Kyle Kimura was one of 32 athletes who qualified for the 2011 USA Swimmings Diversity Camp at the Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Colorado Springs, May 5th to 8th. The qualifying times were very fast so to be selected was a great honor for Kyle. As Kyles coach, I was able to attend the camp as well. Kyle said the training is very hard at that high of an altitude, he found it hard to breath just warming up! Think of how flat Tampa is, then imagine swimming 3 hour practices under the shadow of Pikes Peak (the highest spot in the continental states). While Kyle was busy practicing in OTC pool, I was spending up to 6 hours a day in class rooms, learning things from some of the brightest minds in swimming to today! The last day of camp the swimmers & coaches toured the Garden of Gods State Park. Kyle & myself had a great time at this camp & both of us came away with an experience of a life time.
USA Swimming has announced the roster for the 2011 Diversity Select Camp. Thirty-six swimmers from across the country have been selected for the camp, which will take place May 5-8 at the Olympic Training Complex in Colorado Springs. Westchases Kyle Kimura was amoung 5 swimmers from Florida to make the camp. Each spring, USA Swimming invites athletes from under-represented populations to participate in a three-day camp program at The Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, which includes pool training, motivational and education sessions and team-building activities. Selection is based on times swum at USA Swimming-sanctioned events. The qualifying times are very fast too!
The purpose of the camp is to instill a vision of success and inspire athletes from ethnically under-represented populations to become leaders in the sport. It is USA Swimming’s goal to empower athletes from ethnically under-represented populations and their coaches to:
This year’s pool of applicants was especially strong and deep, making qualification more competitive than ever. Everyone at Westchase is very proud of Kyle!
Based on their performances at this Springs Florida Swimming Age Group Championships, Paige Carter & Kyle Kimura have been selected to attend the "All Star " Dual Meet between Florida Swimming LSC & Florida Gold Coast Swimming LSC, in Ft Peirce the weekend of March 25-27.
