The renovation of its mid-century theater-in-the-round will give way to an expanded stage with a sprung floor to accommodate dance classes and performances.
Various screens will provide for creative backdrops, video streaming, films, and smart board interactions.
New seating will accommodate usage as a lecture hall and classroom presentations.
State-of-the-art sound and light systems will adapt to multiple uses: student body assemblies, liturgies, performing arts productions, as well as guest lectures and teaching/learning modules.
The expanded lobby will accommodate a growing theatre audience and provide a reception/luncheon setting for special occasions.
A stained glass image of Mary on the front exterior wall, with diffused lighting, will be the new focal point - day and night.
The upper plaza configuration will extend the Marian focus with a unique design suggesting the crown of the Queen of Heaven.
The lower courtyard, extending from the curb to the plaza stairs, will provide a much needed social setting, integrating groupings of benches, plantings, and hardscape.
Exterior painting of the facilities and window replacement.
Technology upgrades and classroom renovation.
Notre Dame High School is a prized educational treasure in the Dioceseof Monterey. This transformative project will take ND academic and social culture to a whole new level. Most of all, the renovated theater will provide a fitting liturgical home for school and community sacramentalcelebrations. The Diocese is also pleased to report that Notre Dame has $500,000 in its restricted theater account from past years of fundraising.
-Most Reverend Bishop Richard J. Garcia, D.D., Diocese of Monterey
Our community is energized, our trustees are on board, and this project has generated a tremendous buzz. We’re taking advantage of decreasing construction costs to move forward right now.
-Mark Campion, Board President and Campaign Chair
This project arose from practical needs, but it’s grown to be something truly unique for NDHS and its generations of students to come. The new campus center represents the integration of the performing arts, technological innovation, liturgical life, and community outreach. It positions Notre Dame for its next 20 years.
-Andy Bedell, Principal
An official groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday, September 9, 2010. Principal, Andy Bedell welcomed and addressed the audience, giving them the history regarding the long awaited theatre renovation and school transformation project. Mayor Dennis Donohue offered his congratulatory remarks and commented on the value of the project, not only for the students but for the entire community. With gold shovels in hand, the distinguished guests participated in the groundbreaking tradition by "turning the soil”. The project then received a special blessing by Bishop Richard Garcia. Mark Campion, president of the Notre Dame Board of Trustees, closed the event by gratefully acknowledging the individuals and businesses whose gifts made it possible to begin the transformation of Notre Dame. An additional one million dollars still needs to be raised to meet the campaign goal.
