Ask them to immediately stop the blasting on Coal River Mountain and preserve our nation's clean energy resources.
Dear Cimbria,
Last week, Massey Energy began dynamiting Coal River Mountain in West Virginia - the site of a proposed 328-megawatt wind farm - to prepare for a massive mountaintop removal coal mining operation.
Today, organizations across the nation are joining forces with RAN to send a powerful message to the Obama Administration to stop the blasting on Coal River Mountain and protect our clean energy resources. With your help, this could be a day of action that makes history.
Coal River Mountain can be a wind farm that provides 85,000 households with electricity, 700 long-term green jobs, gives back $1.7 million in annual county taxes and stands as a model for clean energy across the region. Or, it can be a 6,000-acre dirty energy wasteland.
The fate of Coal River Mountain is up to you. Contact the Obama Administration today. Ask them to immediately stop the blasting on Coal River Mountain and preserve our nation's clean energy resources.
To local residents, Coal River Mountain is a last stand. It is one of the most dangerous examples of blasting for dirty coal and one of the most profound examples of hope that exists in our country. It is a crossroads.
There are two urgent reasons for you to join the cause to save this mountain: because people are in danger, and because we are blowing up, literally dynamiting, one of our nation's most promising sources of clean energy. But really, the most important reason for you to act is because you can.
Coal River Mountain must become our line in the sand. We can no longer allow fossil fuel interests to build more pipelines, belch out more pollution, and destroy more mountains that could become clean energy wind farms. If we can stop the blasting on Coal River Mountain, we can stop talking about a clean energy future and start living in a clean energy present.
Demand that the Obama Administration stop the blasting today.
For the mountains,

Hertz Corp. v. Friend (08-1107)
Oral argument: Nov. 10, 2009
Appealed from: United States Court of Appeals for
the Ninth Circuit <http://www.ca9.uscourts.gov/>
(Oct. 30, 2008)
DIVERSITY JURISDICTION, CITIZENSHIP OF CORPORATIONS
Though federal courts are generally only able to
hear claims arising under federal law, Congress
gives them the power to exercise so called
’Äúdiversity jurisdiction’Äù over any state law
civil claim between citizens of different states.
When a multistate corporation seeks relief in
federal court on the basis of a so-called
diversity action, courts wrestle with exactly
what factors they should look to in determining
the corporation’Äôs citizenship. Here, a group of
California citizens sued Hertz Corporation in
California state court alleging violations of
California’Äôs state labor laws. Hertz sought to
remove the case to federal court. The Ninth
Circuit concluded Hertz was a California citizen
and denied removal jurisdiction. This case
presents the Supreme Court with the opportunity
to lay out a specific test for determining
corporate citizenship for the purposes of
diversity jurisdiction.

Statement of Deputy Director Leslie Samuelrich: Community Rebuffs Nestlé, Demonstrates Power of the Grassroots
After an extended grassroots campaign, Nestlé is finally removing 23 bottled water test wells from a wildlife management area in Shapleigh and
Shelly Gobielle and her neighbors first discovered the wells a year and a half ago, three years after Nestlé’s under-the-radar installation. Upon realizing that Shapleigh was likely one of the next sites for Nestlé’s water extraction for its Poland Spring brand bottled water, residents approached town officials with their concerns about what bottling would do to the local ecosystem. Their words fell on deaf ears, as Nestlé had already lobbied for and secured the support of the Shapleigh town officials.
The only option was for residents to take matters into their own hands, forming the group Protect Our Water and Wildlife Resources (POWWR). Members hit the streets and went door to door educating the public and signing enough petitions to call a town meeting, held four months ago. Residents in both Shapleigh and the neighboring town of passed ordinances that asserted the right of townspeople to control their own water and to prohibit commercial water extraction, a reality that can at last be assured.
A heartfelt congratulations are due to Shelly, POWWR members, and the residents of Shapleigh and Newfield who volunteered their time and immense energy to protecting their water resources.
This is a watershed moment, so to speak, in the effort to restore local control over water. Earlier this month another community group, the Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation, secured a major court victory against Nestlé after nine years of legal battles and Nestlé appeals. The settlement requires Nestlé to dramatically reduce pumping during summer months at a critical well site in , and prohibits the corporation from increasing pumping levels in the future.

Public Involvement Needed to Develop Groundwater Protection Ordinances
Posted by: "Public Relations Remick Museum" pr@remickmuseum.org
Mon Jul 27, 2009 7:16 am (PDT)
Just a reminder to the community that the Green Mountain Conservation Group and the Lakes Region Planning Commission will be at the Remick Museum and Farm this Thursday, July 30, 2009. Towns in the Ossipee Watershed now have a great opportunity to receive free planning assistance through a grant from the NH DES Local Source Water Protection Program.
The Green Mountain Conservation Group and the Lakes Region Planning Commission are holding two work sessions that will focus on creating Aquifer Protection Ordinances for the towns of Effingham, Freedom, Madison, Ossipee, Tamworth and Sandwich. These work sessions are scheduled for July 30th and August 13th from 6-8pm, at the Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm in Tamworth. Public input is needed to craft an ordinance that is specific to the needs of your town, while offering enhanced regional protection of our shared drinking water. Attendance at these work sessions is important in order to demonstrate your town's interest in this project.
These sessions are open to the public and town planners, conservation commissioners, selectmen, local businesses, public water suppliers, and other interested individuals are encouraged to attend. Please RSVP to GMCG at
gmcgnh@roadrunner.com or 539-1859.The Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm is located at 58 Cleveland Hill Road, Tamworth, NH and is easily accessible from Routes 16 and 25.
