The Music Within Us™ developmental violin program offerings include individualized instruction with parent involvement, ensemble training, and performance opportunities for children beginning as early as age 2.5 years. Launched in Palo Alto, California, in September 2004, by Lisa S. Chu, M.D., the program is based on the highly successful model created in the Chicago area more than thirty years ago by Mrs. Betty Haag-Kuhnke, who taught Dr. Chu from age four through seventeen, and whose students have achieved international acclaim in concert. Through this unique relationship, The Music Within Us™ students have already enjoyed world-class educational and performing opportunities such as their May 2005, April 2006, and May 2007 guest appearances in the 30th, 31st, and 32nd annual spring concerts of the Betty Haag Academy onstage at Orchestra Hall, home of the Chicago Symphony, the Conservatory Music in the Mountains summer institute in Durango, Colorado in August 2005, and the Strings at Winona Lake festival in Winona Lake, Indiana in July 2006 and August 2007. Dr. Chu's students have also joined the Magical Strings of Youth performing group of the Betty Haag Academy on concert tour in Italy in 2006, and in Prague in 2008. Venues on these tours included St. Peter's Square for Pope Benedict XVI, at the Chinese Embassy in Rome, at the Rudolfinum with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, and at Smetana Hall with the Northern Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

Carmel Retreat 2008 a success!

We all had a wonderful time enjoying the beauty of Santa Lucia Preserve, getting to know each other better, and experiencing the mentoring of Mrs. Betty Haag-Kuhnke. Our final concert included a surprisingly large crowd, filling the seats at the Preserve Golf Club.

Now, Dr. Chu has one week to breathe before the 2008-2009 year starts with a flurry of local public performances!

Great story of PCA technique applied with tangible results!
Today at Milan's lesson I noticed a big improvement in his concentration and taking of feedback during the lesson. His ability to hug the violin had also improved visibly since the last lesson.

Milan's mom told me that they have started to use the Opening Ritual and Mistake Ritual at home, and she feels this has helped them a lot. She said they had been particularly skeptical of the Mistake Ritual and whether it would work, but they tried it, and they have seen great results! Milan showed me his Mistake Ritual move - he brushes his shoulder lightly and smiles.

Milan's Opening Ritual is simple, yet his mom says it is effective. He says, "It's violin time, it's violin time, it's violin time!" before he starts to practice. It helps him focus his mind on what is about to happen, instead of looking around wondering what to do.

I loved this story about being skeptical, trying something anyway, and being PLEASANTLY surprised by the results. Thanks, Carole!
Positive Coaching Alliance Discussion Topics
I'd like to start a discussion thread, hopefully to continue throughout the year, around your experiences trying out the tips and techniques outlined at our PCA seminar on Monday.

I want to hear what's useful, what's not useful, what you're putting into practice, and what you're finding a challenge or even impossible to do!

I'll try to share the occasional link from PCA's website that may illuminate a parent-youth-coach-sports issue that is relevant to our parent-youth-teacher-music relationship.

Here's a link from PCA's blog, highlighting a coach's dilemma in setting policies and boundaries with youth athletes. The comments are diverse in range, and quite interesting! http://www.positivecoach.org/Ask-PCA.aspx?id=4128
Re: Star-Spangled Banner
Great teaching aid.  Thanks for the effort I know it took to put them up.  This approach to teaching and learning is very efficient and saves wear and tear on parents and kids.  Would love to have this for Vivaldi A minor!
Re: Star-Spangled Banner
I agree with Ruth.  These videos have been really helpful.  We like having it broken into manageable parts, the clear instructions on fingering technique (with video zoom-in), as well as the repetitive exercises.  And, the production quality is really good - thank you for taking the time.  We are downloading the next set today.
Re: Star-Spangled Banner
Thanks for the feedback, Ruth! I'm glad to hear that you're using the videos, and finding them useful!

I've just posted three more videos to complete the entire piece, for the first stage of practicing.

Note that these can be used in at least two ways:
1. For new students learning the piece for the first time, taking note of the technique. You will probably have to stop and restart the video several times for the first few times you use it.

2. For students who have learned the piece in the past, it is helpful to practice at these tempos again, to make sure you are still using the correct technique, and listening carefully to your own playing.

See you all soon!

Re: Dona Nobis Recording Contest
Our recording has been submitted to the Yo-Yo Ma contest!
Check it out on the Media Library page (the last file in the Dona Nobis section) or at http://www.indabamusic.com/contests/show/yo-yomacontest

I'm very proud of what everyone did to make this collaboration a success!

Listen and enjoy the results of your efforts.

Dr. Chu
Re: Star-Spangled Banner
We have found these to be VERY helpful for Noah who is just learning the song.  The level of detail is great and has enabled us to make a number of corrections to vs 1 & 2.  Thank you for taking the time to make and post these teaching videos.  Ruth
Star-Spangled Banner
New first-stage practice videos have been posted to the site. Each is approximately 5 minutes in length. Please try them and leave comments here. I want to hear what you found helpful, surprising, confusing, or illuminating about the videos.

Also, if you find the image quality on your screen to be suboptimal, try downloading the file and replaying it as a Quicktime movie, either on your iPod or on your computer screen.

More videos for phrases 3, 4, and 5 will be posted next week.

Happy holidays!
Re: Dona Nobis Recording Contest
Just uploaded a bunch of mp3 files to the Media Library "Dona Nobis" section...

Try listening to all of them with your children.

Talk about which performance (in terms of the violin playing, not necessarily the variation) you like best.
Hint: The difference between Take 1 and Take 2 is a good illustration of how practice helps you play in tune!

We will be rerecording next Saturday!
Re: Dona Nobis Recording Contest
I have some nice .wav file recordings of our work on Saturday...but the files are larger than the 10MB limit to upload on this site!

I'm working on this problem and hope to have the files posted soon.

I hope you'll listen to all of them, and play this game: which versions are most in tune? which notes in which violin part (1, 2, or 3) are out of tune?

Stay TUNED for more updates....

Thanks!

Happiness is…
Today I had one of those moments that reaffirmed my totally irrational love of trying to teach kids to play the violin. It only lasted a few minutes, but it didn’t matter. It happened after the last several days of my thinking about how I could expand the sound repertoire of my students’ musical environment, [...]
Ad art
What’s your intention? That’s what this brilliant ad from lululemon athletica asks us: It shows a yoga class in session, with a room full of people facing us and seated with crossed legs on yoga mats, hands in front of their hearts in prayer position. Everyone is meticulously dressed in lululemon-brand yoga gear, and all their spines [...]
A visit with an old friend
Last night I sat down at the piano in my studio for the first time in a long time. My mom likes to remind me that I studied piano for more years than I did violin, and it contributed as much if not more to my overall music appreciation. She’s right (grumble). But I never [...]
Follow Your Bliss
In northern California, they say there are two seasons – brown and green. Summer is brown and winter is green. This refers to the dryness of our summer months, when the foothills around the Bay turn wheat-colored and stay that way until the rain comes in January and February. I visited Napa Valley earlier this month [...]
Child Whisperer
I have to share this incredibly insightful post from Pam Slim, entitled “Valuable Coaching Advice Straight From The Horse’s Mouth (And Nose)”. In it, she talks about how her experience at a horse whisperer workshop taught her valuable lessons about her own parenting behaviors. I started my violin school five years ago, knowing that I would [...]
Dr. Chu’s Shoes – Part Two
I wrote a blog post in 2006 entitled “Dr. Chu’s Shoes”. I hadn’t read the post recently, but I thought about it this past week when I put on high heels for the first time since May. My teacher was visiting, and out of habit I felt the need to dress up a little extra [...]
Letter to Parents
NOTE: I’m sharing this letter, originally addressed to the parents in The Music Within Us program, publicly here, because it represents my deepest commitment to the service I hope to offer in this life. May you all find the courage to ask life’s most important questions: WHO are you? And HOW do you choose to [...]
Have you found your tribe?
Here are some excerpts from Seth Godin’s recent book called Tribes (pp. 66-69, emphasis added): Imagine two classrooms with similar teachers. One has fifteen students, the other, thirty-two. Which group gets a better education? All other things being equal, the smaller class will always do better. The teacher has more time to spend customizing the lesson to [...]
Keep listening
A friend of mine, who I’ll call Steven, lives in Shanghai. He may or may not be able to read this blog, depending on whether or not it’s a day when the Chinese government decides to block access to all blogs, YouTube, and foreign news media. I wonder what it must be like to get [...]
