Selection is based on times swum at USA Swimming-sanctioned events. The qualifying times are very fast too!

Kyle Kimura & Coach Kelley Allen Attend Camp At OTC....

Kyle Kimura was one of 32 athletes who qualified for the 2011 USA Swimmings Diversity Camp at the Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Colorado Springs, May 5th to 8th. The qualifying times were very fast so to be selected was a great honor for Kyle. As Kyles coach, I was able to attend the camp as well. Kyle said the training is very hard at that high of an altitude, he found it hard to breath just warming up! Think of how flat Tampa is, then imagine swimming 3 hour practices under the shadow of Pikes Peak (the highest spot in the continental states). While Kyle was busy practicing in OTC pool, I was spending up to 6 hours a day in class rooms, learning things from some of the brightest minds in swimming to today! The last day of camp the swimmers & coaches toured the Garden of Gods State Park. Kyle & myself had a great time at this camp & both of us came away with an experience of a life time.

Little Flippers Goes Year Round.....

For years I have run the Little Flippers Group from May to October. This was the only seasonal group we had at Westchase. The problem was that the kids in Little Flippers love swimming but most are not ready to move on to the year round swim team when it ends. So because of this we would loose many swimmers or the kids would have to stop until May and not retain all the skills they have developed over the summer. So I am glad to announce that The Little Flipper's are joining the other swim team groups as a year round program! I hope to see that group grow and become the first step for many swimmers journey through the structure of the Westchase Swim Team!

2009 Westchase All-Star Team Edit
May 3, 2009
Florida Swimming once again defeated Florida Gold Coast at the All-Stars Meet in Indian River Community College on April 4-5 in Fort Pierce, Florida. The final score was Florida Swimming 734 and Florida Gold Coast 538. The scoring system only awarded points to the top two swimmers from each team regardless of overall place and only the top three relays.

Florida Swimming selected 135 swimmers from various swim clubs in the state to compete on their all-star team. The team was separated into three age groups, 10 and Under, 11-12 and 13-14, for boys and girls. Twelve swimmers from Tampa Bay Aquatics (TBAY) competed on Florida Swimming’s All-Star team, six of whom came from the TBAY Westchase swim team. The TBAY Westchase swimmers earned points that contributed to Florida Swimming’s win and brought home several medals.

Among Girls 11-12, Michelle Turek represented the women of Westchase by taking first place in the 50 and 100 Free, third in the 200 Free and seventh in the 500 Free. She also assisted the Girls 11-12 to place first in the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay.

Among Boys 11-12, Kyle Kimura placed in five events, the 50 and 100 Fly, 200 Free, 200 IM and 500 Free, and third place in the 100 Free. Kyle helped the Boys 11-12 team to place first in the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay. Austin Sellers placed second in the 100 Breast, and took third place in the 50 Breast and 100 IM. Austin also assisted Boys 11-12 to place third in the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay. Jared Young, a young 11-year-old, placed sixth in the 200 IM, seventh in the 50 Back and eighth in the 100 Back.

Among Boys 10 and Under, Tristan Hazlett placed third in the 100 Free, fifth in the 50 Free, sixth in the 200 IM and eighth in the 200 Free. Tristan also helped the Boys 10 and Under place second in the 200 Free Relay. Jabari Ramsey placed fourth in the 50 Breast and seventh in the 100 Breast.

Congratulations to our Westchase TBAY All Stars!

Little Flippers Starts May 4th

Little Flippers Starts May 4 - Actions
May 3, 2009

May 4 marks the start of Little Flippers, a program for children who have progressed through swimming lessons and want a little more attention paid to technique and building endurance. If you are not quite at a competitive level, this is the opportunity to be under my watchful eyes and make some big improvements over the summer. We work on all four strokes, dives and turns for each stroke while trying to keep the “fun” in the fundamentals of swimming.

The Little Flippers practice Monday through Thursday from 3-3:45 p.m. You may attend three days, with the fourth being designated a rain make-up day. If your child participated in Little Flippers last season, there is no need for an evaluation; however, all new candidates for the program must pass a swim test before registering. A child must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke and have some breaststroke and butterfly skills to qualify.

The TBAY competitive swimmers are busy getting ready for the long course season. Typically meets are held in 50 meter pools and the swimmers have fewer walls to hang on. Our swimmers will be in Winter Haven, Largo, St. Pete and Lakeland and the Junior Olympics will be in Ft. Myers in late July. After an excellent short course season, we are looking forward to the summer events.

Swimmers of the Month for April are Kendal Allen for the Novice group and Christiaan Hazlett for the Age Groupers. Kendal had a great Area 3/5 meet in Sarasota, where she dropped so much time in her events they almost cancelled the Daylight Savings time change. Kendal’s time in the novice group is almost over as she is slated to move up to the more challenging Age Group practices soon.

Christiaan Hazlett is new to the team, but in the few months he has been swimming with us, he has shown he is a leader in the program. All of Christiaan’s hard work and dedication helped him have a terrific Area 3/5 meet as well. Both of these young athletes stood out in April to earn their Swimmer on the Month honors.

Another group I coach is the Westchase TriGals, who have had an increase in numbers as they start serious training for local and regional races such as St. Anthony’s and Danskin. These ladies are very enthusiastic about improving their swimming skills and endurance. We wish them luck in all their upcoming competitions!

Swim Team Celebrates the Holidays

The Westchase Swim Team celebrated the holidays at their Annual Christmas Party.  This was a fun action-packed party filled with Holiday Swim Team traditions .  The Annual ut-Eating Contest was a big hit with the kids who were covered all over with powdered donuts on their faces.  There were also Santa Sack races on the Volleyball Field that proved to be a blast!  This year, there was a special reading of Twas the Night Before A Swimmer’s Meet by April Reinhart, President of the Westchase Swim Team Booster Club.  Dinner was served and a kids Christmas gift exchange followed.  Merry Christmas to All, they had a really fun night.

As a special treat, we wanted to share our Night Before a Swim Meet with the rest of the Westchase neighbors:

'Twas The Night Before A Swim Meet

"Twas the night before a swim meet and all through the house

Every creature was stirring maybe even a mouse

The team towels were hung outside with great care

In hopes that they would dry in the chilly night air

The swimmers were nestled all snug in their beds

While visions of ribbons danced in their heads

And mamma in her kerchief and I in my cap

Had just settled down for a short winter's nap

(those swim meets start early ya' know!)

When out of the darkness my alarm clock started to beep

I sprang from my bed to get ready for the meet

Away to the pool we flew like a flash

Warm-ups are early, gotta' get there quite fast

The moon shone on the water both steaming and still

To get into the pool takes dedication and will

When what to my wondering eyes should appear

But a little red truck bringing someone near

With a little old driver, so quick on approach

I knew in a moment it must be Kelley our Coach

More rapid than eagles his swimmers they came

And he whistled and shouted and called them by name:

"Now Austin, now Jared, now Margret and Bella

On Kendal, on Regan, on Victor and Noah

To the top of the platform, to the top of the wall

Now swim away, swim away, swim away all!"

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know that I had nothing to dread;

He paced the whole pool as he went straight to his work,

And filled all the lanes; then turned with a jerk,

And shouting "Stroke, Stroke" he encouraged them all

They did breaststroke, they did backstroke ,yes, they covered them all

And giving a nod, back to his truck he did go

Leaving his swimmers and parents to know

TBAY Westchase is great and our coach is the best

Competing to stay on the top of the rest

But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight,

"Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night."

We also had Richi Bui and Zuri Ramsey invited to swim on relays too. Jabari Ramsey had a great meet winning the 11 and 12 Boys 100 Breaststroke, 50 Breaststroke & 100 IM. Ava Carter won the 10 & Under Girls 50 yard Breaststroke as well. Top swimmers of the meet in each age group will represent Florida Swimming in the annual All-Star Meet later this month in Ft. Peirce. This year 3 Westchase swimmers will be attending. Jabari Ramsey, Ava & Paige Carter. This was a great way to end our season!
