USSSA Tournament (Austin, TX)

We started off slow with a dissapointing loss to the Wildcats. We came out lethargic and were never able to find our stride. In our next two games, the players decided that that was not going to happen again. We jumped on both the Rams and the Lightning early, and never looked back, ending Saturday with a record of 2-1. On Sunday we played a Rising Stars team that simply hustled. They were skilled and worked very hard. It was a close game at halftime, but in the second half the game got away from us. With only seven guys, and four of them having four or more fouls, we simply ran out of gas.

Our team needs to continue to improve on doing the little things: blocking out, help defense, defensive position, ect. We need to do those things on a more consistent basis. Desmond played very hard throughout the tournament and I never have to worry about him giving 110%. It was also great to have CJ back, as he gave us a much-needed spark in our last game. I am looking forward to our practice on Wednesday where we can continue to make strides in the right direction.

MAYB Regional Championships (San Marcos and Hays, TX)

Our players started off hot this last weekend. We won our first two games in exciting fashion. We continue to be a team that does not panic, and comes from behind and wins games. However, I would like us to learn how to put teams away early. We played in the top gold bracket and showed that that is where we belong. We lost two close games to the Legends. The first one would have given us a championship game birth. The second one was for third place. All in all, I was pleased with our team's effort but we have to play smarter and learn to take care of the basketball. This weekend we might be able to get some revenge against a team that we lost to this weekend so I am looking forward to that.

USSSA Tournament (Austin, TX)

Our players came out ready to play this weekend. We continued to solidify our reputation as a team that does not get flustered and can come back and win games. We went 3-0 on Saturday, which put us in first place in our pool. We were missing CJ, who was at a prestigious camp in Houston, and Desmond who was out with injuries to his ribs and hips. I was very proud of our players for taking up the slack and doing what it took to win those first three games.

Basketball wise, we introduced a 1-3-1 defense which gave us some success. We still need to improve on it, but showed that there is potential to that defensive set. Our three-point shooting leaves something to be desired. I am not a believer in telling players that they can never shoot them, but unless our percentage improves dramatically something will have to be done. That being said, we shoot a high percentage from two's and need to make sure that the vast majority of our shots our from that range. Also, we need to look to the post more. All our posts are capable of scoring from down low. In particular, Cole played exceptionally well this weekend rebounding and scoring. He ended the tournament with a double-double in scoring and rebounding. We have to get Cole, and our other posts more touches down low.

On Sunday, we suffered our only loss in the tournament. It was a very odd game. JT suffered an injury to his neck that left him out for the rest of the game. It was a very scary situation, but no long term damage was done. I pray that JT has a speedy recovery. On that note, the safety of my players is my number one concern and responsibility.

Looking forward to this week, I am excited to be getting CJ back, and hopefully Desmond, depending on how he is healing. Our team continues to make great strides and it is fun to watch.

Gym Rats Tournament

We were just a few plays away from being really successful this past weekend. All of our players played really hard. In particular, Desmond and Cole played really well and were our only true posts in the tournament. With numerous rebounds and scoring, they really gave us a boost. Our guards looked good at times, but we need to be more consistent.

We ended up winning the silver bracket handidly. Although I wish we could have been in the Gold Bracket, I am still proud of our team and the way they took care of business in our last two games. That being said, we are really close from being a good team to a great team. With just a little more practice and a will to win, I see us doing great things in the future.

USSA Tournament (San Antonio)

We went 3-2 in the tournament, getting 3rd place. We lost to the 2nd place team by three in the first game, which was disappointing because I think we are a better team, even if we were short-handed. We went on to win all three games on Sunday and I was really proud of the players' effort in bouncing back after a rough start.

I am glad we decided to play this weekend. It was a great opportunity for the players there to all get some valuable minutes and a chance to improve. That being said, I am looking forward to getting the whole team back together and moving forward as a unit.

MAYB Tournament

We definitely continued to improve with this tournament. We beat every team in the tournament, including a sweet game of revenge against the Starz. In that game we showed mental and physical toughness, in particular Cole played really well down low. The championship game was played immediately following and our players were obviously tired. Against a Liberty Hill team that we had beaten by fifteen the day before, we came out flat and just ran out of gas. I will take the blame for the players being tired because I volunteered us to play an extra game even though it was back to back. My philosophy is that the more we play, the more we improve. It might have cost us the championship in this particular tournament, but I believe it will help us down the road.

Blue Bonnet Classic Tournament

Our second tournament of the season was an exciting one. It started off with an ugly victory, as we shot a low percentage from the field. However, we learned that if we keep playing hard and play together, we can still win a game regardless of how we shoot. The second game was very exciting. It was good to see certain players step up such as JT, Anthony, and Christian. It was definitely a team effort, but those three players really took their game to another level. In addition to them, Cole and Desmond had timely rebounds down the stretch that helped us pull out a victory in dramatic fashion. Our semi-final game against the D1 Ambassadors Bostic was a hard fought game by both teams. With several lead changes, and offensive runs by both teams, the fans definitely got their money's worth. Austin gave us a spark of offense as he shot a high percentage, scoring 20 points. The game could have gone either way but costly turnovers down the stretch gave team Bostic the edge. Although we lost, I was very proud of each and every one of our players. This tournament was a good warm-up for our MAYB tournament coming up this weekend. As a team, we made great strides in the tournament and I consider it a success.

Tip-Off Classic Tournament

With our first tournament behind us, there is a lot to be optimistic about. It was my first chance to see our players in live game action, and I liked what I saw. Each player brings something unique to the table and I firmly believe that as we come together as a team, we will be very tough to beat. We went 1-2 in the tournament, but more importantly than the record, we got better. We are still in the development process as a team and with hard work, I know we will get where we need to be. Our players are capable of playing at a high level and I am excited to see it happen.

2010 ROSTER TEAM GRIEF

Austin Grief - Grief is a guard who is comfortable playing the point or the shooting guard. He is tough on defense, and has a great mid-range and three point jump shot. He can take you off the dribble and make plays for himself, and for others.

Christian Bartley - Bartley is a superior athlete. His vertical leap and foot speed speak for themselves. He has a good touch around the basket, but is capable of slamming it home. Although a post, he can take it coast to coast when he has to.

Ryan Cunningham- Cunningham is a crafty post, with a soft touch. He uses his body well and comes up with quite a few rebounds. He sees the floor well and makes good passes from the post position.

C.J. Taylor - Only an 8th grader, but does not play like it. He has exceptional ball handling skills and a respectful jump shot. He is a hustler and plays good on-the-ball pressure defense.

Desmonde Lowe - Lowe is a banger underneath. He uses his body well and scraps for rebounds and put-back opportunities. Although a great clean up player, he can also make his own shot in the post. He has deceptive quickness, making him a very good post defender.

Johnathan Brinson - Brinson is a very tough player. He can beat you from the post or from the guard spot. He shoots a spectacular percentage and is capable of a double-double everytime he plays. He has great deal of natural talent, and a good basketball IQ.

JT Lopez-Roeper - JT is a very poised guard. He has good handles and is very trustworthy with the basketball. He is a good passer and his defense is solid. He knows when to make a play and when to calm things down. A very composed player.

Grayson Cooke - Cooke is a hustler. He gets after it on defense and is in the mix when there is a loose ball. He has a lot of heart and only knows how to go one speed, hard. When open, he can knock down the mid-range jumper.

Cole Rogers - Rogers is a very gifted post. He has great moves and is capable of shooting from anywhere on the court. He rebounds exceptionally well and is always a spark on offense. He is a smart defender and is not scared of anybody down low.

Anthony Patino - Patino is capable of playing the post or the three-guard spot. He can hit the open shot, and also make his own shot. Defensively, he is able to match up with a post or a guard, a very solid player all-around.
