Temple Terrace Garden Club - Educational Grants

Planting Seeds Through Education Grants

For the 2013 fiscal year TTGC will be providing four educational grants to Elementary Schools in Temple Terrace toward horticultural education in the amount of $500 each. Contact Sandra Johnston for more information: mrsslj@hotmail.com.

2012 Educational Grants:

The Temple Terrace Garden Club Grant Selection Committee met at the home of committee chair, Sandra Johnston, on July 27, 2011. Those attending were: Cliff Brown, Cheri Donahue, Joyce Formica, and Mary Harkness. After reviewing the submitted grant proposals, the following grants were funded for the 2011-2012 school year:

1. Riverhills Elementary, teacher Amy Shell, “Dragonflies Garden Club,” $250.00. The students in the club are heavily involved in the planting, nurturing, harvesting, and the utilization of herbs, fruits, and vegetables that they grow. The funds will be used to purchase seeds, organic fertilizer, hoses, and be applied towards the purchase of three time lapse cameras to document the growth from planting to harvest.

2. Lewis Elementary, teacher Marlene Gutierrez, “Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, It’s Off to Grow We Go,” $250.00. The grant will supply funds to purchase a Grow Lab II compact garden to be used with Gifted Science students in grades 1-5. The students will explore the realms of how things grow and change, the stages of living things, the basic needs of all living things, and the interdependence of living things on their environment.

3. Temple Terrace Elementary, Principal Carol Kay Brown, “Learning Garden and Service Project,” $500.00. Multiple gardens are maintained by students in all grade levels. They are partnered with Metropolitan Ministries and the Spring for Battered Women and Children. The program is ongoing and involves the entire school, parents, volunteers, and community leaders. The garden is used as an outdoor teaching laboratory where reading, writing, math, science, and social studies are integrated. The program has received a lot of press and media coverage. This grant will allow the purchase of needed materials and supplies. The committee commended them for their efforts and awarded them additional funds.

4. Greco Middle School did not submit an application this year.

Temple Terrace Garden Club Sponsors children at Wekiva Youth Camp

Temple Terrace Garden Club, Inc., sponsors attendance to the summer program at Wekiva Youth Camp each year. This is a residential nature camp for 3rd through 8th grade youngsters, located in Wekiva Springs State Park, Apopka, Fl.

Bee Project

At the June 2010 meeting, we joined forces with the Temple Terrace Women's Club, Inc., in a joint effort, toward the propagation of bee pollinated plants to help re-populate the declining population of bees.

Our plan is to work with nurseries to help us grow specific plants that attract bees. After they have grown to suitable size, we will then sell them to home owners in the community for planting. We will also work toward educating the public about the benefits that bees provide.

In October 2010, a section in Woodmont Park was devoted and planted for bees, along with an informational plaque. See below for photos.

Progress is taking place. At the TTGC Spring Market to be held on March 21, 2011, there will be a separate table set-up specifically for the education on the benefits of bees. Plants will also be available for sale that attract bees. We will encourage those in our community to help make an effort toward the survival and re-population of these much needed creatures. Nature can not sustain itself without them.
