Time to Learn To Dance!
A new beginning clog dance class offered through Norman Parks & Recreation, will begin on Tuesday, September 14, 2010. The cost for the 8 week class is $58. Classes will be held at Whittier Middle school, located at 2000 West Brooks, in Norman. To enroll call the instructor/director, Linda Jones at 360-8018.
6:15 p.m. - Ages 6 - 12
7:15 p.m. - Adults
8:15 p.m. - Catch-up Class (Intermediate dancers that want to learn the Advanced dances)
The History of The Okie Stompers
The Okie Steppers & Adrenaline The Okie Stompers, power tap clogging dance group, based in Norman, Oklahoma, started in 1985 as The Sooner Clogging Company under the direction of Mo & Billie Schaer and performed under that name for 15 years. In 2000, Billie retired and turned the group over to Linda Jones. Currently there are three branches of The Okie Stompers:
1. The Okie Stompers (Adults) 2. Adrenaline (Teens & Young Adults) 3. The Okie Steppers (Ages 6 - 12) Clogging is the American percussive step dance that was born in the Appalachian Mountains during the settling of America and is truly our American Folk Dance. Modern clog dancing has been influenced by a myriad of traditional and modern styles.
This Oklahoma dance group has often been invited to perform by the "Country Tonite" show in Branson, Missouri and it has always been a fun trip and performance for The Stompers. It is an honor to be asked to perform in this prestigious exhibition.
The Stompers are well-known in the Oklahoma City area for performing each year at the Oklahoma State Fair, the Mayfair festival in Norman, the Watermelon Festival in Shawnee, the Main Street October Festival in Purcell, Festival of the Arts in Oklahoma City, the Annual Square Dance Convention at the Myriad, the Arcadia Round Barn fund raiser, The State Lion's Club Convention, the freshman mixer at Southern Nazarene University, The Midwest Bluegrass Festival in Shawnee and several other annual area events. Performances are also done occasionally for individual groups along with area Nursing Homes and other care facilities where the foot-tapping lively music is always appreciated by residents. The Stompers are a special group that dance for the love of clog dancing. Linda Jones is the instructor for the company and beginning classes are offered through Norman Parks & Recreation. Ages range from 6 - 80+ . A new beginning clogging class will begin on Tuesday, January 12th and will run for eight weeks.
