Bluestone Patio & Spa

This detached spa sits along side of the outdoor kitchen patio.  The small stream runs into the main swimming pool.    Small planting opening have been installed in the new flag stone patio to plant alpine perennials & annuals. I've designed & installed a natural, free form swimming pool with a waterfall, dive rock, natural stone slab steppers, a grey sandstone patio, fog mist system, lighting and plantings. This job is in Pound Ridge NY. 

Rustic Irregular Bluestone Patio
This unique dining courtyard project belongs to Café Matisse, a Zagat rated restaurant located in Rutherford, New Jersey. The courtyard is surrounded by three commercial buildings. My job was to soften the space & create an outdoor dining area for their clients. The theme being eclectitic , artistic & colorful. The project features a two level stone patio, sitting wall, several fountains, pond, stone arch, garden gate, trellis, planters & lush plantings. The biggest challenge was to fit all this into a very small space.

Tennessee Crab Patio & Fire Pit
A view of the spa patio made of grey sand stone flagging. I installed a fire pit in the center. The stone walls will be softened as the plants mature. Rock Garden Perennials and Ground Covers
The Creeping Phlox 'Emerald Blue" is in full bloom, creeping over and softening the edge of the bluestone walkway. Lambs ear is poking its head out of the mature Phlox. Phlox subulata is also known as Creeping Phlox, Flowering Moss, Moss Phlox, Ground Pink, Moss Pinks. I often use it as an edging plant or for planting in cracks and walls or as a early spring accent or to soften various visual transitions be it hardscape or where to plants groupings meet. I sometimes blend it with other groundcovers such as Vinca minor. The landscape planting job is located in Southern New York-Warwick.

Shade Garden in Full Bloom
A spring view of Dicentra spectabilis or Old Fashioned Bleeding Heart in full bloom. Taxus baccatta 'rependans" is in the background. The outstanding characteristic of bleeding hearts is no doubt the shape of the flowers. As the plants' common name suggests, bleeding hearts bear heart-shaped flowers, from which a little "drop of blood" dangles at the bottom. Old Fashioned Bleeding hearts usually reach 2'-3' in height with a similar spread. The plants flowers are either pink or white, and they appear in April or May. Bleeding hearts are thrive in shade gardens. Their foliage tends to die back after the plants are done flowering, leaving behind vacant spots in the planting bed, so I tend to plant late flowering perennials, hosta or ferns in between to fill the voids as the season progresses. This shade planting is located in Orange County-Warwick New York. Serving New Jersey and New York. 

Partial Shade Plantings

This perennial also goes by the following names: Brunnera macrophylla, False Forget-Me-Not, Alkanet, Siberian Bugloss It has plenty of small flowers of the purest blue over a long season. It begins in mid-spring and continues into July, all the while displaying large, heart-shaped leaves. This plant will tolerate drought and will grow in moist to wet soils but prefers a well-drained, loamy or sandy soil. Prefers a pH of neutral. Part Sun, Part Shade, Full Shade. This is another hardy perennial that I frequently use in my planting designs. This landscape planting is located in Orange County-Warwick New York. 

Ground Cover Plantings
Vinca minor. Its common names are "creeping myrtle" and "periwinkle flower." Vinca minor vines stay short, sprawling out over the ground. They typically stand only 3"-6" off the ground. Vinca minor vines put out the bluish-lavender "periwinkle flower" in spring and and sometimes bloom intermittently throughout summer though sparse. Vinca minor vines require good drainage. Plant in partial sun to full shade. Good choice for a ground cover for an area with dry shade; while the plant will grow more vigorously in moist soils, Vinca minor vines are reasonably drought-tolerant once established. This landscape planting job is located in the Lower Hudson Valley.

A view of a terrific groundcover in full bloom. Vinca minor also going by the common names of ""creeping myrtle"" and ""periwinkle"". I've planted some Bearded Iris in the Vinca grouping which will come into full bloom after the Vinca blooms begin to fade. Boxwood form the backdrop of this view. I frequently uses groundcovers in my projects to visually pull the design together. In our zone Vinca thrives in sun, part shade and shade. This garden design is located in Warwick, NY- Orange County.
