Re: white cat
Hi

I bought a white cat at the show.  The name is 'Burdekin Wonder 'Lakeland' x c. Lucille Small 'marshal'
It had 3 blooms on a spike that had not opened.  They did not open and one fell off.  I am thinking it did not like being moved and that combined with the cold caused my problem.  Otherwise the plant looks healthy.  It is one from Krull-Smith.

Any comments would be appreciated.

thanks

Jane

Re: red freckled leaves on seedling
Laelia purpurata var. werckhauseri are known for acceptance of extreme temperatures (105 deg. F - 25 deg. F).  Taking this into account the red freckles would not be caused by extreme cold as seen in some plants within the Cattleya alliance.  Red spotting on the leaves can also be a sign of a very dark flower, which this variety does not have.  One other consideration could be very high light.  But since you mention that only the older leaves are showing signs of red freckles, this would not be the case either.  I have attached a photo from OrchidWiz of this species.  Could you provide a photo of your plant?

red freckled leaves on seedling
We have a L. purpurata werkhauseri x L. purpurata werkhauseri that we got at one of the meetings and it seems to be developing reddish colored freckles on the old leaves. There has been new growth on a pseudobulb that looks fine so far. It is in a 2" plastic pot and could probably use repotting. Are the spots something we should worry about since they seem to be on older growth?

Re: Paph parentage
According to OrchidWiz praetans is now called glanduliferum. The hybrid name is Paph. Poulsbo and it was registered in 2004. Grow in low light, fertilize lightly weekly, intermediate to hot, keep moist. It was mentioned that kolopakingii can be topheavy and a shallow clay pot was suggested.
Re: Paph parentage

Hi Jim,

As Eileen mentioned in her reply, they are both species.  These two species have not been bred according to current registered hybrid names.  If they have been bred together, a name has not been registered yet.  Hope this helps.

Potting Media

So many of you have requested our potting formula for Paphs and Phrags*. Below is one we have used with great success.   We invite you to try it!

2.5 gal. fine fir bark (soak in water overnight)*

2 gal. sponge rock*

1 gal. fine charcoal*

2 cups sand*

2 cups lime or oyster shell

1.5 gal. of loose tree fern

4 cups coir (add for seedlings only)

½ cup bloodmeal (omit for seedlings)

½ cup bonemeal (omit for seedlings)

Re: Paph parentage

Thanks, Eileen.  I've since found that kolopakingii is a species, but could not locate praestans.  I'll check further; and look forward to Julio's result from orchidwiz.

Re: Paph parentage
Eileen here to answer your question regarding the hybrid paph you have. Both parents are species so there are no other names in the mix. The cross may have a name or not. I'll have Julio check into it on OrchidWiz when he gets a chance and report back to you.
Paph parentage
Can anyone tell me the parentage of paph. kolopakingii and of paph. praestans?  I have a hybrid of kolopakingii x praestans and need culture suggestions.

diatomaceous earth
I recently purchased a 4 pound bag of diatomaceous earth insect killer.  4 lbs would last me about a hundred years.  I am willing to share some with you at the August meeting (I'll be in NY in July), if you'll bring a plastic bag or other container.  Please let me know if you're interested.
