To make pellet, you need a pellet mill. You therefore need the right kind of skills to operate it, especially if you are willing to buy one that can be used for large-scale production.

The initial process of making pellets starts with choosing the right kinds of materials; depending on what you intend to use the pellets for. If you need pellets for use in heating homes, you need to choose the right kind of biomass. Essentially, pellets that can be used for home heating can be made from hard wood or soft wood. Other materials include maize cobs, grass, straw and many more.

The basic thing that needs to be done before such material is put in a pelletizing machine is to break them in smaller particles. This will make the process easy. However, fine materials like saw dust co not require being broken any further. They are then mixed with a binder, if they doo not have the right amount of such substance. The ground material is then put in the pelletizing unit where they put under pressure. As such, cylindrical shaped pellets are formed.
Usually, when pellets are straight from the pellet mill, they are very hot. Therefore, they need to be allowed to cool before they are taken to the store. To make pellet with a pellet mill is one thing, but knowing how to store them is a completely different thing. This is because storing them in poor conditions can affect their quality. As such, one thing that must be avoided like a plague is storing them in a damp room.

Pellets that are for animal consumption will easily pick mould from such conditions, thus making them unfit for consumption. Others that are specifically for use as source of heat in homes will have third moisture content, and this will make then unusable. Another thing, which is very important, is that you should choose materials to make pellet based on the moisture content that you wish your pellets to have. Ideally, materials that have higher moisture content will produce pellets that have high moisture content too.

Taking good care of your pellet mill is very crucial, as this will ensure that it has given you service for a long time. Ensure that you have bought it with the operation manual, as this will guide you in fixing any minor problems that it may develop when in operation. If you are planning to buy a pellet mill to make pellet for commercial purposes, you need to buy a heavy-duty mill but this will come with extra expenses. This is because you will need a helping hand since you may need to keep the pellet mill running for 24 hours in day.
