PRICING YOUR HAND MADE GOODS….
*This is not a price list….
Thus the term “HOME MADE” comes into play when we are talking about crafts.
Now, remember I am not an expert at pricing items. This has been a long time delema of crafters “What price do we put on our talents”..
You must take into consideration every single item that is used to create your craft.
If you sew……The sewing machine used, thread, buttons, zippers, fabric, interfacing, etc.
If you make stuffed animals by hand or by machine---The sewing machine, needles, fabric, thread, buttons, eye pieces, nose pieces, swivel joints, felt, stuffing..etc.
If you make jam—the electric it takes to cook the jam, the containers the jam will go in, the berries, sugar, lemon juice, pectin, labels, etc…
If you make anything there are a number of items used to create that project..Everything must be accounted for and costs something. Nothing is free including your time and effort and especially not your TALENT!
Consider your fabric..how old is it? If you purchased a yard of fabric and have it laying around for 5 years you do not charge what you paid for it 5 years ago you charge what it would cost you to purchase that piece of fabric today..Some older fabrics are discontinued or are considered collectors items such as Vintage Fabrics, Some Daisy Kingdom fabrics, some are very old and very hard to find, some panels, some fat quarters, some types of fabrics..
All of this has to be taken into consideration when pricing your merchandise.
Lets say I make teddy bears or bunnies. I need to purchase a package of eyes. They usually don’t come in packages of 2 eyes, they come in a package of 4-6 sets..They may cost $6.00 for the package..I would then say there are 4 sets of eyes (2 single eyes per set or 4 sets 8 units), I would divide the sets by the cost lets say 4 sets of 2 at $6.00 a package..I would charge you 1.50 per set of eyes plus ½ again which would be .75cents. =2.25 per set. Profit on a package of eyes would then be $3.00 per package. My rule of thumb is divide the number of pairs or units by the cost of the package then add ½ the cost of one unit to the price of each set or unit..
You still have thread, stuffing and those swivel joints if you use them, same applies to those as far as cost. If the bag of stuffing cost 4.00 and you used ½ of the stuffing you charge them ½ which is 2.00 + ½ again which is $1.00=$3.00 per ½ bag = $2.00 profit on the bag…(you can charge more is you want)!
Lets say a person asks you to make them a quilt. You need 1/8 th of a yard for each panel in the quilt..Most fabric stores will not cut less than ¼ of a yeard so you are stuck with the remnants which are actual waste (when doing a project for someone else you can not consider the left overs “scrap” fabric) WHY?
Because you had to buy it to make the commissioned piece, it was not something you would have purchased otherwise.
When I draw up my contract to commission a project there is a little box at the bottom of the page that says………..
Please check this box if you would like your left over materials returned to you.
Please sign your last name over the box if you DO NOT want the left over materials returned to you……………………….
This is important because If they want those fabrics I will charge them for the full ¼ yard. If they do not want them I will consider it profit. I wills till charge them for the full ¼ yard of fabric I had to purchase even if they do not take the remnants. Its called PROFIT.
Now lets discuss your “TALENT”….
Handmade items have more value to people than mass produced items and therefore should be priced accordingly.
Making handmade items is a craft or a talent, it can not be compared to mass production of goods in a factory. First of all the quality is much greater, second of all usually the materials used are of considerably higher quality, third the buyer is paying for your “CRAFT” or your “TALENT” to make something they otherwise could not make themselves or do not have the time to make.
The reward for this “CRAFT” or “TALENT” is the price you put upon the item.
We often undervalue our own skills or talents because to us its easy to make these things or to produce this exceptional item. Its as simple as…
Handmade items have more value than mass produced items and the price should reflect this value.
I keep a list of all the materials I use in any given project. Yes, right down to measuring the lace and keeping track of the fabric, I will even estimate the value of the remnants by what use they have to me after the project is finished and the condition they are in.
Example: fussy cut fabrics to me have no use but minimal scraps. Therefore they go into a useless box of scraps which I will pick through if I need a tiny scrap for something. Useless for any other projects.
I keep track of fabric, lace, buttons, interfacing, stabilizer, thread batting, stuffing, ears, noses, eyes, zippers, snaps, bias tape, hem lace, every single item used, it all has a cost to me and reflects in my pricing of items I make………
DON’T UNDERSELL YOURSELF OR YOUR TALENT TO CREATE BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE ITEMS THAT OTHERS ARE UNABLE TO MAKE THEMSELVES….
I have a question for you…
Lets say you had 2 quilts, you were selling them both..One your Great Grandmother made for your Mother when she was a child, it was then handed down to you..
The other was purchased at a local fine linens shop..Lets say you paid $150.00 for it..
Which one would you place more value on regardless of the cost it took to make it???
Pretty easy answer wouldnt you say! So, remember that what people are paying for is your "talent" something they do not have. Remember that your "talent" is worth something not only to you but to them. Its no different than you paying for something you are unable to make yourself such as a painting for example, if you are not a painter then you are paying for the painters talent which is something you do not have yourself, the talent to paint! Most people are willing to pay a fair price for your merchandise, for those who are not they will shop elsewhere.
Dont quibble over your prices, they are what they are and that is that. If you go into a grocery store you can not make a deal with the grocer to purchase items for less than they are marked as so its the same for your items. Dont be rude, be firm...! Dont be insulted, everyone has their own limits of what they are willing to pay for any given item..they can look for a better deal elsewhere. no problem!!! Its always a good idea when pricing an item taht you ask some friends what they would pay for it, then consider your asking price from there..
Remember that things made today will be Tomorrows treasures..

Every Anita Goodesign embroidery party has a chocolate break in the afternoon. The treats vary from chocolate fountains, to cookies, brownies and candy. After doing these shows for years I’ve noticed that the chocolate break creates as much excitement as the embroidery projects! That was the inspiration for these luscious designs. There are 15 different 5”x7” sweet treats in this collection. There is everything from a chocolate cupcake to a banana split. Each design was created with whimsical applique fabric and was adorned with delicate flowers. For our project we embroidered these designs on an apron. These designs will look delicious on whatever you embroider them on.
If you loved the Vintage Christmas Stockings you are going to love our new “In the Hoop” collection, Christmas Stockings 2. Last year we created a collection called “Connecting Flowers” which combined beautiful applique flowers with quilting designs. Inspired with that collection, we wanted to bring you something new for autumn this year titled Connecting Autumn. The first part of the collection consists of connecting quilt blocks with autumn motifs. There are 16 different designs in 2 different sizes each that include a unique squaring stitch making it much easier to create the perfect quilt. There are also 3 different running stitch blocks that you can use for checkerboard style quilts or to create a unique wall hanging that we showcased for our project. These designs were created so they could be rotated at a 45-degree angle for our finished project. We also include all of the necessary pieces to make a square quilt with these same designs. The second part of the collection consists of all the original designs edited and rotated so that they are straight.

When we were designing Vintage Elegance we wanted to create a light and airy collection that includes cutwork and applique. We started by choosing our fabric. We picked bright floral prints in pinks, blues and greens. We then chose thread colors to compliment the fabric. When we were digitizing the collection we chose cutwork stitches, light contour stitches, applique and candlewick stitches. When we stitched the designs we used the fabric we chose for the project in the designs as applique material so everything ties together perfectly. When you stitch these designs you will love how light they are, they will look great on tea towels, tablecloths and even clothing.

This is our third scarf end collection. We previously released Vintage Scarf Ends and Floral Scarf Ends. This collection is different because it uses applique in the designs for more colorful options. There are 12 different designs and each design comes in 3 different sizes. There are also 12 different individual designs to add to your projects or use by themselves.
Instead of a scarf you can also make a tea towel or a table runner. The table runner option is the same as a scarf with a beautiful design on each end. The table runner is my favorite project. The projects are very easy to create and work with virtually any fabric type.

The Songbirds collection is like two design sets in one! The first part of the design is 14 realistic and hand shaded songbirds perched on branches and ready for any project you can think of. The second part of the design is a 12-block tile scene that combines all of the birds in one beautiful arrangement. The 12-block tile scene comes in 3 file sizes: from 6.7"x 7.2" at the largest to 4.8" x 5.1" at the smallest worth the effort! The unique part of this collection is the stippling. Stippling is not easy to do free motion so we decided to add it to the designs. The tutorial will demonstrate how to create the blocks using Warm and Natural Stabilizer in your hoop for a true quilted look. |
| Pond Critters (28 Designs) $39.95 |
|
This collection is cute for children of all ages. There are 12 cute pond critters that look great on whatever you embroider them on. We decided to embroider the designs on t-shirts, but ordinary t-shirts just wouldn't do! We purchased different colored shirts, cut them up and combined the pieces for interesting combinations. By doing this we created a far more interesting background for the designs than just a plain shirt. All 12 of the designs come in multiple sizes. |
| Baby Train (27 Designs) $39.95 |
|
What little boy doesn't like baby trains? This is a cute collection of 12 different train cars along with a few other design elements to create a beautiful quilt or banner. Each car has its own unique theme; there are animal cars, people cars, logs, rocks and much more. Each of the train designs come in two sizes 5"x7" and 6"x10". We created a unique wall hanging project and the instructions for the wall hanging as well as the fabrics we used in the design are in the tutorial. Each design was embroidered on a piece of denim that was then turned into a small pillow. We then added three grommets to each side of the pillow. The pillows were stuffed with poly pillow stuffing to add dimension. Decorative ribbon was then used to tie the blocks together. You can make the train wall hanging as long as you want, just add more blocks! |
|
If you love leather, then this is the collection for you. Our samples for this collection consists of some great pillows created with a combination of denim squares and diagonals of suede with leather and suede applique crosses. We used the regular applique and also the raw edge applique techniques. Leather and suede come in all kinds of fun colors and designs. These designs could even look great on a pair of jeans or jacket. So, have fun and see what kind of project you can create with these trendy cross designs. |

The connecting flowers collection is like 2 design packs in one. The first part of the collection consists of connecting flower quilt blocks. There are 16 different flowers in 2 different sizes each that include a unique squaring stitch making it much easier to create the perfect quilt. There are also 3 different running stitch blocks that you can use for checkerboard style quilts or to create the unique wall hanging that is our sample design. These designs are made to be rotated at a 45 degree angle for the finished project. We include all of the necessary pieces to make a square quilt with these designs. The second part of the collection consists of all the original flowers edited and rotated so that they are straight. We created the wall hanging using ten of the flowers and the running stitch designs. Since the designs are all rotated 45 degrees, the finished project forms a natural point. There is no need for you too measure the blocks because the pattern is included in our tutorial.

Spring Quilt (80 Desings) $69.95
When we create the projects for our embroidery designs, we usually add quilting and sewing techniques for a finishing touch. Then, when we display the projects at trunk shows and events, we hear comments that these finishing touches are often what you find the most difficult to do! So, while planning this Spring Quilt collection we decided to include some of these techniques right in the embroidery designs themselves! We made four different types of block designs with five different embroidery design themes. The themes are perfect for spring sewing projects: butterfly, dragonfly, blue bird, daisy and strawberry. Each design is made in all four-block styles. Each block is offered in two sizes and the embroidery designs are also included separately in two sizes. Every block incorporates an embroidery technique and a quilt technique.

Baby Owls (24 Designs) $39.95
This is a cute new collection designed by our artist Rachel. She created 12 cute and cuddly owls that we embroidered using different types of furry minky fabric. The owls became even cuddlier with this decorative fabric. Each of the owls comes in two different sizes for all of your embroidery needs. For our samples we created two simple pillows featuring an owl with a ladybug and the other with a ladybug and a bright green caterpillar. We framed the owl with yellow grosgrain ribbon and then added a few ladybug buttons that we found in a fabric store. Then we dressed up the green pillow with brown fringe with balls and eyelet lace. We finished the round pillow with white tassel trim. There is an additional tutorial included on the CD-Rom called "Baby Tutorial" which demonstrates how to embroider applique designs. It also includes patterns and ideas for quilts, diaper bags, bumper pads and other baby projects.

The Pfaff collection has four large designs for the Pfaff creative Vision, plus 55 regular designs. The pack has a great variety of holiday designs. Starting with snowflake paisley, poinsettias and scrolls and even the all time favorite holiday greenery, bows and ornaments.
For this project we used quilt pattern 2 from the Baby tutorial. The patterns and tutorial are located on the CD Rom in the tutorials folder. This is an easy quilt to create; all of the Panda bears were embroidered on a mint colored flannel. Once they are embroidered we trimmed them into squares and then stitched the individual squares onto the background fabric. This technique eliminates conventional piecing. You can then embellish the squares with ribbon or rick-rack.
This is another collection designed by our artist Rachel. She created 12 cute and comical giraffes. The designs come in two sizes to accommodate any of your projects ideas. These cute giraffe designs are perfect for any child's room. The project we created is a cuddly baby quilt with flannel. The giraffes are applique designs. There is an additional tutorial included on the CD-Rom called "Baby Tutorial" This tutorial demonstrates how to embroider applique designs, it also includes pattern and ideas for quilts, diaper bags, bumper pads and other baby projects. We wanted to give the completed project a bright look so we added the ribbon that resembles a measuring tape.
DIAMOND CLUB ITEM: FEBRUARY 2010
We were talking about new ideas in our studio one day and our new artist Rachel suggested "How about dancing fruit with arms, mouths, but with no eyes" I thought it was a little odd, but then she painted an example and they turned out really cute. Each of the fruit and vegetables has character and you will love them. There are 12 different designs in this collection and each design comes in 2 sizes. These designs would look great in any kitchen! You can purchase pre-made tea towels or create your own. There is a tutorial on the CD-Rom that will demonstrate how to create standard tea towels. You can make a tea towel out of linen or good quality cotton. For this collection we used white cotton. For an added touch we added ribbon and other trims shown in our sample tea towels.
We created a beautiful wall hanging with the baby penguin designs. Instead of standard straight blocks we created a slash pattern as a background using pastel marbled flannels in shades of blue and lavender. We created the background first and then embroidered the penguin designs on it. You can place as many penguins as you like on it. Of course these designs would look beautiful on clothing as well. There is an additional tutorial on the CD-Rom that shows you lots of other ideas for baby quilts, and other projects as well as instructions on creating applique.
The Asian Quilt collection has 42 different designs included in 3 different sizes of each. There are three types of designs included in the collection. There are traditional Asian elements in the collection as well as connecting Sashiko style designs. Sashiko is a beautiful stitching style that is created entirely by hand. It is impossible to recreate the stitching on an embroidery machine, but you can still embroider beautifully inspired Sashiko designs. I created this collection in a different way compared to our other quilt collections. Each design includes a squaring stitch; this is the first step in the design. This designates the size of your block so you no longer need to measure and square off the fabric. Creating one of our projects is even easier now. This technique is all explained in the tutorial. We hope you enjoy our new Quilting line and we look forward to creating even more designs for quilting very soon!
You are going to love the Holiday Tea Towels Collection. We created these designs to stitch fast and easy on your embroidery machine. The designs were all created using running stitches. Instead of digitizing the designs with 2 layers of thread like a redwork design each stitch repeats 7 times to mimic hand sewn embroidery floss. The look is quite different and unique! There are 12 different themes in this collection and each design comes in 3 sizes. You can create a different tea towel for every holiday! These designs make perfect gifts for everyone on your list. You can purchase pre-made tea towels or create your own. The tutorial demonstrates how to create a tea towel from linen or cotton. You can make a tea towel out of linen or high quality cotton. For this collection we used white linen. For an added touch you can add decorative holiday fabric to the bottom of each towel.
This is another collection designed by our artist Rachel, when we suggested baby dinosaurs she immediately understood our direction and created 12 cute and cuddly dinosaurs. The end result once they were embroidered was stunning. We went in a slightly different direction with this collection; each dinosaur comes in three versions, a large and small applique and a stitched design. The project we created is a wall hanging that contains 4 of the dinosaurs. There is an additional tutorial included on the CD-Rom called "Baby Tutorial" This tutorial demonstrates how to embroider applique designs, it also includes pattern and ideas for quilts, diaper bags, bumper pads and other baby projects. We chose a flannel for the background and an assortment of colors of felt for the appliques of the dinosaurs. We wanted to give the completed project a bright look and the brightly colored felt fabric did the job.
This monogram will look absolutely beautiful on anything you embroider this season. The designs look perfect on both clothing & home decor items. There are 26 different frames in two sizes. Once in a while we design a collection and have no idea what to call it. Usually those collections don't readily fall into a category like flowers or animals and Urban Boho is one of those collections. While we were researching fashion trends we noticed that a lot of different stitch types were being used on current garments. Those stitch types are mainly machine stitches made to look like they were done by hand. We used a lot of these techniques on this collection. The results are stunning, vintage and modern mixed together. The designs are roses, crests, flowers and banners with a few twists mixed in. There is everything from large arrangements to applique designs. There are also lots of design ideas and inspiration mixed in. This collection is perfect for any age!
Tween Cutie Diva is the music lover, she has a lot of cute elements to go with any project you can imagine. You can even do a switch plate cover project or a lamp shade like we did. Don't forget to look over the tutorial on the disc for extra information.

"Swallows" is a combination of detailed designs of birds in perched poses with sprays of flowers and vegetation to enhance your projects. The digitizing is superb with shadows and highlights to make these tiny birds come to life. We have done linen and denim shirts with flowers and an intricate birdcage design. In addition, we have a grouping of flowers with a swallow draped down the front of the shirts. Then we embroidered a simple, long sleeve t-shirt and couldn't believe the impact this design made. We also created a gorgeous pillow with these designs because this collection is perfect for clothing and....home decor projects. Just think of all the possibilities!
This is our first collection of Christmas designs that are specifically designed and sized for clothing. The designs are light and fashionable and can be used on any type of garment. Of course, they also can be embroidered on quilts or any other item you may want to decorate your home with. The collection consists of three different themes with over a dozen designs in each theme. The first theme is a different take on paisley, which we call snowflake paisley. We embroidered these designs in shades of blue, white and silver for a beautiful tonal effect. The second theme is poinsettias. We created these poinsettias as applique designs and they are stylized to look great on garments. The third theme is a holly ornament. This collection has colorful holly and a gorgeous applique golden ornament.
This is our second collection of Christmas designs that are specifically designed and sized for clothing. The designs are light and fashionable and can be used on any type of garment. Of course, they also can be embroidered on quilts or any other item you may want to decorate your home with. The collection consists of three different themes with over a dozen designs in each theme. The first theme is cardinals perched on branches of holly berries. The project we created for this theme is a classic denim shirt with two large embroideries on the front of the Cardinal designs. Then we embellished the shirt with crystals to add some glitter! The second theme is a Gingerbread man and house. We created the Gingerbread man, a star, bell and gingerbread house as applique designs and they are stylized to look great on garments. Then we created gold swirls with candy, stars, and Christmas lights for more design choices. We embroidered this group of designs on a denim shirt. The third theme is Santa and his reindeer. This design lines up perfectly across a denim shirt as you can see on our sample. This theme also includes small holly leaves and poinsettias that could be added to the collar or sleeve. As you can see, you will find many uses for the Christmas Fashion 2 collection whether you are decorating your garments or your home!

We even embellished the back pockets of one pair of jeans with pieces of leather. The poshibilities are endless! This collection has three design sets. The designs were created so they could be linked together to form larger arrangements for jeans and shirts but the designs were also created to look great individually. So, if you're feeling a little "POSH" then purchase the "POSHabilities" collection today!

For this project we created place mats and napkins. As you can see from the pictures we used just the apple designs for one of them and the pumpkin designs for the other. The napkins are embroidered with the small stitched version of the designs. When we planned this Harvest Quilt collection we decided to include some of finishing touches of quilting techniques right in the embroidery designs themselves! We made four different types of block designs with five different embroidery design themes. The themes are perfect for fall sewing projects: acorn, pumpkin, apple, oak and maple leaf. Each design is made in all four-block styles. Each block is offered in two sizes and the embroidery designs are also included separately in two sizes. Every block incorporates an embroidery technique and a quilt technique. Here is more information about the blocks:
1.Checkerboard block with stitched embroidery design. This block uses the crazy quilt applique technique to apply five different fabrics. The first four are a checkerboard pattern with a fifth square centered. A beautifully detailed, stitched design is then embroidered in the center of this final square.
2.Stippeled block and applique embroidery design
This block contains a standard applique design that is surrounded by hand digitized stippling for a truly hand crafted effect.
3. Striped block with running stitch design. This block also uses the crazy quilt technique to apply five different fabrics in strips. Running stitch designs in a continuous border style are then stitched on, several of the strips to complete the look.
4. Homespun applique design with echo quilting Homespun applique designs are appliques that are finished with a hand digitized blanket stitch instead of a satin stitch. For an authentic hand made look, use felt for your applique pieces. Echo quilting surrounds the design to complete the block.

Oh the "Fall Season", with the cool, crisp evening air and the colorful fall palette. The "Falling Leaves" Collection is a beautiful mini collection that brings all those senses into play. The collection has 30 designs in three formats: small, medium and running stitch. You can embroider directly on fabric or on organza to create freestanding leaf designs. As you can see from our table runner sample we combined all three formats to create a visually interesting motif. The possibilities are endless such as table runners, place mats and towel sets. Or... you can take your embroidery a step further and add a combination of all thee formats to a linen shirt. How stunning would that be?
The Estate Collection has a combination of three different types of designs. The first is cutwork; what vintage collection would be complete without them? The second is running stitch designs. To me nothing looks more elegant than tone on tone running stitch work. The third type is, light stitched designs. When you use all three of these designs together you will have stunning results.
You'll appreciate Cottage Rose Lace for its simplistic beauty. It's elegant roses with leaves, stem & all. You'll also get Vintage Ball Fringe Lace Trim to use as an accent trim around your project. The project we did for this pack was a gorgeous table runner with the lace in the center & the fringe all around.
The Canterbury Collection contains beautiful cutwork letters, reverse applique letters, light stitched letters, frames and embellishments. The designs look great white on white or in any tonal variation.
Butterfly Quilt contains two different types of designs. The first type is a traditional Redwork design in 3 different sizes, so no matter what type of machine you have or what size block you want to create you will have the perfect design. The second type of design is the Redwork Design framed by beautiful motif stitches. By stitching the design with a layer of batting between two layers of fabric you can create a unique puffy quilt. The motif designs come in three different sizes. We created two different projects, one with each type of design.
You are going to love the latest addition to our vintage line titled Butterfly Cutwork. The difference between this collection and old fashion cutwork is instead of cutting each hole by hand after the design is completed, you cut the holes first and let the design embroider over them. We accomplish this using a unique cutwork technique that is taught in our comprehensive tutorial. There are 46 different files total and the project for this collection was tea towels, which make the perfect addition to any kitchen. This collection and they way we chose the colors in the designs differ from almost anything else we've ever done. We decided to make the designs tonal, meaning all of the colors are in the same shade, which is also the shade of the base fabric. It is actually an easy technique; simply choose 7 or 8 colors that are all a shade apart. For example on the pink tea towel we chose 8 shades of pink thread. The best part of this technique is that you can mix brands of thread without issue. After the colors are chosen simply use them at random, they will all look beautiful together and go perfectly with the background. Remember, choose your fabric first and then choose 7 or 8 shades of thread to go with it. No matter what your color choice is the designs are guaranteed to look great.
Butterfly Lace Basket is by far the most beautiful & intricate lace design collection you will ever see. It looks fantastic in any color, with or without jewels, rayon or metallic thread, we've tried it all & it keeps getting better every time we do it. Also included is a candle holder & a coasters project.
These sweet, fuzzy bunnies are hopping your way in time for spring and Easter projects. Of course, they are perfect for baby quilts, too! We all fell in love with their big bunny eyes and using "Minky" fabric for the applique makes certain they are touchable, loveable designs your family will enjoy all year long!
Your children will be delighted when you create an embroidered barnyard scene for them. Cows, ducks, pigs, sheep, & roosters decorate this whimsical collection.
Our first release in this new line is called Baltimore Quilt and is based on traditional quilt designs. We are giving you two types of designs in this collection. The first type of design is redwork. You get 20 different designs digitized in four different sizes so that no matter what size hoop you have you can enjoy these designs. The second type of design is a fully stitched version of the design in two different sizes. These designs look great on smaller quilts. We have also included five different stipple frames that can be merged with the stitched designs in your embroidery machine for beautiful stippled borders that look like you created them by hand.

This collection is full of soft and beautiful baby designs. There are storks, booties, rattles, a rocking horse, a baby buggy and a host of others. All of the flowers in the collection were hand digitized to simulate hand stitching and most of the running stitches are very long and use seven ply stitches to simulate thicker hand embroidery thread. Create a lap quilt using three of the jumbo designs. We used cotton thread for a vintage look as well and we only used 8 colors in the whole collection. We can assure you that no matter what project you use these vintage designs for everyone will love them!
Using these adorable turtle designs we created a quilt in a blue and green color scheme which is great for a little boy, but change the colors to pink and green and it is perfect for a little girl. First, we embroidered each of the turtle designs on squares of beige colored knit fabric. Then we attached the embroidered squares to the green plaid seersucker fabric background using rickrack and ribbon. This technique gives the baby quilt a unique look!
We embroidered the ponies using minky fabric for the appliques. We found that by using minky fabric the ponies looked even cuter and you will find them irresistible. We embroidered all of the designs on a marble flannel fabric. For the project we created a 4 block wall hanging using the larger 6"x10" pony designs. Each block is 10" x 10" when finished (don't forget to allow for seam allowances). We then added a 1" border between each block using the spotted minky fabric and then framed all four blocks with 2" of the same spotted minky. Once we were finished we bound the wall hanging with the marble flannel. Whether you create this project or design your own, everyone is sure to love the baby ponies.

Whether you create this project or design your own, everyone is sure to love the Baby Peacocks. For the project we created a 6 block wall hanging using the larger 6"x10" peacock designs. Each block is 10" x 14" when finished (don't forget to allow for seam allowances). First we embroidered all of the peacocks on a white cotton fabric with a small tone on tone pattern. Then we added a 1" border between each block using different shades of blue grosgrain ribbon and then framed all four blocks with 2" of the turquoise marble fabric. Once we were finished we bound the wall hanging with the gold marble cotton. There is an additional baby tutorial located on the CD-Rom that showcases different types of quilt patterns as well as instructions on how to create applique and stuffed animals as well.
Butterflies And Babies what a combination! How about some 3-D butterflies for your next project! Due to the response we've been receiving from the "Baby Bugs" collection, we give you the next evolution in baby insect embroidery...."Baby Butterflies". There are 32 designs in all with a bunch of project possibilities.
Autumn Monogram has unique embellishments swirling around & over top of each letter. Embellished letters are available in 2 sizes 4"x4" & 5"x7". Unadorned letters in 2 sizes are also available along with 8 different motifs to go along with the monograms. By arranging & mirroring the motifs you can create beautiful quilt blocks & large monogram designs.
This collection offers beautiful fans, peacocks, cranes & oriental garden scenes along with some opportunities to do several wonderful applique designs. As a free bonus we have included Lace to Go, which is a lace Chinese takeout box. It even unfolds like the real thing & it comes with the designs to make the display base that it sits on. Yes, you can even do it in pint & quart size.
Apples can be served many ways, in a basket, in a bowl, or mixed up into apple butter. Here at Anita Goodesign we serve it all ways. The detail work in the shading is second to none, looks so real you could almost take a bite.
Welcome to our newest Vintage Collection titled "Antique Days of the Week." These designs may look like your typical redwork designs but they are actually quite different. Each stitch repeats 7 times to mimic hand embroidery thread. The look is quite different and unique! There are seven different main designs signifying each day and a different antique. Each main design comes in two different sizes. We broke each design into smaller elements so the individual girls or saying can be added to any project you desire. We created tea towels for this collection. There is a tutorial on the following pages that will demonstrate how to create standard tea towels. You can make a tea towel out of linen or high quality cotton. For this collection we used natural cotton. For an added vintage touch you can add vintage pieces of fabric or trims to the tea towels.
Imagine what you can do with all of these beautiful freestanding lace designs. The possibilities are endless. This pack has thirty-three designs for every hoop size. You will find seven different projects in the collection and you will love them all. A 15-page lace tutorial as well as a re-sizing program is also included.
This Turkey Crazy Quilt design was created using vintage Civil War replica fabrics. The small motif designs in the fabrics and the color combinations that we used for this sample are stunning. This quilt design can become a perfect addition to all your Thanksgiving family gatherings. Creating Crazy Quilts on an embroidery machine is such an easy technique! The crazy quilt technique has been popular with quilters for years but if aren't a quilter you have probably never tried this amazing technique. If you are a quilter that embroiders as well... you can combine both hobbies into this project. There are a multitude of fabrics to choose from as you can see from the fabrics we chose for this quilt. Mixing different fabrics in a patchwork style makes crazy quilts. There are a few different crazy quilt designs for embroidery machines but the techniques that were used required a lot of steps that involved folding fabric and it took a long time to complete a block. We used a much simpler technique with these designs. The best part about crazy quilts are when they are complete you have a scene with a large icon in the center instead of just a quilt. Our tutorial contains an extensive guide that will demonstrate how to choose your fabrics, create a block and finish the quilt. In the finished wall hanging notice how the bands of fabric continue through the whole design even though they are done in different hoopings.
Sleigh Ride is the follow-up collection to Floral Tile Scene. Both collections were created in the same fashion, using twelve separate embroidery designs to create one large scene. "Floral Tile" was such a huge hit that it was only natural for us to come out with another "scene" collection. Now we offer the scene in a third size for those of you with 6"x10" hoops. Sleigh Ride is not a "Christmas" collection per say, there are no Santas or elves, it's just a beautiful winter scene for all to enjoy.
DIAMOND CLUB ITEM: FEBRUARY 2010
Whew! This is one of the hardest scenes I've ever created. The Country Church scene took months of planning. Our artist Ginny painted this scene and the end result was stunning. When I received the painting I was overwhelmed with the amount of work that it would entail. I tacked the painting on my art wall and there it sat for a few months. Everyday I would look at it and say to myself, not today! Inspiration finally struck and I set to work on it. I decided to create a 9-block tile scene. Choosing the colors was the most difficult step; I chose a lot bright colors to make the design really pop. The end result was only 29 colors, can you believe it, and the finished project looks like so much more. I decided to create the design mainly using hand-digitizing techniques. Each block took more than a day to hand-digitize. When all of the designs were finished there were more then 8,000 segments in the design. Every time I digitize a section that is called a segment. The average embroidery design has around 100 segments. My tile scenes usually have between 2,000 and 4,000. So as you can see a lot of work went into this design. I am more than pleased with the end result; I am never sure what a tile scene will look like until it is sewn together. The Country Church looks like an actual painting. You will love it! There is a detailed tutorial included. There are four different sizes of the design included. We created our project using the middle size. I hope you love creating the Country Church Tile scene as much as I did creating it!
DIAMOND CLUB BONUS: OCTOBER 2009
This Christmas tree crazy quilt design even comes decked out with Christmas lights! Creating Crazy Quilts on an embroidery machine is such an easy technique! The crazy quilt technique has been popular with quilters for years but if aren't a quilter you have probably never tried this amazing technique. If you are a quilter that embroiders as well.... you can combine both hobbies into this project. There are a multitude of fabrics to choose from so this was a fun way for us to launch this technique. You create a crazy quilt by mixing different fabrics in a patchwork style.
This Owl Crazy Quilt design is a fun design especially for all those folks that love and collect anything with owls! Creating Crazy Quilts on an embroidery machine is such an easy technique! The crazy quilt technique has been popular with quilters for years but if aren't a quilter you have probably never tried this amazing technique. If you are a quilter that embroiders as well...you can combine both hobbies into this project. As you can see on this project we were able to pick some really nice fabrics. You can let your own creative style emerge and use some of those smaller pieces of fabric that you have been saving. You create a crazy quilt by mixing different fabrics in a patchwork style.

There are 12 lovable reindeer in this collection. The designs come in two sizes each, one size for the 5"x7" hoop and one for the 6"x 10". These designs look great on clothing or decor projects such as quilts. We used brown craft felt for the reindeer applique on our project, but you can easily replace the felt with cotton or fake fur. Our projects for this collection are a simple quilt and two small sweatshirts. The quilt is created without piecing. We simply chose a large piece of fabric for our background, trimmed our embroidered blocks to the desired size and then trimmed the blocks with ribbon. This technique makes creating a quilt much easier. We used Christmas ribbons for our trim on the quilt and embellished the sweatshirts with glittery pom-poms and small jingle bells to give them a fun and festive look. |
| (Snow People 42 Designs) $69.95 |
|
When we were designing the Snow People collection we wanted to create a collection that was versatile. We designed 21 different snow people, adults, children and pets and designed them so that they would all connect by holding hands. Each of the Snow People comes in 3 sizes 6.8" x 8", 5.8" x 7" and 4.8" x 6" These designs look great on clothing either by themselves or chained together. We created a cardigan where the designs completely wrap around the bottom. We then created quilt blocks using the Snow People. Each of them come with their own quilt block that includes echo stitching for a true quilted effect. The included tutorial demonstrates how to create the blocks using Warm and Natural Stabilizer in your hoop. This collection is filled with exciting possibilities! |
| 12 Days of Christmas (15 Designs) $39.95 |
|
For the first time from Anita Goodesign, we present The Twelve Days of Christmas, a storybook. When the 14 jumbo designs are put together they create a beautiful soft book, a keepsake that can be enjoyed for years. There is also an extra design so that you may personalize your gift if you wish. The designs in this collection can also be made into a quilt. |
Christmas Ribbons
| Christmas Curls (21 Designs) $39.95 |
|
This is a cute collection of Christmas designs that will look great on anything from a garment to a home decor project. This collection was designed specifically to be fast and easy to embroider. Each design is only one color and does not have any appliqués or additional techniques in them. They are perfect for all of those last minute Christmas Gifts that you have been putting off! For our project we embroidered the designs on towels, which always makes the perfect gift! |
|
Advent Calendar (25 Day blocks, 11 Christmas Blocks, 3 Day Markers) $69.95 (Diamond Club Sept. 2010) |
|
This is a really fun project for Christmas. This is an Advent Calendar with useable pockets. The pockets can be filled with candy or gifts or you can use the included day markers to count down the days until Christmas! We've included a step-by-step tutorial that covers every aspect of this project. All of the blocks and day markers were created for the 5"x7" hoop. However, you will need a hoop capable of embroidering 6"x10" for the option header. There are 2 large scene designs and one crazy quilt block to create the optional header. |
When we started our company in 2004 Christmas Elegance was among the first few collections we ever designed. Four years have gone past and we are now releasing its sequel Christmas Elegance 2. You are going to love this collection! We designed this collection so that all of the designs fully coordinate. There are beautiful Christmas swirls, an elegant Santa and stunning ornaments and trees. There are also 4 different wreaths that would look great on cocktail napkins or tea towels. These designs look great on both home decor items as well as clothing.
These ornaments are sure to be an instant hit when hanging from your tree or gift this year! These freestanding ornaments resemble stained glass because they are created with organza and clear plastic. Light will show through them just like stained glass. Best of all they are embroidered completely in the hoop!
Four years ago we created our first Mini Collection titled "Snowflakes" and this collection has been a customer favorite ever since! When we were designing our winter collections this year we decided to revisit the snowflakes theme again for this new collection titled "Snowflakes 2". This collection contains beautiful multi-colored snowflake scenes as well as individual snowflakes designs. You will love to create projects with these designs all winter long! Our project for this collection is a denim shirt using three of the snowflake designs. If you have never created a garment before we are also including our Fashion Workbook on the CD-Rom. The Fashion Workbook is in the tutorials folder and it will give you dozens of ideas on how to make your garments pop!
Welcome to the third Jolly Holiday collection! Most of our collections focus on one theme with dozens of designs that can be interchanged to create lots of different projects. Sometimes we have an idea for a theme or motif but are unable to base a whole collection on that idea. That's where the Jolly Holiday collections come in. These collections have multiple themes with a large main design and other designs that accompany them perfectly. They work extremely well on towel sets, which as you know make the perfect holiday gift. Jolly Holiday 3 has 5 themes with 30 designs total. The themes are Polar Bears, Elegant Reindeer, Christmas Puppy, Candles and of course, a new Snowman.
Explore the woods in this whimsical winter collection. Cute bears, ducks, raccoons & even a moose are in the set, 32 designs in all. The young wild life lover in your family will really enjoy anything you make them using these designs.

Christmas Accessories (6 Projects) $39.95 (Diamond Club Sept. 2010) |
|
You are going to love our new "In the Hoop" collection, Christmas Accessories. There are six projects in this collection. The collection consists of a large purse, small purse, I-Pod case, phone case, eyeglass case and even a case for your digital camera. Theses projects can be created using no-wale corduroy or cotton velour fabric. The embroidered holiday motif stitch across each project is a part of the design that is created in your hoop. And the best part… it is all done in the hoop, even the zipper! |
We created this beautiful polar fleece quilt with our baby applique designs. There are twenty different Christmas designs offered in two different sizes. There is a large version for the jumbo hoop and a smaller version for the 5"x7" hoop. We used a technique called quilted applique when we created these designs and it is a fun and easy technique. The polar fleece quilt is also very fast and easy to do. The blocks for this quilt are 12 inches square since we created the project with the larger designs. You will need to adjust the block size if you decide to embroider the smaller versions. Instructions for the quilt and a lesson on how to create quilted applique is located on the CD-Rom in the Baby Tutorial.

I made these (see next photo) and they came out absolutely adorable. I clustered 3 together using 1 large and 2 small.
Use beads in the middle of the stitching lines to brighten up your project. I used green felt and used varrigated thread and metalic thread to do the stitching on the leaves..

These are the ones I made....they were part of a gift for a strawberry swap on one of my yahoo groups.
This is just the most darling little ladybug. I made her (see the next two photos) and she came out just perfect...!
FIND THIS PROJECT HERE:
http://www.embroiderygarden.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=709This is my version of the little ladybug sewing kit. I used ladybug ribbon for the antena and black tiny polkadots on red for the back. I stuffed the body of my kit to resemble a pincushion. I also used batting for the project where it called for felt. I did use red felt for the underside of the wings since it was going to have pins, needles and things put into it. I attached the flower with a glue gun. On the pocket I cut the fabric on the fold and placed a 1/2 inch strip of the matching wing fabric in and stitched a 1/4 inch seam, folded it over and used this section for the top of the pocket.
I used 3 different fabrics. One for the outside of the wings under the dots, one for the inside and pocket and one for the outside.
I only used felt for the underside of the wings and used warm and natural for the rest of the project..(why waste felt).
I used ladybug ribbon instead of black for the antena and matched it up to the black and white stork scissors.
I also as I said in the photo previous made a matching fabric insert for the pocket just to seperate the pocket from the black background fabric.
This is just the most adorable addition to ones bathroom or kitchen for the Easter holidays. I made a bunch of these (see next photo) I did mine with fabric ears that matched the legs, doubled them and turned them inside out. It gave my project a much more finished look.

I always make a few little changes as I go with most patterns, here I changed the ears to be a little more pointed rather than rounded since rabbits dont have rounded ears. I also doubled the ears and turned them inside out, looked more finished when done. I didnt do that with this one which was the first one I made. I also made the ears of matching fabric instead of white.
If you love owl's you will just love this little sewing kit..

The answer is this in-the-hoop "tree"-mendous Christmas tree!
This design set requires a 6x10 hoop (or larger) and consists of 11 design files. The tree features both front and lining fabrics and a firm fleece batting for body, and each of the parts of the tree, star, and trunk is adorned with different motifs, all giving a trapunto effect. The pieces are joined together in the hoop and given a rich satin edge for a truly elegant final project. At that point, your creativity can take over with additional adornments if you wish.

Little Banty Chick Pincushion Kit
Little Banty makes a great sewing companion; she's there when you need her and she keeps her opinions to herself. Never prone to flightiness, her feet are flopped firmly and flat on the ground. Although holding sewing pins is enough justification for this character's existence, she also makes a great name tag holder and place setting favor for any hen gathering. Sand filling keeps pins clean & sharp and gives weight & stability. Kit includes: Pattern, all beads, beak fabric. You need to supply: fabric and filling. Finished size: 3"X3"X3".
PRICE: $9.50
These are so easy to make. I lined this one with a laminated cotton. You can also use a nylon like windbreakers are made of, any fabric that has a silky or plastic like surface will do. There is no reason you could not use one of those table cloths with the backing on it but it has to be light weight and thin enough to manipulate turning it inside out and putting it together.
directions:
make a 10 1/2 inch square of both your fabric and the lining.
Sew right sides together leaving an opening to turn it inside out. Stitch little opening. Fold block in half insides out and make a dart that is 3 inches long and 3/4 inches in width on the fold. Repeat on all 4 corners. Turn right side out, and fold over flaps, then place a button to hold each flap down.
Done..................!
*you can find laminated cotton at a number of locations on the internet, its the new thing so its kind of high in cost :

ELEPHANTS ON PARADE BY ROBERTAS CREATIONS
ELEPHANTS ON PARADE BY ROBERTAS CREATIONS
A gift for my Godchild...We purchased this bassenett at a garage sale. I brought it home and cleaned it with clorox, let it dry, repainted it with white nursery paint and then recovered the entire basket insie and out with a beautiful cover. It has a white skirt underlay with a 3 tier ruffel around the outside with a tiny lace trim. The hood is padded and covered with a lace trim. The Mother later sold it at a garage sale for drug money.....nice ha!!
I made this pillow for my friend Alma..Her little angel has since passed away so I am so very glad she has this to remember him by!
I tried to match it up the best I could!
This was the gift I made for Louise for Mothers Day 2009.
The machine embroidery designs are from Nitasplace.com.
I made this pillow for the store. I love this type of paper piece project, the effect is so neat!
I did this pillow on the mega hoop on the designer diamond.
This was done on the designer diamond in the mega hoop, it is done all in the hoop with no adjustments.
Designs by Anita Goodesigns.
This was the first project I did on the designer diamond. The designs are from Anita Goodesigns (leaves).
The design for this pillow is called "Reef" it is from Anita Goodesigns. The fabric is Japanese Silk. (My friend lives in Japan and she sends me pieces of fabric all the time..this is such a lovely feeling fabric).
I made this as a wedding gift for my dear friend Jeff. His Mother passed away the year before he got married. A chair was placed where his Mother would have been sitting in the front row at the wedding. I made this to fit the chair they were using. On the front was as you can see a poem and 2 buttonholes both top and bottom on both sides so that Jeff, his Father and his two sisters could each place a rose for his Mother in rememberance.
The next picture is of the back. She loved doves and roses. Doves were released in her honor during the ceremony.
Jeff wanted me to write something for his Mother.
I though this was perfect for her. She was the most lovely lady, full of compassion and everyone loved her. She was a pillar of the community, a teacher and a distinguished member of the Catholic Church where she and her husband attended every Sunday.
THIS IS IN REMEMBRANCE OF HER....
side view..at the wedding this was put over a chair in memorial for Jeff's Mother.
easter 2010
I made 12 of these the night before Thanks giving because we didnt have any placemats to match the napkin set I did for the table that year...
I designed this stroller pad and strap covers for my Godchilds stroller which after awhile needed more than one pad. This way its always fresh and clean.
OK, this is one of those projects that looks alot easier than it actually is..Looks so pretty hanging there in all of its "3-D" glory but it was very hard to put together and have it look right.
This is from Embroidery Library.
To get its 3-D form I stitched out as instructed but DID NOT REMOVE THE WATER SOLUABLE AND I SPRAYED (saturated) IT WITH HEAVY DUTY SPRAY STARCH FOR 5 CONSECUTIVE DAYS LETTING IT DRY FLAT (with a weight on it) IN BETWEEN EACH SPRAYING. This gave it the stiff form you need to make it look like an actual "3-D" ornament. Then sew all the pieces together at the top and bottom joints. It is beautiful but alot of time and effort went into it..............
Rayon thread--This thread is the most popular choice overall because of its attractive high sheen, widespread availability, and consistent trouble-free performance, holding up to high-speed stitching without breaking or fraying. Rayon thread comes in a wide range of solid and variegated colors, as well as in a new "twist" thread composed of two or more solid colors twisted together to form a single strand, which adds automatic shading and dimension to flat designs. Most rayon threads are available in a standard 40 wt. and a thicker 30 wt. (in terms of thread sizing, the higher the number, the finer the thread).
Rayon thread is readily available in standard size 40 wt. and a thicker size 30 wt., as well as in a wide range of colors. Brands include Coats & Clark, C & C ColorTwist; The Finishing Touch; Gütermann; Isafil; Madeira; Megasheen; Mettler Silky Sheen; Mez Alcazar; Robison-Anton; Scansilk; Signature; Sulky; and Sulky Ultra Twist.
Polyester embroidery thread—Popular and economical for embroidery, polyester thread provides an effect similar to rayon and comes in various colors. It won't shrink, fade, or bleed, so it's great for children's clothes. Rayon thread has a slightly higher sheen than polyester thread, but the two are interchangeable and perform similarly without breaking or fraying. When they're combined in a single design, it's hard to tell the difference.
Polyester thread is economical and colorfast, even holding up to chlorine bleach. Brands include Coats America Sylko, Isacord, Janome (acrylic), Madeira Neon, Mettler Poly Sheen, Robison-Anton Polyester, Sulky Poly-Deco, and YLI Ultrasheen (acrylic).
Cotton embroidery thread—Cotton thread is often overlooked for use in automatic embroidery machines. However, it performs beautifully and has a lovely, soft sheen. It's available in weights up to a very fine 100, which is considered heirloom quality. But finer threads tend to be weaker, so 30- or 50-wt. cotton thread is more appropriate for machine embroidery because it's stronger and provides better coverage.
When buying cotton thread, choose sizes 30 wt. or 50 wt. for strength and sufficient coverage. Brands include Aurifil, Madeira Cotona, Madeira Tanne, and Mettler 100% Embroidery Cotton
Special-effect embroidery thread—There are numerous special-effect threads, from a fuzzy acrylic/wool-based variety, which creates an old-fashioned crewel-like effect, to fluorescent neon threads. Some threads change colors when exposed to sunlight, and others glow in the dark. If you have performance problems with any of these threads, follow the special handling techniques discussed next.
Brands to consider include Madeira Fluorescent Neon, Madeira Hologram, Superior Threads NiteLite, Superior Threads Sunspot, YLI Glo-Bug, YLI Monet (acrylic-wool), YLI Reflections, and UV Threads.
Special handling tips
Some embroidery threads have a reputation for being difficult to work with. Breakage during stitching is a common problem, and it's tempting to blame the thread. But, more likely, a few slight adjustments to your sewing machine can make a big difference. Of course, sewing machines vary, but these handling tips should help you deal with most stitching problems.
First, let's talk about tension. Whenever you try a new thread, check your machine's upper tension by sewing a 3-in.-long row of zigzag stitches on a scrap of the same fabric you plan to embroider, stabilizing and hooping it properly. The correct tension for machine embroidery should be slightly unbalanced, with a tighter bobbin tension, so the needle thread only shows on the surface, pulling slightly to the underside. If the needle thread totally covers the bobbin thread on the wrong side, the needle tension is too loose.
Improperly balanced tensions can also cause "bird-nesting," that pile of looped threads that forms under the fabric. If this happens, check to be sure the thread hasn't slipped out of the take-up lever guide, check for lint between the tension discs, and clean these discs periodically. Sewing at high speeds can sometimes cause loose threads to get caught between the tension discs. Maintain clean upper tension by cutting your thread at the spool, instead of at the needle, when you change colors or complete a stitching sequence, then pull the thread down to remove it. Pulling the thread up can cause frayed ends to catch between the tension discs, possibly producing damage. Since thread continuously passes through the bobbin tension at high speeds, lint can accumulate and cause thread breakage there also, so clean inside and around the bobbin case often.
Next, look at your machine's thread-feeding system. In my experience, there's no other single variable as critical to successful thread handling as the path the thread takes from spool to needle. If the thread is straight and unobstructed in this path, it's less likely to misbehave. If you're having problems, first check the spool pin: Some threads stitch better from a horizontal pin and others from a vertical pin. A horizontal pin may cause thread to spiral as it leaves the end of the spool, causing the thread to twist and possibly snap. With a vertical pin, the thread may slide down the edge of the spool, collect there, and become lodged underneath the end cap. The thread may even backspin, causing loops and uneven tautness. If you can't adjust the position of your spool pin, try a device like the ThreadPro or Martha Pullen's Thread Stand, which guide the thread so it unwinds straight and flat to the needle. I find the ThreadPro useful when embroidering with metallic threads, but it's also helpful with any sewing and any thread when there's only a small amount left on a spool. This thread is more tightly wound and may kink as it unwinds.
Consider the direction in which the thread winds off the spool as well. For better stitching, cross-wound spools should feed off the top, and straight-wound spools should feed off the side. Also, some threads behave better when they unwind from the back of the spool, others from the front. If you're having difficulty, try removing the thread and turning it around.
What about bobbin thread?
Bobbin threads especially designed for machine embroidery are strong enough to withstand the stress of high-speed stitching, yet fine enough to keep densely embroidered designs supple. There are several types of bobbin threads, so I suggest keeping a variety of weights on hand because there is no single all-purpose bobbin thread that works equally well with all specialty embroidery threads. Generally speaking, it's best to pair a needle thread with a bobbin thread of similar weight and fiber content.
The fineness of these bobbin threads means more thread can be wound on the bobbin. Brands on the market include Madeira Bobbinfil, Mettler Metrolene, Sulky Bobbin Thread, and YLI Lingerie/Bobbin Thread.
Use the right needle
Fortunately, needle manufacturers have designed needles specifically for embroidery thread, some with specialized eyes that eliminate stripping or splitting the thread as it passes through them. Machine-embroidery needles by Schmetz or Madeira have slightly rounded points to avoid damage to rayon threads. Topstitching needles can also be used with most embroidery threads. And Sullivan's Metafil, Madeira's Metallic, and the Schmetz Metallica needles, for example, designed for metallic embroidery thread, have an elongated eye and a special shaft to reduce friction.
Choose the needle size according to the weight of your fabric. An improperly sized needle or an old or nicked needle can cause thread to fray and break. Remember to replace needles often (I change mine after every five hours of sewing time).
You may come across recommendations to use a silicone- or Teflon-based thread lubricant, which coats the thread to make it smooth and flexible, reducing friction and fraying and helping the thread glide easily through the needle. These products can work well, but before using any of them, be sure to check your machine manual. Some manufacturers clearly state that lubricants should not be used with their machines.
Armed with these tips, you can be confident when using these wonderful specialty threads. And they're sure to add excitement to your machine embroidery.................
and/or................................
With all the threads available for machine embroidery, how do you know which one to
choose? Consider the thread's size and fiber content as well as color, and for variety and
fun, investigate specialty threads from metallic to glow-in-the-dark......................
Most machine embroidery and sewing threads are from size 100 to 12, with a larger number indicating a smaller thread size. Sewing threads used for garment construction are usually size 50, while embroidery designs are almost always digitized for size 40 thread. This means that the stitches in most embroidery designs are spaced so size 40 thread fills the design adequately without gaps or overlapping threads. When test-stitching reveals a design with stitches so tightly packed it feels stiff, stitching with a finer size 50 or 60 thread is one way to soften the design. On the other hand, larger thread (size 30) can be used to increase coverage in a motif. For example, a white snowman stitched on black fabric may appear gray because the fabric is visible between threads; switching to a larger thread results in a more complete fill and whiter appearance. Threads larger than size 30 are not suitable for most embroidery designs, unless the design size is increased to accommodate the larger size, or the digitizer specifically recommends it.
Fiber Content
Machine embroidery threads are widely available in rayon, polyester and cottonfibers. In deciding which to use, consider cost and availability as well as the end use and care requirements of the project.
Rayon
Rayon was developed as an alternative to natural silk. Rayon threads have the soft sheen of silk and are available in an incredible range of colors, usually in size 40 or 30. Because rayon is made from cellulose, it accepts dyes readily for color brilliance; unfortunately, it is also subject to fading with exposure to light or frequent laundering. Choose rayon for projects where elegant appearance is the aim and gentle care is appropriate. Rayon thread is also a good choice for machine embroidered quilting motifs.
Polyester:
Polyester fibers are strong and durable. Their color range is similar to rayon threads, and they are easily substituted for rayon. Colorfastness and durability make polyester an excellent choice for children's garments or other items that will be worn hard and/or washed often.
Cotton:
Cotton machine embroidery thread is ideal for reproducing the appearance of hand embroidery stitched with stranded floss. Cotton machine embroidery threads are usually size 50, but the thread's slightly fuzzy finish compensates for its smaller size. Choose cotton threads for household linens, heirloom and cross stitch motifs, or any design where a matte finish is desirable.
Combining and Substituting
Embroidery designs are usually accompanied by lists of the hues the digitizer envisioned for the designs. These are guidelines, not requirements, and it is perfectly acceptable to use different colors to suit your taste or the needs of a particular project.
Many color change lists are keyed to a specific thread brand, with color numbers or brand-specific color names for each step in the design. If you want to duplicate the original design appearance and have the same thread brand, choose the exact threads specified by the digitizer. Using the specified colors can provide an education in shading and combining colors. As your embroidery thread collection grows, you may combine thread brands or types within a single design to achieve subtle shading or an ideal color match. Because polyester and rayon threads have similar characteristics, they can be used interchangeably. Thread charts from various manufacturers that provide small swatches of each color are useful when selecting alternate threads. Charts with printed color samples are not as reliable as those with actual thread samples. Printed charts are usually free while charts with swatches must be purchased, but the difference is worth the cost.In browsing embroidery Web sites, you'll find conversion charts that list equivalent colors in several thread brands. These can provide a starting point for color substitutions, but be aware that the charts vary widely in quality. Do not hesitate to make your own choices if a listed match seems inappropriate. Computer software can be purchased to keep track of your threads, and to provide color-matching options across brand name boundaries. Software also can be programmed to select threads already available in your stash, or used to produce a shopping.
Specialty Threads
Variegated:
In addition to solid-color embroidery threads, there are variegated and multi-color versions in rayon, polyester and cotton. These threads change to a different color value or completely different hue every few inches. Stitching with variegated threads usually creates a striped fill or blocks of different colors along a row of satin stitches. Other multi-hued threads are twisted from two different color strands; for example, light brown with dark brown or black twisted with white. These threads stitch into a heathery, blended fill. They are wonderful for adding dimension and texture to large areas stitched with a single thread. One variety, twisted from a solid-color strand and a variegated strand, produces satin stitches with a blended appearance rather than the stripes of color produced by a variegated strand alone.
Metallic:
Metallic thread is a category that encompasses iridescent and flat threads as well as yarns and core filaments wrapped with metallic fiber. Different brands and constructions create a variety of finished appearances that flow through the machine's tensioning and thread delivery apparatus differently. For best results, experiment with different metallic threads and always stitch a sample with the thread, fabric, stabilizer and needle you will use in the project. Embroidery, topstitching and metallic needles can be used, with the latter often yielding the best stitching. Try lowering the tension setting and reducing the machine speed so the metallic thread stretches less as it follows the thread path to the fabric. Using a vertical spool pin reduces the twist added to the thread for better results on some machines.Miscellaneous fibers:
Special yarns for machine embroidery, combining wool and acrylic or other fibers, are used to stitch soft, fuzzy motifs. Because the yarn is thicker than size 40 embroidery thread, it requires specially digitized motifs or designs that have been altered to allow room for the yarn. Try using the yarn for some design areas and regular embroidery threads for accents or details. After embroidering, the yarn can be combed with a wire brush or toothbrush to create a furry finish for teddy bears and similar motifs. Other specialty threads for embroidery include glow-in-the-dark and solar-reactive threads. Glow-in-the-dark threads absorb light energy and glow when the lights are off, while solar-reactive threads change color in direct sunlight. Both thread types may appear white or very pale in ordinary lighting; for a design with appeal under any lighting conditions, use color-changing threads only in selected design areas. Some changeable threads are thicker than size 40 embroidery thread, so be sure to stitch a sample. Follow manufacturer's care instructions to prolong the special characteristics of novelty threads...............................
and/or...........................
You’ve just spent a fortune on your very first embroidery machine and now the sales person is showing you threads. You can see from the vast array of colors, fibers, weights, and types that you could easily spend another small fortune just on thread. What should you get? How much do you need? Why type is best? Do you really need more thread anyway? In this article we’ll look at the basics to get started.
Most embroidery designs are digitized for 40-weight rayon or polyester embroidery thread. These threads are shiny, not highly twisted, and are the right weight and strength required for decorative stitching. If you don’t already have a stash of high quality embroidery thread, then yes, you definitely need to get some before you start embroidering.
With today’s high-sheen trilobal polyester threads, it can be difficult to tell the difference between rayon and poly. Polyester has improved immensely in sewing quality since the mid 90s and has gained in popularity and today is the fiber of choice for embroiderers. Poly wears better, stands up to strong/frequent laundering, is bleach resistant, and resists a breaking during sewing better than rayon. In my experience, polyester tends to pucker more after embroidery, especially if machine tensions are overly tight.
You may be tempted to start with just whatever thread you already have on hand. Thread manufactured for regular sewing is highly twisted and is stronger and heavier than typical decorative threads designed for decorative stitching and for these reasons it is unsuitable for embroidery. If you have old and/or cheap embroidery thread, you will experience frequent thread breaks and shredding which not only significantly reduces the quality of your embroidery but will also significantly decrease your pleasure.
There are a lot of good embroidery brands on the market today. You may find it more economical to purchase a packaged kit of colors in a popular brand and then augment that with colors needed for various designs. Before buying a huge thread collection, you might want to do a little research and find out how popular it is. By that I mean is it used by a lot of different embroidery designers.
Many embroidery collections specify a particular thread brand along with a thread color number to allow you to duplicate the design. While there are no thread color police to make sure you use the same brand and color, keep in mind that the appearance of a design is highly dependent on the colors used. If you don’t have a good color sense, start with the same thread colors listed for the design. Also keep in mind that while there are conversion charts to allow you to find a close match in a different brand, it is highly unlikely that you will find an exact match.
Frequently used brands include Sulky, Madeira, and Robison-Anton but that doesn’t mean you can’t use another. I’m currently using Hemingworth because in addition to being a high quality trilobal polyester embroidery thread, it has a unique thread delivery system that also protects the thread. Do make sure whatever brand you select that it is a high quality brand.
In general, use metallic threads only when specified in a design, especially when you are first starting out. For one thing, metallic threads when used excessively can look gaudy but more importantly, experienced embroidery design digitizers treat metallics a little differently to improve sewability. What you need to know is considered a specialty embroidery thread.
Unfortunately thread has no “born-on date” nor is there a way to see how it’s been cared for. Thread that is dusty, faded, or has been stored in a hot, dry warehouse will be more susceptible to breaking a shredding so be careful when buying “close-out” thread. Bargain prices may be no bargain when it comes to embroidery quality.
------------------------------------------------------------------
and/or............
The purpose of this article is not to cover the entire science of how thread is manufactured along with the details of every potential embroidery thread available. Instead, we’ll give you a brief overview of how to select and use common embroidery threads.
Here are the two most basic criteria when selecting threads for your design:
Attempting to reduce your embroidery costs by purchasing cheap thread is not an economical decision; price is not the only cost involved with thread. Cheap thread breaks and shreds more easily. Thread that is abraded simply going through the sewing process will result in embroidery that looks “sand papered.” Your sewing time will increase, your frustration level will increase, and your sewing quality will decrease. Is that worth saving a little money? Embroidery lasts the life time of the garment, use quality ingredients! A good, quality embroidery thread not only makes an embroiderer’s work possible, but it also makes it more appealing to the eye, and to be perfectly honest, worth more money.
So what constitutes a good thread? First of all, select one that has been specifically made for embroidery not only for the needle but the bobbin as well. Do not be tempted to substitute serger thread for embroidery bobbin thread. My preference is for spun polyester pre-wound bobbins. If I’m using a machine that requires a machine-specific bobbin, I simply wind one of those bobbins from the prewound.
A good-quality thread is smooth and feeds evenly. A poor-quality thread has thick and thin areas that restrict the smooth flow, causing excessive lint and strip-back. Hold a light thread against a dark fabric and a dark thread against a light fabric to check the quality. Look for color fastness, which is the ability to retain color during normal use, including under proper laundering conditions. Color fastness does not mean bleach fast or even bleach resistant. Check also for the ability to retain color when exposed to sunlight for long periods of time.
Up to the early 1990s, rayon was the overwhelming thread of choice for embroidery. It had the strength, luster, and softness to run smoothly in the machine and produce a beautiful, consistent stitch. Polyester has now become the favorite due to its strength and resistance to chlorine bleach, abrasion, and other environmental and chemical actions. It is also more economical than rayon. However, polyester’s strength can be its weakness if you aren’t careful at managing machine tensions and proper hooping techniques. Under higher tensions, polyester can stretch whereas rayon will snap—and this means you may not be aware of a tension issue. After sewing, the thread will relax back to its normal state and cause the fabric to pucker.
When selecting threads for your design, first look the design’s color reference chart to determine what colors were used and if any specialty threads were used. Reputable digitizers will test their designs using any required specialty threads because adjustments must be made during the digitizing process. If you opt for a different type of thread, you may get undesirable results. For example, if you substitute in a metallic thread for embroidery thread, the design’s stitch length may be too short and/or the density of the area may be too high to permit smooth sewing. Translation: lots of thread breaks!
When measuring thread, the higher the number, the thinner or finer the thread. Thus, 60 wt is finer than 40 wt, which is finer than 30 wt. In general, most designs are digitized for 40wt rayon or polyester thread. Yes, technically speaking, there are ever so slight differences in how thick these threads actually are but for our purposes it is not worth considering. Note that the 2-color twist threads are typically 35 wt and will result in a thicker feel but in most cases can be substituted for a 40 wt.
What if I use a different brand from the design’s color reference chart?
I often find myself in this situation. For monochromatic (single color) designs, this is not an issue at all. And many times you are selecting colors based on the fabric choice or personal preference. I’m also confident in my ability to pick colors that blend well even in most multi-color designs.
Consider the situation where you are embroidering a design with many colors featuring tight blends. In this instance, substituting brands might pose a problem if your brand doesn’t offer a comparable color range. I ran into this issue with a series of dogs I digitized in a brand of thread that wasn’t widely available to home embroiderers. I simply could not find the range of browns, beiges, and caramels I needed in the brand popular at that time. So if you need a color in a different brand, get it! If you have comparable colors in your collection that you are happy with, then by all means, use those instead. There are no thread color police (that company is out of business) who will harass you if you don’t use the same color as the original designer.
Thread can age rapidly if exposed to sun, light, heat, moisture, dust, dirt, and dryness. Old thread breaks and shreds more easily. Thread fibers can become bruised through dropping or bumping and oils from your hands can break down some fibers. I especially like the new threads from Hemingworth. Their plastic caps protect thread from bumps and dirt. eliminate tangling, and keep thread running smoothly on the machine. Plus, they feature a beautiful color range.
No discussion of thread is complete without also talking about needles. The needle has the ultra important task of carrying the thread through the fabric, picking up a loop from the bobbin to form the stitch, and then pulling the thread back out. The correct needle is the smallest one that can do this repeatedly without damage to either the fabric or the thread and without causing excessive needle deflection. For 40wt thread I prefer a size 75/11 needle unless the fabric is “tough” and then I’ll move up a size to the slightly heavier 80/12. Synthetic fabrics will wear down a needle faster than natural fibers so be sure to change the needle as necessary. As with cheap thread, cheap needles or using a needle too long is false economy.

How to Get Better Results with Metallic Thread
Ahh, metallics! So pretty to look at and so pretty frustrating to sew with...
Have you tried sewing or embroidering with metallic threads only to have them snap and shred? If so, you may find yourself avoiding using these beautiful eye-catching fibers as embellishments in your projects. By implementing these 9 proven tips, you can improve your results quickly and easily!
and/or ............................................
Let’s start with the brand of thread you use. There are a variety of different brands out there, which are manufactured in a variety of different places and which are sold at many different price levels. When choosing a brand of thread, you should investigate a few different things. The first thing you should do is get a sample of the thread and run it in your machine. Watch how smoothly it runs. Keep track of breaks or bird-nesting and other thread problems. Take note of how much time it takes to run a standard design, do you have to slow down the machine for the thread to run its best? Do you spend a lot of time re threading your machine after thread breaks? After you've gathered this data, look at the color and sheen of the thread. Are the dye lots consistent? Is the thread re-dyed? Finally, keep in mind that cheaper isn't always the best choice. Saving money on the original purchase price doesn't really save you money if you lose production time due to poor quality thread.
Next let’s discuss the effect you want the thread to produce. If you want embroidery that sparkles, metallic thread is probably the way to go. If you want variations in color and shade, you may want to investigate variegated thread. Glow in the dark thread is popular during Halloween. Color changing embroidery thread can be fun on garments that will spend a lot of time in the sun. Special effect thread is a great way to add a unique accent to your embroidered piece.
You should also keep in mind that you need to make a decision between the two most popular types of machine embroidery thread, rayon and polyester. For many years rayon was the thread of choice and , for some people it still is. One of the reasons that rayon thread was so popular for so many years was the shine the thread produced. The drawback to rayon thread is that it tends to be less durable and less color and wash fast. For durability and color fastness, you best choice may well be polyester machine embroidery thread. There are also polyester threads, like Iris UltraBrite Polyester, that have a shine that matches any rayon embroidery thread on the market.
This concludes part one of this discussion. Next week we’ll cover machine type, material type, and a few tips that may help your thread run more smoothly no matter what type or brand you’re using.................

Brands include Coats & Clark, C & C ColorTwist; The Finishing Touch; Gütermann; Isafil; Madeira; Megasheen; Mettler Silky Sheen; Mez Alcazar; Robison-Anton; Scansilk; Signature; Sulky; and Sulky Ultra Twist, Floriani and many many more.........
Many good battles have been fought by women everywhere over where the best place to purchase your fabric is..
We have Walmarts, JoAnns Fabrics, Quilt Shops, Walgreens and a hord of other stores that carry fabric..
Just remember: when it comes to fabric...
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR..........I dont care where you buy it. There is a big difference between fabric that is $2.00 a yard and fabric that is $8.95 + a yard.
For items that you do not expect to have a long shelf life then those cheap fabrics are fine. I use cheap fabrics to make Craft Items, stuffed toys, childrens play clothes (as long as its soft), pet blankets and bedding, pillows etc..things you dont expect to last a long time and you dont really care if they do or not.
Now if you are putting alot of time and effort into a project, its a gift or you wish it to be an heirloom one day I suggest going to a local
"Quilt Shop"...and yes you are going to pay higher prices anywhere from $7.95 a yard up to $25.00 a yard or more for specialty fabrics..the average price for quilt fabric is $8.95 to $14.95 a yard for high quality cottons, modah, batiks, thimbleberries etc..these are all quilting fabric types. High quality, durable and beautiful.
Now I know there are people who sware on Walmart fabrics and who never shop anywhere but JoAnns fabrics........that is fine for fabrics such as novelty fabrics, flannels, fleece, toil, what I call everyday fabrics...but say you want to make a wedding dress that you want to be an heirloom or a quilt for that special grandchild or loved one. Do you really want a fabric that is cheap? Do you want to worry about shrinkage, fraying, stretching, picking, pulls, fading, bleeding fabric dye? Well I have found that alot of the fabrics from these places have just those problems..Shrinkage and stretching or unstable weaves are the biggest problems I have found.
I always purchase Chanelle, Fleece and Flannels from JoAnns. They seem to be pretty much a Universal quality...
Walmart has pretty good quality fabrics when you can find them. Our Walmart chose to do away with the fabric department all together. Our sewing section consists of 1/2 isle of thread, sewing machines, a little ribbon, and notions..thats it.........
I personally find that ebay is good for finding good quality fabrics if you stick to brands..be careful of the novelty fabrics, they can get really cheap and alof of the fabrics sold on ebay are from walmart or joanns anyway..many are very poor quality I have found.
Now..my preference is a reasonable Quilt Shop..You need to shop around, find the best deals..Ask the shop owner if you can get a discount by buying entire bolts of fabric, ask about 50% off racks, ask if you can get a discount if you purchase a certain amount of yardage..It never hurts to ask.
And please remember everyone will give you different advice from one store to the next..Ask the same question in 5 different shops and you will usually get a different answer in each one..Do you want to know why? Its as simple as personal preferences..Each person has his or her own particular way of sewing, their favorite fabric brands, they favorite designer, their way of sewing will without a doubt be what I call a "Signature style" all their own. Becasue sewing is an individual science. Everyone has their way to do things. It doesnt mean its right or wrong unless it is right or wrong. I have gotten some pretty off the wall advice in some shops..So you ask alot of other people, join forums, make phone calls, do your research........find your own nitch and your own way and perfect it as your own "Signature style".
_________________________________________________________
Ok...Lets get on with it here..I suggest you make a list of the projects you like to do. The materials needed to do these general projects and then make a list of the types of fabrics you like to work with and jot down some general information about each that you can use as a reference sheet. This will help you to pick the appropraiate fabric for your project and take a little of the guess work out of choosing the fabric that is right for you.
_________________________________________________________
Lets begin by talking about Quilt Fabrics.........Since many people seem to be enjoying to art/craft of quilt making lets start with Quilt Fabrics..
There are many different types of quilt fabrics and you want to make sure that you use the right fabric for your project.....................
|
Fabric and Cloth Matching the right fabric/cloth to your particular project is sometimes hard to understand. You do need to use the right fabric/cloth for your projects in order for them to come out the way you wish them to. If you are unsure of the right fabric/cloth type to use do a little research first. There are many considerations to take into hand when choosing fabric/cloth..make sure you have chosen the right one for you. Just a Note: Remember when it comes to fabric "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR"..buy cheap and your end result will most likely be cheap..by good quality and you can expect a good quality project..buy exceptional fabrics and pay a reasonable price for them (nothing less than $8.95 a yard for quality quilting fabric and your project will be not only exceptional but it will be an heirloom cherished for many years to come. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The history and symbolism of the shamrock relies mainly on legend - many fascinating legends. In fact, is a shamrock real? How did the whole idea begin and what does it all mean? At times, it is difficult to separate the "absolute fact" of history from the metaphor of symbolism and legend.
The first legend is associated with the word "shamrock". What is a shamrock exactly? The word "shamrock", first used by English herbalist John Gerard in 1596, (some sources claim a reference in 1571), is the English version of the Irish/Celtic "seamroy" or "seamrog" which translates literally as "little/young clover" and its extended meaning is "summer plant" symbolising the rebirth of spring. Gerard was referring to meadow trefoils or three leafed clovers. But clover is a common, weedy plant boasting many varieties in white, blue, red, yellow and black. Which one is the shamrock? Not even the Irish agree, though many favour the white clover

The representation of the 3 kings or the Magi who visited Jesus at his birth.
"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, 'Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.' When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 'In Bethlehem in Judea,' they replied, 'for this is what the prophet has written: "But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel." '

Resurrection of Jesus:
The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of the Christian faith. In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, he declares:
“And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ: whom He raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.” (1 Corinthians 15:14-15).
“And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.” (1 Corinthians 15:17). As it turns out, no legitimate scholar or religion today denies that Jesus was a historical figure who walked the earth approximately 2,000 years ago, was a great teacher and miracle worker, and who died on a cross for the crime of blasphemy. Therefore, the only legitimate dispute is whether Jesus was the Son of God who was resurrected from the dead after His crucifixion.

Matthew’s Gospel (2:1-12) tells the story of the “wise men”who came “from the east” after the birth of Jesus. Alerted by a star which had appeared in the sky, they journeyed to Jerusalem to pay homage to the “King of the Jews.” They consulted King *Herod, who sent them to Bethlehem where they discovered and presented gifts to the infant Jesus. Warned by *God in a dream not to return to Herod with confirmation of the child’s existence, they returned to their own country. Herod, threatened by the knowledge of a potentially powerful rival, subsequently ordered the slaughter of all children aged two years and younger in Bethlehem and the region , but the *Holy Family, warned by an *angel, had fled to Egypt.
The Adoration of the Magi is one of the most important and frequently represented subjects in early Christian and medieval art. The event is celebrated, liturgically, with the feast of Epiphany (the acknowledged manifestation of God in Jesus), adopted by the late fourth century in both east and west. Although the Adoration of the Magi is linked, and often mingled in art, with scenes of the birth of Christ the magi themselves significantly represent the potential, universal acceptance of Christianity by all people.

A bealutiful Angel of Light holding a wreath. The wreath being circular symbolises eternity. Because the wreath is made up of plants that remain green throughout the holiday season it represents life in the dead of winter. The Christmas Wreath is a continuation of the Advent Wreath (A German custom in Lutheran churches). Made up of 4 candles representing the 4 weeks of Advent. One candle being lit each week. Because of the dangers of lit candles on a wreath many choose to place them on holders or in premade decrotive crafts made for the purpose of Advent. Thus the even more widespread use of Wreaths which contain no candles and can be hung anywhere usually in windows or on a door.
Some people choose to leave their wreath up all winter taking it down being the symbolism of the coming Spring.

What Makes Machine Embroidery
So Expensive? Or Is It?
I often see customers at the store literaly frown, sometimes openly, and sometimes covertly, when we quote them a price for embroidery. I can usually imagine what’s going through their mind. “You want how much just for a little thread?” or “How long can it take to sew a few stitches on my shirt?”
Understandably most of our customers have no concept of what it takes to get a “good” design into the machine and ready to sew on their garment. But that’s OK. How would they know unless someone explained it to them? Let’s face it, if they could do it themselves they wouldn’t be in your shop in the first place.
Every embroidery business undoubtedly has its own formula for calculating fees. Ultimately they are all geared toward realizing a fair profit for services rendered and recovering the costs of investments. No one wants to work for nothing and embroiderers are certainly no exception. We all believe our prices are fair and well in line with what the industry charges as a whole. In fact, some of our prices may well be below the norm for similar work elsewhere. Whatever we charge we need to make a profit or we will soon be out of business. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes before any garment can be embellished with an embroidery design. Let’s take a look at the process.
As with most businesses, there are certain tools required to perform the work. Machine embroidery is no exception. No embroidery design is worth the disk space it takes up if we don’t have an embroidery machine. Embroidery machines vary from basic home machines to multi-head commercial machines. If we’re doing embroidery commercially, most likely a home machine won’t get the job done. At the very least we’ll need to look at a single head commercial machine.
The initial investment for such a machine can easily run well into the thousands of dollars. A basic entry level commercial machine would cost in the neighborhood of $7,000.00 or $8,000.00, possibly more. To that we must add any accessories or components needed to actually put the machine in service. Not all machines come equipped with everything necessary to become productive right out of the box. We may need a floor stand, additional hoops, or specialized hat hoops designed for embroidering caps. We also must consider delivery and setup charges, if any, and supplemental training may be required. These items and more can add hundreds of dollars to the final cost of the embroidery machine.
Now that we’ve made the initial investment in our embroidery machine, are we ready to embroider? Not hardly. That’s just the beginning. Now we need to invest in thread. The thread that our hypothetical customer thought to himself about is actually quite expensive. Most small spools of top quality embroidery thread cost $5.00 to $8.00 each. Assuming we would like to have an adequate selection of colors for the customer to choose from, we’d most likely purchase at least 50 to 100 spools of thread to seed our stash. We’d want metallic thread too. Our customers like it and they request it. Top quality metallic thread can cost two to three times what a spool of regular embroidery thread would cost. We also need to purchase bobbin thread and needles. All of these items are consumable items that must be restocked as needed. They’re not simply a “one time” investment like our machine.
We’re still not quite ready to embroider. A few more things are required before we can lay down the first stitch. We’ve got our machine, our thread, our bobbins, and our needles, but we need something called stabilizer or backing. When we get ready to hoop a garment for embroidery we need stabilizer to put behind the fabric to give it some stability. Since there are many different types of stabilizer/backing for various applications, we need to stock several types and weights in our shop. We must be sure we have the type needed for the project we are about to undertake. No single stabilizer is appropriate for every application. Sometimes we need toppings too, so we need to stock them as well.
OK, we’ve got our machine, our thread, our bobbins, our needles, and our stabilizer. Surely we’re ready to start embroidering now. Well, not exactly. We don’t have any designs to embroider yet. Designs have to come from somewhere. We can’t upload a graphic image to our machine and tell it to sew. It just doesn’t work that way. The art work must first be converted to an embroidery design that includes stitch pattern instructions our machine can understand.
There are basically four options open to us for getting the embroidery designs we need. There are some free designs that can be downloaded from the internet, but the choices may be limited. The quality of the designs may not meet our standards either. Unless we can find exactly what our customers are looking for we will be unable to accommodate them.
We can purchase stock designs from digitizers that offer them for sale, but we may not be able to find exactly what we need there either. The quality may be better, but it’s unlikely we’ll be able to find a customer’s logo or personalized text for sale anywhere.
A third option would be to hire a digitizer to custom create our designs for us. This is a good option if you can find a digitizer that creates quality designs at a fair price. Turn around time is important too. How long will it take to get the completed design to you?
The cost of the designs in both options two and three would ultimately have to be passed on to the customer in one form or another. Either we would charge them a flat design charge, or we would factor it in with the final cost of each embroidered item. It may also be necessary to purchase a lisence in order to resell the designs from a given digitizer.
The fourth option would be to create our own, but before we can do that we need two more very important items – a computer and digitizing software. If we don’t already own a computer, or one that is adequate for running our digitizing software, we will need to purchase one. An old computer that lacks the necessary power to run graphic intensive programs just won’t get the job done. We’ll also need a good color printer for printing our color work sheets and design templates, and a scanner for scanning in customer provided art work.
Not only is the specialized digitizing software we’ll need extremely power hungry, but it’s also very expensive. Most of the popular digitizing software packages available today range anywhere from $1,200.00 to $3,500.00 or more. The learning curve for this software can be quite steep. Digitizing is an art that takes a considerable amount of time to master. Specialized training may be required before we can turn out acceptable, high quality designs. Just purchasing the software doesn’t make us a good digitizer.
Assuming that we have chosen option four above, we are now able to create the exact design our customer wants. This specialized service can take many hours to complete depending on the complexity of the design. Each and every stitch must be placed in exactly the right place to recreate the art work provided by the customer. Among other things, we must attempt to match colors, determine the correct stitch type, and set the proper sewing order for each segment.
As I mentioned earlier, we don’t want to work for nothing. We should be compensated for the time we spend creating designs for customers. It’s no different, in theory, than a customer commissioning an artist to create a unique painting or sculpture.
Once the design has been completed, it must then be tested on the machine before it can be sewn on the customer’s garments. But, before we can do that, we must take the time to load the proper thread colors on our machine. Once the design has been tested, any problems that we discover must be fixed and the design re-tested. When we’re finally satisfied the design is complete, we’re ready to begin work on our project.
The average embroidery design usually consists of about 8,000 to 10,000 stitches. Larger and more complex designs can be much more. Theoretically, on a 1000 stitch per minute machine it should take about 8 to 10 minutes to sew out. Average sewing time, however, is like average miles per hour in your car. Sometimes you can go fast, but there are times when you have to slow down on the curves. If there are color changes to be made, sewing time increases accordingly. In reality, sewing an average size design may take as long as 15 to 20 minutes per garment to complete. That may or may not include the time required to mark, align, and hoop the garment. Additional time is also required to un-hoop the garment, inspect it, remove the stabilizer, and trim any excess threads.
Like most professions, we do eventually find ways to shorten some of the steps in the process. As long as quality is not compromised, we look for shortcuts that aid us in completing the project in the least amount of time. The sooner we can complete one project and move on to the next, the better off we are. The old saying “Time is Money” certainly applies here.
One thing I haven’t mentioned yet is the time we spend with each customer in the initial stages of each project. We help them with design ideas, make size and placement recommendations, assist with garment choices, and many other things that are too numerous to mention. There are always special cases too. We’re often asked to do the impossible, and somehow we find a way to do it.
I’m sure there are a few things in the process that I failed to mention, but the basics are pretty well covered. Quality machine embroidery is not a push-button affair. Giving customers a product they are proud to display takes time and a lot of effort. Attention to detail must be maintained from our first meeting with the customer to the final stage of bagging up their completed garments for pickup or delivery.
We know our customers expect high quality embroidery and we intend to give it to them, but high quality embroidery comes with a price. When you factor in all the underlying costs and efforts that go into it, top quality machine embroidery isn’t such a bad deal after all. If it is done right it looks great, it sparkles, and it draws a lot of attention from passersby - just what our customer wants.
While we don’t go through this entire process each and every time, many of these steps are required for every design we sew. Machine embroidery is a highly specialized field that requires highly specialized training and equipment. It doesn’t come cheap. Neither should the embroidery!
I also didn't mention that if we make a mistake and mess up your garment customers expect us to replace it and make it right at our cost..Machine embroidery is not an exact science and machines make mistakes, go off center and jump sometimes for no reason. Mistakes are costly and must be a factor in pricing as well as other considerations possibly not mentioned.
