Sean was able to take a picture of a nasty-looking cloud as it approached during a particularly scary storm. Next, it started hailing. We were in the basement for this one!
Abby's dance recital costume....waiting to go on stage!
A luna moth that Sean got a picture of. He was attached to our window screen. Check out the red eyes!
To close out May, my parents came up for my birthday. The kids really enjoyed seeing Grammy Connie and Papa Steve. Abby was stuck like glue to my mom! Poor lady couldn't even go to the restroom alone! Desi and Justin stopped by for dinner and then we went to a movie since we had babysitters! It was a late movie, so the kids were already asleep when we left. Not too bad for birthday #36! The bad thing is, my allergies decided to kick it into high gear!
While we had access to my parent's truck (Sean's is still not running), dad and I went to pick up Abby's big girl bed. She's needed one for a while, but we just haven't had the means to transport it. A couple of months ago, I got a Groupon for a local mattress store where I got $200 worth for $50! I thought that was an exceptional deal! And Abby loves her big girl bed. Since her old bed is a lifetime crib, we moved it into TJ's room. So, we've got a shuffle going on trying to clean everything up.
Mom and dad brought some really warm weather with them, too! IT got up into the 90's over the holiday weekend. I got the kids a sprinker, which Abby loves. But TJ doesn't like the grass at all! Oh well!
My parents went home on Sunday. Thankfully, I was able to take Monday off because it was a busy, busy week! I went to Abby's parent teacher conference on Tuesday. She's doing well in her school work. The only thing that the teacher said was that she can be bossy sometimes. Wonder where she gets that?!?!?! So, we will be working on that.
Then Wednesday night we had the dress rehearsal for Abby's dance recital. Wow! This is the first time I've done anything like this. I didn't take dance when I was younger, but I did a lot of musical, show choir type stuff in high school. There were tons of kids!!! But they did really well! I was not as prepared as I shouold have been, but I left from work and was lucky to have all of her costume with us! So, I did get some video. Now, I just need to figure out how to get it uploaded. As soon as I get that done, I will post it.
Thursday was TJ's eye apt. I had an off-site for work, so Sean had to take him. this was the first time I had not been with him. I was a little sad. But Sean said he did great! They had to dialate his eyes on this trip. They did a 3-D test, which he passed. The Dr. said that his vision was fine. It didn't look like he would even need glasses. So, he has Horner's Syndrome, we don't know why, but it doesn't look like it affects him much. YAY! This was also the last time we would get to see Dr. Bonsall. He's moving to WV to another hospital. But they told Sean that his replacement is from DC and that she has even more experience. That's great and all, but I have totally gotten used to Dr. Bonsall and will miss him terribly. Children's is a great hospital. But hope you never need to find that out!!!!! (Ironically, the off-site meeting I had was at a local plastics plant that was giving a tour to Children's hospital due to having 8 years without a loss-time accident. Children's wanted to find out how they managed that. It was amazing to be sitting in a room with surgeons, VP's, research analysts, etc. who are working to make their hospital a safer place for their employees and patients. It was very surreal. We were there for the same reason, but on a much, much smaller scale. But we were lucky to get to be allowed to meet at the same time with them.)
And finally, Abby had her very first dance recital today. They did great! I got a few pictures. The place was packed!!!! Every seat in the high school auditorium was filled. The school was up on the other side of Cincy, and since we didn't have a babysitter, Sean didn't go. It would have just been topo much for TJ. So again, the guys got to hang out without us. Next up- packing for CA!!!! When we return, TJ will start school with Abby at Goddard. I am going to miss Mrs. Kelly, but I really think it is time for TJ to move on. Oh summer! Here we come! (Also, Abby is old enough now to go on actual field trips. SO, this summer she will be getting to ride a real school bus and go on field trips! I am going to go with her on a few. how exciting!)
Although May is not over, I thought I would get started on this post early. May has seen the weather warm up, but we still have weeks and weeks of what seems like unending RAIN!!!
We've been spending time at the park, on the back deck, and generally being a family. Abby is learning to tie her shoes. She also wanted to try curly hair, so I got some of those old-timey foam rollers. They worked, but the curl didn't last too long. TJ is eating really well with a fork. He even went potty on th ebig boy potty last weekend, although I think it was just a fluke. Abby had her first dance recital rehearsal (with another rehearsal in a week, and the performance in June). We had Zoo night last weekend (a gift from my work). Abby and TJ both did so well. TJ loves the train, of course! And they both got to ride the carousel. TJ was too little last time. Abby tried to sleep oout in the tent on the back deck with daddy that night, but they came in because the frogs were too loud. So, we tried it again this weekend. Success! Abby loves "camping". I got them a small play camping pop-up "tent" with accessories (lamp, cook stove, flask) at Costco yesterday. This way, TJ can play "camping" as well! (Too cute, and great price at $25, I might add.)
While Abby and I were at her recital rehearsal, TJ and daddy had some quality man time. TJ helped Sean with his project of beer making. Don't worry- he's just trying to build a mash ton (sp?) and TJ helped.
We also got to see some old friends last weekend at Tommy's graduation party. (Congrats, Tommy!) Dick Thompson is one of our old Gap buddies who we haven't seen since our wedding. He came up from Nashville for the party with his wife and two kids who are around our kids ages. It was wonderful to see them again!
Today, the kids and I went to the butterfly show at Krohn Conservatory. It was a BEAUTIFUL day for it! The sun was shining, slight breeze, and not too hot. Both kids did really well and seemed to enjoy it! TJ is always the trooper since he was kinda stuck in the stroller the whole time- but no complaints! This was a test for Abby since she has been a bit of a challenge here lately. I am hoping it is the age. Or maybe she's picking up "attitude" from her friends at school. Whatever it is, it needs to end! So, I let her know that our trip to the butterfly show today was test, and if she didn't pass it, then we would have to re-evaluate our trip to Disney next month. Needless to say, she was an angel!
And yes, we are gearing up for our trip to CA next month! I need to start a packing list. I got each kid their own backpack for the plane ride, so they can have some of their own stuff with them. This will be interesting....more to come!
I am so lucky! For all the reasons that are typical as well as all those little things that you take for granted. My family loves me, and although we don't always show it or say it enough, I know it!
Sean gave me flowers and a basket of "home spa" goodies on Saturday. On Sunday, the kids gave me a Cat in the Hat game so we could spend some quality time together. It was a blast!
April seemed to go by so fast! We were so glad that the weather started to warm up, but most of April was rainy. We have been spending a lot more time out on the deck.
Abby had a very fun birthday party in April. It was a tea party. I had no idea that there were companies that will come into your home, bring the food, tea sets/place settings, a craft, and all the accessories. It was a blast!
I had to work for a little on Easter, but it wasn't too bad. The kids dyed some eggs, and they both had baskets on Easter morning.
March, 2011
Wow. March is a busy month. First, Sean’s birthday. Then Chris, his brother’s birthday. Then Abby’s birthday. Then Megan’s birthday!
Sean was sick for his birthday. He had been sick the entire week before. Poor guy. We got him a bin full of gardening stuff, including a “grow your own Sequoia!” He also got a book about Lincoln, Ken Burn’s PBS documentary on the Civil War, and several volumes of Shelby Foote’s books about the Civil War. (We spent several nights watching the documentary…amazing! Just amazing!)
TJ has been growing like a weed. He’s taller and leaner now. He throws a ball really well and can climb up on the couch (or really anything). We moved him into a booster seat instead of the high chair. We brought our coffee table back in, but took it back out after two really bad falls into it. (Poor kid is bruised up. Should have known that boys were more danger-prone!) He’s talking a lot more now, too. He likes to sing and dance. And generally as long as he has been fed, he is happy. But watch out! If he gets hungry- you need to feed him!
Abby turned four on Friday, 3/18. I had gotten her a butterfly balloon Thursday night along with a special birthday plate (again, a yearly ritual) which she saw first thing Friday morning. We had a special crabby patty (aka cheeseburger) that night for dinner and opened all of the family presents. Wow! The next morning we had her party at a local inflatables place. We invited all of the kids in her class as well as lots of our friends. There were 18 kids that came. Everyone seemed to have a BLAST! But I was a little shocked at the number of gifts. We actually ran out of time to open them and had to take them home with us after eating pizza and cupcakes (which stained all of their faces/mouths). Abby and TJ passed out, then we got to open her gifts. I am still amazed! (We have several gifts put up in the top of her closet unwrapped, but unopened. We may get them out on a rainy day or for a special treat! Wow.)
Also, we are planning to get Abby a “big girl bed.” Pictures will surely be posted when we do!
(And we’ve had lots of fish deaths in the last month…four, actually.)
And more travel for Sean. This time, he had to go to Canada. That was a rough week for me. Work was a pain in my behind…and we had the kids check-ups. I was amazed that Abby got FIVE shots! TJ only had one- his last until he turns 4. Her poor arms are all red and hurt. (And she won’t let me take the band aids off!!)
Stats for TJ: 32 ¾ inches tall (85%) and 29 lbs (85%)
Stats for Abby: 40 inches tall (50%) and 35.5 lbs (55-60%)
February, 2011
February was pretty laid back. Sick kids, ear infections, sick mommy, some more snow. But there was Valentine’s Day!!!! Abby had her Valentine’s party for school which they have a local senior center. There is a DJ (Sean’s boss, actually), and lots of dancing!! Abby loves this party. So, of course we went! And we had a new red dress to wear to it (which I got at a consignment store for $8.00!). Abby got a valentine from her friend Tarek. He is super sweet. And they all danced until they almost passed out. We even danced with Bob, the DJ. Abby now refers to him as daddy’s Bob.
TJ had another eye appointment. Things still seem fine. We need to go back in June. Bad thing is our eye doctor is taking a director position at another hospital in another state. He’s leaving us!!!!! I am so sad about this. You get used to someone, ya know!
And more travel for Sean. (Luckily this trip is to Gallatin, so he got to see my folks. Love this man! He went to see MY folks without me! How sweet!)
And I got Abby’s birthday party location booked…..my how time is flying!
January, 2011
New Year’s was simple. We watched the parade. TJ wasn’t really paying attention, but when the Cal Poly float went by he started cheering and waving his arms. Guess he likes it!
January weather is unpredictable! I don’t like snow, but I hate (and I do mean HATE) ice. We got a little “dusting” one Friday afternoon that turned to ice when it hit the pavement. I didn’t realize what was going on until I left work. So, there were tons of wrecks and crazy near-misses. But a normally 30 minute commute home ended up taking about 3 hrs. With a cranky, hungry TJ in the back seat who had lost his binky within the first 10 minutes! AAARRGHH! But we made it home ok. Thankfully!
Back in September I signed up to take the GRE to get into grad school. Well, to be honest, I had forgotten all about it between work, the holidays, and just living. So, when I realized the test date had arrived, I had done absolutely no prep for it. The cost of the test was about $165, and I didn’t want to waste it. So, I went anyway. With no test prep. It was harder than I would have liked, but not too bad. I did fairly well considering. I think I hit the average on the nose. Enough to get me in, I think. Whoo hoo!!!
And Sean has started travelling for work again. Why does it have to snow 6 inches while he’s gone? Why?
And my little Abby is lucky enough to have lots of great friends at school. So, we get to go to lots of birthday parties! This month, was Sofia’s birthday. It was at Silverlake, a gym/pool/family place with bounce houses and swimming! Abby was in the water all by herself. I didn’t plan on getting in around a lot of people I didn’t know. Plus, none of the other parents got in. But I was impressed with her for getting in without me. Growing up so fast!
December, 2010
Usually December is one of my favorite months. I have always loved Christmas- the music, shopping, putting up the tree. But this year was really hard for me. I had gotten spoiled last year when I was unemployed. I mean, I am thankful that I have a job that I enjoy. But I really missed spending all that time with the kids- singing and dancing to Christmas music, making treats and gifts, and doing all the fun stuff like that. It was difficult trying to fit in all the things I wanted to do in the amount of time that I had, which was usually just one weekend day a week!
However, we did get to do some fun things in December:
· Museum Center-trains, trains, trains! Abby got to ride the train about 5 times! Loved it! TJ enjoyed it, too. Justin and Desi came out to help. And….Abby got her picture taken with a REAL ballerina!! From the Nutcracker!!! We also went thru the cave section which Abby really enjoyed. (She went thru twice.)
· Goddard Christmas Party- Abby got her picture taken with Santa and Mrs. Clause.
· Cincinnati Zoo’s Festival of Lights- cold night, grouchy kids. Oh well.
· Nutcracker ballet- this has become a ritual for us. Abby did really well. She was a little more prepared for it this time. It was a mommy/daughter day! She was really interested in the orchestra. Our seats were amazing! 5 rows back from the orchestra pit. After the ballet was over, we had lunch and went to the aquarium. Perfect time to go…no one was there! We had our picture made with scuba Santa!
Christmas itself was nice and uneventful! My parents came up with Alex. Desi and Justin came over on Christmas eve and we opened family presents. Everyone seemed to enjoy their gifts. We opened up Santa’s presents on Christmas morning after breakfast. It is nice that Abby is still patient enough to wait on us. The kids got tons of wonderful gifts. We are so very blessed.
November, 2010 (Part Two)
Once we got over the emotional rollercoaster of the MRI, it was almost time for Thanksgiving!
In the meantime, things had really picked up at work. We were trying to get ready for our first peak holiday season. So, that meant lots of overtime. I hate working so much during such a wonderful time of year, but alas, since I am the Training Coordinator, not much can be done about that. However, I am grateful that I didn’t have to put in the hours that the rest of the supervisors did- they worked six 12 hour days! Ouch!
The night before Thanksgiving, mom and dad drove up from TN. On Thanksgiving day, Justin and Desi came over. We had a BLAST! It was such a relaxing and enjoyable day!
Also, at some point TJ began walking. He had been “cruising” for a while, but started walking pretty well in November. The bad part is that I didn’t document any of it. I don’t remember what day, or anything! How sad is that!?!?!? I hope he doesn’t ever ask!
November, 2010 (Part One)
November was full of emotion for us. TJ has been going to the ophthalmologist since he was 3 months old. We had another regularly scheduled eye apt. When we this time, the doctor decided we should do another test to either confirm or deny that TJ has Horner’s Syndrome. So, we went to Cincinnati Children’s to have cocaine eye drops placed in his eyes. The receptors in your brain respond differently to the chemical in cocaine. Those drops were really crazy difficult to get. They had to special order them. And they wouldn’t make them until we actually got there. The doctor joked that he could have gotten it easier and faster if he had just gone down to the corner. Hahahaha. He’s a really good doctor. I totally trust him. Well, the results were not what I expected. I thought that his eyes would respond. But nope. The one eye responded almost immediately. But the other eye, his left eye, did not change at all. Which means he has Horner’s. So, the doctor suggested an MRI to rule out any neurological issues. So, they were really quick in scheduling the MRI. We went in on Saturday, November 13th, just 3 days later. It was early. Really early. Thankfully, Justin and Desi spent the night so that we wouldn’t have to get Abby up. The hard part was TJ couldn’t have anything to eat or drink that morning. By the time we got to Children’s he was a little cranky. The details of that morning are kinda blurry now. I just remember how helpless I felt. (And also thankful that our family was not touched by some of the horrible things that some of the children at the hospital were there for.) They gave TJ some gas to put him out. Sean was holding him. I have only seen my husband cry twice. This was the second. SCARY! TJ just went limp. I will say that the doctors and nurses were absolutely wonderful! Excellent! At that point, we left to go to the waiting area. The MRI took about an hour and half. When we were finally called back, he was in the recovery room. That was scary, too! He was pale and still. And you could tell that he was cold. They brought him out and he woke up with no problem. They gave him graham crackers and water. We had no idea that he would like the crackers so much! He was still a little groggy, but OK. (And flirting with the nurses!) He didn’t even flinch when they took the IV out!!! They told us to keep him quiet and still for the rest of the day. Yeah, right! By the time we got home, he was back to his normal self. He acted as though nothing had happened. Sean and I were exhausted, but grateful. They wouldn’t have the MRI reading done until Monday or Tuesday, so we had to wait. That was not fun, but we were sure that nothing was wrong. I called on Monday, and they gave the results: nothing out of the normal. No masses. No cancer. Relief.
October 2010
Well, October was loads of fun! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. And fall is just beautiful. Since our summer and fall was unusually hot and dry, the leaves didn’t turn beautiful colors like they did the year before. But it was still a beautiful time. We were able to do lots of fun stuff even though I was working crazy hours. (Trying to get a start-up retail-oriented operation ready for Christmas season with employees who have only been working for a few weeks…..crazy for the training coordinator- ME!)
First of all, Abby got to go to her first high school football game. I haven’t been to one in years! TJ stayed home with daddy since he wasn’t feeling too good. It was the perfect football weather, too! Crisp and clear! We didn’t stay for the whole game. We made the mistake of sitting in the area next to where the band sits. LOUD! But Abby was very interested in the instruments. And somehow, she never even noticed the cheerleaders. She didn’t really “watch” the game, but she seemed to enjoy it. Maybe it was because Aunt Desi and Uncle Justin were there?!?!? She just loves those two tons!
Next up: Hall-zoo-ween! We took advantage of the warm fall weather and made a trip to the zoo. Unfortunately, so did everyone else. And I didn’t realize that it was costume day, so there were lots of kids there in costume. Abby really enjoyed the bears eating a pumpkin!
And you can’t forget the pumpkin patch/petting zoo/hayride! Desi and Justin went with us and stayed for dinner, too! We made the mistake of going rather late. It was almost closing time. But we still got to pet lots of goats and sheep, take a hayride, and pick out a pumpkin! TJ seemed to really like the animals. As a side note- uncle Justin got him a plastic machete and raccoon skin cap, so there were some Kodak moments before the excursion. (The hat was more of gag gift for Sean since we have had lots of problems with raccoons eating our dog food. Sean had to buy and modify a deck box to keep the dog food in. Those things are waaayyy smarter than we give them credit for. We practically had to lock it!)
Abby was rather indecisive regarding what she wanted to be for Halloween. First, it was Indiana Jones, then it was Harry Potter, then a princess…. So, she was a princess with crown and all for the trick-or-treating at a local shopping area. Then on Halloween night, she was Hermione. We carved pumpkins Halloween night as well. Sean is a master carver. Abby wasn’t too interested, but TJ sure was! He liked digging into it and pulling the “guts” out. TJ and Sean dressed alike for Halloween. They both had red flannel shirts on. I guess you could say that they were rednecks. They handed out candy while Abby and I went trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. We just went up to a few houses. Most people sit out in their driveways with fire pits which makes it really nice. By dark, most trick-or-treaters had left. I don’t think we actually had anyone stop by after we went inside. All-in-all, it was a really cool Halloween! Next year should be interesting since both will probably be going….
Today is January 20, 2011 and a snow day. So, I am taking this opportunity to catch up on my blogging. Well, to my utter shock, it has been five months since my last post! What?!?!? Where did the time go? Since I have so much to catch up on, I will try to do this in smaller sections by month or event.
Aug/Sept 2010
Sean’s parent drove out to see us at the end of August. It was wonderful to see them, but I had to work pretty much the whole time! But it was a great to see them with the kids. Abby just loves her Grammy and Pop Pop! They were here for Pop Pop’s birthday, so we went to Mitchell’s and had some wonderful food! Sean and the kids got to go to Jungle Jim’s and Costco to prepare for TJ’s birthday party.
We had TJ’s birthday party on the 4th. My parents and brother, Alex, came up from TN, Desi and Justin, our favorite babysitter, Erin, as well as our friends Amy and Tommy and their kids Jack and Caroline were there. It was a simple party with hot dogs and chips. I made TJ his own personal-sized cake like I did for Abby. But TJ got a white cake with real frosting instead of the made from scratch carrot cake that Abby got. I simply ran out of time! But I did buy a star-shaped cake pan which was kinda cool. One of our dear friends let us borrow her bounce house which filled our entire front yard! The kids loved it! TJ was really interested in his cake and tried to eat it like a hamburger. But it was just too big, and it broke. By 6pm he was passed out on the living room floor. Poor guy! But it was a wonderful party with lots of love and friends! His actual birthday fell on Labor Day, which I took from work. He opened most of his presents that morning. It was interesting trying to keep Abby from opening them. She didn’t quite understand that they weren’t for her.
Unfortunately, Grammy and Pop Pop had to go home. They had been away for several weeks. And we all know that nothing is quite like your own bed! We hated to see them go, but understood that they were ready to be home.
The remainder of September was still fun. Abby and Daddy went camping in the big tent out in the back yard. Sean made a camp fire, roasted marshmallows, and everything! They stayed out there all night! I was so proud of Abby! Sean had inflated the two twin mattresses, so it wasn’t too rough. (But if you ask him, it was still pretty bad.) The next morning, Sean made campfire coffee and hot chocolate for Abby. He made eggs and bacon as well! Sean said that he didn’t sleep all that well. He could hear all the wild animals walking through the area. But he said that Abby did really well. Again, so proud! She’s growing up too fast.
Life for us shifted into high gear a few weeks ago....I went back to work full time. It happened so quickly that I didn't have time to worry about it. We have since been working out the kinks and getting into a routine. My new position is Training Coordinator for HK Logistics. We are a sort facility for Amazon. It is a new operation that started back in May. So, I have been very busy at work. I went from working zero hours outside the home to 55-60 a week. It has been an adjustment to say the least. The biggest adjustment was for TJ who hasn't known any other caregiver than Sean and I. So, the first few weeks have been harder on him. But by the end of week three he seemed to have gotten over any separation anxiety. Whew! However, I am still planning on going back to school in the spring. So, this may just be a short term solution.
But prior to me going back to work, we were still in full summer mode: swimming, playing in the sprinklers, Abby "camping out" in the tent with daddy on the back deck (all night I might add), trips to the library, picnics at the park, etc. I have to admit that I will and do miss all that time with my kiddos. But I am thankful for the opportunity that I got. I will also admit that I like my job a lot. (Not the hours so much, but hey.)
TJ is growing like a weed. He's just getting taller. Still in size 4 diapers since like 4 months old! He is pretty much eating table food. He LOVES sweet potato. He is almost ready to walk...almost. He loves his sister, and he loves to "chase" her around. Abby is very tolerant of him as well. (Most of the time, at least.) I am very blessed. VERY.
I cannot complain with boredom! We have been keeping fairly busy. We went to the Zoo with Amy, Jack, and Caroline Bowman. Abby really loves Jack! They did really well for such a hot, muggy day! The Zoo updated the kids section and has added quite a few more zoo keepers walking around with animals. I was totally impressed. Abby got to pet/touch a bird (can't remember type- just that it was black), feed an alpaca, touch a snake (I know!), and turtle (one of the zoo keepers was two steps behind all the kids with hand sanitizer...it was funny to watch him try to get each kid's hands clean after touching the turtle!)
We also went with the Bowman's on Friday to a local place called Jump Zone where they have 7 or so HUGE infatables to jump in or slide down. I had never been, but I guarantee we will be back. The price was kinda steep at $9/kid (no charge for babies or adults) since we just stayed maybe an hour and a half. But Abby, Jack, Caroline, and even TJ were able to have a fun time.
Yesterday we went to the pool with Justin and Desi since we haven't been in a while and Daddy was roofing for Habitat for Humanity (work-related). Abby and TJ both just love the water! Abby is so much more independent this year in the water. And TJ...well TJ is just my happy, go-with-the-flow guy! We had lunch and headed home for a nap. TJ slept for 3 hours! Wow! After Sean got a shower and a backrub (He and his co-workers hauled an entire pallet of shingles up to the roof before they could begin roofing! He's such a great guy!) we headed out to our local Florence Freedom ball park to watch a baseball game. (I was worried that Abby would be disappointed. She thought we were going to a football game. Looks like we will be spending some time this fall at some High School football games.) It was still hot, but there was a nice breeze. Abby was too excited to eat. But I think she really liked going. She really liked the big mascots! (I will have to upload those photos from my phone when I get a chance.) There is a playground area for the kids, lots of family-friendly activities, and food. We ended up leaving around 9:00 pm or so. Big day! Abby went right to sleep...with the little "Belle" doll that aunt Desi/unlce Justin got her. (Belle is one of the mascots...a pink eagle?)
Needless to say, we are taking it easy today. (Although I did mow the grass today since Sean is still a little sore from roofing. I have to admit...I haven't mowed our grass since before I found out I was pregnant with Abby. It has been a while! And I have the blisters to prove it! But I did it all with the push mower, not the riding mower. I just didn't want to stop once I started.)
Fuinger guard- The last time we took Abby to the dentist, he mentioned that we still have a little time to reverse the damage caused by Abby sucking on her fingers. I have tried so many things...bitter nail polish, treats/praise, candy/suckers/gum, pickle juice, lemon juice, bandages, mittens/gloves. Nothing seems to work. So, we broke down and got the silicone finger guard. (A gift from Grammy, but we won't tell Abby that.) I think we are on day #6. So far, it is working really well. I can tell a difference already. It is a "new" thing to Abby, so the first few days she asked for us to put it on. We don't send her to school in it, and she only went to bed with it on one night. She woke up around 12:30 crying for us to take it off. But she would rather not wear it. So it is a good deterrant (sp?). She knows that if I see her sucking on her fingers, I will put it on her. She even does really well in the car! I am so thankful! The makers said it takes about 4 weeks. Hoping that this continues to work as well as it has been!
In the world of me- I finally got my hair cut. It has been a couple of weeks now. I took a picture in with an example of how I wanted it cut, but they cut it waaaayyy shorter than the picture. It looks good, just shorter than I wanted. And I have bangs. Still getting used to it.
Also, I applied to Northern Kentucky University. I am hoping to get my Masters in Education/Teaching over the next few years. I won't be able to join that program until next fall, but that gives me time to take all the tests, get the letters of recommendation, take any pre-requisites, etc. I figure now is as good of a time as any. We'll see!
TJ is growing up so fast. He's turning into a little boy right in front of our eyes! Since my post back in June, he began crawling "properly" as well as pulling himself up and "cruising." He is so tall that we have to move things out of his reach now. He is still thinning out...just getting longer! He has tooth #6, and has been eating a lot more table food. I have to admit that I am a bit lazy when it comes to feeding him. He's been on the pre-made Gerber baby food for a while now. But I am working on feeding him a more diverse diet. One thing that we discovered that he really likes (no surprise) is ice cream. So now, if you come to the couch with a bowl, he will be right there with his mouth open for some! (Don't worry. We don't give him much.)
And I wanted to share one last story that I forgot to add in my last post: When we went to the Air Force Museum, there were a lot of exhibits that shouldn't be touched. And for those of you who know, Abby loves buttons. She just can't help herself! There were some touch screen computers in front of some of the exhibits where you can touch/select a certain aircraft and drill down to find out specific info regarding missions/etc. We knew that she would like that, but what we didn't know was how well she would navigate it. There were "NEXT" and "BACK" buttons on the bottom (with arrows pointing forward and back). She could touch a picture, move through several screens, and then get back to the begining. Sean and I kinda tested her by asking her to do it again while we watched....in awe I might add! She was quick and knew what she was doing and where she was going. Man! I feel OLD! I don't think I even touched a computer before 3rd grade when we got to play "Oregon Trail."
There were also a few planes that you could get into. I can't remember what type of plane it was (Sean would know). As soon as he put her into it, Abby drew her arms up to her chest and wouldn't touch anything. He said she was scared that she would actually make something happen! Eventually, he convinced her that it was ok, that she could touch the buttons! How funny is that?!?!?!
I don't even know where to begin! First of all, Sean's sister and her family came out for a visit. ALL THE WAY FROM COLORADO! We had such fun just hanging out. Abby liked having a
"big brother" for a while. (She was Ian's shadow most of the time.) We went to the Aquarium, Wright Patterson AF Museum in Dayton, took walks, went to the park, played in the pool, and had an all-around good time.
We also have had some not-so-good experiences with raccoons getting into the dog food. There were 6 out there one night! Those suckers are smart and mean!
Next up: planning TJ's first birthday!
We've just been enjoying the weather and having dad home more often. (He has to use his vaction by July or he looses it. So he has been taking days here and there.) We decided to have a picnic on the back deck a few Fridays ago. (Thanks to aunt Trudy for the picnic basket as a wedding present!! Abby LOVED it and all the dishes and blanket!!)
On the Thursday before, I had to take TJ to the doctor since he had a cold and pinkeye. The drops they gave worked wonders. But he still has an occasional cough. He never had a fever.
Abby woke up that Friday night (after the picnic) with a fever of 102 degrees. And it never really went down. We gave her the Motrin, then the Tylenol, lukewarm baths, lots of fluids, rest....I even called the pediatrician's office on Sat. morning and spoke w/ a nurse. (They close at noon and it was 11:52!) Eventually it got up to 103 and I began to panic. But what did it in for me was the rash. Red like a sunburn all over her. (Little did I know that it was Scarlet Fever.) So, we called the Pediatrician on call, and he said she should be fine until the morning and he would meet us at the office. He tested her for strep, but I think that was just a formality because as soon as he saw the rash he said she had it. He said that she must have a really high threshold for pain since she wasn't complaining with a sore throat. (This is not the first time we've heard such a thing!) Thankfully, the medicine has worked. And I am so thankful that we have such amazing doctors!! He saved me a trip to the ER!
It seems like yesterday was Easter! What happened to April, huh?
Here are just a few updates:
- TJ discovered that he DOES NOT like grass. He can say Dada. It sounds like he can say pop pop as well. But he doesn't do that all that often. And no, he doesn't say mama. He is moving around really well now. But it isn't really crawling.
- Sean's getting in the school groove. It takes some time away from us, but it is for a good cause. So, I am not complaining.
- Abby cracked her first egg the other day when we made cookies. I was really surprised at how well she did it. (She must take after Sean!)
- I haven't heard back from the job that I applied for that I really, really want. But I am hoping and praying that they call me! It seems like it would be perfect for me.
- Abby is in full three-year-old mode! One minute she is a happy, sweet kid. And the next she is throwing a fit, not listening, or just oozing with attitude!
- TJ has two teeth that have popped thru. He is eating really well (surprise, surprise!) and we reduced his bottles down to three per day. Then he started waking up at night to eat, so I added some more back in. He's getting 8 oz. bottles instead of 6 oz. And now he's sleeping better.
- We went back to the aquarium on Saturday to meet up with one of my friends from TBA and her 3 year old, Xander. It was just me and the kids while Sean did homework. I haven't been to the aquarium on a rainy weekend and didn't realize how busy it would be. But Abby did great and I got a workout carrying TJ in the front pack. I have to say I am impressed with myself for being able to take both kids, no diaper bag or ANY bag for that matter, and take Abby to the potty with TJ still strapped to me! At one point, though, Abby said that she wanted to get in the water with the sharks. The divers cleaning the glass were fun! They played pat-a-cake with Abby and peek-a-boo with TJ.
-We have baby Robins in a nest that Sean had to move. They were in the eve of the garage, but that just wasn't safe. So Sean moved them to the tree in front and even rigged up a shelf for them. And the momma Robin found them. (I took two pictures really quick while Sean showed Abby. They are so tiny!)
Up next is a trip to TN. I haven't been in almost a year, so it is time. We will be taking the dogs with us since it would cost over $300 to board them for a long weeknd.
Here are some updates and happenings that I just haven't had the time to write down (so to speak). There are a few, so I'll break 'em down by person.
Grammy and Pop Pop Perrigo:
*Came up for a visit a few weeks ago. Those trips seem to be so short! And I didn't get as many photos as I would have liked. But oh well!
*They brought Sean and I our birthday present...a roomba! I love that it vacuums for me!
Sean (AKA Daddy):
*Started school this week! I am so very proud of him! He is taking two classes (one is psychology) this quarter. I have to tell you that I don't miss homework!
*Has started working on the yard and garden. We've been starting some plants from seed. It was warm enough a week ago to keep them outside, but this week has been much cooler (in the 30's) which means bringing them back in for the night.
*Just got new tires and rims for his truck today! Now, we can begin the cleanout!!! (We will be making lots of trips to the dump!!!)
Abby:
*Has started watching more grown-up movies that I can tolerate. I am just glad that we have several movies to chose from. She just discovered Star Wars and The Blues Brothers. One of the funniest things is that she will sing "Stand By Your Man" over and over and over. Well, just that one line.... She also likes dancing with them in the church scene.
*As any of you with kids know, they love being outside. Abby is no different. When it was warmer last week, we spent most of our time out on the deck, taking walks, or at the park.
*And it is that time again. Abby is moving up to the Pre-School class over the next few weeks. She officially transitions in May. I am still working with her (albeit, not as I should) on her alphabet, but she has the counting thing down. I am really impressed with her.
*And I don't want to jinx myself, but Abby has been dry both naps and over night for the last month or so. Like Aunt Kate, I keep using the same pull-ups over and over just in case.
*Sean made Lamb on the Saturday before Easter. I didn't expect Abby to eat it, but she did! I was really happy that she did. She has been very picky lately. To the point where she doesn't really eat much at dinner. We haven't been making anything special just for her, so if she doesn't eat it, then she doesn't eat. And she will like something one week and then not eat it the next. I know..she's a female. (Sean reminds me of this all the time.)
TJ:
*We took TJ to the Zoo last Friday (Good Friday)- his first trip. What madness! I knew that it would be busy, but OH BOY! It was packed by 10 am. When we left at 2 pm, there was a "line" (and I use that word loosely) several hundred people long. So glad we got there early. It was beautiful weather and the kids were great!
*He is almost crawling....almost. He can get around pretty well by rolling, scooting, and turning. It is just a matter of time...
*And we do have two teeth poking thru. The two bottom front are coming in. He is drooling like mad and wants to chew on everything. He gets kinda cranky, but once you give him some Oragel, he's back to his happy self.
*He is also eating more babyfood and less bottle. And as if you didn't know, he eats everything. He hasn'y rejected anything. Carrots, however, didn't treat him so well. And since he is teething, we just started giving him those teether biscuits. He loves those. But I have to really watch to make sure he doesn't get small pieces that may fall off the soggy end.
*Since he is moving around more, he has been "exploring" his crib. He looked like he wanted to pull himself up, so I lowered it two notches. I also took the bumper pad out since I cought him chewing on it. Thank you auntie Karen for sending it our way! It was perfect in his room!
Me:
*I've been working on being more creative. So, I pulled out the sewing machine. I needed to hem the curtains that go on the windows flanking the front door. Done. Then I just started using up scrap material that I had. (I admit that I am a sucker for the remnants bin out Hobby Lobby.) I had picked up a few things when I went in a while back. I made my friend Amanda a fake "Taggie" blanket for Corrine (or is it Corinne? I never can remember. Sorry Amanda!) I didn't get a picture of that before sending to her, but I was pretty impressed with myself. Since then, I have made another blanket for Abby (very simple- I found some blanket binding on clearance for $2.50 that was Finding Nemo themed), a skirt for Abby from some leftover material from our wedding, a purse/bag for Abby using some material from my Valentine's Day flowers that she was particularly smitten with (don't know why...it is this horrible gold stuff!), and two bibs for TJ, as well as a tote bag/purse for me with a smaller bag made from the same material. Really, I am just practicing. My machine is not fancy at all. But it was only $90, so it is a basic model for me to start using. I bought a dress pattern, but I am not sure I am ready for that. We'll see!
Well, I have a 3 year-old! And she is a funny little girl! It seems that she changes so fast! If you blink, you'll miss it! I actually got a "whatever" the other day from her. She didn't say it in a mean way, but it was shocking none the less! She went to school with some non-chocolate cupcakes on Thursday (one of the kids is allergic to chocolate!) and we opened presents that night. Again, we have such wonderful friends and family! She loved ALL of her presents! She has also graduated from her booster seat. Her legs were getting so long, her knees were bumping the apron of the table.
I took TJ and Abby to their pediatrician on Friday for their 6 mo and 3 yr check-ups. Here are the stats:
TJ
Weight- 22 lbs 10 oz (100% +)
Length- 28.5 inches (95-100%)
I didn't write down his head measurement, but it was 95-100% as well. So, he is still proportional. The doctor wasn't worried. And he has slowed down on his weight gain.
Abby
Weight- 30.8 lbs (50%)
Height- 37 inches (50%)
Both kids did great with me at the Doctor's. I have taken them together before, but this was the first time that they both got shots and I was alone! Abby got one and TJ got 3 and an oral. Abby didn't cry at all- she just kinda looked at the nurse like, "why did you do that?!" And TJ just cried for a moment and then went back to being happy baby. The doctor even said something about how content he is. The doctor was very impressed that Abby was potty trained and with her verbal skills (AKA, she talks a lot!).
My parents are here for a visit, so I will post more pictures later...
I am ready for spring. (Just not the tornado stuff that comes with it!) I really need to get me and the kids O-U-T of the house! Everyone seems to be well, except for the occasional cough from one or both of the kids. And we're in full birthday prep mode! We have so many birthdays coming up soon! I am trying to get as many presents as possible before my unemployment runs out. (Love my husband- he is the best!! But 90% of all gifts given since we've been married have been purchased by me. He probably doesn't even know what you got. But aren't all men like this?) I really thought that I would have a job by now! But, alas, I don't. I go to the unemployment office on Tuesday to see if they can help me with funding for school. I may try to do some part-time work in order to keep Abby in school. Plus, I still have my student loans to re-pay. I just can't ask Sean to pay for that. I just can't....so, I need a job! One of my dear friends has just embarked on a new career with medical coding. Apparently a lot of people do this from home. So, I may try to do that. (Since she's already got her foot in the door, I am hoping that she can get me in, too!) Working from home will allow me to have more time with the kids and more flexibility (Dr's appts, etc.). Plus, I wouldn't have to buy new clothes or food for lunch. And..this is the kicker...no office drama!!! I really don't look forward to heading back into a typical "work" environment. So, please pray that this works out for me.
Snow, snow and more snow. I am ready for spring. We got Abby out in the snow today since she is feeling better. We weren't out too long. But there are some snow pictures to prove how much snow we got. The bad part about being at the end of a cul-de-sac is that the plow pushes everything into your yard. We have an 7-8 foot tall snow mound!!!
Now the rest of us are sick and Abby is feeling better. (Funny how that works!) TJ has a nasty little cough and runny nose. We've been trying to keep his fever down and nose cleaned out. We had a rough night two nights ago where he was getting up every hour, so we just brought him into bed with us. But last night we got the co-sleeper out and set it back up in our room. What a difference! We were able to use the incline wedge since the co-sleeper is more narrow than his crib. (He would just roll off of it in his crib!) Plus, I was able to get to him easier. It was better for all of us. We all got more sleep.
But since Abby is feeling better, we decided to go to her school's Valentine's party on Saturday. It was a BLAST! There were a ton of people there. And they had a DJ!!!! Suprprisingly enough, it was Sean's boss!!! (He does karaoke, too!) We got to see my old boss, too. His daughter used to go to Abby's school but is now in kindergarten. The kids had a great time dancing. We should have parties this good!!! There was a mosh pit of 3 yr olds!!! I took the camera, but unfortunately the battery was dying and I didn't get that many pictures. And the ones I did get were not great since it is not a high speed camera. The kids were moving...a lot. I think my favorite part was watching them do the "Hokey Pokey."
Well, we got the first real snow of the year. As of 6:00 pm it is still falling. Who knows how much we will end up with. I think it will top out at 5 inches. We'll see.
Sean worked from home today but took a break to take Abby out to shovel. He had gotten her a small shovel right before Christmas. And today she got to use it. (Pictures in the Jan 2010 album.)
I also uploaded a few random shots taken over the last few days as well as the photos that were on Abby's new kid-tough camera (those are on the Abigail page under "Pictures by Abby 2".). Enjoy!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
We had a very mellow New Year. I didn't stay up to "ring in the new year." I am getting too old for all that. Plus, we had a rough week with Abby. Tuesday she either ate too many blueberries or they were bad. She was sick all Tuesday afternoon and night. She seemed better on Wednesday, but wouldn't eat anything. She got sick again on Thursday morning, so we just hung out and took it easy.
Sean made home-made tamales on Friday. They were amazing! And now we have a new "New Year's" tradition!!! While we were waiting for the tamales to steam, we got some video of our newest Sullivan laughing. Check out the video above. Sean compressed it, so the quality isn't that great, but it is still pretty funny.
And today Abby went on her first trip to the dentist. I had forgotten that I made the appt. since I made it waaayyyy back in Oct or Nov. Luckily, they called on Friday to remind me. So, I didn't have time to get any books or anything. When I mentioned it to her, she started talking about Rudolph. It took me a minute to make the connection. For those of you who don't know, Hermie (sp?) is the misfit elf in "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" who wants to be a dentist instead of an elf. OK. So, I pretty much gave up after that....funny kid! I did try to prepare her for what was going to happen by telling her that the dentist was going to look in her mouth, make her teeth shiny and bright, and make sure her smile stayed beautiful! She was actually excited to go see the dentist this morning. And the Dr. was super nice! I really liked him and his assistants. They were great! He had me put Abby in the chair. (I thought they would have her sit in my lap...goes to show what I know!) She was excellent. She answered their questions and did what she was told. He scraped and checked for cavities with the pokie thing that I hate. And he even cleaned her teeth with the spinning dental tool thingy. (I have NO IDEA what the proper names of any of those tools are. Sorry!) He showed her what it was and that it wouldn't hurt by testing it on her finger. Again, she did great!
He did give me some advise about the finger-sucking issue. Plus, he told Abby that he had a rule that big sisters were not allowed to suck their fingers. (Love this man!) He did say that there was some slight mis-alignment due to the finger sucking. So, we will need to work on that some more. I did buy some "no-bite" fingernail polish yesterday in an attempt to ween her off of the sucking. It looks like it will help. It was only $4. There was some stuff that I found online that was $35. I may have to get that if this doesn't work.
She got to pick out her own princess toothbrush and even got a small tube of big-kid toothpaste (we've been using the flouride-free stuff that is safe to swallow). When we got home, we had some lunch after which she wanted to brush her teeth! I think she just wanted to use her new princess tootbrush. But she did say that she like the dentist and wanted to go back to see him! (YAY!!!!!)
So for all of you with kids who wanted to know how this first trip to the dentist went, here are some notes and suggestions:
I'm not trying to be a know-it-all. Promise. I just thought I would pass along my experiences to those of you who haven't gone thru it yet. Advise can be taken or ignored. (I'll never know!)
Oh what fun!!!!
We have had a few visitors this week which has made for a wonderful Christmas. Plus, Abby is in full Christmas mode this year, which makes it even that much more fun!
On Wednesday, my cousin Hannah and her boyfriend drove down from Akron while my brother Justin drove up from Nashville and met at our house. This was the first time I met Hannah's man, John. (Loved him!!!!) We got some Chinese and just hung out. Hannah is an art major (Junior) and brought some of her artwork for me to chose from! It was amazing to see so much talent. (I can barely color in the lines!) I can't wait to get some frames for the two pieces I chose. That also means that I will have to move something since these are REAL and deserve to be seen. It was great to just hang out with the young 'uns!!!
Unfortunately, Hannah and John had to head back to Akron for all the Christmas Eve festivities, but Justin stayed with us for a few days, including Christmas!!! Christmas morning is still pretty mellow...Abby isn't quite at the point where she will get up early and start opening gifts. We got up at regular time and had breakfast. I think we started opening presents around 10:00 am or so. Abby did so much better this year than last. Last year, she opened the first present and then stopped. She wanted to play with that toy and that was it! This year she did great opening each gift and even posing for the camera (operated by uncle Justin). She does have a little of my OCD, though. She opened everything at the seams, didn't really rip anything, and tried to get all the tape off of the box or package.
I am in awe of the amount of presents. We have some amazing friends and family. The only things I purchased were some stocking stuffers. I did wrap 3 gifts that I went shopping in our basement for. Let me explain: I am one of those "can't pass up a good deal" people. (I am recovering, though. HOARDERS!!!) So, back in 2003 after Christmas, I snatched up several Craftsman tool toys at like 75% off. She has had the wrench, hammer, nails, screwdrivers, and tool belt for a while now, but she was too young for the other stuff. And I forgot I had them in the basement. But in one of my cleanout efforts, I found them and thought she would be old enough to use them. So, I wrapped them up right after we got the tree up so that there would be presents under it. That is where the circular saw, chain saw, flashlight, and power drill came from. And she loves them.
There were two main themes for this year's Christmas for Abby: 1) The Polar Express and 2) The Nutcracker. So, "Santa" brought her a bell like in The Polar Express. That was the first gift that she opened and it barely left her side. SHE LOVED IT!!!! There are a ton of pictures of her and the bell!!! And Grammy and Pop Pop sent her ballet slippers, ballerina Barbie, and a DVD of The Nutcracker!!! She's already watched the DVD and keeps twirling the Barbie.
Aunt Desi got her a camera of her very own! She's already taken over 70 pictures. It's a kid tough camera, so we don't have to worry about her breaking it. When I can pry that away from her, I will try to download those and see what she's been taking pictures of!!
Thanks to all my friends and family who made this holiday so very special!! I wish we were all closer!
What a busy week! (Busier than normal, at least...)
First of all, it is the week before Christmas. Can't believe it's here already, can you? I finally got all the packages mailed, teachers gifts given, and cards sent. I didn't buy anything for the kids other than stocking stuffers, but magically there are a ton of presents under the tree!!! We have such wonderful friends and family who love us and our kids! We've been trying to keep Abby out of the presents. She's gotten better. I keep telling her that we get to open them on Christmas morning, but she thinks every morning is Christmas. So, I got her some special Christmas Eve pajamas so she will know that when she wears them, the next morning is Christmas. We'll see if that helps. (Plus, it will make for cute pictures on Christmas day!)
Thursday we went downtown to see the Cincinnati Ballet perform the Nutcracker. This was my first attempt to get all of us up, dressed, fed, and out the door by a certain time. I think I did pretty well by being only 15 min late...and really I wasn't late. I was trying to be out the door by 8:15 and ended up leaving at 8:30. Not too bad, huh? Sean couldn't take off work, so we had Mr. Kelly who used to watch Abby watch TJ. I had to go to the other side of town to drop him off, get downtown, find a parking garage, and get to our seats by 10:15. We managed to get there by 10:10 I think. Plenty of time.
There were tons of school groups, but since we were what they called a "small group," we got really good seats. And I do mean really good seats. We were 4th row almost center. The program lasted 2 hours with an intermission. There were some pyrotechnic-type stage props where the cannon fires and guns go off. Those were really cool. Abby will tell you that they scared her, but really they were just loud. She did so well. She sat in aunt Desi's lap for the 90% of the show. The last 20 minutes she sat in my lap. She was kinda getting squirmy, but so was I. There's only so much twirling and dancing that I can take in one sitting. Since this was just a dress rehersal, the orchestra was not there. I was a little disappointed in that, but I completely understand. The sets were amazing! And there were quite a few child dancers. All in all, it was a great performance. There were a lot of kids there (school groups and families), so it was a very relaxed atmosphere. During the intermission, Abby got up to stretch her legs. And she started twirling. (I think the poofy skirt is partially to blame.) One of the ushers told her that she was really good at it. She should be on stage! It was wonderful to watch her watch them dance. She would look over at me and smile. (Heart melting!!!) And she would clap when she was supposed to, and she didn't make any noises. She was very well bahaved. (Better than some of the older kids that were there!)
We got back to town around 2:00 after stopping for a very informal lunch. TJ did great at Mrs. Kelly's. I wasn't worried at all! He's such a happy, easy-going baby. And since I know Mrs. Kelly so well, I had no problem leaving him with her. Bonus- he got to be around older kids other than his sister. Mrs. Kelly said that they loved having a baby around and just talked to him and kept him entertained.
Since the performance was on a Thursday, Abby missed school and dance class. But her teachers said that she should come in on Friday since they were having their Christmas party. Yay!!! Apparently, they had a blast since they didn't take naps. Plus, she kept talking about the "party."
And finally, I had been wanting to take her to the Zoo for their annual Festival of Lights. Even though it gets dark earlier than it used to, it is also colder. And so, it has been challenging planning a trip when it is not too cold, rainy, snowy, etc. Well, we ended up going Friday night. I got tickets for Abby and Sean to go see the 4-D movie of the Polar Express, which she is infatuated with at the moment. (TJ and I stayed in the heated lobby while they watched.) Apparently, the seats move, they have wind/snow machines, and they pump in "smells" like hot chocolate and pine. But like her cousin, Megan, she wouldn't wear the glasses.
She got to ride the carousel, see Gingy (the gingerbread man) and his mother (a gingerbread woman), tons of lights, and the reindeer. (While checking out the reindeer, she got to see one poop. Yep. On a completely different note: we are going on 3 full weeks of pooping in the potty. I've gooten treats like stickers, $1 bags, etc. That helps. But I have also been adding fiber to her drinks. Not sure if that is helping, but it's not hurting, either. Thanks Kate, for the suggestion.) There were a ton of people there- as to be expected on the Friday before Christmas. That and we were expecting snow on Saturday with plunging temps. We waited in line (forever, it seemed) for the train ride thru the zoo. Sean and TJ waited that one out. After that, we got out of there. Still, it was nice and free since we are members.
The holidays seem to FLY by! Sean got a tree, we got it decorated (Abby helped), and outside lights are up! (But the wind storm this past week took some of it down.)
We're headed to the Cincinnati Ballet's performance of the Nutcracker on Thursday!!! I can't wait. I really do hope that Abby enjoys it. We are missing dance class that day for this performance. (I forgot about that when buying tickets.) Speaking of dance class, they are having a recital in May that they are already recruiting for. I have several concerns about that. First, is Abby ready? Second, am I ready? The performance and dress rehersal are in Cincinnati somewhere. I just don't think that I am ready for all that driving, etc. Third, COST$$$$!!! There is registration fee, costume fee of $50 or so, plus, we would have to pay $12 a ticket just to see her perform. Is this typical? I just can't justify it at this time. I really didn't want to be that mom who takes her kids to 3 different practices every night. Almost all of my mother friends here do that: acting class, soccer, peewee football, karate, gymnastics, tap, jazz, ballet, tumbling, cheer, etc. And I am not ready to start that.
Good news! My $53.00 glider finally came in. We got it assembled (who knew it came in a box?!?!?!?) and got it in TJ's room. I LOVE IT!!!
I also got to have lunch with some of my good friends that I haven't seen since TJ's baby shower. Friends really do make the world a better place!
I have been dilligent about going to the gym. I try to go 3x a week when Abby is in school. I think the next two weeks will be short since we have the Nutcracker then Christmas. But, maybe I can swing a Sat or Sun workout in there.
TJ is just the happiest baby! I love that he is awake more. He's such a people person. But catching all those smiles on film is difficult!!!!
Abby has been watching tons of Christmas programs. Her favorite right now is "The Polar Express." I have three presents under the tree that she just can't wait to unwrap! I have to keep an eye on her or she will. She hasn't quite figured out that Christmas DAY is when we open all the presents. We have an advent calendar which we hoped would help, but we still have to remind her. I just love her enthusiasm, though. And she is still too young to be materialistic from the standpoint of ASKING for anything. Hopefully, we can keep her like that. (But who am I kidding?!?!?!?)
Today Desi and I took the kids to the Cincinnati Museum Center to see Holiday Junction- a huge model train display!!! We paid for the whole museum so we ended up going thru the WWII section, the miniature models of Cincinnati over the years (very cool), part of the natural history museum, the mummy exhibit (the rotating exhibit), and the children's exploration section. That was probably the most fun. We go there at 10:00 and ended up leaving around 12:45 since we were all hungry. But we could have stayed so much longer. I am debating whether or not to buy the family membership. It was a ton of fun!
***Pictures have been added on the family pics tab, but I must have messed up a setting on my camera since they all turned out grainy and blurry. Sorry! Hoping that Desi got some better ones!***
So, we continue to get visitors of the "wild" kind. Today there was a goose (Sean thinks it is a gander) in our yard. And no, he didn't shoot it. Not that he didn't mention it. It did "talk " to us, though.
Let's recap all the wildlife that we have (in no specific order):
Goose
Bullfrogs and smaller frogs
Hawk
Deer
Possum
Racoon
Turtles
Snakes
Wild Turkeys
Egrets (pond and creek)
Beaver or otter (pond)
Ducks (pond)
and the many dogs/cats/birds/bugs/mice
Wonder what's next...
TJ is getting bigger every day it seems. I can't keep him in clothes! He's starting to laugh and smile even more, too! He's such a happy baby. I dare not even mention it in case I jinx myself, but since he's been in his room, he sleeps thru the night. We try to give him one last feeding around 10:00 or 10:30 and he sleeps until 7:00 or 7:30. And when he wakes up, he just chills out "talking" until we come get him. NICE, huh?!?!?!? We go to the opthamologist next week...I will give updates then.
Abby continues to make me earn my "MOM" badge. She's so independent and strong-willed! We've been watching the Nutcracker almost every day, so we got her a ballerina tutu. She's spinning and twirling like the real thing! (New album added on her tab.) I can't wait to take her to the live performance! And she's taking after her father in other ways as well as camping (as in the previous journal entry)...she's becoming quite the photographer. I have an old 3.5 megapixel camera that she is allowed to use. And she's getting pretty good. She's been playing with it since summer. There is a new album on her page where you can see her work. Some are of me in my VERY pregnant state, so no comments on my HUGE belly!!! But we are proud of her skills. It is interesting to see things from her perspective.
I went to the Dr. on Wed. for my post-op visit. Everything looks good, but I will have to wait until my X-ray in Jan. to verify "closure." He did have the pathology back on the extra-thick lining that he had to scrape away. Everything came back fine- no cancer and nothing that looked abnormal.
Thanksgiving has been very calm. Abby watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. She's getting to such a cool age where we can DO more stuff. I think she really liked it, so I would love to be able to go up there next year and visit with our wonderful NY friends. (And I think Sean's cousin Karissa would like to go, too!) Next, Abby and I painted our nails, made cookies, and got ready for TURKEY!!!
One final note- I have to brag!!! I don't usually go out shopping on Black Friday, but I did get up waaayyy early this morning to be at Babies R Us at 5:00 am when they opened. They had some glider rockers and ottomans on sale 50% off!!!! A chair that was normally $399 was on sale for $149.99!!! And to beat that, I had a $5.00 coupon and a $100.00 gift certificate (a baby present from a VERY generous friend!!!) which brought my out-of-pocket down to $53.00!!!!! I got a $300 chair for $53!!! I was home by 5:45 and even got to sleep some more!! Whew!!! However, I will mention that there were a ton of crazy people out!!! I had to drive by Best Buy and there were people in tents camped out. The two girls in front of me in line at Babies R Us said that people were camped out as of 9:00pm last night for Old Navy's sale. But there was a 1 hr wait to get into the store and 2 hr wait to check out. I am not that kind of shopper!!!!! (But yes, I was 3rd in line at Babies R Us. Luckily, the store manager let us wait in the foyer area where it was heated. It got pretty cold last night here. And by the time the doors opened, there were 50 or so people behind me.)
Abby has camping fever...so much so that Sean got the tent out and set it up on the back porch. She actually took her nap out there that day. She would not come out of the tent except to use the potty. We had to convince her that we would let her sleep in it that night but that we had to bring it inside. The tent is not a cold weather tent and neither are the sleeping bags that we have. So, Sean will need to acquire some of the cold-weather gear if he wants to actually go camping this winter. Anyway, he did bring it inside (for weather and deer hunter purposes, but that's another story entirely!). And he, Abby, and Sophie slept in the tent in the living room. Needless to say, Sean's back wasn't feeling so great that next morning. And Sophie ended up on the couch at some point- it's more comfortable than the floor!
TJ is growing up right before our eyes. He's awake a lot more now, sleeping thru the night, and "talking" more to us. He's also the master of smiles and giggles. He loves it when you talk to him. We go to the opthamologist on Dec. 3 and then not back to the pediatrician until Jan. His eye has good days and not-so-good days. But it seems like the eye itself works like normal, but the eyelid is not as strong as it should be. I am looking forward to what the Dr. says. The pediatrician said that we could start adding some rice cereal to his milk. So, we've been adding just a teaspoon or so to 2 bottles each day. That has really helped to keep his total ounces down.
I go back to the Ob/Gyn next week for my post-op appt. Everything seems to be just fine. No real pain- just some cramping. Really hoping that the tubes are sealed up. I really don't want another Depo shot.
And finally, we went to the Library this week for the first time. I know! I know! Bad Mommy! But I wanted to find a copy of Baryshnikov's performance in the Nutcracker. I didn't want to buy it since I wasn't sure if Abby would actually watch it. And the reason I wanted her to see it in the first place is because I ordered tickets to see the Cincinnati Ballet perform it in December. They have two full dress rehersals at 10:30am before their first night performance. And those tickets were a lot cheaper. I think those performances are mainly for school groups and such. But I thought it sounded like a good way to introduce her to the theatre/ballet without 1) spending a fortune for something that I am not sure she would sit thru, and 2) annoying people who paid $70 per ticket in case she makes too much noise. The library had the DVD and she watched it twice that day. She has watched it twice since then. Now granted, she was at home and didn't sit on the couch riveted to the TV, but I have hope that when she gets to the theatre, that she will be excited to see the performance. She is taking a begining dance class, so she relates what they are doing to what she is learning. She kept saying that they were dancing on their tippie-toes. And she kept spinning all night Monday night. I think it may help that we will get all dressed up to go to the show. (I found a really cute skirt and sweater at The Children's Place for next to nothing!)
As a side note- I plan on visiting the Library more often. They have a ton of CD's and DVD's and books on CD(as well as books). I also plan on donating some CD's and DVD's of our own that we don't like or watch. I would rather it go to someplace like the library than sit in our house cluttering up our space! And they have an entire Kids section that is AMAZING! Plus, I think I need to let Abby run around more and learn to listen to me. As well as me learn to let go....that's the hard part. But before I know it, she will be in school and I will have to let go! Let's just say this is all practice for the future!
Time just keeps slipping away!
TJ and I spend our days hanging out and doing housework. On the days that Abby is home, we pretty much do the same. He's getting so big and growing up so fast. He is laughing and smiling, "talking" to us, and trying to push up onto his feet. (I think he just wants to be mobile so he can run from his sister...or maybe chase her...not sure which.)
My parents and Justin came up last weekend. It was nice to see everyone. Had a blast with my brother! We've been spending some nights by the fire pit. Sean has gotten a campfire popcorn popper that works really well!! (Not sure what the proper name is...)
Abby is busy being Abby. She keeps us on our toes. The other day we had noodles for lunch. I am not sure how or why she did it, but she ended up with a noodle in her nose. I thought I got it all out, but apparently I didn't. Later that night when Abby and Sean were playing (and Abby laughing really hard), another noodle came out her nose. That thing had to be about an inch long!!! Not sure where she was hiding it! Oh well!
And finally, I had my "procedure" done yesterday. I won't go into all the details, but let's just say it was all sorts of fun! I go back the day before Thanksgiving for my post-op and then in Jan to have an X-ray to determine if the tubes are closed off.
So, Abby got dressed up and went around to 4 of our neighbors and actually "Trick-or-Treated" this year. It was colder than I expected, so we cut it short. Also, there weren't as many kids this year. And more older kids who were rude. Oh well.
The pumpkins were grown in Sean's garden. We carved them Friday night. Then, I got to go out with a friend and see a movie! It didn't start until 9:55, so I was able to get Sean set up for the night and Abby in bed. She didn't even know I was gone.
TJ is getting bigger and stronger every day. We got Abby's old excersaucer cleaned up and put him in it. I don't think it is meant for an 8 week old, but he seems to like it. He can pretty much hold up his head, but we pad the area behind him to help out. We go back to the Dr. on Friday for his two month check-up. And I get to take him and Abby by myself. And he get shots. What fun!!!! (I'm taking wagers as to his weight. He's huge! And long! I think he's close to 17 pounds. Seriously.)
My mom and dad are planning to come up next weekend for a little visit. They haven't seen him since the day after we brought him home. So, they are in for a surprise since he is 10 pounds heavier now!
I had a few visitors this week as well. My aunt and uncle were heading up to Ohio and stopped by for lunch on Thursday. (This is the 1/2 way point.) They just stayed long enough to stretch out and eat, but it was great to see them!!!
Then, on Friday, one of my old friends from Gap days stopped by for a few hours. It was nice to catch up!
Things have been moving along here.
Abby has been testing me like never before. I just don't know how to make her listen. She's not a bad kid, but there are times I wonder... Last Sunday was a mess. Most of you have already heard it already, so I won't repeat it all. Let's just say that the fish, rocking chair, and CD player survived- but she thinks that the CD player and rocking chair are broken. The chair is in TJ's room right now. We were hoping that the repurcussions of her actions would help her understand that she did something wrong. I think it has worked. She will ask to rock with daddy, and I have to tell her that she doesn't have a rocking chair. She just says, "Oh yeah- it's broken." But when she wants to listen to music and I say that it is broken, she says "I broke it. I poured water on it." So, hopefully it will work. Aparently, I kept saying, "I just dont understand" because she kept saying that for several days as well as several sporadic "I'm sorry's". We'll move the rocking chair back by the time my parents come up for a visit in a few weeks. (Personally, I miss rocking with her!) And she is not allowed anywhere near the fish tank. She is no longer allowed to feed him.
TJ is growing quickly. He's staying awake for longer periods of time. He's trying to roll over. He likes to "stand up." (He's really strong!) And he's still pretty mellow- except when he's hungry! And oh boy! We go back to the pediatrician on 11/6 for his 2-month check up. I'm sure he'll still be off the charts for weight. He's all cheeks! And I finally got his announcements made and sent! Yay for me!
I am hoping to go to the pumpkin patch this weekend. We didn't go last Sunday as I had planned since we didn't want to confuse Abby by punishing her and then going someplace fun. I will try to take a ton of pics.
Speaking of pictures: I took several fall tree pictures and added a new tab with those. I am NOT a good photographer, but I didn't want to miss all the colors.
So far we have all pretty much managed to stay well. Sean and I got out regular flu shots this week. I have never had one. Abby has had hers. But I still don't know about the H1N1. Not sure if we can even get one. They are so limited and only go to the doctors here in KY- they aren't doing clinics like up in OH.
Well, we are working on getting into the groove of things.
Well, I tried to post one day a few weeks ago...but I must have hit the "back" button and it wiped out my entire post. I won't be trying to re-do what I had done before...plus there are new things to mention!
Baby Shower:
My wonderful friends threw a shower for me on 9/12. I took Abby with me while Sean and TJ hung out at home. It was a fantastic shower!!! We had so much fun!!! And I got a ton of cute boy clothes!!! I am so thankful for all my great friends!
Colds:
We were hoping that the cold that Abby came home with on 9/9 would avoid TJ, but it didn't. We ended up taking him to the Dr. who told us to just keep doing what we're doing...elevate his head, saline for the nose, and vaporizor. It is better, but he still has moments when it seems like he can't breathe. We go back for his one month visit on 10/8, so I'll check with the Dr. about all my "worries" then. You would think that after having one, you wouldn't be so worried with the second one. But that is just not the case...
Visits:
Sean's parents drove out for a little visit. It never seems to be long enough. Although I am sure that they are soooo ready to get back to their own bed and some peace and quiet!!! (Abby can be a handfull!!!) I will post some pictures soon!
Aunt Karen is currently in transit to come out for a few day visit as well. I'm sure we will take a few pictures to share as well!!
Etc.
We are in a pretty good routine at home. Sean goes back to work on Monday after being off to visit with his mom and dad. I am sure he's not looking forward to that...but he may be ready to get back in the groove. TJ's newborn screen #2 came back normal, Thankfully! He has put on the weight though. When we went back in, he had already gained 2 pounds! I still joke that he was early because he wasn't getting enough to eat!
WARNING: There may be some details regarding labor and delivery that some of you may not want to read. Just thought I would forewarn you!!!
Labor:
So, I'll backtrack 9 days or so to Saturday, Sept. 5. We had planned on my mom and dad coming up for the long weekend for several weeks to help up finish up the baby's room and move a few things into the basement. When I woke up that morning, I noticed some pink "stuff" when I went to the restroom. (I warned you!!!) I thought that I had lost my mucus plug. With Abby, I went into labor just a few days later. So, I was a little worried. I think I actually got weepy and said, "I'm not ready." (Not that you ever are.)
Throughout the day I had some "leakage" of more of the pink stuff. Mom and dad arrived around 11:00 am, and we got to work moving some furniture, etc. Around 1:00 pm, I stood up and felt a rush of fluid. OK, so I really did not know if my water broke or if I had just peed in my pants. They had to break my water at the hospital when I went into labor with Abby, so I had nothing to compare it to. I just continued on about my business including a trip to Target for some last minute things for the basement. While I was there, I picked up some bottles and things. I had already picked up some formula and diapers earlier in the week- just in case. (Guess it's a good thing I did.)
When I got home, I made dinner (lasagne). We ate around 7:00 pm or so. I guess that's when I started having contractions. I started timing them, but they were really eratic. From 35 minutes to 1 hr to 25 minutes. We called the Dr. around 9:00. He said that if it was false labor, a bath would stop the contractions. I had taken a shower while the lasagne was cooking (again, just in case), so I didn't really want to try that. Oddly enough, my contractions got really regular at that point. And they were 4 minutes apart!!!! At 9:45 or so, we left for the hospital. Meanwhile, Sean and my dad found the carseat, sterilizer, pack and play, bags of bottles, and other items that we were waiting to dig out of the basement.
I think Sean really thought it was false labor. I had packed a few things after my contractions started to actually hurt, but Sean didn't. We got to the hospital around 10:00 pm. The nurses in triage wanted to verify that my water had actually broken, so that needed a few tests which took FOREVER!! When they examined me, I was only dialated to 2!!!!. I think I cried. I really thought I was farther along since the contractions hurt so bad. The nurses were few and far between. Apparently, there was a full moon that night and all the triage rooms were occupied. Also, a woman came in dialted to 8 with her bag bulging, so they all ran to help her and make sure she didn't deliver in the hall.
I had been begging (and I do mean begging) for an epidural for a while, but they had to do bloodwork to check my platelets or something. That took 20 minutes... 20 LONG minutes. I got into a room at 11:30 pm and the anestheseologist finally arrived to administer the epidural. I have no idea how long that took. They checked me right before and I had dialted to 7. The Dr. on call had arrived and was joking around. (Well, he was joking around with Sean. I was in no mood!!!!) Apparently, he asked if I was ready to have this kid naturally, to which I screamed NO! They made Sean leave while giving me the epidural. He was going to go to the car to get the bag, but the nurse told him no stay close since I was progressing quickly. And it is a good thing. As I was swinging my lags back into the bed, I felt the need to push. The Dr. and nurses were telling me not to push yet. They were trying to get me and the room ready. They were rushing around like you wouldn't believe. When they checked me at 12:24, I was complete. And seven minutes (that's 7 minutes!!!) later, Thomas James Sullivan was born!!! The nurses were amazed. I think I pushed 3 times thru two contractions. I looked at the nurse and asked if I even needed the epidural. I almost made it without any drugs!!! ALMOST!!!
Even at 37 weeks, he came out pefectly healthy! Thankfully, there were no problems. His biliruben was a little elevated, but other than that, we were good. We had to take him back later in the week for a 2nd check which came back that things were improving.
Thankfully, little man was easy on mom. I didn't have any tears or require any stitches, so recovery has been amazing compared to the previous delivery.
Sorry for the long post. I will update more soon on Abby's response, my baby shower (post baby) and how we are adjusting.
I added some pictures and will update this as soon as I can, but for now, this will have to do.

Friday update:
Abby and I met my friend from work (Lisa) today for lunch. She has a son two weeks older than Abby. So much fun to watch those two together!!! They were both great, played, had a blast, and ate (a little). We decided on a Chinese buffet since that would be easy and have lots of options. Plus, it is a little more laid back than a real restaraunt. I think I see lots of play dates in our future!!!
But we had a date with Desi and her friend, Verne, who works on the big FedEx trucks. For those who don't know, Abby is infatuated with trains, planes, Jeeps, and Big Trucks. We thought this would be a fun experience for her to get to see one up close. She was a little intimidated by it's size. I'll be honest- so was I. I have been around trucks quite a bit (especially working in Receiving w/ Gap). But I had never been inside of one. It had the cab with the bed. There is A LOT more room in there than I thought. Not too shabby! Abby got to pull the cord and make the horn sound. (I think that kinda scared her. It was really loud!!) But she had a field day pushing all the buttons!!! It was just a quick trip, but well worth it. She hasn't stopped talking about the big truck. Well, she is asleep now, so I guess we'll see what she says when she gets up!
Pregnancy/Basement update:
3 weeks (officially) left. We'll see what the little man thinks of that. I went to the Dr. on Thursday. No weight gain. I kinda expected that since I haven't really been able to eat for the last week. The acid reflux is killing me. I have been taking Zantac, eating small meals, not eating near bedtime, etc. All the stuff they tell you to do. But nothing seems to help. And the Dr. wouldn't prescribe anything. I guess I will just suffer thru the next few weeks. I'll be OK. Belly still measures right on. He is in the right position. And he's still moving around a lot. He had hiccups the other night that kinda frightened me since they were so powerful. I think the whole house was moving!
My mom and dad are coming up for the weekend to help us get the baby's room ready. There is still some furniture that needs to be moved to the basement. And I can't help Sean with that. Sean has pretty much finished the basement. I think there are a few final little things that need to be done like baseboards, hang the mirror in the bathroom, etc. But it looks great!!! I'll post some pictures when we get it all put together this weekend.
Well, summer is almost over. We had a few weeks of hot, humid weather. But nothing too bad. I don't think it has gotten over 95 degrees. And I am not complaining. It looks like we may be trending cooler next week, so Abby and I tried to get one last trip to the zoo and pool in on Wednesday. It was a short trip since we got a late start. But it is always nice to go walk around and get out of the house for a little bit.
And the pool was nice- this time I remembered the camera. Abby made friends with a 4-yr old girl, Rachel. They played really well together. It's amazing to see how much they will change in just a few more months. Rachel was very patient with her since Abby is going thru a "mine" phase and is getting very bossy. "Rachel get in the water...Rachel throw me the ball, etc."
Abby has transitioned to the Toddler II class at pre-school. The entire class went together, which is good. She's still with all her friends. But there are three new teachers. So far, she seems to really like it. They all do. I think it is due to the new and different toys that are in this room. She's still doing well with the potty training thing. We still have to work on #2. But most days, she's going to school and home in the same big girl undies. (Who would have thought I would devote so much time and energy into posting about potty training?!?!?!?!? Sorry!)
I finally got to have lunch with some of my old co-workers this week! It was really nice to see them all and catch up a little bit. I miss them- but not work. I do miss the schedule of getting up, getting ready, and going to work for the social aspect. But I do not miss the stress of actually working. (That may be a problem when I need to go back to work, huh?)
My last Dr. appt went well. I have now gained a total of 8 pounds!!! However, I will tell you that I must have lost weight somewhere else, because this belly is HUGE!!! I promise to take a picture or two soon for all those who are requesting it. I have apx 4 weeks left. And the pressure is on. I mean litterally. I forgot about the pressure of the baby's head. He has slowed down with his crazy movements, but still kicks all the time. I go back to the Dr. next Thursday for my group B strep test and all sorts of other "fun" stuff. Then, it is every week.
Sean is praying that this kid is late like Abby was. He is still working away on the basement. It looks really good and is moving right along. Drywall and ceiling are done, and the toilet, baseboards, and flooring are installed in the bathroom. Now we just need to paint and install the flooring in the rest of the basement before we can move in. He's done such a great job. There are some cute pictures of Abby being daddy's little helper one afternoon. She loves tools. I finally got the crib assembled which took some trial and error since there were no instructions and this one has the drop side. Abby's didn't have that, so I had nothing to really compare it to. But while it was being assembled, she had her own little tool belt on with her wrenches and hammer helping out. I want her to be independent and be able to do things on her own, but that independence will bite me in the rear eventually. (Right, mom? Payback is a pain, huh?) Luckily, we have not had any real meltdowns in the last two weeks. I've been trying to keep more on a schedule which helps. She will be going to school three days a week starting next week. I think that will help as well. I also signed her up for dance class for 45 min. a week. The great thing about it is that it is during school and the instructors come to the school!!! I don't have to take her anywhere!!!! Yay!!!! But I thought it would be nice to have some scheduled exercise. Plus, it will help with balance and coordination.
Sean has also tried his hand at making his own beer. He tried making wine while I was pregnant with Abby. I think the beer will turn out better.
Abby has hit the Terrible Two's in full swing. Not sure that the mood swings are normal for boys (I am praying that they aren't), but this is getting old. It has only been going on a few weeks now, but it is getting old fast. I think that we have had a lot of changes going on in the last few weeks and will continue to have some changes over the next few months. So, maybe once things settle down a little, we will get our sweet Abby back for good and not just for 10 minutes at a time.
Justin came up for a quick visit and to relieve us of the spare bed from the baby's room. (Thanks!) Abby LOVES her uncle Justin! She kept asking where her Justin was. And she made him take her to the potty. She didn't want me or Sean to do it...nope...she wanted Justin. Poor guy didn't know what he was getting into did he?
I go back to the Dr. on Thursday and will give an update then.
Oh yeah, and it's football season!! Abby loves football. I am looking forward to this season.
Abby Update:
Pregnancy update:
Unemployment:
Zoo:
Yard Sale:
Basement Renovation:
Sean's Pickles:
So, Abby has pretty much potty trained herself. Last weekend she just started telling us BEFORE she had to go to the bathroom. I have gotten her a few big girl undies. She made it two days this week at school in the big girl undies as well as the rest of the week at home. We have even gone out in public in big girl undies. We went to the bathroom at a restaraunt and used it successfully! (I bought sticky covers for public restrooms!) We have had our share of accidents, but I am really pround of her. We still put her in diapers at nap time and bed time. Nap time may not be needed much longer. Today, she had on a diaper and told us she had to go, so that's looking good. #2 is not going as well. I think she's holding it in. (It's been a few days.) We're trying...She has not needed any rewards or motivation, but we may have to do that with the poo process.
Note: I don't have any pictures of the veggies. Sorry. I will try to get some and upload them as soon as I can.
Sean's Garden Update:
We have harvested lots of goodies from Sean's garden including: strawberries, grape tomatoes, squash, a jalepeno, and lots of cucumbers. Sean is pickling some of the cucumbers. Can't wait to try those! We also have eggplant, blueberries, grapes, beans, watermelon, and pumpkins still growing!!! The birds tend to get the berries and grapes. But the cucumbers are thriving! This is a good thing since Abby will eat almost a whole one each night.
Hawk of some kind:
On July 4th we noticed a hawk hanging out in our back yard area. For those who have not been to the house, we have an acre that backs up to a wooded area with a creek, etc.
Well, the hawk is still hanging around. Sean did get a few good pictures of it in flight, but I can't seem to be able to download from the card. (It just doesn't like me!) He was sitting on one of the posts in our immediate back yard not even 25 feet from our back door. I have been trying to determine what kind of hawk. There are several that it could be: Broad Winged Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, or Sharp-shinned Hawk. I personally think it is the Sharp-shinned due to the call it makes (check out this website to listen: Whatbird.com.) Anyway, it is really amazing to watch it. He almost got a rabbit the other day. I have never been much of a bird watcher, but this guy is a pretty cool bird of prey.
Abby:
Abby and I met up with some friends of mine from a previous job for lunch. My friend Rhonda brought her daughter, Stella, who is 7 and her step-grandson, Cary, who is 12. After lunch, we went swimming. It was a little cold and overcast at times, but the kids didn't mind. Abby and Cary were best buds immediately!!! He pulled, pushed, and tossed her around that pool for quite a while. Apparently, he has a 3 yr old brother. He was great with her. He pretty much taught her how to swim independently (but still with arm floaties). She gained a lot of confidence today. I already knew that she was a quick learner, but having the other "big kids" there just sped things along!
The down side to all this fun was that we missed our normal nap time. She did fall asleep in the car on the ride home, but that was only 30 minutes. So, we had some rough moments until bedtime. But she will recover and so will I. It was worth it!!!
Yard Sale Delay:
I broke down and got a storage unit for a few weeks to clear out some of the stuff that I want to sell or get rid of. It helps to have one area that I can dump it all. Unfortunately, time is slipping away from me. I probably won't get to have the sale until 2nd weekend in Aug. Oh well.
Basement Remodel:
Sean is dilligently working on the basement. He has completed framing, insulation, rough plumbing, rough electric, and installed sub floor in the soon-to-be bathroom. I think he wants to try to drywall next week while he is off work. YAY!!! It will be quieter and more comfortable for any guests once we get it done. And seeing as we won't have a spare bedroom, it will be a necessity.
Pregnancy Update:
I went back to the Dr. today for my 29th week check-in. All looks good. I had my glucose test last week which came back normal. Really good!!! Blood pressure was good, and I had lost 1/2 pound. Upon hearing that news, I was really interested in the weight thing. So, I asked what my starting weight was. They had two weights for me: one from my "yearly" and one from my first OB appt. If you go by my "yearly" weight, I have gained a total of 2.5 pounds. If you go off my first OB appt weight, I have lost 1.0 pound. Either way, that was interesting news for me. I feel huge. I am definately bigger. At least my belly is. It measures right on the money and the Dr. didn't say anything about my weight, so I am not worried. (In fact, I am kinda happy since I know that you can gain a pound a week in your last trimester.) I go back in three weeks. I'm supposed to do kick counts now, but don't really see the need since this one moves more than he is still. I think he will be a soccer player for sure!
**This next paragraph may have TMI for some readers. My apologies.**
And finally, I asked about getting my tubes tied after delivery since this will be it for us. One of each is more than I ever hoped for!!! The Dr. informed me that since St. Elizabeth is a Catholic hospital, they cannot perform that procedure. WHAT?!?!?!? What I am I supposed to do? I wasn't raised Catholic, so this feels kinda like they are taking my options away. He did suggest a vasectomy, though. (I thought this was funny coming from a man!) But he also mentioned a new procedure that they are allowed to perform in the office. I think it is called Essure. They put what looks like little springs in the falopian tubes. Your body grows around these tubes or stints and blocks the egg from leaving. This is a permanent procedure. My question is: if they can't do one, why can they do the other? Now, I just need to see if our insurance will cover it.
Abby Update:
Abby is still in princess mode, but will now actually watch movies like "A Bug's Life" and "Toy Story." She likes what she likes. For example, "O Brother, Where Art Thou" was on TV a few weeks ago, and she really liked the song, "Didn't Leave No Body But the Baby." (She calls it "Go to Sleep Little Baby".) I have that soundtrack and thought she might like to hear the song again. Well, she did. Over and over and over and over. It is in the car cd player. As soon as you step out the door to go to the car she asks to hear the song. She'll ask that you turn up the volume. It's weird. There is one other song that she likes from that soundtrack, "Down to the River to Pray." It is also an a cappella song sung by women, so I think that may be why she likes it too. She will actually "sing" both songs (but only when she feels like it- never on demand). But don't worry- she likes all kinds of music. She really likes Van Halen, too. I also got her the soundtrack to the Tinker Bell movie. (I think more for me, honestly.) It is rather Celtic sounding. There is one song on there that she likes and will listen to over an over.
Washington, D.C. Trip:
Our DC trip was amazing! I will not be able to recount all the wonderful and exciting moments in this one entry. Here are a few points:
The weathermen have been questionable here lately- calling for rain and no rain, calling for sunny skies and being wrong again. We did get a few days of relief where is got down right cool. We were able to turn the AC off and be really comfortable. This is really nice for me, but kinda puts a damper on all the pool activities when it drops down to the 60's at night. As a result of the weather, Abby has a runny nose. Yuck!
Abby is still on her princess and fairy kick! Grammy Sullivan sent her a cute tiara and earrings to help her inner princess come out!!!
And Grammy Perrigo sent some dresses to make up for the fact that little brother keeps getting new outfits. (Like she needed the excuse!)
We went to the mall today since I was in the area. I wanted to take her to the Disney Store and see what we could find. But, we really didn't buy anything. We did, however, ride the carousel- TWICE! She would NOT get on any of the moving animals. She really liked watching them, but refused with screams to be put on one. Oh well! What do you expect, mom?!?!?!
And so it goes...
Sean and I have agreed on the colors for the baby's room. There will be 3 tan walls and one blue accent wall. I am desperatly trying to clean that room out. I am thinking that I will need to rent a storage unit for the month until I can have a yard sale. Whatever doesn't sell will be going to Goodwill. But there is a ton of stuff that I have accumulated over the years that needs to go. Lives change. I don't entertain like I used to, so all the serving dishes will need to go. Along with the books, clothes, and CRAP that we hold on to for no good reason.
Sean is moving right along with the basement, too! We will have some drywall delivered in a few weeks, we have the flooring, and have picked out a color for the walls. So I am hoping that by sometime in August, we will be done with 1/2 the basement (and the crap that is in the other 1/2 may be gone in the yard sale or in use soon by kidd-o #2!!!)
BTW- still loving this "unemployed" thing!
More summer fun!! And some not-so-fun.
On a trip to Costco, some rather small pebbles cracked my windshield. It grew to over 5 inches before the return. So, we got a new windshield this week. Luckily, we have comprehensive insurance, so there was no deductible. And the glass folks came to our house and did it the next day!! Yay!
Sean got Abby a pool for those really hot days. Which we had on Friday. It was the first of the really hot days. It got up to 94 with a heat index of 102! I have to admit that I was sweltering! We have officially turned on the AC for the season. It's so much easier to sleep that way!
I took Abby to the doctor on Friday. She has this dry skin around her eye like she's been crying too much. There's also a spot over her other eye, in the corners of her arms, and one on her shoulder. So, off to the doctor we went! He said it looks like it could be seborhea (sp?) or ezema (sp?). We're trying to keep her lotioned up and creme on the spots. We'll see if that works. The only patches that bother her are her arms. She doesn't really itch at the rest.
Abby has discovered princesses. She already knew about Princess Fiona from Shrek. But she has now moved on to Cinderella. (BTW- it's really funny to hear her try to pronounce that!) And even TinkerBell!!! If the movie or TV show doesn't have a princess, she asks where the princess is. Is this normal? Should my 2 yr-old know this? Yikes!
And Abby and I went back to the pool again today. She is learning so much so fast! She's floating on her own, using the kickboard and kicking to move, and jumping into the pool (well, into my arms in the pool). I am really proud of her. We took pictures at the pool today, but something is wrong with the card. So, Sean will have to help get that fixed before I can download them. There are some really good shots of her with aunt Desi! I rarely take my hands off of her. But I know she needs to learn to float on her own. She's so independent!
Unfortunately, Sean married a WHITE girl. I put SPF 45 on me and SPF 50 on Abby. Guess who got burned again?!?!?!? Abby has some "tan lines" which are still not good, but better than I got. It is not bad, but still not good for ya! I think I wil try to get the spray stuff for next time. That seems like it may be easier. Oh well.
Today Abby and I ventured out for our first day of our summer together. First we went to the zoo. Thankfully, it was not as crowded as last time. But it was challenging at times with a determined two-year-old and only me. Having Daddy with us really helps. But there were a lot of moms with their kids(s) there. And a lot of grandparents with the grandkids. (I am still amazed at what single parents go thru on a daily basis!!!) One of the good things about going during the week was that we got to ride the train this time. Abby loves the train. We rode it twice. Since we're members, we get unlimited rides. Nice. We got there around 10:00 am and left around 12:30 pm. Not too bad, really. And Abby got to pet a snake. It was a black Rat Snake named Ebony. She wouldn't pet it until I did. I was really proud of her. (This doesn't mean that I like snakes. I just don't want her to be terrified of them.)
After a short nap in the car on the way back to KY, we stopped by aunt Desi's pool for a while. This was the first time in the pool since last summer. Oh my! I was worried that Abby wouldn't want to get in or that she may have a fear of it. But I should have known better. She practically jumped in. She didn't want me to hold on to her but quickly figured out how important I was when she went under a few times! We did learn to spit the water out today as well as how to kick. We had lots of floaties and kick boards. She didn't want to share her floatie from last year (which she is now too big for) with another little girl. This sharing thing will have to change- and soon! She didn't throw a fit or anything. But she gave me a dirty little look when I gave her float to the other mother. She just kept saying, "my float." But she eventually got over it. The other little girl who was almost two DID NOT like the water! I thought the float would help, but she didn't want in that either. Oh well. Glad that Abby likes the water. I had to drag her out when I could see that she was moments away from passing out from exhaustion. I figured she would sleep all the way back to our house, but she didn't. She's passed out now. But it was a big first day of summer. And they all won't be like this. But the rest of the week is supposed to be rainy, so I thought I would try to get a few things in early on.
I had another appt. yesterday. All was good. Heartbeat was nice and strong. Met the new Dr. She is the first female associate- and I really like her!!! Very nice! I had only gained 1/2 pound, too!!!! I know, I know. People keep telling me that pregnant women are supposed to gain weight. But since I have struggled all my life with it, gaining as few "extra" pounds as possible is my goal. I gained 45 with Abby but lost most of it rather quickly. That's not to say that my body returned to its pre-pregnancy state. But the weight came off. I am hoping the same happens this time. I know the last trimester is when you gain it all, so I'm trying to hold out!!! But please don't get me wrong- I EAT!!! Lunch is usually my biggest meal. And when I eat- watch out!
I go back on 7/6 to take the diabetes glucose test and pre-register at the hospital. Then my next appt is 7/14. I think after that it will be every two weeks. Oh joy!
We've been busy since our "vacation." The first full week back to work was...long. But we made it thru. Abby has been clingy with both Sean and I when we drop her off at school. That makes it difficult. I worry about changing her schedule too much. In another week she will drop down to two days a week. I know it is good for her, but that is all I can afford without my typical paycheck. But we have lots of fun stuff planned for the summer.
I am thinking of doing some swim safety lessons for her. Since we will be spending so much time at the pool, I think it would be wise to have her know some basic floating/swimming techniques. Also, my friend Desi and I are going to get re-certified for First Aid/CPR soon. We have an EMT friend who lives a couple of streets over from me who will do it for us. We both got certified last year at work, but it is always good to have a refresher. Plus, we'll get one-on-one attention. I don't know about you, but every time I've had one of those classes, whether it be high school, college, or work, my attention is poor.
My friend, Yuki, from work gave us her crib and I bought a changing table today that sort-of matches it (same wood tone). But, we have to clean out the spare bedroom in order to set it all up. I plan to have a yard sale at the end of June to get rid of some "junk" that needs to go- including the full size mattress and box springs from the spare bed room (AKA the baby's room). I hate having yard sales, but it may be a good way to get rid of some stuff and make some money too.
We are also planning a tip to DC in July for a couple of days. Technically, it is after my "do not travel" date, but only by a few days. The flight is only an hour and there are lots of good hospitals there if anything happens. I am so excited. I LOVE DC!!!! So, that will be my last trip before the baby.
I have a week left of work. I am hoping that I can make Tuesday my last day. I've handed off everything that I can. It makes for a long day when you don't have anything to do. So, I hope to have all loose ends tied up on Tuesday and get out a little early. We'll see. My boss will be in Canada on Tuesday and Wednesday, so I may be stuck until Thursday. Hopefully, we can agree to something on Monday while he's still in town.
And finally, and explaination of the pictures above: for those who remember last summer's HUGE turtle that was eating Sean's grapes- we think it was a female. She's still hanging out in the pond out back. When the water is clear, you can see her swimming. Well, it looks like she had babies!!! Sean found that little guy on Thursday. Don't worry- he took him down to the pond. He was so tiny! (At least compared to his momma!!!)
And the other pictures are Abby "helping" mommy make blueberry muffins-one of Abby's favorites!!! She does really well with the stirring. She just doesn't understand the baking part. She wants her muffins now!!!
I finally scanned the ultrasound pictures and added a new tab for Baby Boy Sullivan. I didn't put the picture of his "stuff" up on the main page, but it is on his tab.
Also, Abby's school pictures came in. Grandparents your copies are on their way to you.
Well, I did it!! I made the 4 hour trek to middle TN alone with Abby!!! She was great! It didn't hurt that Sean got us a portable DVD player so she could watch Shrek in the car- which she did twice on the way down and twice on the way back. We stopped at a rest stop on the way down. Abby was such a good girl. She held my hand the whole time. I was worried, but we did it. We walked around for a while and looked at all the dogs that people bring with them on trips. Also, there were a few horse trailers in the back, so we got to see some "horsies."
The trip was nice, but we cut it a little short. My allergies about killed me!!! I actually had to take benadryl every six hours. And even then, it was horrible. Abby did really well with all the new people- she met my uncle Ron and aunt Sandy, aunt Carol, and was re-introduced to uncle Carney, aunt Vicky, and cousin Jamie. We played a lot with my brothers and of course, the grandparents. But by Sunday night, she was done. So we came home a day early.
(Note- the pictures above are from when uncle Justin took us to feed the geese. That was an experience! They were chasing us when we had bread, but would run from us when we didn't! Fickle little birds!)
Since I had already told Goddard that we wouldn't be at school on Tuesday, I decided to take Abby to the aquarium with aunt Desi. Again, she was such a good girl! But next time I will call first to see if there are any school groups attending. There were at least two school groups there with WILD children running and screaming all over the place. And these were middle school age kids! I don't know where the chaperones were, but they weren't doing their job!!!
And last but not least- IT'S A BOY!!!!! We are so excited. This is the last kid for us, so I am really happy that we will have one of each. Everything looks good. He's around the 60% from what they can tell. Spine, heart, kidneys all look good. I will try to scan the ultrasound pictures soon.
We went to the zoo on Sunday since it was going to be nice. It turned out rather cool, so I'm glad we took Abby's sweatshirt. There were a ton of people there. The construction that they were doing last year paid off. The place looks really nice with a brand new entrance that is much easier and waayyy prettier. We went ahead and got season passes so we can go whenever we like. Which is good since Abby was wiped out and a little cranky by 1:00, her normal nap time. It makes leaving all the easier when you know that you can still get your money's worth. She really liked the giraffe's. We had to go back for a 2nd look!!!
There were tons of people, but the thing that got me all worked up was a woman in the small two stall, one changing station restroom in the children's zoo section who went into a stall and started smoking!!!! SMOKING IN THE GIRLS ROOM!!! The whole zoo is smoke free with signs everwhere!!! Was she so desperate that she had to have one in the smallest enclosed area with kids around?!?!?!?! Did she think no one would notice? It was just nuts!
Whew! But anyway..we did have fun after all.
In other news, Abby has been driving Sean and I nuts with the "Muppets" thing. She always wants to watch the Muppets. Always. And we have 3 seasons, but we have seen EVERY episode a million times. She also asks for WALL-E, but that's not the movie mommy can watch every night. Don't get me wrong- it's a great movie for a kid who can't understand all the social and environmental messages. But for me, it is too much to handle on a daily basis. I've been trying other animated shows/movies like Sleeping Beauty, Toy Story, etc. But we finally found one that she likes- Shrek. Now she asks for "Shrek". This has only been going on about a week, so ask me again in a few more weeks if I can tolerate Shrek. Thankfully, Grammy sent an Abby and Elmo in Wonderland movie which we have watched 6 times since Saturday! And we (meaning Abby) don't watch ANY movie entirely. She gets bored after a while and goes off to play. But don't turn it off!!! She likes the option of stopping what she's doing to go back to watching whenever she likes. Oh boy!
Abby is proving to be quite the little girl. She really likes going shopping with Mommy. She will even clean up all her toys so she can go with me. We don't do anything more than go to Target and Kroger, but she loves getting out. "Shopping!" She even asked if we could go shopping tonight. OH BOY!
And finally, I go back to have an ultrasound on Thursday to determine (hopefully) the gender of the baby.
I had my 20 week appt. on Friday. Dr. said that everything looked good. I had only gained 3 pounds, but I figure that canceled out the 3 I lost last time. Blood pressure was good, heartbeat was good, and I measured right on the money. So, I get to go back in 2 weeks for an ultrasound and then in a month for my next appt. I have to register at the hospital soon, which seems kinda early. But they said by week 24, so....
We've had a good weekend. Nice weather. Abby and I went out shopping yesterday while daddy was doing some plumbing. He's begining to get the basement ready to finish. So, he's trying to do the plumbing for the 1/2 bath. (AKA a new sink and new toilet.) I figured that was my Mother's Day present, but he actually suprised me with flowers, a gift card and a card. The card was one of my favorites- it even got space on this website! (If you can't read it, he signs it "Sorry! I know it will be a while before you can have one.") Abby got me a card and made me a bookmark at school! I have a great family!!!!
My manager and I decided on a separation date of June 12. That will give me apx 9 weeks of training my replacement. He is catching on quickly, so I am not sure if I will need to stay until then. This is an extension that my upper management and HR negotiated since the separation date for most of the other folks is May 8. Anyway, I am begining my summer prep work and look forward to not having to get dressed up during the summer!
I go back to the Dr. on Friday for my monthly check-up. I will have to schedule an apt. with the ultrasound tech in the next few weeks to find out the gender of the baby. I think Sean will find out with me this time. I saved a ton of Abby's stuff that was gender neutral from birth to 6 months. After that, I saved pretty much everthing! So, we need to begin going thru all of that and either wash it, or give the girl stuff away. (I'm still hoping for a boy. Sean says he's re-enlisting if it is a girl!!!)
Sean got himself a small Ford Ranger with his bonus money. It's not the Toyota Tundra that he originally wanted. But this one is paid for and will haul stuff just as well. I'm glad we have something to take to IKEA!!! But Sean will have to drive it. It is a manual transmission. I learned on that waaaayyy back in the day, but haven't driven one since. So, Sean will have to suck it up and go to IKEA with me. It's only a two-seater, so Abby can't go with.
I forgot to mention in the previous posting that my brother, Justin, came up to visit a couple of weekends ago. We had a blast!! We didn't do anything exciting. It was just nice to chill. Abby and he played the entire weekend. She keeps asking where Justy is. I cannot for the life of me get her to say Justin- it comes out "Justy." But then again, she can't say swing either. It comes out "swink."
And finally, Abby got her toenails painted for the first time this weekend. I don't think Sean was too happy about that, but it is a really light pinish-orange. Not too dark at all. She's such a girl!
New pictures of Abby playing dress up have been added! Including a shot of her newly painted toes! Check out the gloves!
We've had some weird weather- cold one day and beautiful the next. Then back to cold and rainy. But this past weekend was amazing- 83 and breezy!
We went to the Goddard family picnic over the weekend where we played and played! I held a friend's 5 month old while we were there. Abby loves the baby and didn't seem jealous at all while I held her. Granted, she had a bag of chips which she doesn't get to eat often and she was right next to me. Still, I am hoping that she's not too bad when the new baby gets here. (BTW- I am WAAAAYYYY out of practice!
Abby is loving school. We recently found out that she can count to 13 (I think this is due to the fact that we've been counting out 13 steps for the last two years). She doesn't really know what the numbers are, but she knows the difference between numbers and letters.
I decided to take the buy-out at work. My last day will be June 12. I plan on keeping Abby in school 2 days as week thru the summer and then go to 3 days in September in preparation for the new baby. I just couldn't imagine taking her out of school. She loves her teachers and her friends there. Plus, that will give me some time to go to the Dr. and do some prep for baby #2 (like cleaning out his/her room!!!!).
We have lots planned for the summer including a trip to TN to see aunts and uncles that haven't met Abby yet. (I know! We're rotten, aren't we?) Trips to the aquarium, zoo, museum center, and most of all- aunt Desi's pool!!! I figure the floating will be good for me, too.
It will take some adjusting, but hopefully I will get used to life without a paying job. This is the only opportunity that I will have like this, so I'm gonna take it! (I may need some moral support once my separation money runs out, though.)
It seems like I just don't have any time anymore. So, the updates will have to be what they are....late!
Abby had her 2 year check-up: No shots, 50% for weight and height, no autism (I could have told them that!), and pretty much normal. I didn't write any stats down. It was not one of our best trips ever. First of all, I was running late. I tried to get one of the latest apts possible so I wouldn't have to miss too much work. But you know how it is when you're trying to leave work...everyone wants something RIGHT THEN!!! When I picked her up, they were having snack time. Luckily, they just poured some of the crackers into a cup and sent them with us. They said she had just been changed so she should be fine for a while. We got to the Dr. right on time. But guess what?!?!?!? Little miss thing took a big ole' dump!!!! And guess who forgot to bring the diaper bag in since we were in such a rush? And of course they don't keep diapers or wipes, so I had to improvise. And since you aren't allowed to throw anything in their trash, I got to carry around a little plastic bag of pooh until we got home!!! AAAARRRGGHHH! But that's not all....the nurse came in and did all the prelim stuff, we got Abby undressed...and then we waited. FOR 30 MINUTES!!!! Ever try to keep a naked, stinky 2 year old occupied with no toys for 30 minutes? We did it, but oh boy!!! Apparently one of the other doctors was out sick. It was all ok, but jeez!
I go back to the OB on Friday. I am at 15 weeks now, so we're well into 2nd trimester!
Abby and I had a "first" for both of us yesterday- our first Rugby game. My friend Desi's boyfriend (Scott) plays on a real Rugby team and they were playing locally yesterday. So, Abby and I stopped in for a few! The day started off kinda cool, but it warmed up as the day went on. And it was sunny, so we were fine. We got to the game late and ended up leaving early. There were a lot of kids there for Abby to play with. One of Scott's friends has two kids who are 3 and 4. The 4 year old, Trevor, was trying to teach Abby how to play soccer. It was too cute! He was so patient with her! But all the kids kept wanting to climb up and down the bleachers. I know I am an over-protective parent, but several flights of metal bleachers would hurt. Abby just wouldn't listen, not to mention we missed her nap. So, we ducked out. But when we left, Scott's team was winning!
There are no new pictures, but we'll have some soon.
Abby had a wonderful birthday. She was still getting over a cold, so we didn't go anywhere. Not to mention, I had bronchitis and it was still kinda cold and rainy. We will more than make up for it this summer. She made out like a bandit with all her toys, clothes, and fun stuff! Thanks to Karen for the bag of goodies!! She loves the flash cards and keeps putting things into and out of the purse. We kept finding things we didn't know were in there!!! And thanks to Ian and Megan for all the cool stuff like playdoh and some cool summer clothes. Grammy and Pop Pop sent a ton of goodies: a movie, clothes, and WAL-E and EVE stuffed robots!!! Grandma and Papa Perrigo brought a doctor's kit (she'll give you shot if you sit still long enoough!!!) and a Barbie. Sean got a gift all on his very own- and what a gift!!! It is one of those Step 2 play kitchens. This has a pump that pumps water from the bottom of the sink out the faucet!!! Anyone who has ever played with a 2-year-old knows how much they love water. Add that to the fact that this is more of an outside toy makes this a slam-dunk!!!! I have to drag Abby away from it. It came with all sorts of dishes and water-type accessories. (Pictures are on the pictures page under "Birthday".)
I have also been trying to load up on outside stuff to do for her. Just yesterday I got her a lawn mower that blows bubbles and a bouncy thing. She also loves the chalk that Karen got her, but since that gets messy, we use it mainly outside too. We still have the sand and kiddie pool from last year, but any suggestions for keeping a 2-year-old busy outside would be well appreciated.
She has been playing a lot with the little boys in our cul-de-sac. Cole is 2 1/2 and is destined to be a race car driver. As I am sure I have mentioned before- this kid can drive better than me! He was out with his John Dere the other day and it has a bench seat so two can ride. Abby really wanted on. Cole's dad (also a Sean) made him let her ride. Cole is a good kid. He just kinda looked at his dad like, "Do I have to? She's a girl! So Abby rode around with Cole for like 30-45 minutes. He would pat on the seat and she'd hop in and hold on!!! This is all OK for now, but when he's 16, I may not feel the same about this situation! Sorry, no pictures of this. I'll try next time!
Well, I had my first appt. with the OB doctor yesterday. Everything looks fine. Heartbeat is good, blood pressure is good (can't believe that with all the stress here lately!), and size is good (I even lost 3 pounds!). I'll try to keep this updated for everyone. I said TRY.
Abby has been a handfull here lately. She is still refusing to sleep thru the night. This HAS to change before the baby arrives!! She has been sick with a fever and coughing. She might have a sore throat and ear infection, but she can't tell me so I don't really know. I don't think it is bad enough to take her to the Dr. BUt she is still really doing well in school and is excited about the weather warming up. (So am I!!!)
My parents are coming into town for the weekend to celebrate Abby's 2-yr birthday a little early. Her B-day isn't until the 18th. We aren't really having a party. I can't bear to think that I would have to clean the house. Not now. I'll post some pictures of the fun. (There will still be presents and cake and probably a friend or two of mine.)
In other news, my employer is offering a buy-out for employees to leave. On one hand, this is really bad timing for me. On the other hand, it is really good timing for me. The fear is that the automotive industry will continue to nosedive and they will let people go anyway. This may be a blessing in disguise. I have a few weeks to decide (with Sean's input, of course!). But this is a big decision. I haven't been without work since right after I got married and moved up here. It is a scary situation especially with the economy and me being pregnant. I probably wouldn't go back to work until next year- that's IF I can find a job. So...lots to think about and calculate. Any thoughts or advise will be greatly appreciated.
It has been way too long since the last post. Luckily, the snow left. It is still cold, but I'm hoping that spring is just around the corner.
My parents came up for Valentine's weekend. It was nice to see them, but they also babysat so Sean and I could go out to dinner. It was really nice.
They also brought with them some of Abby's Christmas presents from Uncle Justin and Aunt Layla. Abby has been having a blast with the lifesize Barbie.
In other news, we're having baby #2. I didn't figure out I was pregnant until about 8 weeks into it. But we seem to be doing fine now. I am 10 weeks now. I'll try to do better about keeping this updated, but I am not making any promises.
Tuesday we got snow. Then Wednesday we got more snow. There was apx. 6 inches in our front yard when it began to rain. Well, sleet really. That added about 3/4 to 1 inch of ice on top of the snow. Then guess what? It snowed some more. Another 4 inches on top of all of that!!!! CRAZY! Needless to say, we didn't go to work. Luckily, we had power the whole time and had the car in the garage. And have I mentioned that I love my husband?!?!?! A few years ago he got a small snow blower. It came in really handy this week.
So, Abby got to play in the snow for a while. Since we don't get this kind of weather all the time, I didn't have a snow suit for her. But we bundled her up really well. She enjoyed playing in the snow!!! And she had to have the blinds open on one of the windows just so she could watch it snowing.
Also, I started a list of words and phrases that she knows and uses, but that list is growing every day. And she knows words that we didn't know that she knew. For example today she and Sean were watching a PBS painting show (don't ask, I don't know why). She looked at the TV and said, "art." OK. That's not a word that we use everyday. Apparently she said this several times. I missed this whole thing since I was taking a shower. She's also learning the ABC song. She likes to sing it over and over and over. She gets some of the letters and the final, "now I know my ABC's..." part. I know, I know...she doesn't really know her alphabet. But it is still cute.
No, we didn't go to for the inauguration. But in honor of the day, I posted some old photos from one of my several trips to D.C. (For those who don't know- I absolutely LOVE D.C.!!!! I want to go back. I want to take all my friends who have never been!!!)
Yesterday's inauguration was amazing. To be perfectly honest, I had never watched one before. But yesterday several of us gathered in the breakroom at work to watch. It was interesting to see the lack of respect in general. Granted, it was lunch time, but I was taught to be silent during prayers, etc. On the other hand, there were several who actually stood up at the appropriate moment. There were not as many people who stopped to watch, but I was riveted.
I know I am a bit emotional anyway, and the media played this up like you wouldn't believe. But I had to put myself in someone else's shoes for the moment to see that it really was a momentous occasion. So, like the new President, I am hopeful. Hopeful that the citizens of the United States of America take their heads out of their behinds and get back to work, hopeful that they listen to what he had to say and take it to heart, and hopeful that we realize what a wonderful country we live in - and that we should strive to keep it that way!
OK, so off my soapbox! Abby update: Mommy update:
Well, Sean and I are both back to work now. I didn't have to go back until the 8th. It was nice to have that time off and not have anywhere to be. I didn't get all the cleaning done that I would have liked, but I got to spend lots of quality time with my husband and daughter. Good trade, I think!
I discovered that Abby is really much better when we stick to her schedule. Having that much time away from school was... interesting. They have a schedule that they stick to. We didn't. So by the time she went back, she was 1-2 hours off her normal routine. It was also interesting trying to keep her busy. We discovered that the little area of our living room/dining room was not enough for her. So there were lots of trips out and about where she walked almost everywhere herself (just not in parking lots- not yet). We went to the aquarium, took walks with her new doll stroller, went to Target, Kroger, etc.
She's also spending more time with the dogs. When she wants to play with them, she says "in" and we let them into the living area. Most of the time they are upstairs asleep on our bed! She's learning to be gentle with them, give them love (aka hugs), and ask for "kisses." Luna gives her kisses and Sophie gets the love. Its also interesting (and scary) that she's picking up things we tell the dogs. I've forever telling them to "move" or "go" and this morning she repeated that in the same exact tone of voice I use.
And those who know me know that "Jaws" is one of my favorite moves of all time. I can watch it any time, any day. Well, last night Sean and Abby recreated a scene from "Jaws." In the movie, Chief Brody (no relation to Adam...lol) was sitting at the dinner table after a rough day. His 4 or 5 year old son was also at the table and began to copy what his dad was doing with his hands. It is a very touching moment. (If you don't know this scene, watch the movie again! It is just too cute!) So last night at the dinner table, Abby started doing the same thing with Sean. Of course he's seen the movie too, so he basically did the same thing that Chief Broday did. And Abby played right along! It was amazing to watch! Fun age! We're learning a lot from this little girl!
I have great hopes for 2009. It has been an interesting 2008, and I am thankful for many things. Let's all try to stay positive in the upcoming months. (Mind over matter!)
A few Abby updates:
Anyway, hope you all have a wonderful, happy, safe, and prosperous new year!
Thank you to all who contributed to such a wonderful Christmas! We had a very nice Christmas and hope everyone else did, too. Since Abby is still too young to be excited about Christmas morning, we were able to sleep in and even have breakfast before attempting to open any gifts. I don't even think we started until around 10:00 am! Sean and I have had to learn that Abby is very much her own person. She opened the first present and was done! All she wanted to do was play with it. If we even tried to get her to open anything else, she got mad. So Sean and I opened ours. I think her last gift was opened around 2:30 or so. Some I just opened for her. She didn't miss it. She got some really cool stuff: a doll house, tea set, toy guitar, tiny keyboard, race car, doll + clothes + stroller, and some additional accessories. She loves her doll house which she calles "house" and we've already had "tea" several times. And she really likes her stroller. The one in the picture above was el-cheapo and broke yesterday. So, I have replaced it with a newer, more sturdy one (not pictured, yet).
Abby is feeling better, but has pretty much refused to eat anything of substance. She will still eat cheese, yogurt, and cresent rolls, but not much else. Oh well. We're learning.
And we said goodbye to the Christmas tree this afternoon. It served us well. (But to be honest-I am really happy to have that space back!)
It has been an interesting 48 hrs! First of all, the Northern KY/Cincinatti area got hit with some really cold weather on Sunday and Monday, but then it warmed up on Tuesday enough to rain. The rain froze on the roads, bridges, and overpasses just in time for people to begin their trips or rides home. What normally takes 20-30 minutes took me over 2 hours!!! It was a mess. Luckily, Sean and I made it home safe and sound. (Not everyone did, though.)
When I was letting the dogs in this morning (and noticing that it was much, much warmer!), I saw a rather tall bird out by the pond. Sean thinks it was an egret. Those are not native to this area. But he said that they had them back in California. So maybe the bird came in from California just to bring some West Coast to him since he is missing home this time of year! (Picture above.)
Abby was still coughing so much last night that she threw up again, so we decided to take her to the doctor this morning. Thank goodness they were in!! So, he examined her and determined that it was probably just a cold and that it hadn't moved into her lungs. But to be safe, he did a swab of her throat. Well, of course that made her mad. Those things are like 12 inches long!!! Once I stood her up, though, she threw up. And not on herself- all over ME!!! Oh the joys of parenting. I never thought that kind of thing would be OK with me. But I guess it's something that changes when you have a child. Luckily, I got most of it cleaned up and the nurse helped with the rest. The doctor and Sean were ...how shall I put it? More "affected" by the smell. They both had to stand outside the room. I hate that I almost made the doctor sick. He's our favorite doctor too! Oh well!! I'm sure he has seen worse. Luckily, I had taken off the sweatshirt that I was using as a jacket. So I did a quick change while we waited for the strep culture to process. Good news- no strep! We did get another round of medicine. This time it is bubble gum flavored. She likes that better than the orange flavored stuff that we got last time.
By the time we got home from Target (to get the prescription filled) and the grocery store
(for the rest of the Christmas dinner fixins), it was almost noon. I just figured that she would need a new diaper. But when I went to change her, it was dry! So, I put her on her potty and guess what?!!?!? She went in her potty!!! First time!!! I was so excited!!! Big day! She hasn't done it since. But now I know that she knows what to do. We're not going to force it since she is still kinda young.
After a rather fitfull nap in the rocking chair with both Sean and myself (not at the same time, mind you), aunt Desi stopped by with her Christmas present for Abby. Abby was a little hesitant to open it since we've been stopping her for the last few weeks about opening the presents under the tree. But she got into it and eventually got it all unwrapped. She really liked the big silver bow! Aunt Desi did a great job picking out a present! She got a wooden doll clothes closet/vanity. Abby is getting to that age where she loves her dolls, so this was great! Plus, she really likes taking things out and then putting them back. I'll take some pictures tomorrow with the rest of the Christmas presents!!!
It is currently 8:38 pm and 7 degrees outside. I don't know about you, but I think that is cold. I'm sure Kate is thinking that sounds warm. We also have 15 mph winds that bring that down to the negative something-or-other for windchill. Yuck!
On top of that, Abby has a nasty cough and a low fever. She's doing OK, but the cough sounds horrible. We just have to get thru Monday and Tuesday...two days, baby...and then we can stay home and cuddle until you feel better!
Also, it is becoming apparent that our child is growing up right before our eyes. One thing I failed to mention in the previous post is her new ability to answer us "yes" or "no." If you ask her a yes/no question, she will answer you. For the most part she knows what she's saying. We've tricked her a few times, but usually she knows. This is amazing! We're able to have pseudo conversations with her! And she's proved she is one of the more intelligent mammals by using tools to help her reach a goal. Today she used the empty roll for wrapping paper to 1) turn on a light switch, and 2) try to lift a wreath off the door.
And finally, she made me laugh so hard today that I cried. Sean is probably ready to kill me, but I've sort-of taught her the line "Ice, Ice, Baby." For those of you who may not remember, that was a song by Vanilla Ice back in 1991 or so. It is just one of those songs from the 90's that is sooo bad, and yet you remember every line! I don't remember why I started singing it, but she picked it right up. Like I said, I laughed so hard I had a hard time catching my breath.
Time seems to just keep flying by. So, here are a few updates about our world:
Friday when we picked Abby up from pre-school, there was an envelope in our mail cubby. I wasn't prepared for what the letter inside said. Abby is moving up to the next class, Toddler 1. They will be transitioning her over the next few weeks. I was happy and sad all at the same time! It's great that she's improving and yet it kinda freaks me out that she's growing up so fast!!! I'll keep ya posted on the move.
We did get our Christmas decorating done (for the most part) over the weekend. Abby loves the "balls" on the tree. I haven't put any of the presents out yet, but that may require the baby gate. We'll see what happens.
Check out TJ and Stacey's website!!!! They have a new baby girl, Payton!!!! YEAH!!!!
And check out Karen's website- they have a new house!!! Wow!!!
OK, so we don't have a tree up yet. Hope to get one this weekend 'cause little miss thing loves lights! Sean put up the dangly outside lights last weekend. They are on a timer, so when we get home, they are on (it's already dark when we get home now). Well, it is nearly impossible to get Abby in the house now! She keeps pointing and saying, "lights....lights.....lights." We can't even go upstairs for bathtime since the stairs start right by the front door and she can see the lights from there. So we have to stop to see the lights, then we have a fit when mommy takes her away (forcibly). At some point last night she woke up with what I thought was a bad dream. When I opened her door, she screemed like I scared her. Then she kept pointing to the door. I picked her up and she still kept pointing to the door and screeming something. I took her into the hall and she kept pointing. She was saying something, but in my half-asleep stupor, I didn't realize what. Until we got to the top of the stairs and she pointed downstairs and said, "LIGHTS!" I had to take her to the window to show her that the lights were off!!!! She did finally calm down, but I was actually worried that she had heard something or had a REALLY bad dream 'cause she was screeming and frantic. OK, so now we know. She likes lights.
And a few notes on the pictures above (until I can get some new Abby photos-sorry)
L- Mom and dad back in the 70's. Cute, huh?
M- A photo that my great grandmother had made when my grandfather got out of boot camp(?) Not too sure because there are more from that same sitting with one of his sisters and brother-in-law.
R- My grandfather back in the 60's or 70's on a camel in Egypt. (See the pyramid?)
Happy Thanksgiving to all! We all have so much to be thankful for. I'm thankful for (not in any specific order): my wonderful husband, healthy little girl, a wonderful family that grows each year, parents who taught me how to live a responsible life, cheesecake, safety, true friends, my education, the life that I lived before I "settled down", the life that I live now that I have "settled down", my job, an understanding boss, the ABILITY to work, the FREEDOM to work, and all the men and women throughout history who have made sacrifices to ensure our freedom, and so much more that words can't even describe.
So please take a moment to think of all the things (great or small) that you are thankful for. Please remember those who are not with their friends or family while they serve our country. Pray that they all come home safely. Pray for our leaders to have strength, integrity and guidance.
And a few notes about the pictures above (from left to right): The Calvin Perrigo family circa 1952 (my dad's family), my brothers (Justin and Alex), and my mom and her twin brother. Just thought some old pics would be kinda neat to share.
OK, so Abby has a little friend at school. Her name is Kiki (I know!) and so all we hear is "babble, babble, babble, Kiki, babble, babble." ALL NIGHT LONG! It's really cute. Like she's telling us what she did today with Kiki.
Unfortunately, she's sick. All last week her nose was running. Sean and I thought we were getting something, but we've been able to take some Zicam and pretty much stop it. I don't think she's too bad during the day because they haven't called us to come get her, but night time is no fun. And tonight her voice was all crackly and hoarse. Poor thing. No fever, though. That's good. So we raised her bed (pillow under one end) to help her breathe, vicks vapor rub and bath stuff, and a vaporizor. Hopefully she will feel better soon. I hate to see her sick. She went to bed EARLY tonight. Almost an hour early.
Also, Happy Birthday to: My dad, Steve and his twin brother, Richard as well as one of our groomsmen- TJ.
An update on Andrea Grace- She's doing well, but will be in the hospital for a while. They sent pictures, but I didn't know if they would want me to post them. So, I will wait until I get the OK. Just keep praying that she and her mom make a speedy recovery.
Well, I tried to add a post on Sunday. I had it all written and then messed it up by hitting some unknown combination of keys. Gone. Just like that! At that point, I was too frustrated to try to re-write it. So, I gave up.
Here are a few updates since it has been forever since writing a real entry.
Just a few more days until Thanksgiving and then-WHAMMO- it will be Christmas! I think we're getting a live tree this year. We'll see how that goes with the dogs. I can just imagine that it will end up like the tree in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation once they drink all the tree water. I'll keep ya posted.
Happy 2nd Birthday to Julia!!!!
Happy Birthday to my cousin, Annie!
I just re-read yesterday's post and realized that I can't spell. Or maybe I just can't type. Anyway, there were several mistakes. Hopefully, I caught them all. Wish this thing had spellcheck!
And another update: Abby did finally realize that her baby gates have been modified. She tried to get under one yesterday and got her foot stuck. I think she's figured out that she won't be escaping that way. Let's hope she doesn't learn to go over!!!
I forgot to mention that Friday night my friend Desi and her boyfriend stopped by to see Abby all dressed up. She brought lots of goodies including a Halloween "My Little Pony" as well as a wand and crown for Abby. Abby didn't get to eat any of the candy, but she sure enjoyed taking it out of the bag and putting it back in! We sure do love the aunt Desi!!!!
Also, we've been trying to get Abby prepared for her trip on Tuesday by talking a lot about seeing Grammy and Pop Pop. So, she's started saying "Pop Pop!!" It's really cute. She's been sitting in her carseat/stroller that will be going on the trip with us, and we've gotten a few things for her to do while on the plane. Last time she wasn't as mobile, so I am a little worried that a 5 hr flight may be pushing it. But we'll see. Unfortunately, we could only get two seats together on any leg of the flights. So some lucky person gets to sit next to us! Bet they will be happy!
And finally, Abby has had a few incidents today..let's just say she got sick. We're not sure what happened, but the carpet cleaner had to come out from hiding. First she got the couch and ottoman, then she got the carpet in the dining room. I hope it was just too much banana or something. She got sick for the first time a couple of weeks ago when I was in TN. Poor Sean! He had to clean it up all by himself! Plus, it was in the middle of the night. I think Abby was scared. It was the first time that had happened. She didn't know what was going on. So goes the joys of being a parent.
I've added some pictures of Abby's first real experience pumpkin carving. Don't worry! Sean did all the real carving, but Abby took out all the "guts." She really got into it.
Also, Abby figured out a few weeks ago how to shimmy under the baby gates and escape. So tonight Sean added a few extra inches of gate. Great job Sean!!! It looks nice and does the trick. She's seen them, but I don't think it registers yet. I'll let you know the outcome.
Well, it is true that you learn to take the good and the bad. Our worlds have had a rough week. I left for Michigan on Monday. I called Sean around 3:00 and found out that Sunday night his grandmother passed away. I felt so bad!! I was so far away from him. I couldn't comfort him! I felt like a horrible wife. Plus I didn't have a way to get home any time soon. I did finally make it home around 6:30 pm on Tuesday. We will be heading out to Washington on Tuesday for the memorial services. This will be the first time that all of her great-grand kids will be together.
Some good news- Monday my sister-in-law, Layla, found out that she was cancer-free. They will do another scan in January. She's planning to go back to work within the next few weeks. Amazing, huh?
And on the Abby front- she's growing up so much each day. She's learning new words and "talking" more. I am amazed by what they can learn in such a short amount of time. Watch out world!
So, the trip to Jackson, TN wasn't too bad. I was able to stop in Nashville (Gallatin) and have lunch with my Mom, Dad and Brother (Alex). I was also able to stop in and see Layla for a while. She's looking good!!! My meeting on Thursday didn't last as long as expected, so I ended up driving back to Gallatin that night. Luckily, I was able to see a few of my friends while in town. It's a good thing that I headed that way early, because by Friday, we had rain. Lots and lots of rain. What usually takes 4 to 4.5 hours turned into 6!!!! There were times when I didn't get over 60 mph. And that was probably pushing it. But, I made it back. Now I'm just trying to get everything cleaned up for my next trip on Monday. It will just be one night, but sometimes that worse. This time I'm heading up to Michigan.
I posted a few new photos of Abby. Enjoy!
Well, thankfully, my parents came up on Friday. I had an apt. at the vet first thing Saturday morning for both dogs. It would have been impossible with two roudy dogs and Abby! So we played with the fun bouncy ball that looks like a pumpkin that grandma got her and went to Target. We got a cute dress (I'll post pictures when I can) for picture day at pre-school which was yesterday. I know! Can you believe it?!?!?!? Already! But she was adorable. I think they do some Christmas poses which is nice. The very ironic thing is that the picture company is based out of Gallatin, TN!!!!! (My hometown.) It is a small world.
I also got Abby a tutu skirt. My thoughts were that she can be a balerina for Halloween. I am so NOT very creative anymore! Oh well. She is way too cute in the little pink skirt, but it may be too cold for her to actually trick or treat in it. We'll see.
After picking Abby up from pre-school yesterday, we stopped by Borders bookstore so I could look for a book on CD since I have 14 hours of driving ahead of me. OK, so I think this may have been Abby's first time in a bookstore. And for those of you who know her...she LOVES, LOVES, LOVES her books. She went crazy!!! Needsless to say, she came out of there with a book and I barely got to look for a book on CD. But I got a Steven King ("The Mist"?) that was on clearance. Only problem- it's only 72 minutes long. That won't get me too far. Oh well.
We ended up getting Sean around 7:00 pm and heading home. When we got there, Abby had a package. Another truck!!!!! This one had a cow and a horse that were carried in the back. And this one makes sounds! (Thanks Grammy!!!) She loved it!!! And she loved the Moose that Sean's mom sent back with him from Washington.
Sean got to meet his brother's daughter who is around three (maybe) while he was out there. It was good for him to be with his family for a while. His grandmother is now in a rehab facility trying to work on getting home.
And finally, I am getting ready to head down to west TN for the next few days. I plan on stopping in Nashville area to see some family on my way which will break up the 7 hour drive. After all this travel, I have to say that I may be on strike for a while. I have to travel overnight one night next week, too. I can't believe it's Halloween already. Then it will be November, which means Thanksgiving, which means Christmas is around the corner!!!!
After reading my post from this morning, I thought I would clarify a few things. (That's what you get when you try to write at 6:00 am!!!!)
So, I made it back. Only one glitch: I left my laptop's power cord!!!! Hopefully they find it and can get it back to me. And I'm done traveling until Tuesday. Now....some sleep sounds really nice!
This working mom thing is not as easy as I imagined. Well, nothing about parenting is, really. I spent apx 5 hours on the road yesterday and will be doing it again today. There are meetings down in Harrodsburg, KY (out in the middle of nowhere, I might add) all week. Well, most people drove down on Sunday and are staying in a hotel all week. I can't do that. I guess I could- but I'm not. First reason: I would miss my baby, second reason: Sean's leaving on Thursday, so those days are out (I really shouldn't be that far from home in case something happens and I need to pick Abby up.) and third reason: I will be gone 4 days next week traveling to Jackson, TN (about 7 hours away). That is just too much time to be gone. It's bad enough that Sean gets back on Monday and I leave on Tuesday. So we only have that one night to catch up, and then I'm gone. Poor Abby! I'm sure she won't even understand. But this sucks!!! Oh well. Its just bad timing. We won't be doing this all the time. I hope.
There are several people that need your thoughts and prayers. 1) One of my local friend's daughter just had spinal surgery at Children's yesterday for a serious case of scoliosis. I will post her carepage link. 2) My friend, Trudy, back in TN has a relative of her husband's (cousin?) who has a form of eye cancer, retinoblastoma. I will post her link, too. For allyou parents out there- this is really sad and scary. But it is good information to know that this exists and what to look for. 3) My cousin, Annie, has been admitted to the hospital. She is several months pregnant (due in January?) and they want the baby to gain more weight. They want her to stay in for 3 weeks!!!! And finally, 4) Layla (my sister-in-law) sent us an update. She went to the oncologist yesterday. Here's her e-mail (so I don't get any info wrong):
I had my first appointment with my Onocologist today. She is getting me a scan on Friday along with a painful bone scan. I will get a needle to inject ink into my bones. Then on the 27th I will meet with her again and find out the results of the scans. The good news is she is talking like if there is no trace of cancer anywhere else then I will not have to go through chemo. My case is one of a kind. They said this strange cancer that I have only comes along once every 5-10 years. She is going to take my case to the cancer board. That way all the Vanderbilt Dr.'s can give their advice on how to treat it. Its so rare. She said it wasn't anything that I did, it was genetic. Also, she believes it started in my bile-ducts. There was cancer in my liver, bile-ducts but none in my gallbladder. The cool thing is my cancer is on display for all the students @ Vandy who are studying this sort of thing.
In an effort to avoid another migraine, I went to they eye doctor on Friday. I go back this week to check my prescription. Looks like I will be getting some glasses. I don't think I need anything too strong, but I think it will help with eye strain. I work all day on a regular 17 inch laptop (no monitor) that is like 2 feet away (not to mention that I'm gettin older and BOTH of my parents wear glasses). So, we'll see if that helps any.
Abby and I went to Ikea on Saturday. I wanted to get out of the house while daddy worked on putting up crown molding in the living room to hide the wires for our surround sound. (It looks so nice!!!) While we were there, we picked up some really cool stuff- little metal pots and pans, little plastic utinsils, and a little wooden train set. It is too cute!!! But there were 5 million people there. it took about 30 minutes to check out. It was crazy!!! And I thought I got there kinda early. Apparently, they had a Columbus Day sale and had offered a free breakfast from 9:00 - 10:30. Little did I know!
Afterward, Abby and I went to an open house at work. Our CEO, Furuta-san was there as was his boss, Dr. Toyoda (the namesake). Don't ask me why it is a D instead of T. All I know is that the D is the original spelling. It was nice to see them smoozing with all us peons. There were a lot of people there with the spouses and children. Abby got to play with some of her little boyfriends. Too cute! I didn't take my camera, but there were plenty of photos taken. If I can get some, I will post them. Abby was wearing the cutest little dress that Sean's mom got her.
Sean finished the crown molding today and then sat down to watch some football with his little girl. Those photos are on the pictures page. Notice the matching jerseys? I didn't get all the laundry done, but oh well. We had a busy weekend anyway.
Sean goes to Washington on Thursday. Thankfully, my parents will be in on Friday to help out. I have to take the dogs in for their shots on Saturday. It would be close to impossible to wrangle both dogs and Abby on a very, VERY busy street. Thank God for grandparents!!!!
So...let's see...what's happened since last post? 1) Sean's back from NY (YEAH!!!!), 2) fall weather (love the leaves), 3) leaky roof (thanks, Ike!), 4) stupid doctors (see Kate's blog for further explaination), 5) migraines (and therefore, more doctors-this time for me), and 6) new toys for Abby.
1) Abby and I made it thru the week with Daddy in NY. And he didn't even bring us back any Antonella's!!!!! How dare he?!?!?!?
2) The leaves are turning and falling here marking a true change in the weather. So, the blankets have come out of hiding.
3) Sean noticed when we got home today that there is a leak at the pinacle of our roof where the siding (now missing) beat the crap out of it. So, he was up on our already-wet-from-the-rain-today roof nailing a tarp to it to reduce the damage while we wait for insurance and repairman availability. Right now, there's like a 3 month wait!!!! But it's not too bad, really. No major damage.
4) Sean's grandmother was doing better, but then the medical professionals got to her and fixed that. I know that sounds horrible- but it seems like they are trying to....well....ya know! So, Sean is flying out next week to visit for a long weekend. Don't worry! I won't let him take any of his firearms! Kate's post will explain better what's going on. (But please pray that she has a speedy recovery!)
5) Migraines. The word itself is painful. I used to get them all the time. I started taking topomax for them but had to stop taking it when I decided to get pregnant. Luckily, I haven't had one since getting pregnant. Well that changed on Monday morning. Not sure what caused it, but it woke me up from my sleep around 5:00 am. I mean...it knocked me on my butt!!!! I haven't had one that bad-ever. And since I am a glutton for punishment, I tried to go to work. That lasted until 3:00 pm when I asked Sean to take me home. This is after 2 Excederine Migraine doses and a chiropractor adjustment. I was trying anything! Sleep didn't even help! The pain was at the base of my skull. When I would stand up, it would throb with each heartbeat and make me dizzy. So, I went to the doctor yesterday when it still wasn't gone to make sure it wasn't something worse. And guess what he says? Yep. It's a migraine. Thanks. Here's by co-pay. But he did give me some samples of a migraine medicine (and a script for them if they work) to take when one comes on. It's not an everyday pill. Only when needed. And he said that if I get another migraine within the next couple of weeks or so, to come back in. They would do an MRI to make sure it wasn't something else. But everything else looked fine. So, $10 well spent.
6) And finally- I have looked all over for some dump trucks like Jack has. Not sure where they got theirs. I've looked at Wal-Mart (yes, I know....I actually went to the most evil of stores in search of a dump truck!), Target, and Toys R Us. They have dump trucks, but they are the big metal ones that are for older kids to actually move dirt. I did find a little wagon that she can push around. It has jumbo lego's in it which she likes, too. So that will have to do for now. I'll try to take some pictures soon.
I just don't seem to find the time anymore to post! So when I do, they're looonnnngggg. Sorry!
So...the weather here is definately feeling more like fall. The leaves are changing, and it's supposed to get down to 45 degrees tonight. We'll have to bring all the plants in soon (the ones that are left after my neglect, hurricane Ike, etc.). I love fall!!!
My-oh-my! It has been a long time since my last post. So this one will probably be big. Apologies!
Other Updates:
I'm going to apologize in advance for the long post, but here's a recap of the last 5 day's events:
We made it thru another week. Abby is doing so much better with pre-school drop off. I think she has figured this out now. We try to make it as brief as possible. I'm doing better about planning. We've been trying to make Abby's lunch with the previous night's left-overs. And like all of us, she can only take so much. We had meatloaf two nights, which meant that Abby had it for 4 meals in a row! She ate it all for the lunch the first day, but by lunch the second day...well, let's just say that most of it ended up in the trash. Oh well. We tried.
I can also see that she is learning some new things. It is hard to tell if it is just time for some of these "new things" or if it is from school. But either way, it's kinda cool. First of all, she understands what the trash can is. Sean and I have been very careful about her NOT touching the trash can. It's just that it is not the cleanest thing in our house. l have noticed Abby going to it more frequently now. At first I kept saying, "No. Don't touch. Dirty." But then I realized that she was throwing something away. Real trash. Now I feel like a bad mom for possibly confusing her. So, I think we're going to have to get a small Abby trash can just for her that we keep clean(er) than the others so she can have a place to throw trash away (and for us to make sure that it was really trash).
The other thing that she's doing now is washing her hands. If I'm alone with her, I have to take her to the bathroom with me when I have to go. I sit her on her potty while I go. The potty can be used as a stepstool, so then we wash our hands. (I know...I know....waaaayyy too much info.) They must be doing this at school because she knows how to rub her hands together and dry them off. I know she's seen us do it, and we do wash her hands (of course!). It is amazing (and scrary) to see your child become more independent.
We've been playing more with the neighbor kids. They are mostly boys (at least the ones Abby's age). All the mothers want to have a girl and say how light she is compared to their boys. It was funny to watch them all together. They look at her and flirt while she just wants to be a "big kid" and play on their jungle gym. (I have already planted the seed that we need to start thinking about one.) The neighbors have a really nice wooden swing, fort combo thing that is really cool. Abby loves to swing and just typically be outside, so I see one in our future.
We also went fall clothes shopping today. When I say we, I mean me and Abby. Sean was organizing the garage. Abby is such a tropper. She hung out with me all afternoon. We went to five different stores. Most of her clothes come from either Target or Old Navy. We got a rain jacket, jeans, knit pants, several shirts, long sleeve sleep sets, and some really snazzy shoes. I think we're ready for fall.
And finally, I spoke w/ my sister-in-law yesterday. Her surgery is scheduled for Tuesday. I think she said that is was 5-6 hours and would require a 12 inch incision. She will be at Vanderbilt for 5 days and have an 8 week recovery. They still don't know exactly how much that they will have to remove, but it will be more than half. They also don't know what caused it. They will have to send it to pathology for testing, and then there may be no way to tell. Our whole family asks for your thoughts and prayers for her surgery and recovery.
Well, we got Abby's room done. I've included some pictures. All I can say right now is that the weekends are waaaayyyy too short. I still have the last load of laundry in the dryer, I need to clean up the kitchen, and make all of our lunches for tomorrow. And it's now almost 9:30. I don't know which is worse- going to bed late or getting up early. So...I need to prepare myself for another week. Wish us luck!
One more note: I think my sister-in-law (Layla, Justin's wife) will have surgery on the 16th. They may have to take more of her liver than expected.
11 Days until we see the Sullivan's!!!!
We made it thru. Glad it was a four day week. The first day was ok since there was no crying. But days two and three were tougher. She knew we were leaving her and she made sure we knew it wasn't ok. But once we left, she was fine. And we got better at it, too. It looks like this is actually faster than the other way. Before Sean would drop me off, take Abby, then come back himself. Now, we arrive at work together around 8:00 am. (OK, so more like 8:05 or 8:10, but we're getting better!) He says it makes for a longer day at work. I don't think he likes that. He's ready to go at 4:59 pm!
Friday was a little different. When we dropped her off, there were no tears, but she acted mad. She gave Sean a reluctant high-five and turned away from us. They called me around 9:30 saying she was acting strange- wanting to sleep instead of play, and that she had a low-grade fever. We didn't need to come get her, but they just wanted us to know. I called back around 11:00 to check on her. They said she was up playing and that they hoped eating would help. They were preparing lunch. Oh my! You should have heard all the background noise!!!! I don't know how they do it!!!! That would drive me nuts- especially if they weren't my own kids! I guess the eating helped because they didn't call me back. We left work a little early due to a raging headache on my part (sinuses I think). When we got there, we found out that another child had just (like 10 minutes before we got there) bit Abby. I thought Sean was gonna lose it! They have a form that we have to sign. Like an "incident report" for her files. It didn't name the other child, but I will assume that they will talk to his or her parents. That poor teacher! She looked scared. Like we wouldn't come back. Abby was fine. I didn't worry too much about it since Abby's biting thing several months ago. I guess it is just something that happens. But...whoever bit her did a good job. By the time we got home there was nice set of bite marks. More like a bruise. It has faded over the weekend and now looks more like the teeth scraped her.
And finally, Sean painted her room yesterday. I will take pictures when we're done. I got some new curtains from Ikea that go with her new comforter (which she likes to sleep on TOP of!). We had bought a darker almost red to paint the chair rail. I'm not sure if I like it. BUt it adds some character to the room. It is definately a girl's room now!
I need to start some laundry. We may stop by Adam's this afternoon. He's having a football kick-off party!
Well, we made it! We took her in right at 8:00 am. We had to drop off all sorts of stuff like diapers, wipes, sippies, a change of clothes, sunscreen, an art smock, and lunch. She already had her cubbie with her name on it. Abby did great! I had to put her down so we could put all of the stuff away. By the time we got done, she was already starting to play. So we left without saying goodbye. And that's ok. I was crying and didn't want her to see me upset- just in case it would upset her. They told me I could call and check on her, which I did around 9:30. She was fine. I can't say that we were. It was a rough day for the parents. But we picked her up around 5:30. We looked thru the window to see her playing. When she saw us, though, she dropped what she was playing with and ran to us!!! What a nice way to greet someone!!! They give a daily report of things like what time she napped, how many diapers (and what kind) they changed, what she ate at lunch, and what they learned/played that day. I think she'll be fine. We're going to try it again tomorrow. Since there is a little more involved, I think we're going to need to leave a little earlier than normal, which means getting up earlier than normal. But not much. I'll get up around 5:45 or 6:00 and Abby will need to get up around 6:45. We need to leave around 7:20. And she was tired after her first day. She went to bed around 8:00 tonight. So we'll see what tomorrow brings.
It was nice having an extra day. But now, it's sad to see it go. Today we picked up some paint for Abby's room. I'm hoping to get it painted before Sean's parents come into town. I want to add more pink now that Sean is well aware that Abby is a girl.
Sean made ribs for dinner. Yummo!! And our little carnivore actually took off with one of his ribs! We added some pictures of her eating it. And yes, we do dress her. It just seems like we always have photo ops either while she's eating or right after. (There's usually only a short amount of time between eating and bathtime, so.....)
And now, I need to get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a long and hopefully not heartbreaking day for me. There were tears all around on Friday when Abby got picked up from Mrs. Kelly's. I am praying that I can handle it tomorrow and that Abby will love it. I still don't doubt that it is the right thing, but it just seems like she's so young!!! I don't want my baby to grow up!!! But I guess no one does. Wish me luck!!
A few notes in closing:
Made it through the week! YEAH!!! Today Sean and Abby woke up sick. I think it is just a runny nose for Abby, but Sean has the sore throat thing again. No fun! So, I took a trip to IKEA by myself. I don't think Sean liked it last time, so this way I got to walk around on my own timeframe. I have been looking for a quilt for Abby's bed, but I can't find one that I liked. And IKEA had a comforter with several "duvet" covers for them. And at $14.99 each! So I got a crib-sized comforter, pillow and covers. Plus, I also picked up the easle and paper that I have been wanting to get for her, some cover-ups (for her clothes), a mirror for her room, and a pink table to replace the fridge that we removed. (It hasn't been used since she stopped feeding in the night. But now she knows how to open it, which kinda makes me nervous. So, we removed it until the next kid comes-whenever that may be.)
We made chicken soup for dinner in hopes that its healing powers work. Abby went to bed REALLY early (8:00 pm- IN BED!) and I'm trying to get some additional laundry done before heading off to bed myself. I hope I stay imune to the illness and that Abby feels better by Tuesday for her first day at preschool.
I ordered a kiddie size adirondack (sp?) chair for Abby a few weeks ago. It came in and daddy put it together tonight. She hasn't seen it, so I'll have to get a picture of her in it tomorrow. I think it is too cute! And daddy did such a good job putting it together!
Also, I spoke to Karen today. Her surgery went as well as could be expected with no complications. She said to tell everyone thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
It has been a busy week. I've failed to post on a more regular basis since my stress level at work has quadrupled in the last week. So, here are some items of interest:
In closing, we only have a few more days left with Mrs. Kelly. We transfer to Goddard on Sept. 2. I am not looking forward to the transition, but we'll get thru it. And I know it will be good for Abby.
I added a new link to a friend's Shutterfly website. This is one of our Groomsmen and his wife who are expecting a baby soon (TJ and Stacey).
And last but by no means least, everyone please offer up a prayer for Karen. She will be having surgery on Monday.
Well, today I was cranky at work. And tonight Abby was cranky. So we're cranky. Oh well! I just hope she sleeps thru the night. She's gotten up EVERY night at least once for the last two weeks. Not sure what it is, but it needs to stop! Is her afternoon nap too long? Does she need to skip her afternoon nap? Is she getting too cool with the ceiling fan on? Or is it that she just wakes up and wants to be with us? Not sure, but she's been such a great sleeper since I went back to work, that this is just plain old ODD!!!
New pics posted as well of Abby just hanging out.
The rest of the week flew by! Before I knew it, it was Friday!! It seems like every day Abby does something new. I try to post every day just to keep the day's events fresh, but that doesn't always work. I do this mainly for me. I'm keeping this as a sort of journal. I wish I had started when she was born. So, please understand that I'm just trying to get this all "on paper" so to speak before I forget it. We all think our kids are amazing and brilliant. It's not that I think Abby is exceptional. I'm just amazed at the amount of changes in just a short amount of time!!!!
So...here are a few updates: Ironically, not just a few minutes after posting a comment on Karen's blog Friday morning before work about our kids not understanding what gravity is, Abby discovered it. To further explain- we've been able to climb stairs for a while, but she's not wanted to learn how to go down them. Within the last two weeks or so, she's been scooting down them on her bum while we hold on and scoot behind her. Friday morning as we began to scoot downstairs, she wiggled out of my grip while I was trying to sit and took a tumble down a few stairs. Oh the horror!!!! OK, so I know what it's like to have time slow down!! I felt like I couldn't move fast enough!!! She, of course, was screaming. Sean was in the shower, and the dogs were upset! I managed to get her up and back on our bed where I tried to check her out. No broken bones, no scrapes, just a good scare! (For both of us!!!) Luckily, it hasn't stopped her from going down them since. I just make sure she's really in my grip!!! Man-o-man are they fast or what?!?!?!?
She's also discovered the joys of the rocking chair in her room. She's been able to climb up on the couch for a while, but just recently discovered the rocking chair. She climbs up, sits right in the middle, points to her books (so I give them to her), and she proceeds to rock and "read". She looks so little and grown-up all at the same time!!! And she's really proud of herself. That's the cute part!
Finally, we went to a friend's daughter's birthday party this afternoon (Camille from NY). Her daughter just turned two. They have a pool, so of course, Abby and I went swimming. Sean stayed home since he is still under the weather. (I think his cold has moved to his chest.) There were lots of other kids there- several older boys and girls, as well as a 13 month old, and a 3 year old. Abby tried to play with the older girls. Oh how she tried. Alexandra (the birthday girl) has a ton of toys including a HUGE kitchen by Step2. I think my cousin's daughter Sarah has one. It has all sorts of cool kitchen stuff. They played well together, but it just proves to me that we've made the right decision to move Abby to a pre-school where she can be with kids her own age and learn to share and communicate. Anyway, we came home around 5:00 pm with just a short nap in the car on the way home. Needless to say, Abby went to sleep around 8:30 tonight! Hopefully, she sleeps thru the night!!! Several times over the last week or so, she's gotten up. Last night she got up 4 times!!! That's unusual for her.
Nothing much planned for tomorrow other than cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning.
I added some recent "Misc" pictures to the picture page, including: the before and after of my dining chair re-do (the gold is the new), some pics of Abby eating corn on the cob (those are pretty funny), sitting on daddy's shoulders like she's a big girl, and reading the newspaper at the table.
Also, she's starting to mimic us. If we're eating peas, she'll eat them, if we start to eat the corn, she goes to the corn, and tonight since we were using our regular glasses for tea or sprite, she wanted to drink out of one. She didn't want her sippie. Of course, I didn't give her glass. I put some water in one of her plastic cups which she proceeded to drink (for the most part). Some ended up on the floor or caught in her diaper, but she drank more than half. I was in shock! Who taught her that?!?!?!? Is it just from watching us? If so, oh boy!
Her new trick: trying to slide herself under the 6 or so inches of free space between the baby gate and the floor. I'm not sure if she's trying to escape, or if she just wants to see if she can do it. She's made it almost all the way thru on her tummy but gets stuck trying to get her head under. She tries on her back, too. But that isn't as productive.
And finally, Sean made raspberry sorbet tonight using our new icecream maker. It was yumm-o!!! It tasted JUST like those all-fruit popcicles!! And Abby had quite a bit of mine! I didn't think she would like it since it was so cold, but she ate it up. She kept getting impatient when I would take a bite.
Tomorrow is the half-way point. YEAH!!!!
Well, we didn't make it to the open house at Goddard this weekend. When we got up on Saturday, Abby's nose was running like you wouldn't believe and she was sneezing. She was warm, but didn't seem like she had a fever. But Sean didn't fare as well. By the afternoon he was displaying all the "sick" signs: coughing, sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, headache. So they stayed home and took a nap while I went to the grocery to pick up some chicken soup provisions. Luckily, I haven't gotten it. I REALLY, REALLY hope that I don't either. I have a ton of work to do and lots of travel ahead. I have to travel every two weeks thru October! I think the longest I would be gone is 4 nights, but that's still more than I have been gone so far. Hopefully, that will be it for a while. And hopefully, Sean won't have to travel at the same time. One of the downsides is that I may have to travel the first week of Sept. That's the week we start at Goddard. I really want to be here to get her used to it, and to get us in a routine. Right now, we just drop her off. At Goddard, you have to use a passcode to get in, sign her in, drop off food, pick up any communication documents in her "cubby," and take her to her classroom. I don't know about you, but that sounds more complex and more timely. I'm thinking that we're going to have to leave the house earlier! So, maybe I can get that travel pushed back a week. But that just means that I will have to travel two weeks in a row. I don't know which is worse?!?
While Sean rested and Abby played with her books, I re-covered our dining table chairs. I had made the mistake of putting Abby's booster seat right on the seat itself without anything to protect the seat cushion. I had originally covered them back in 1999 when I got the table. So they were due for an overhaul anyway. I had the brilliant idea to cover one of the seats with a shower curtain over the newly updated fabric. Turns out that I may have bought too cheap of a shower curtain. I just got one at the dollar store since I was going to cut it up anyway. Looks like I may have to get one of the heavy duty ones soon. But for now, it works wonders!!! Just wipe it clean!! No stains, no worries! Nice! We already have the plastic desk floor mat under her chair. Not that it protects everything. She can throw quite a distance! But she's getting better. I know she's done when she starts to play with her food.
Anyway...nothing exciting planned for this week. We do have a birthday party to go to on Saturday. Hopefully, everyone is well enough to go- it's a pool party!!!
Well, I made it up to MI with no problems, and I made it back. It was a quick trip. I did what I set out to do. But I am glad I'm back!! I got to drive one of our pool cars- a silver Camry. Every time I drive a Toyota, I am more impressed. It got realy good gas mileage and drove so very smoothly. I had no problems until I got back to Cincinnati around 4:45 pm. Traffic like you wouldn't believe!!! I think there was a tractor trailer overturned. Luckily, I have good friends like Desi who I called to give me directions thru downtown to get out of there and home at a decent hour. I made it back to work by 5:30 to turn in the car. I made it home by 6:00 and all is well. Sean and Abby were fine. I got lots of screams and jumping up and down when she finally saw me.
The hotel was fine. A little old, but ok. They upgraded me to a suite. I guess they ran out of regular rooms. Since I was only staying one night, I guess they thought they could switch me. No complaints here. So, I ended up with a 2 room suite with a kitchenette, dining table, separate bedroom, and a huge (I mean HUGE) 2-person whirlpool bath. So, I got some Outback to go (one of my favorite restaraunts, but I don't get it very often), ate, and set out to have a bath. Abby could have swam in it. It was really nice. It took a while to fill up, and I didn't even try to fill it up all the way, just enough to cover the jets.
I had a hard time sleeping. It's hard when you're out of your routine and away from your family. Something (a sound) woke me up around 1:30. It sounded like someone trying to get in. I had closed the doors to the bedroom to help keep it cool. But I could see thru the slits into the living area where I had kept the light over the sink on. Nothing. It took me forever to get back to sleep and get my heart rate back down.
The weird thing is that when I talked to Sean yesterday, he said Abby woke up at the same time screaming like she was scared of something. He had to cuddle and rock her back to sleep. Spooky, huh?
So...we have an open house at Goddard tomorrow and cleaning the rest of the weekend!! Fun, fun, fun!
Here's some follow-ups to this morning's post. 1) Sean survived his first day back to work. (We even got to have lunch together.) 2) Mrs. Kelly was fine with our news. She's going to have her hands full with 3 newborns! 3) I will be heading to Michigan in the morning. Originally, I was supposed to go up today, but....it's a long story. So I will be up there tomorrow and return on Thursday afternoon. I see a bath in an actual bathtub in my near future! That's the good thing about traveling for work- free meals and time for a long bubble bath!
Well, it is Tuesday. And that means 1) Sean has to go back to work after being off for 10 days, 2) we have to tell Mrs. Kelly that we're putting Abby in preschool, and 3) I have to explain to my VP why I'm not going to MI (beacuse several of my co-workers think it will be a waste of my time- but how do you tell a VP that?).
I didn't sleep well. I bought a mouthguard thingy to help with my bruxism (grinding). It sort-of fits, but I end up spitting it out at some point only to wake up and try to find it. I guess it will take some time to get used to. I need it though. I actually woke myself up grinding the other night. I think that's why I chipped one of my teeth back in Jan.
I'm hoping that we can get back into some sort of routine over the next few days. It was really good for Sean to spend some one-on-one time with Abby. They have a much, much stronger bond now. I'll let you know how today goes.
Well, we made it to the zoo. It didn't go down as I had planned. In some cases, it was better than expected, and in some cases it was worse.
First of all, we didn't make it there until after 10:00 am. The good news is that the rain was pushed off until tomorrow, so it was clear sailing. It was a little overcast early on, but the sun came out right about the time we got there. And it wasn't too hot, either. The bad news is that the zoo has some construction going on. That wasn't mentioned on their website. In fact, there was A LOT of construction going on!!!! Right after we paid and were walking to the first exhibit, a HUGE dumptruck was traveling towards us down the same path. And you know how narrow those "streets" are!!! I mean, there wasn't much room!! That happened at least one more time while we were there. Also, several exhibits were closed, and they had those golf carts zipping in and out EVERYWHERE!!! To top it off, they don't use their horns! Abby almost got ran over once. Not a positive experience!! I have only heard great and wonderful things about this zoo, but those incidents will make me think twice before I ever recommend it.
I think she may still be a little too young to enjoy everything there, but overall I think she had fun. Part of my plan was to try to get home for lunch. Well, that didn't happen. I had packed water and snacks, but that wasn't going to cover for lunch. So, we ate at one of the places there. I will say this- there are plenty of options all over the zoo if you are hungry. But like any of those types of places, everything was expensive. Our lunch was $24. Ouch!! We took the small umbrella stroller, and she did really well riding in it until lunch. After lunch, all she wanted to do was walk around like a big kid. And she did. Luckily, she held my hand most of the time. There were a few trips and stumbles, so we have a 2nd banged up knee. But just a few scrapes. Nothing major. No tears even. By the time we got to the monkey area, we could tell that she was getting tired, so we started to head back. I think we left around 2:00 pm. Not too bad! She held out as long as she could!!! Of course, she was passed out within a few minutes in the car. Her favorites were: the bears, the otters (of course), and the birds. We may try to go to the Indianapolis Zoo next time.
Other updates: I tried to trim her bangs this evening. They have been getting so long. I really hate to cut them, but she won't leave a barrette or even ponytail holder in. So, I trimmed. I don't think I cut enough, so I may have to cut more tomorrow. Oh well.
And, she's learning to snap. She tries really hard. I think she's trying to dance. She will rock back and forth in a circle and "snap." Funny and cute.
And finally, she has a new favorite book, "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb." She will bring it over and make us read it to her three and four times in a row. It was one of my favorite books when I was little, but it is rather repetitive. We have to hide it from her. Seriously. I think she's addicted.
OK, so that's it. Sorry for the exceptionally long post. Check out the zoo photos in the "Pictures" tab.
Well, we got to go swimming this evening and gave daddy some much needed "daddy time." The water was too cold, so we didn't stay long. Abby's getting better about holding her breath. We got completely dunked tonight and recovered well. There was a look of shock on her face, and she did cough a little, but she went right back to "swimming!"
For those who want to see some amazing photos of Japan. Check out the "Bowman Blog" to the right. Amy has been visiting her sister in Japan and has posted some pics on their blog. They are really cool!
One thing I failed to mention the other night was that I ran into our new neighbors Tuesday night when we were taking out the trash. She said that they were taking Cole to the Dr. on Friday for some tests. I guess when they got him in on Sunday (after the going in circles in the cul-de-sac episode) he was drooling and somewhat unresponsive. So they took him to the pediatrician who thought maybe he was having seizures. He was acting more himself after some gatoraid, but they want to run some tests to be sure. Hope all goes well.
I think we're going to try to get to the zoo early tomorrow for 3 reasons: 1) to beat the heat, 2) to beat the rain, and 3) to get back in time for lunch. We'll see what happens. It is supposed to rain around 1:00 pm. If we get to go, I'll make sure we get tons of pictures!
Since I have been up since 5:00 am this morning, I will try to keep this short and sweet:
Sean made ice cream tonight. It was wonderful.
Abby scraped her knee. That picture is posted above. She's OK. Just a scrape. But now she has a cool bandaid.
We may go swimming tomorrow and give daddy some daddy time. I have Friday off. Hopefully, it will be nice enough and we can go to the zoo!!!
I've had a long week already. My meeting today went well. One snaffoo was the lunch. I had to get food for all 25 of us. So I ordered Roly Poly (wraps). They were supposed to deliver it at 11:15 am for our lunch at 11:30 am. When I hadn't seen them at 11:20, I started to panic. We had people drive 7 hours and some even came from Canada!!! I didn't want them to not get food!!!! Can you imagine?!?!?!?!? So I get a call at 11:30 from some guy saying my food was at the front desk. Well, our receptionist is female and I was already at the front desk. Maybe a clue that something is wrong? My thought was that they delivered it to the Toyota building across across the interstate. I called to ask where my food was, and I was right. So, they had to come back out, pick up the food, and bring it to the correct address. I called Toyota to make sure that they still had it. Luckily, they did. No one ate all our food in that 15 minutes. By the time the guy showed up, it was 11:50 am!!! The good news is that the meeting was already behind schedule, so they were still discussing when I came in to arrange the food. Whew!! Needless to say, I will not be ordering from Roly Poly ever again. The thing I most regret is that I paid with my corporate credit card and had already given them a $25 tip!!!! I may still call tomorrow to complain. I ordered on-line and had to input our address and I confirmed via a phone call. When I went thru the delivery receipt, the address was even on that. Oh well! It all worked out, but I was kinda stressed for 30 minutes.
Off to bed for me!!! I'm wiped.
Sean and Abby have fared very well on their own over the past two days. And, it looks like they went shopping both days! Yesterday they got a salad spinner and a playstation 3. Today, they got an attachment for the KitchenAid (one that we have wanted for a while) the ice cream maker!!!!! So soon there will be wonderful homemade ice cream!!!! Good thing, too. It's been getting progressively hotter here.
We got a honeydew and a watermelon on Sunday at Jungle Jims. Abby really like the honeydew whish she had on Sunday, but today she was introduced to the watermelon. Check out the new "PICTURES" tab for some very funny photos of her eating it. (And wiping her mouth on the towel hanging on the stove.) Apparently, it is now her new favorite food. She makes this giggle/laugh that is kinda creepy and cute at the same time. It's weird. I really wish we had a video camera for this one.
I have a busy day at work tomorrow. Have to be in at 7:00 to set up for the meeting. So, I will need to cut this one short.
Busy, busy, busy! That's what it always seems like. Today, daddy went by Lowe's first thing and picked up some stain and polyeurathane (sp?) for Abby's table and chairs. He also got another shade for the back deck. When he got back, we decided to go to Costco. While there, we picked up more diapers. This time we got size 4's. We've needed them for about two weeks now, but had so many of the 3's left. Our little girl is growing up!
When we got home, our new neighbors were in the cul-de-sac. Well, just the 23-month old. He was driving his pick-up truck around in circles. I stopped by while Sean was unloading and spoke with his mom, dad, and grandparents. Apparently Cole got this truck for Christmas but is just now getting used to driving it. He was doing a really good job steering!!! (Better than most adults!) His mom introduced herself, but for the life of me, I can't remember her name!!! Guess I'll have to do some investigating. We had to cut our visit short due to Cole going in constant circles in 95 degree heat, thus making him sick. His birthday is next month. Maybe we'll get to go. It was cute watching Abby watch him. He was shy around her.
This evening we had a big storm come thru. We had to go to the basement for while since we had a tornado warning. Abby kept saying "shhhh" to the thunder. When we came up, there was a rainbow. (I tried to take a picure, but I am not a great photographer. What I did get is posted above.) It knocked over a bunch of our plants out on the deck, including my HUGE aloe plant. It needed to be re-potted anyway, but Sean had to cut off some of the damaged leaves. Hope it makes it!! This one came from TN. I have 3-4 plants from when I lived in NY. One that Karen gave me!
So, I'll keep you posted of all the fun that Sean and Abby have this week together. I am sad that I can't take more time off, but that's the way it goes. (I need to save the time I do have left for a trip to NY, when Sean's parents come out, and the "just-in-case".)
Today we went to the Ikea located in West Chester, OH. It is about 40 minutes away (which I consider a trek). But I wanted a kiddie size table and chairs for Abby and they have the best prices. The ones at Target and Babies R Us were about $90 for the set, but we got one today for $39.99!! Of course, you have to put it together, and we used more gas to get this one, but oh well! I don't have any pictures since Sean wants to stain it before we put it together. (Sounds like a trip to Lowe's!) Ikea was a MADHOUSE!! They were giving away free drinks for the people standing in line to pay! I think we had 15 people in front of us just in our line!!! And all the lanes were open! Abby was a trooper, as always. I would really like to go back when I can look at everything. There were just too many people there! I also wanted to pick up an easle that they have, but it was too big to fit in the Escape. (Yet another reason to get a truck!)
Since we were in the area, we stopped by Jungle Jims which is a "global food" market. It has all sorts of animated characters. Daddy got us some Monterrey Jack cheese (which Abby loves- she is 1/2 Californian!), apricots, and some steak for dinner!!! But the best part of dinner was the home-grown squash and zucchini that my friend Rhonda gave us. She has this amazing garden and gave us like 5 pounds of the best looking veggies around. They're bigger than the ones at the grocery! So tonight Abby had her first taste of real (not babyfood) squash and zucchini. I think she liked it. She ate almost all that we gave her. So this posting goes out to Rhonda and her wonderful garden!!
Sean's finally home! His return trip was without delay! I can't say the same for his flight out. I think they had delays at both Cincinnati and in Philly. I picked him up from the airport around 3:45 pm and then picked up Abby. Mrs. Kelly will be off all next week. And since I am running short of vacation time and have a large meeting on Wednesday with guests coming from all over the U.S., Sean gets to stay home all next week with her!!! I am taking Friday off in the hopes that it is nice enough to go to the Zoo! After we got Abby, we went to Goddard to drop off the application (and fee). I didn't expect to do anything else, but wanted Sean and Abby to at least see inside the place. By the time we got there it was almost 4:30 pm. We met with the owner who has miraculously found an opening for us in Sept. (I think that has something to do with one of our friends who already sends her daughter there and is friends with the manager!) So now the hard part is going to be telling Mrs. Kelly and working through this transition. I think in the long run it will be best for Abby. She was really facinated with all the kids. (We went on a quick tour thru the place.)
We got home and spent some time in the sand and kiddie pool. Then a chicken and rice-a-roni dinner. (I swear you would think that she hasn't eaten in days if you were to see her shovel it in!) Sean's suitcase was in the dining room and she decided to empty it. (Those are posted below.) We had a bath and got to bed, but about 15 minutes after I put her down, she started screaming. Her leg had gotten stuck between the slats. I pulled her out and she's ok. But I know it hurt. Hopefully, it won't bruise. I rocked with her for a little while and had a really touching moment. She actually let me cuddle with her for a while like we used to. And she kept pressing her hand to my lips for me to kiss her palm. It was one of the sweetest things. Those are some pretty kissable palms!! My angel!
One other note: this morning we were watching the news while getting ready and one of the newscasters was at a pool at a hotel (I think) downtown. Abby stopped what she was doing, pointed at the tv and basically said, "hey mom, look at the pool!" She just kept pointing. I guess she is really excited about pools!!! It was funny! I knew she liked the water!
Not sure what else we have going on this weekend other than just hanging out and cleaning. (And spending some quality time with my husband and beautiful, sweet daughter!)
One more day!!! Sean's flight comes in around 3:45 pm! Yeah!!!! I'm sure he's missed Abby (and maybe me too)!
We went back over to Desi's this evening to swim. Originally, the weather forecast said that there was a chance of clouds and rain, but nothing of the sort happened. It was nice and hot today. So, we enjoyed the pool a little longer tonight since we got there at 5:45. We didn't even take the floatie this time. But we did take a sippie. All that exercise makes a girl thirsty!!! Tonight we "worked on" holding our breath and getting our face wet. And Desi's boyfriend Scott stopped in for a splash. Guys are overall more rough than girls, but Abby loved the splashing! He played with her and was just a sweet and gentle (at least with her). Abby's really getting attached to them. She's seen them 3 nights this week alone! Now, she's reaching for Desi and giving big, open-mouth kisses to both of them! I am truly blessed to have such great friends.
Just a quick note about last night: I have the best friends ever!!! Desi called about 7:00 pm and asked if I minded if she stopped by for a moment. Her boyfriend has a friend who lives the next street over and his parents live in the next subdivision. He friend wanted him to go for a run with him, so Desi thought I may need some help with Abby for a moment. She remembered me saying that I needed to water our plants, but that I would have to wait until Abby went to sleep. What a wonderful, thoughtful friend!! Both her and Scott played with Abby for 5-10 minutes while I watered all our plants. (We have a tomato that looks like it may be ready soon!!!) Abby is amazed by Scott. He's a big, bald toy! He was too cute trying to teach her how to throw the football. (He's a rugby player. Like on a team. He's played at the Cincinnati Bengal's stadium.)That 10 minutes was so helpful! Thank you to my amazing friends!!!
Not too long after they left, Abby had a bath and went to sleep. And I started to watch "Knocked Up" which I had recorded last week. I had heard it was funny, and it was. But I stayed up too late watching it. (Way to get some rest, right?!?!?!?) And Abby woke up twice between 12:00 am and 1:40 am. Oh well! Who needs sleep? She was OK. I guess she just needed to cuddle.
So tonight if it doesn't rain, I think we may go back to Desi's to swim and then over to another friend, Elizabeth's house. She adores Abby and hasn't seen her in a while, so we may stop by. I'll let you know how our last night without daddy goes!
This morning, mom and dad left at 7:30 am when Abby and I left for daycare/work. Today was their 35th wedding anniversary!! Congrats to them!!! Few can say that anymore!
After work, Abby and I went to aunt Desi's to swim again. I had planned ahead and packed swimsuits for both of us as well as towels, sunscreen, and swimmies. But we didn't have any pool toys, so I stopped in Walgreens and picked up a bouncy play ball. We took the floatie as well. This time, there was only one other person at the pool and he was actually swimming laps as exercise!! It was almost 6:00 pm by the time we got in the pool. It didn't get really hot today- 86 degrees I think. But the water was soooo nice and warm!! Abby didn't last long in the floatie. She wanted OUT pretty quickly. Luckily, we did get some photos (posted below). And like last time, she loved it!!! She is really a water girl! This time she got her face wet several times. I think we actually went under once. She wanted me to let go of her!!! Again, I could feel her little muscles straining to get away and swim. It looks like we may have to start going to a "mommie and me" swim class like Jack and Amy did. Not sure if we'll make it back over this week, but we sure did have fun tonight. And we made it home in time to have some dinner at a decent time! We only stayed in the pool until around 7:00 pm. Our fingers and toes were starting to prune! Abby did pee on aunt Desi's bathroom floor, though. Oh well! She drank 2 sippies of water/juice after swimming! And she ate pretty well tonight.
After she went to sleep (a little earlier than usual), I managed to clean the kitchen up, start a load of dishes, water the plants, wash a load of laundry and get it in the dryer, fold a load of laundry, take out all the trash and recycling, start getting my lunch together for tomorrow, and try to superglue Abby's sunglasses back together. (They were just a dollar, but why throw them away when she can still use them on walks, etc.) At this point, I'm beat. So...this is it for now. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow!
Well, it has been a while since I've posted. Since last post 1) my dental woes have diminished, 2) we found out that Abby REALLY likes Rice-a-Roni (it's the San Francisco treat!!), 3) we have had our first parenting "issue", 4) my parents stopped in for a visit, and 5) Sean left for New York for the week. So, I'll explain in further detail:
1) I've been dilligent about keeping my wisdom tooth space very clean. (Some may say I have OCD.) Earlier in the week I had Sean look at it with his flashlight to make sure I hadn't missed any food. His response was "no food, but I can see your jaw bone!" Nice! My response: "Now do you see why I was in so much pain?" So, it is begining to heal and close up. I'm off my antibiotics, and haven't taken any Tylenol since Friday. On the road to recovery!!!
2) We made Rice-a-Roni one night for dinner and found out that Abby loves it. She was literally shoveling it in. I had to get another box to make the next night with the leftover chicken! Sean's witty remark about her love of the San Francisco treat was "well, she is half Californian!"
3) We had an issue at daycare on Friday. I'm sure it won't be the last, but it definately knocked me down a few notches. Apparently, Abby BIT another child at daycare!!!! I know! I know! This is a horrible thing!!! I have since researched and read, asked for advise, and cried!!! Our little girl really is a sweatheart. Promise! But I fear that she is too much like me. She wants what she wants when she wants it. I can only hope that it was the ONE and ONLY time it happens. As a result, I am looking into moving her into a preschool where she will be around more kids her own age. And more supervision. And more learning activities. The best school in the area, Goddard, can be kinda hard to get into. The owner is looking to see when the earliest is that we could get her in. I asked for sometime in January, but it may be sooner. I am not looking forward to the almost double-what-I-pay-now monthly cost, but it may be worth it to keep her stimulated and active. I'll keep ya posted on that development. ****And if anyone has any advise, please let us know. I don't want to end up the parent of "a biter!"
4) My parents went to Indiana over the weekend. Since we're kinda on the way back, they stopped in and spent the night last night. They also stayed today and Abby-sat. ALL DAY!!! I'm sure they're about ready to drop! They played and played. They went for three walks- one in the stroller, one in the pink car, and one in the wagon! I'm sure Mrs. Kelly will appreciate all their hard work (spoiling her).
5) Sean left for New York for the week. He will be back on Friday. So, I'm single mom this week. But I plan on taking Abby to Aunt Desi's to swim this week at least once. And I promise this time to take some pictures of her in the floatie. It's supposed to be pretty hot here this week, so it should be a good week for it. And I got her two new swimsuits- so we have to try them out!
I'll try to do better about posting this week.
Just a quick update on my dental situation. I went back to the dentist yesterday since my pain wasn't going away and it was spreading to my ear. He confirmed that I have a dry socket!!! What joy!!! He cleaned out the space/hole/cavity and re-packed it with that nasty eugenol stuff. He also prescribed some antibiotics. So, the rest of the day and evening were not much fun! The packing helped with the pain, but I really think the cure was worse than the illness!!! I hate that stuff. I couldn't eat with it in. He said that it was supposed to stay in and that my gums would heal around it. Well, around 7:00 pm I could tell that the stuff was trying to work its way out. By 9:00 pm I had a headache and tried to go to sleep. At some point I got up to take some tylenol and took the gauze out that I was using to try to keep the eugenol in. Well, to my surprise (and relief) it all came out!!!! I was able to sleep better after that. So this morning, I had my usual breakfast of carnation instant breakfast (hey! we're busy people!) and called the dentist when I got to work. I had done some research on the internet and found a few websites that said that the packing was mainly for pain control and that healing was the same with or without packing. So, my thinking is that if I can control the pain with just tylenol and keep it clean, I should be ok. I stopped by the dentist office to pick up a syringe with a curved tip to help rinse the space/hole/cavity. And by golly! It works!! I used it after lunch. And yes, I actually had food! Granted, it was soup and some (verry little) salad. But you would be amazed at what got rinsed out! OK, so I don't want to gross everyone out. So, anyway....I've been trying to keep it clean using warm salt water after every meal. The pain is a lot better as well. Hopefully, there won't be anything else to post regarding my missing teeth.
Happy 4th of July!!!
Since it is raining here, I thought it would be a good time to go downtown to the Newport Aquarium. I think everyone with kids must have had the same idea. We got there around 10:00 am. Luckily there wasn't a line to get tickets, but there was quite a line inside! We ended up skipping the first several exhibits. Abby was more interested in all the kids and what was going on around her than the fish. But we managed to get in front of the biggest group of people and their 10 million kids! The rest of the trip was amazing! Abby started to actually pay attention to the tanks and the fish and all the other critters. She really like the otter which she called a "doggy." I've posted pictures below. These are with the smaller camera, and the glass made it hard to use the flash, so the quality is not the best. But you can tell that Abby had a great time (and so did we)! She really liked the divers who were cleaning the tanks and feeding the fish!!! There are several water "tunnels" where the fish swim above and below you. Of course, the only exit is THROUGH the gift shop. And being the suckers that we are, she ended up with a stuffed otter and a plastic shark for the tub. And we paid an extra $30 or so and got a yearly pass. Now, we can go back whenever we want!! And when we left around 11:45 the line was much, much longer- even just to purchase tickets! I'm glad we got there when we did. Plus, we made it home in time to get Abby some lunch! She's still carrying around that otter! newportaquarium.com
Twice in one night...how did you ever get so lucky?
#1) Tonight was a busy night. After the last post, we had some exciting things happen. Abby and I went back outside. She accidentally threw the tennis ball into the dogs water trough in the backyard. So daddy went to retrieve it and discovered a small frog in it. Since we have the large retaining basin in our back yard, I'm assuming this will end up being a big bullfrog, but we'll see!
#2) Our new neighbor stopped over and introduced himself. His name is Sean as well! (Although I didn't ask how he spelled it.) He seems nice. He said that they had a 22 month old boy, so Abby may have a new friend! We'll have to get together!
#3) We went inside to eat dinner (daddy made chicken parm-yummmy!). Both dogs started barking, which is kinda unusual. Sophie typically barks at animals and Luna at people, so I was a little concerned. I looked out and didn't see anyone or anything. But they kept barking and both had raised hair. When I went down to take a closer look, I discovered that there was rather large turtle in Sean's grapevines. (Pics are below.) We had seen one in the pond, but hadn't seen him since the storm last month. I'm glad that he's OK. (Or..it could be a SHE who is looking for a place to lay eggs? I don't know anything about turtles!) If you look at the pictures, you will be able to see some of Sean's grapes.
#4) Eating. I gave our little carnivore some noodles while the chicken was cooling off. Those pics are pretty funny. She learned how to slurp them up. Pretty entertaining. (Pics below.) By the way, she ate most of my chicken.
It was such a nice, cool, breezy evening. So Abby and I took her car out for a spin. Sean's parents got Abby a battery operated car for her birthday. We've taken it out before, but this is the first time I got it on film (pictures added below). When we go back, we went out on the back porch for some fun with the dogs. There's even an action shot of Abby throwing the tennis ball to daddy!
It looks like we may have a rainy 4th of July. But that won't bother me too much. I have a dentist apt. tomorrow afternoon to have two of my wisdom teeth pulled. I am not looking forward to it, but I think it will help. This dentist is really good.
And one final note: Sean is turning over the title to his truck tomorrow. Toyota made him an offer that he couldn't refuse, so tomorrow it will no longer be his. But don't feel too bad for him, once the title to my car comes in (I just paid it off last week!), we'll be trading it in for a brand new Toyota Tundra. Sean's already done the research and found out which ones hold car seats in the back. We'll keep everyone posted on that!!!!
We re-measured Abby here just to discover that she really is only 30 1/2 inches tall. But I don't know what growth chart the pediatrician's nurse was using, because that equates to about the 50-55% (not 85%). I guess we don't need to worry right now. We'll see where she is at her 18 month check-up and go from there. It is hard to tell when its your own child and you see them everyday. Luckily, we haven't had any reactions to the shots. We had to give her some tylenol that night, but that was it.
We've been having amazing weather here lately. Unseasonably cool! Not that I am complaining!! We've only had to use our air conditioner a few times this season. But this means that Abby and I have spent a lot of time out on our deck. She just loves it out there. She likes the plants, the breeze, and playing with Sophie and Luna. Sophie plays fetch while Luna gets the lovin'.
Sean made a Santa Maria style dinner last night. That consists of tri-tip (for those who don't what this is, it is a cut of beef like bottom sirloin), grilled garlic bread, and trail camp beans called pinquito which are only grown in the Santa Maria Valley. Sean is famous within my family for this particular dinner. My parents love this meal (and so do I)!!! Anyway, Sean cut up the meat REALLY thin and gave Abby some with the beans. The beans are kinda spicy, but she gobbled them down. She couldn't figure out what was going on- but apparently her mouth was burning. She really appreciated the sippie of water! We got some pictures, but I haven't had a chance to download them. I'll try to get them on here tonight. We've also discovered that she likes cucumbers which Sean put in the salad. I think they helped cool off her tongue when it got too hot. So, before bed she got a good squirt of some anti-gas meds. Beans, cucumbers...I dunno what we were thinking. But she was ok. Who knows what Mrs. Kelly had to put up with though!
One final note: Abby has a favorite book. It is called "I Love You Through and Through." It's really cute so I don't mind reading it. And I guess I've made it interactive. It basically goes thru different things like "I love your top side, your bottom side, your inside, your outside, your fingers, toes, etc." Well, I guess I make faces, noises and hand gestures when I read it. So when we read it, she makes the motions that go along with the words and pictures. Tonight when Sean was reading it to her, he was amazed. It was funny to watch. She will point to her nose and eyes, wiggle her fingers and toes. Again, I think we need a video camera. These are too funny not to share!
Well, not much has been going on this week. Thankfully, Abby is feeling better. We went to her 15 month check-up today. Originally, it was scheduled for last Friday, but her Dr. wanted to wait until she had taken all of her medicine before she came back. So, we had to re-schedule at the last minute. Which means we didn't have a whole lot of options as far as timing!!! I scheduled the apt. for 12:00 (noon) today probably thinking that would save Sean and/or myself from having to take too much time off of work. But what I didn't think about was Abby's lunch. We picked her up at about 11:25, so I know that she didn't get to eat at Mrs. Kelly's. And we both forgot to get a sippie for her. (She's used to a sippie for the car ride home, so I just assumed that she would want one for the ride to the Dr. Luckily, she was so excited to see us, that she didn't even miss the sippie!! Yeah!!!) When we went to get her out of the car at the doctor's office, I noticed that she had pooped. Being the great mom that I am, I had diapers- but NO WIPES!!! Great!!! We haven't used a diaper bag since she was a baby. I just keep one in each car stocked with the necessities. But I had taken out the wipe container when we got back from TN since it was empty. I just hadn't filled it back up and replaced it!!!! So, we had to make due with wet paper towels from the doctor's office bathroom. And by the way, you cannot dispose of dirty diapers in their trash cans. They will give you a plastic bag, but you get to keep the soiled diaper! And so I did. In my purse!! At this point I'm feeling like I must not have my head on straight. Abby did really well waiting in the lobby. When she began to get too restless, they called us back. Great timing!! Things are looking up! She got her weight taken on the big girl scale again. This time she stood still long enough for it to read: 23.6 pounds (65%). Her height is 30.5 inches (85%) and her head circ. is 18.5 (75%). I'm reading into this that she may have her father's genes and end up tall and skinny! But the doctor wasn't too happy that her weight percentile had dropped so much. She wants us to increase the amt. of milk we give her and reduce the water/juice combo. I think we can do that. Everything else looked normal. She got two shots, but recovered quickly. I was suprised to hear that they can have a reaction including a rash up to 2 weeks after the measles shot. Hopefully, that doesn't happen. So...next apt isn't until Sept. We did finally get to eat. Sean and I had to get back to work, so we had to make due with Wendy's chicken nuggets and mandarin oranges. Oh well. We made it through.
Busy weekend. Sean stayed home on Friday with Abby for two reasons: 1) he needed to burn some vacation time so that he would keep accruing it and 2) Mrs. Kelly's sister came in from Colorado for a visit, so she took the day off. From the sounds of it, he and Abby had a great day. Her rash is gone, she looks and acts like she feels better, but she still has several days left of her medicine. We go to the doctor on Wednesday, so we'll give you updates then.
After work, I went with one of my friends to the museum center to go thru a traveling exhibit called "Bodies: The Exhibition." It was spectacular! I will post a link to it. (But be aware that it may be a bit graphic.) I've been meaning to go, but it's not something that you could take a child to. These are actual bodies and body parts that have been preserved using polymers. If you know me, you know that I LOVED this exhibit! It has been a controversial exhibit here. Anyway, I'm glad that we didn't take Abby, since she would have tried to TOUCH everything. Most dispays did not have glass, so it would have been very difficult to keep her from touching everything. Plus, she wouldn't have wanted to stay in her stroller for that long. So, Desi and I went by ourselves for a "girls night out." It was a much needed night off, but I have to admit that by 9:00, I was missing my little girl! She was already asleep when I got home!!!!
Yesterday we spent doing regular Saturday chores- mowing the grass, laundry (which I am still doing!), vacuuming, and dusting! But last night we went over to Adam's house for a little while. For those of you who don't know, Adam is a former roommate of mine. We lived together in NY for a while. We both moved from out of state and couldn't afford rent on our own (I don't know who can!!!!). Anyway, he moved here right before I did. Sean, Abby and I only stayed for a little while. It was still nice to get out for a while. Plus we got to see some of our other friends, Aaron, Teri and their son, Aiden, who is 3 or so. It is amazing to see how much they change when you're not around them often. The last time I saw him, he was just a baby!! But Abby had a good time running around Adam's basement that they just had finished. (Now, Sean and I are wondering what it would take to do ours!!!!)
Anyway, we're just hanging out here today. Sean made breakfast for us, I'm still doing laundry, but I think Sean may go to the gun range and I may go shopping (with Abby, of course!).
So Mrs. Kelly called at lunch to tell us that Abby has a rash all over and that she thinks she has roseola (sp?). She didn't think that it was contageous now, but Abby wasn't her normal self. And since we couldn't see how bad it was, we decided to go get her. And since we carpool, that meant that both of us had to go. Luckily, she didn't look too bad, so Sean went back to work while I stayed home with her. I tried to keep her somewhat content. I know she's not feeling well. She'll just lay down wherever she is playing for a minute or two then start screaming! She'll reach for me and just want to cuddle. Which is nice, if I thought I could make her feel better. We also went out on the deck for a while where she practiced throwing the tennis ball for Sophie to fetch. She's getting pretty good at tossing the ball and saying "Luna" but still has trouble with "Sophie." And the dogs were great! They were really patient with her and didn't take the ball from her at all!
Finally, last night I realized that someone (not Sean or I) has taught her to play "patty cake." I don't remember what we were doing, but she started to roll her hands like the "roll 'em up" part. I'm just amazed every day at how much they learn and how fun they are. I'll have to get a camcorder to record all this fun stuff!
Abby's feeling a little better. She's still not completely herself. We still have to give her something for the fever, but she is good about taking the medicine. She didn't eat well tonight. It looked like it hurt to chew. She's a trooper!
I added some pics below of her using the booster seat. The eating is messy, but now we can use the table to color!! What fun!
Well, we have ear infection #2. I'm not complaining, since I have heard that it is kind of a right of passage. I've heard horror stories about the number of ear infections some of my friend's kids have had. Mrs. Kelly called me while I was at lunch to come pick her up since she had a fever. By the time we got home, she was cranky. When Sean took her temp, it was 101.7 and rising. (But mrs. wiggleworm wouldn't sit still long enough for it to quit reading.) We decided to go ahead and take her to the doctor after giving her some tylenol for the fever. They were good about getting her in pretty quickly. We were supposed to go in on Friday for her 15 month check-up and shots, but the Dr. thought we should wait until after her 10 days of medication, so we had to reschedule for next week. We did find out that she is between 22-23 pounds. (Again, she wouldn't stand still long enough on the "big girl" scale- the one that you STAND on.) We will give updates on her height after next week's check-up.
And one of the other things that could be causing her cranky behavior- 4 more teeth are coming in. Looks like the upper eye teeth have poked through and the lower eye teeth will be next. I hope the Dr. gets her hearing back. When she tried to open her mouth to look at her throat, Abby SCREAMED!!! That's when the Dr. saw the 4 new teeth. (Nothing better than screaming at the Dr.'s office!!!)
Since we had to go to Target to fill her prescription, we picked up some more tylenol and a booster seat. One of the things that we've been noticing is that she doesn't like to sit in her high chair with the tray. When we ate out the other day, they had the wooden high chair that sits right next to the table. She really liked that. So, we got a cheap plastic one that straps to your chairs. We tried it out tonight with great success. We're able to sit right next to Mommy and Daddy and eat off the table. Which means that the mess is closer to us!!!! We did get some pics of that mess, but I haven't had a chance to upload them.
In closing...hopefully, she will sleep through the night and feel better in the morning. The Dr. said that she wasn't contagious, so we should be able to take her back to daycare. Wish us luck!
So while I was writing the last entry, my mom was out on the back porch with Abby. (Again, I remind you that she LOVES to be outside! She's been dragging us outside all day!) It was dusk, dogs were barking in the background, and baseball games were going on. My parents don't live too far from the local park where youth baseball and softball games are held. You could hear the crowd cheering players on. It was picturesque. When I finished the entry, Sean and I joined them. Abby was sitting like a grown-up at the table (they have the nice patio furniture with cushions and a glass table). When we came out, we discovered that she had learned something new. Apparently, my mom was trying to get her to listen to the different noises and kept saying "shhhh...listen" while holding her finger to her mouth. Abby would be walking around and would occasionally just stop and say, "shhhh" includng the finger to her mouth! She did it several times!! I swear they are sponges! Shhhhh.
Fearing a complete meltdown if we tried to take her in, we fixed her some dinner and took it out for her to eat it on the back porch. Needless to say, there were plenty of distractions! We tried initially to bring the high chair out for her. She would not have any of that!!! She wanted to sit in the grown-up chairs at the table. So we let her. But then the fireflies (lightning bugs) started to show up. That was it! She was simply amazed. We have them at home, but most of them hang out down by the pond. We tried to catch a few. More showed up as it got darker. The look on her face was priceless!! It wasn't fear- just pure wonder. I can't really describe it. And of course, I didn't have the camera. But trust me...it was a look I won't soon forget. Guess we'll be spending more time trying to collect them when we get home.
Wow! Tonight was a busy night!
#1. When we got home, there was a package waiting for us that included some dry ice. So, Sean played Mr. Wizard and put some in a glass with water. What a reaction! Abby was thoroughly amazed. (Pictures below.)
#2. While I was upstairs changing clothes, Sean started up the Wii Fit. Abby wanted to play, so he took some pics of her on it (pictures below). Whoa, girl!
#3. Sean had bought some champagne for our anniversary. Since we didn't open it last night, we thought we would open it tonight to celebrate. Abby was interested in what those funny glasses were and kept reaching for them. When Sean finished his, he gave it (empty) to Abby. She proceeded to pretend to drink from it. She even put her hand in it and tried to lick her fingers. (Don't worry! She didn't get anything...Promise!) But it was too funny to pass up, so those pics are below as well!
We are going to drive down to Nashville in the morning to see my folks for Father's Day. I will try to take plenty of photos while we're down there. These trips are usually really busy. We try to see EVERYONE while we're in town. So, I'm sure there will be plenty to report over the next few days!
For all the fathers out there- HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!! You deserve it!
Well, it's been 3 years! Thank you to everyone for the anniversary wishes! Sean and I actually got to have lunch together today. It was nice! Luckily, I did not have to go to Mexico. Originally, I was supposed to go to Mexico on Tuesday and return on Thursday. But cost-cutting measures prevailed. Good for me!!! (It wasn't a tourist part of Mexico, if you catch my drift.)
I was feeling bad for not including any pictures of the dogs, so there's a new album just for them below.
On the way home, we rolled down the windows since it was nice out. Abby giggled the whole time! She really liked the wind in her hair! It was hard not to smile at the innocence and simple pleasures. Having kids really does make you stop and enjoy the little things.
Sean got me a Wii Fit for my birthday (but I just got it today since they've been out of stock). Abby kept trying to stand on it. She's such a sponge! She watched us play some of the games, and when Sean was playing, she was doing some of the same motions. She was even watching the TV, not Sean. I'll keep ya posted on my Wii Fit results! I hope this helps me get moving! I hate to complain, but it seems like there's not enough time in the day!!! I'm relying on my friends to keep me motivated!
Not much going on today. Back to work! AARGGHHH!! It's hot here, but not as hot as in NY!!! I guess they have a heat wave going on! Thank goodness for air conditioning!!!
I gave Sean his Anniversary/Father's Day present today. (I'm like Ian- I just can't wait!!) I got him something a little non-traditional. I got him a gift certificate to a gun range. He has a few guns that I know haven't been fired since we've been married.
Abby update: We've added another word to our vocabulary: fishy. She has a 20 gallon fish tank in her room. Right now there is only one fish in it. So we feed the fish every morning and say "goodnight" to the fish at night. She's getting pretty good at some of these words, but it may be just me and Sean who can understand her! I know I've needed translation when some of my friends kids talk to me. I'm sure that's what is going on with Abby.
Went to Target this morning (by myself) to pick up a few things and ended up buying a bubble wand for Abby. It was in the One Spot , so it was just $1.00!!!! We already had bubble solution that I bought last year. She just wasn't really interested in it after I bought it, and I guess I forgot that I had it. So this afternoon we spent some time in the sand, the pool, played with some bubbles, back to the sand, and then back in the pool. We stopped playing with the bubbles when she started hitting the dogs with the wand. Not that the dogs care...and she wasn't trying to hurt them- she just couldn't figure out how to make more bubbles!!! It was really fun. Probably more fun for me than for her!! But sadly, no pictures. Sean was in the house putting away our Costco purchases. (Costco is a trek that we take once every 6 weeks or so. It is about 45 minutes away, so we usually have to plan the trip with coolers and all.)
Currently our Abby is passed out in the living room! All that playing wears a girl out!
Tonight we attended a Toyota Boshoku America summer outing. (Pictures are below.) It was held at a local baseball field. It's a pretty nice stadium with covered areas with tables and even a playground area. The admission is usually $5, so it is a great place to take the family without breaking the bank. Plus it is local, so you save on gas! TBA fed us and even provided souvenir bat and baseball! It was great to see some of Mommy's friends from work (as well as some of their kids!). Abby got to play in the grass, walk around, and hang out with the big kids. We didn't last long. It was hot and she got nice and messy from eating. They had her favorites- chicken fingers, mac-and-cheese, and baked beans! Yum! But a lot of it ended up on her (and mom). We also tried a slice of lime tonight for the first time. She actually chewed on it for a few seconds before make the "sour" face!!!! What a pucker!!! I wish we had gotten a picture of that!
One of the interesting things tonight was meeting another Abigail Grace!!! She is apx 9 yrs. old and is a friend of my boss's daughter!!! Small world, huh?
Also, congrats go out to my friend Rhonda who passed her PHR (Proffesional Human Resources) exam today!!! From what I hear it is a 4 hour test regarding all sorts of HR stuff like laws and acts. So, way to go Rhonda!!!
I hate allergy season. It has to be something that is blooming or in the air outside since I don't have any issues while at work in an air conditioned office!!! But the closer I get to home, the worse my allergies get. This morning was bad. I've been dilligent about taking zyrtec each morning. But my eyes were totally itchy this morning to the point that I shouldn't have even tried to put on make-up!!!! By about 9:45 they were ok. Last weekend I went thru several (small) boxes of tissues!!! It's just not fun!
Abby update: not much new today. We bought sippie cups last year that have a straw instead of the valve. She wasn't quite coordinated enough to use them so we put them away for a while. Well tonight at dinner she kept reaching for my water, so I let her drink some. Luckily it was water since it ended up down her front and into her diaper. (If you haven't heard, we simply strip her down to her diaper to feed her. It makes it much easier to clean her up. We also removed the cloth liner for her high chair. Mommy was having too many issues with her OCD about keeping it clean.) So, we pulled out the sippies with straws. And guess what?!?!?!? No issues. She figured it out right away. We only ran into issues when it got almost empty. She kept turning it up like the other sippies. Oh well!!
Tonight we had tons of laughs playing "Finger Puppet Tennis." We've been trying to using kitchen items as toys lately. (Abby likes going through the kitchen cabinets and tends to bring stuff back with her.) We have measuring cups, funnels, and a pampered chef small steamer w/ lid all over our living room (amongst other things)! To distract Abby earlier tonight, Sean picked up the finger puppets that aunt Karen gave us from Ikea (which we love!) and used the steamer lid as a tennis racquet. There are several finger puppets- girraffe, monkey, tucan, dog, etc. So Sean would hit them to Abby and me on the other side of the room. I couldn't help but laugh since he was aiming right for me!!!! Abby started laughing, too! I would throw them back to Sean, but eventually she started trying to throw them to him. She has better aim than I do! We played like that for at least 15 minutes! We then moved on to kickball. We may have a soccer player on our hands! She's pretty good.
In other news: Abby is the oldest kid at daycare for the moment. The older two girls are going to a preschool for the summer. Not sure if they will return in the fall. Both of their mothers are expecting child #2. It seems like Abby is adjusting well.
It finally feels like summer!!! I've enjoyed the extended spring (except for the storms). But it hit 90 degrees today and will continue to rise over the next week. I've heard that it may get up to 100 by the end of next week. So, we turned on the airconditioner for the first time this year.
We've had quite a few storms over the last two days. But tonight, it got really bad just as we were getting home. It got almost pitch black, the wind was REALLY bad. Then the weather radio started going off- first for thunderstorm warnings, then a tornado watch, then tornado warnings. The lightning was very close. I've been a little nervous since our "incident" last year with lightning (picture below). But when the power went off, we decided to move down to the basement. Eventually, the storm passed with no damage to the house. No siding came off!!!! But the power was off for almost two hours. Abby was a trooper! We hung out in her room with the dogs while daddy made dinner on the grill. YEAH daddy!! So, we started dinner by candlelight when the lights came back on. It was nice to not worry about the stuff in the fridge and freezer going bad, but we kept the lights turned off while we ate since it was so relaxing.
Abby update: She's picked up a bad habit- saying "stop that!" TO US!!!! Neither one of us use that phrase, so I'm guessing that she got it from daycare. Mrs. Kelly is working on getting her to stop sucking on her fingers, so I think that may be where she's hearing it. When I try to move her away from something or take something from her, she says "stop that." At first it was funny, but that didn't last long. I guess that's just part of growing up. I've been told that she will be a challenge to us since she's so independent, but that such independence will be a blessing later. I only hope that we last that long!
Our little Abby is trying to learn how to dress herself already. She can put one leg in her pants and really tries to get a shirt on over her head. But the funniest thing is trying to put shoes on!! She can get one of her shoes on, but its easier to put on mommy and daddy's!!! She even got my dressy work shoes on tonight and walked in them!!! They have like a 1.5 inch heel!!! It was hilarious!! (Pictures are below.)
She's also changing her own bedtime ritual. For the last 12-14 months we have done the same thing every night: eat, play, bath, bottle, book, cuddle with mommie/daddy, and rock to sleep. We switched her bottle to a sippie several weeks ago with no issues. But now we look at her books while she drinks her milk (meaning that I read while she turns the pages), then she wants to be put in her crib - AWAKE! No kidding! She snuggles up with a blanket that Sean's mom and dad got her and goes off to sleep. No more cuddles with mommie!!!! It is a good thing that she can go to sleep on her own. (A really good thing!!) But mommie is a little sad.
In other news: I gave blood for the first time today. One of our friends from the Gap got me to round up some Toyota volunteers to give blood in a joint effort. I think we had over 30 people donate or attempt to donate today. I ended up giving a double- where they take twice as much blood, take out the platelets, then give the rest back to you with some saline. The thing that sold me on that idea was that the needle is smaller. The downside is that it takes longer. I was a little tired afterward, and people kept saying that I was pale. But I'm feeling much better after a steak dinner. Thanks, Sean!!!
Not much going on this weekend. We put Abby in her pool this weekend. That was fun! (We're using it to rinse the sand off!!!) She really likes being outside. I mean REALLY likes it!!! And as far as "outside" is concerned, it is the patio. She's not really fond of the grass. But she'll take one of our fingers and lead us over to the door and point/grunt to get us to take her out. She's done this before, but now it is worse. If we don't take her out, she throws a fit. Same thing when we bring her in. And...she had her first popsicle!! It was just a simple orange pop, but she definately liked it! I cut a section off and put it in one of those mesh things. (I just didn't think it would last if I gave it to her on the stick!!!) She sure was a sticky mess!! But she enjoyed it- which may be because I took her out on the patio to eat it!
There have been some questions about Jack and his surgery. For those who don't know the history, Jack is the 20 month old son of Tommy and Amy, friends of ours from TN. I've known Tommy since 1996 and we did quite of bit of traveling together for the Gap. Soon after Jack was born, they found two (I think) holes in his heart, so he had to have surgery to correct that. Then earlier this year, he had tubes put in his ears. This last surgery was to remove his tonsils and adenoids. He is a trooper!!! We have received an update that the surgery went well this morning. He does not require a breathing tube and is eating jell-o. They're going to try to get him to eat some applesauce later. He will be required to spend the night tonight at Children's. I'll include a picture of him from Abby's B-day party. Jack is such a wonderful kid!! We're so lucky to have them all in our lives!
Well, today was a sad day for Sean. About a month ago, he got a letter from Toyota that there are some rust issues with several model years of Tacoma- and his was one of them. So today he took it in to be inspected. We both kinda knew what was going to happen since the rust was so bad. The letter stated that they would either repair it or buy it back at 1 1/2 blue book. So, today Sean had to say goodbye to the truck he has wanted since seeing "Back to the Future." (Marty McFly had one in the movie.) He has been taking pictures of it over the last few weeks. I think he almost cried at the dealership today. They said that several men actually shed tears. They gave him a loaner to use until he gets the check in about 30 days. I was trying to convince him that we should try the mini-van, but to no avail! Since working for a Toyota supplier, I have been in a lot more Toyota vehicles and find them to be a lot nicer than I thought. We have some company vehichles as work (Siennas) that have a really smooth drive.
Abby update: We're learning about temper tantrums! I know! I know! Most of you don't even believe me when I say that she cries, but she's learning to express herself in rather negative ways. She's a very independent little girl. She also doesn't have the vocabulary to ask for what she wants, so there's a lot of pointing and grunting. We've eliminated the ottoman, so she can walk freely between the living and dining rooms. That is proving to be interesting. She likes looking out the windows which are low enough for her to see out of when she's on her tippie toes. We just have to make sure the window fans have been moved. She's also trying to figure out how to open the baby gates. She's definately keeping up busy!! (And we love it.)
Well, another year older. I've learned so much in the last year! Wow!!
I had a nice birthday. I did have to work, but that's OK. Sean took me to lunch and got me flowers, and I got some cool gifts from my friends at work. Desi got me a cool mug with some Godiva chocolate bars, a magnet, and a little book. And Rhonda got me one of those "Edible Arrangements." It's fruit that has been cut up and skewered to look like a flower arrangement!!! It was so cool!!! I say "was" because we started eating it right away. There were chocolate covered bananas, strawberries, cantaloupe, and grapes. Most of it made it home with me.
On another note: Abby just keeps growing and amazing us! We had to remove the area rug from the living room. Last night, she discovered the plants on it and kept trying to "pick" them. It was cute. But she's been tripping over it too, so we removed it last night.
She's also discovered that she can climb onto the ottoman, which we have been using since she started crawling to keep her contained in the living room by blocking the exit to more fun and exciting areas. So now, we have to REALLY watch her!! We've caught her a couple of times almost making it over. Daredevil!
okay as far as the word thing goes, i just keep track of all the words NOT to say....inevitably they repeat it all. Megan is a minick of everyone...so is Ian. But if you have the time to mark down all the words, good for you. I can mabe jot down things in my calendar.
I'm glad you all feel so inspired by the new president, i'll be happy if he leaves military spending alone(that is our livelyhood right now).
I'll give him a chance...i liked Bush (i'm a republican through and through)
Miss you all...Liz you are awesome to go to the gym, i have never step foot in one in my life. I treid the Billy Blanks DVD thing, until i got pregnant with Megan...even before i couldn't make it through the whole thing with the bands, i'm a wimp.
I love the potty chair picture. I have one with you. Precious.
I know she will feel much better and do great opening all those Santa presents. Keep the pictures coming. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Missing all of you.
Hi Liz,
I finally logged into shutterfly again, Im horrible. =) I just saw your comment I will keep my eyes open for it. I just read all of your update, Abby sure is growning up!! Potty training soon, wow. Im sure it FLEW by! I hope you guys have a great Christmas!!! Talk to you soon!
Your blog really is the best! Mark your calendar for 3 years from yesterday to go back and read your entry. The part where you are so excited she can talk and have conversations….yeah, well, you’ll have a different view by then. I remember when I first said “Honey, can you just stop talking until the big hand gets to the 1? Mommy needs just a few seconds of total quiet.”
Look at that beautiful girl! Payton is doing the "touchdown" pose also! Must be something new for this generation of babies.
I forgot my password to Karen's site. Congratulations on the new home!
Give my girl a big hug for me.
It was such joy to see my sweet girl, her wonderful husband and her precious daughter on Friday. I know our trip was a quick one.
I know we left before you had gotten up. But you know me,
I cry everytime I leave you. God only knows how thankfu I am for each of my dear children. Each are special to me in so many ways. God blessed each of you with such beautiful voices. It had to come from Him. I have no such talent. I could only stop and listen to "you" sing at church. Always sing to Abby. Let her hear that beautiful voice. I too have so much to be thankful for I would not know where to start. I am truly thankful that you found Sean who loves you and Abby so much. May God continue to bless your home, your work and your life.
I am thankful you are back home and getting settled again.
Traveling with small children is exhausting. To go across country and back with one has to be quite a job. Both of you are doing a wonderful job with Miss Abby. We are thankful for Sean and what he means to your life and ours. Love all the pictures! They are great!
Oh my dear, you are such a strength to Sean. When he was visiting mom and things were rough emotionally for him, just talking to you helped center him. This has been such a rough road for us all and it is wonderful for the good news of your sis-in-law.
Sean's Aunt Vic
These photos of the pumpkin hunt are Greatttt! I love the one of you squatting down behind her! Both my girls in one great shot!
Sean looks adorable on the swing with Abby. I'm glad you guys did this! She will remember it in photos!
Life changed with one...I'm sure things will change if/when #2 comes along.
I love the new pictures. She is just a living doll in my eyes!
You are both such great parents. I will remember Sean in his travels and you in burning up the road in Kentucky. Hang in there! It doesn't get easier either. Add another one to the mix and see what you feel like!!
LOL,
Mom
You are really good at these postings. I have not worked on mine since July 15th. I have added photos though. I'd rather be outside doing stuff to the yard, house, etc. Glad the headaches have subsided. I desire everyone to continue to remember Layla and family. Love ya.
Mom
Liz and Sean! I love the colors and the accents just tie it all together! Good job!! I am sure she loves it also. There is no time to rest anymore! Each day goes to fast and the week ends are a blur. Get some rest somewhere in there. Both of you!
I am so glad Abby did so well at "big girl" school. I whispered a prayer for all of you on my way to work. It leaves such a dark cloud over a parent to drop one off and them clinging and crying on you. The child, of course, goes on playing after you have left and then you have this sadness all day.
Happy Birthday Poppa Tom! I am sure you guys will enjoy your visit. Sean's a great cook and Liz and Abby can dazzle you with their mommie and daughter antics. Please do remember Layla in your prayers. Family is so important and I need all of them.
We will keep your Sister-in-law in our prayers. Tom loved talking with Abby on the phone. We can hardly wait to see you guys too. Sounded like her first day at school went well for her at least. See you soon.
You just took me down memroy lane! Sleep, or the lack of it, caused me to fall asleep at my desk when we were I worked for the State in Indiana. She will calm back down into a routine then something else will come along. I hope work settles down for you. Everyone is experiencing some sort of difficulties whether it be home, work or personal. I, too, will keep Karen in my prayers. She has been a really good friend to you I know.
Is that what ate Sean's grapes?
Have a safe and blessed week. Not much going on here to mention. Love all of you.
Sean went back to work today and seems to be feeling better. We will be fine. I just don't want to leave Sean all alone during that big of a transition. It will probably be harder on us than on her. Sean's not liking that the new place is a "school" which means that his little girl is growing up. And I agree, but I think it's really the best thing for her. And they're focus is not on academics, so there isn't any pressure. Promise! I think it will help her to be with kids her own age.
Karen, you remember well (but it's a sirloin, not ribeye). And both the car and bath were nice (especially since I didn't have to pay for either)! I think that's the first time Abby and I have done that, but I doubt it will be the last. I get to do a whole lot more traveling over the next few months. But most of the time she sleeps thru the night- even when one of us is away.
Kate, the drive wasn't too bad at 4.5 hours. But it was just too much when it was back-to-back days like that.
No worries! She's a job for us, too! She can be a handfull. But I guess they all can.
I read my last posting/comment. It did not make complete sense.
Nothing unusual there. That's the story of my life lately. She is a "JOY" to you both. A "joy" to all of us. Get some rest and call me when you arrive at your destination.
These watermelon pictures are wonderful! I love the expressions on her face in each picture. I believe her looks have changed since we were up there! I see a video camera in your future also. I wished I had had one when you kids were in high school.
I missed so much music that is lost forever. All of you are so talented. Much love.
I am so glad Sean arrived safely. I know the transition will be difficult, but maybe it won't be too disruptive. Poor Mrs. Kelly.
Make sure she will be available when you have the next one.
Have a blessed weekend together. Love ya!
Karen- The floatie was a gift from my friend Deborah out in CA. (It is nice, but Abby doesn't want to be confined...so we didn't even take it today.) And hopefully we'll get to come up there next month! (And I'm trying to grow my hair out, so I have good days and not-so-good days.)
Kate- The movie wasn't that good. It had some really funny moments, but it was pretty predictable. Don't fret if you don't get to see it.
I'm with Kate on the "get some rest" girl!! I'm a good one to talk though. I'm suppose to be on vacation and I'm out in the yard all morning pulling weeds, cutting the hedges and mowing the grass.
Maybe tomorrow will be more like a vacation! How is left to be revealed.
There will never be the right word or the best word or the best expression for all the joy and blessings You, Sean and Abby bring to our lives. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to visit and keep her even for a day. She is so precious. I see swimming lessons in her future. That pool looks so inviting that I think I'd even brave a swimsuit and get in. Ban all other people from the area, of course.
I think your Mom is right. Teach her to swim, there are so many pools around anymore it's really a safety thing. I hope you're feeling better it's awful to be sick and a toothache is the worse.Abby is really doing so well I love the pictures of her. She is growing so fast.
Glad you are feeling better. Please do teach her to swim. Children really need to know how to swim. I wish our mother had not been afraid of water. The pools always look so inviting. I just try to drink all the water......Maybe someday.
They wouldn't let us take strollers in due to fire hazards (emergency evac stuff). They had backpack things for kids up to 35 pounds that were free, but Abby wouldn't have sat still anyway.
I'm still in some pain. I think I may call the dentist tomorrow and have him look at them just to reassure me that they are OK. The one thing that I'm having a hard time with is the nasty taste from the eugenol. The packing came out on Friday, but there's still this nasty taste in my mouth. Yuck!
You can tell she really enjoyed the aquarium. Did the divers scare her at first? She looks like she's grown so much just since Father's day. I am thankful for cameras, the internet and electricity. It brings all of you closer every day. Much love.
Just look at the talons on that turtle! I love the "girl" in those cute little skirts! She's a doll in anything. I'm glad you're feeling better. Enjoy the weekend. Don't forget to ask Karen about adding video to shutterfly. I have some great ones of Abby.
They measured her laying down, too. But she wasn't too happy about that, so there was a lot of wiggling. I would guess that they may be about the same height.
We keep each diaper bag stocked with non-perrishable stuff, but if we're going to go to Costco, I drop a bag of animal crackers and a sippie in my purse. I just didn't really find a need for the diaper bag after she quit spitting up so much. But we haven't gone anywhere like the zoo or museum where you will be away from your car for a long time. I would probably stock a diaper bag then.
Did they measure her standing up too? it surprises me that Megan is taller by a smidge...but they measure her lying down, so that adds a bit of length...so they must be rather close in height. They have extra wipes at our (now old) doctors office, but the same deal with the no poopy diapers.
I'll be interested to see what the stats are like in Colorado...maybe Megan won't be the 7th percentile for weight there.
Glad everything else went good...Do you keep your purse stocked with baby necessities if you don't use a diaper bag? I have a well stocked diaper bag...everything from food to toys to straws, you never know when you need something to keep your kids entertained.
I think the ravioli is square. Abby is pretty good with just about everything at this point. Some things are easier for her to chew. She doesn't like peaches much.
I saw your update. We pretty much see whichever dr is available at the time. We go on Thursday. I'll have our updates then. Tell your mom and dad we said hi!
ooh, is it the triangle ravioli...i looove that stuff, i need to get some to let Megan try some. Not sure if Ian will eat any, he is beginning to be such a picky eater!
did you check out Megan's stats, i posted them on my site!
I did some research online. There was some correlation between ultrasounds and ear infections. I think that kids in daycare probably get sicker more often than those not.
We were having costco ravioli. It is yummy!
are you serious about the ultrasound thingy and ear infections?!? I had them with both my kids and Ian never once got sick until i had Megan (he picked up the germs at the hospital, i think)
I almost picked Megan some of those new crayon thingys but thought i should wait until i get home.
what was she eating in those pictures...it looked good. Miss you all.
we have megan's 15 month appointment today, we'll let ya know what her stats are.
I am so glad the rash is gone and she's feeling better. Continue to add photos so we can see how she changes. You may not notice the little things we see while so far apart. Love you all.
We really loved having you guys here for the weekend. Abby is a treasure. Those sunglasses put me back in the 70's. She would really be rotten if we lived closer. Don't be strangers.
Love, Mom
Well, it's been an exciting and rewarding 3 years! You have so much to show for such a loving relationship! God has blessed us all with having each of you in our lives! May He give you many, many more. All our love,
Mom and Dad
You are so blessed! Abby is such a beautiful little toddler.
She is so lucky to have you two as parents. Enjoy making the memories. The language barriers will soon be filled with answering many questions. A growing vocabulary is in her future. Watch the excitement in all she does. Plus, take pictures for all of us so far away.
I love the web site and all the wonderful photos of that sweet girl you two produced! You are so blessed. I hope she does not develop the allergies you have either. She is growing and learning so much. I know you two are great parents.
Love,
MOM
Welcome to the Sullivan family album! (Sean, Elizabeth, Abigail Grace, Thomas James, Sophie and Luna!)
Check out the pictures tabs!!
