"Bear Aware Bridge" Cache GC1X7Q1
Near Bells Flats, Kodiak, Alaska N 57° 42.566 W 152° 34.107 This would of been an easy cache, if I would of read the directions on the site right. It said to park at the coordinates and keep your eyes peeled. Well we were using the gps to search the "parking spot" instead of going out and searching elsewhere. Yeah it took an hour until we got our browser working on our Blackberry, so we could reread the log and Ray realized it wasn't going to be at that spot, silly Mommy. So after a little while of thinking over the hint and Ray doing some trekking, he found it! Made a friend with a Coastie Kid that was fishing by the bridge too. He had to be sly and put the cache back when the kid wasn't looking. His line was stuck, so he was talking Ray's ear off, while I was wondering if he fell in the river or not because I had to stay by he car to keep an eye on sleeping Benji! I guess geocaching wore him out. We left a "glowstick" because it was a huge container and maybe someone could flag down the salmons with it at night. They were jumping out of the water. Sorry no pictures of that. However, Benji did get to see that and also the stream where the fish all died after they spawned. It was sort of sad to see them all washed up on the rocks, but they did their "job" and that's how nature goes.
Overall, it was a cool cache. A great place to "park" and watch the salmon and next summer hopefully see a bear!

"Any Day" Cache GC169AV
Old Woman Mountain, Kodiak, Alaska N 57° 44.329 W 152° 31.873
This adventure was not about the cache for once. This was about me being able to climb a mountain with my husband and son. After much perserverance, determination and watching my husband and son keep climbing higher and higher, I did it! The geocache owner said this was a fairly easy hike for the family, yet on the Kodiak.org website they said it was a "moderate" climb and I believe them. It may be easy if you are in good shape or active. But it was really hard on my back and knees, especially coming back down. So bring plenty of water for the family and wear light clothing unless its raining. I think if I had actually hiking boots that would of helped as well.
Well as for the cache, the husband and son found it. There was no way I was climbing the side of a mountain to get the cache. I climbed to the lower area and picked some berries, while he climbed the side and up. First, I'm afraid of heights, which I have slowly been getting over and second, I'm so clumsy, I don't want to risk rolling down the mountainside! Hah. The cache was a fairly decent size, we grabbed the blue mini soccerball and left a flashlight. There were several small groups of hikers that were headed to the top as we were leaving. It was pretty late already, i'm sure they weren't there for the cache though.
Anyway, as hard a hike it was for me, it was still breathtaking in every way. To be able to really get to see the island from above was amazing. We could even look down and see our house, the mountain was in our back yard, so to speak. We saw many of the local flora that we have been reading about in a book Ray bought me, so that was neat to. It was also fun to let Benji run around at the top a bit, it was a huge flat area. We did have to go chase after him several times, but Ray got a much needed break from carrying 20 lbs extra up the mountain.
Just being at the top, surrounded by a light mist and staring face to face with another mountain was incredible. The mountains were a lush green, scattered with Fireweed and Goldenrod flowers, as well as salmonberries and crowberries. We are planning to go back nex summer and hopefully spend more time at the top, relaxing; breathing the fresh air and enjoying the solitude.
So if you are doing this for the cache, don't! You will miss out on the beauty of Kodiak. Take your time to explore nature and the views of Women's Bay. And if you have time, find the cache. It's such a minimal part of the adventure. And that's what geocaching should be about.

"Around We Go" Cache GC116ED
Kodiak, Alaska N 57° 46.893 W 152° 24.039
This was a nice park to visit. I hope to go back and spend some more time there one day. It would be nice to have a little picnic and enjoy the views. It is also a great park to learn about some of the local plants. We found some Devil's Club and read up on that. We also found some salmonberries walking along the trail. We only went there and got the cache, so i'm curious what the rest of the park was like. Benji loved being able to walk around everywhere of course! He was so upset when we had to carry him part way through, but he doesn't understand, "umm that plant is poisonous, Don't touch," yet! This would be a nice little walk for some older kids too!
