Panama City 2011

001 - Our Plane at MSP
The cockpit windows were particularly interesting to me.

002 - Leaving MN
Notice the snow on the ground

003 - Hwys 494 & 100
I'm pretty sure we took off to the west and curled south beyond the intersection of I-494 and MN-100.

004 - Georgia Housing Development
Coming out of the clouds, we saw lots of clearings with housing developments in various stages of construction.

005 - Georgia Trees
Lots of pines and lots of trees without leaves

006 - Landing
Getting closer to the ground in Atlanta

007 - Welcome to Atlanta
The hill in the distance reads "Welcome to Atlanta."

008 - Our Plane at ATL
A smaller CRJ plane for the puddle jump to northwest Florida.

009 - Baggage Loader
I'm pretty sure these are bags people tried to carry onto the plane but were forced to check due to space limitations. How come they don't get charged a fee when someone else paid $25 at the front counter to put their bag under the

010 - Cloud Formation
Clouds were not completely flat. Prior to landing in Atlanta, the clouds had more "hills" consistent with the heavy rains falling over Tennessee and Kentucky.

011 - Sun
The bright sun takes away from the contrail streaming from the wing.

012 - Contrail
This one shows the contrail streaming from the wing.

013 - ECP Mural
A very patriotic wall

014 - ECP Baggage Claim
Looking down the hallway of this small international airport.

015 - First Palm Tree
We saw pine trees when landing. This was our first palm. We're still in the airport.

016 - Hotel Room View
Every room at the Days Inn - Beachfront has an oceanside balcony. It is a dreary picture because the sun has set.

017 - Waiting to Eat
Gathered at a room in the Paradise Palms waiting for people and food.

018 - Waiting to Eat
Denny Herzog arrived a day early to help serve on the welcoming committee.

019 - Waiting to Eat
Another table of socializing.

020 - Lobby at Paradise Palms
The place exhibited a little class with the chandelier in the entry.

021 - Upside Down Sign
The picture is right-side up. Someone flipped over the Exit sign, but the only letter out of place is the 't'.

022 - Rehearsal
Our first practice with the women of Harmony Shores.

023 - Rehearsal
Randy was mostly a bystander.

024 - Rehearsal
Two directors

025 - Rehearsal
The combined chorus

026 - Rehearsal
We men are lazy and need chairs while the women stand in back.

027 - Rehearsal
Some guys must stink since these women stood back as far as they could.

028 - Rehearsal
Men sitting

029 - The Directors
Barb and Randy discussing some part of a song.

030 - Rehearsal
The guys need music.

031 - Rehearsal
Judy had her part at the keyboard.

032 - Rehearsal
The women sang by memory.

033 - Rehearsal
But the men sometimes looked up.

034 - Rehearsal
Arranged like a normal choir...women in front.

035 - Rehearsal
Just because the guys are in back doesn't mean they are out of their music.

036 - Rehearsal
Still singing

037 - Trying to Remember the Song
The body language of this particular member of Harmony Shores makes it look like she was struggling to remember words or notes (or both).

038 - Rehearsal
Ladies in front

039 - Rehearsal
We only used a small part of the room.

040 - Rehearsal
Spouses and Art's sisters were present at the practice.

041 - Rehearsal
Randy took over for a session with just the guys.

042 - Rehearsal
We can sing without music...

043 - Rehearsal
Well...most of us.

044 - Rehearsal
Still singing

045 - Rehearsal
Another angle

046 - Rehearsal
Jay is always looking at his music.

047 - Judy Rehearsal
Judy got to play a little.

048 - Randy Looking at His Music
It looks like Randy has his head buried in the music.

049 - Rehearsal
Watching the director

050 - Rehearsal
The photographer made it all the way around our choir.

051 - Crab
Mike D. and I headed out to walk to beach the first night and we spotted this crab darting across the sand. It is hard to see in the ground brush, but its eyes are staring right at me.

052 - Small Palm
Not all palms soar high into the sky.

053 - Friday Morning View
This is what we saw from our balcony each morning. The wet brick was evidence of a little rain overnight. Humidity was also a factor.

054 - Ocean View
Looking straight out the room at the ocean.

055 - Police
Panama City Beach had lots of police out because our visit coincided with early Spring Break and Mardi Gras festivals. This cop was parked across the road from our hotel. Obviously he was keeping an eye on the group of old guys at the Day

056 - Lonely Shopping Cart
This shopping cart sat alone in an empty lot. There were no shopping areas nearby that would have used carts.

057 - Golf Course
Not a very good view, but there is a golf course behind the tall trees.

058 - Loading Dock
Cranes near the waters must belong to some shipping business.

059 - Buoy
Looking at the ocean...actually, it's probably part of the inner-coastal waterway.

060 - Paper Mill
This place stunk.

061 - Sign
An indication we were on land owned by an Air Force base.

062 - Air Force Boats
The Air Force is known for planes, but they also had some pretty nice boats.

063 - Fiberglass Seagull
This seagull protected a dock with some smaller Air Force watercraft.

064 - Add Punctuation to Sign
I had Art cover the word "Only," but I still need punctuation to make it read "Dangerous Area. Keep out, Employees!"

065 Air Force Speed Boat
115 HP motor

066 - Fiberglass Rock
The playground area had a climbing rock...

067 - See the Imprint
...which is obviously fake even if you didn't see the stamp.

068 - At Water
Part of our group gathered by the water.

069 - Tree Roots
This tree survives despite exposing roots to the elements.

070 - Barnacles
Any rock surface showed evidence of barnacles.

071 - Bridge
The Dupont Bridge

072 - Built on Sand
What happens when you build on sand? See for yourself.

073 - Bird
A bird on a sign.

074 - Light Pole
This light in the water must have helped guide boats away from shallow water.

075 - Toward Paper Mill
By online satellite maps, I estimate the paper mill seen earlier was 2-2.5 miles away from the park where we waited for a shuttle bus to the Air Force Base.

076 - Air Force Boats
Another view of the Air Force Boats.

077 - Flyover
A couple of fighter jets flew over while we waited.

078 - Tyndall Air Force Base
Welcome to Tyndall Air Force Base.

079 - Fighter Jet
A fighter jet in the hangar.

080 - Small Aircraft
Some fighter pilots also fly small aircraft as a hobby.

081 - Traffic Jam
The traffic jam was caused by masses trying to park and check in for the Burger Burn (picnic and 2-mile run with all of the airmen on base).

082 - Canadian Fighter
The tail indicates information about each jet. Tyndall AFB brings in lots of different planes.

083 - Traffic Control Tower
Look up the tower. We got to go up inside as part of the tour.

084 - Outdoor Hangars
Like carports in Florida: open to the elements but protected from the sun.

085 - Refueling Plane
This large plane landed while we were in the control room.

086 - Planes in a Row
I counted 18 planes lined up out there. Not in my pictures are the F-4 jets with orange tails that are used for target practice. Flight simulators only do so much. According to the tour guide, an average of 4 converted F-4s end up in the

087 - Hangar
Hangar #3 in the background housed the Raptor that we got to see up close.

088 - F22 Raptor
The tail information indicates the base (Tyndall), year of manufacturing (1991), and production number. This one was the second Raptor ever built.

089 - In the Cockpit
My turn in the cockpit.

090 - My Top Gun Moment
At the controls.

091 - Smile
Acknowledging the camera

092 - Checking Out the Controls
There were lots of buttons and video screens. However, since 1991, they have certainly added more (quantity and quality) displays.

093 - Built in 1991
Another closer view of the tail information.

094 - Remove Before Flight
This Raptor will never fly. It is used for mechanical testing. They protect sensors with covers that say "Remove Before Flight". All of them have orange tags hanging for visibility.

095 - Wear and Tear
The paint is worn...not so much from flight, but from people touching the wing. The airmen also admitted that the early planes had problems with paint bonding to the metal.

096 - Missing Engine
Here's one reason the plane won't fly...no engine.

097 - Wrecked Engine
The other engine compartment was fitted with a wrecked engine. Instead of aerilons on the wings, the aerilons are immediately behind the engine. This location makes the plane very maneuverable.

098 - Spare Office Chairs
As the base has updated their offices, they need to do something with the old assets. The airmen in the hangar were unsure why they had all these chairs. No two were alike.

099 - Rear Left
Getting a full view of the plane.

100 - Plane Rear
Another section of the plane.

101 - Warning
Painted on the ground, they will use deadly force if you go in an unauthorized area.

102 - Rear Right
Another section of the plane

103 - Some Assembly Required
Propellers for the plane in the background. They had masking tape labels "left" and "right." These planes are used for training spotters.

104 - Climb to Cockpit
The lady was our tour guide. The stairs lead to the cockpit.

105 - Refueling Plane
A closer view of the refueling plane

106 - Burger Burn
The airmen are together for lunch and volleyball....

107 - Bouncy House
...and a bouncy house.

108 - 325th Fighter Wing
We ate at the Heritage Center

109 - Jet Sculptures
Indoor sculptures. It's no surprise that they have a flight theme.

110 - Checkers
A club/bar area where we ate...although we got our food from the buffet area in another room.

111 - Water and White Sands
Nice view

112 - Forgotten Volleyball Court
I don't think the officers play much volleyball.

113 - Natural Land
Not all land is developed

114 - Officer Housing
Officers live in this housing area. It looks like a standard housing development.

115 - Walking Out of Fam Camp
This was a community for retired airmen. We sang a few songs in their community room. They tried to sell us an old pool table for $5.

116 - Penn State Fink
Isn't it typically a derogatory term to be called a fink? What a horrible last name.

117 - Toward Paper Mill
The sun came out. It's easier to see the paper mill.

118 - Bridge
The Dupont Bridge looks much better with clear skies.

119 - Auto Shop
People have pride in their jacked-up pickup trucks. There were lots of auto body shops in Panama City. There were also lots of vacant gas stations.

120 - House
Back on the road with lots of nice houses.

121 - House
Another nice house

122 - House
One of many nice houses on the oceanside street.

123 - House
The pillars definitely provide a regal appearance.

124 - House
Most houses were single-story.

125 - Historic Church Sign
St. Andrews is the oldest settlement in the area. Although I did not get a picture of the building, the sign shows it was established in 1887. We also passed what a map indicated to be a 230-year-old Oak Tree.

126 - McDonalds
Check out the fancy script.

127 - Denny Following the Van
We made our way around town in a 15-passenger van and as many other personal vehicles we needed. Denny Herzog was follo wing the van at this point, and he was probably not too happy with the route that took us into roads closed for Mardi Gr

128 - Tom Thumb
Tom Thumb convenience store. Gas prices were generally $3.30-$3.50.

129 - Hotel Pool
One focus point of our hotel was a pool with waterfalls. This is the small waterfall....

130 - Hotel Pool
This is the six-story waterfall. The pool was unheated. That's why no one ever used it.

131 - White Sands
The beach.

132 - Wave
Getting wet

133 - Waiting for Another Wave
Trying to get a good photo.

134 - Small Wave
I didn't wade in too far. The water was chilly. Perhaps similar to Lake Superior in summer.

135 - Holding My Ground
This wave went over my knees.

136 - Our Hotel
The oceanside of our hotel.

137 Shallow Water
Looking at the shadows

138 - Beached Whale Jay
Jay went in the water every day.

139 - Randy and Jay
Randy and Jay both went into the ocean.

140 - Jellyfish
We saw lots of small jellyfish washed up by the tide. This one was about 3" diameter.

141 - Days Inn
Our hotel.

142 - Fountaine Bleau
I walked more than a mile west to this hotel.

143 - Toward City Pier
Looking another 1.5 miles west toward my desired destination. However, I didn't have time to get there.

144 - Toward County Pier
This is where I came from. I'm basically halfway between the two piers.

145 - Waves
If you think some waves look suitable for surfing, I did see some people out with their boards. However, the water was on the cold side.

146 - Waves
More waves crashing.

147 - Waves
More waves

148 - Waves
You can see four levels of wave crests.

149 - Sand Dropoff
The high tide reaches a certain point and left a ledge in some places.

150 - Days Inn
Back at our hotel.

151 - Beach Condos
I walked past all of these condos.

152 - Hooters Next Door
Next to the Days Inn was Hooters. You could also find hooters on the beach. I'm not sure which were classier.

153 - Stoplight
I despise the horizontal stoplights in Wisconsin. Florida has the same style.

154 - Betsy Ann
Heading out on the dock to the paddleboat Betsy Ann.

155 - Walking toward Sunset
The sun was setting

156 - Sunset
Sun over the water

157 - Betsy Ann
Paddleboat Betsy Ann...an authentic replica. It was a true paddleboat. The paddlewheel did all of the driving.

158 - Hathaway Bridge
Hwy 98 over the water

159 - Paddlewheel
With the sun peeking between the paddles.

160 - Pilot Room
The captain has to be somewhere

161 - Captain At the Ready
The pilothouse had radar and GPS.

162 - Paddlewheel
The paddle from above

163 - Bartender Noelle
The crew consisted of just five people. This was our bartender.

164 - Bird Island
Also called Rock Island, it is the smallest island recognized by geological surveys. You could hear the birds squawking as we passed by.

165 - Patty Driving
Art's sister Patty took the wheel for a few minutes. She could barely see over the wheel, but she followed directions well.

166 - Betsy Ann Sign
The sign on top of the boat.

167 - Crewperson Amy
Since I had a picture with Noelle, it was only fair to get a picture with Amy.

168 - Hathaway Bridge Left
Left side of the bridge

169 - Hathaway Bridge Center
Center part of the bridge. See the green light over the main channel.

170 - Hathaway Bridge Right
Right side of the bridge

171 - Under the Bridge
The bridge is the first of its kind.

172 - Cannon Echo
A crew member shot a 10-gauge cannon while under the bridge. It was loud but then echoed due to the shape of the bridge.

173 - Paddlewheel Moving
You can see water droplets flying off the paddles.

174 - Randy Driving
Randy took a turn at the wheel. He didn't run into anything (such as the unlit electrical tower or channel buoys).

175 - Group on Boat
Fog was rolling in fast. I think that my camera flash picked up the water droplets in the air.

176 - Hotel Pool at Night
The waterfall pool at night. Behind it is the hot tub.

177 - Black Cat
Going out Saturday morning, Jay and I spotted a black cat. My flash made the eyes glow. The cat ran before I could try another shot.

178 - AM Twilight
On the beach before sunrise.

179 - Early Bird
The early bird gets the worm, right?

180 - Jellyfish
This jellyfish was roughly 12" diameter.

181 - Sunrise
The sun started to poke over the horizon.

182 - Sand Mound
Development started but stopped. They left a large pile of sand.

183 - Sunrise
Here comes the sun...

184 - Sunrise
A little more sun

185 - Sunrise
These pics turned out well.

186 - Sunrise
Another sunrise shot

187 - Toward Our Hotel
Getting the first kiss of sunlight.

188 - Sunrise
Sunrise at the county pier.

189 - Sunrise
Blocking the sun with the pier

190 - AM Flag
The US flag in the morning glow

191 - County Pier
People could walk out on the pier to watch for marine life or go fishing.

192 - Barnacles
Anything in the water was covered by barnacles.

193 - Waves Crashing
Morning waves

194 - Fog Rolling In
The fog rolled in through the highrise condos

195 - Jay Climbing Over
We couldn't find a clean path up to the street, so we had to climb over a fence.

196 - Need Fill Around Concrete
Shouldn't the dirt be filled to cover the base of the concrete before you place sod? This was at a dune buggy track that was under construction.

197 - Purple Haze
Purple Haze was one business that appeared repeatedly on Beach Front Drive. This one had a little mishap.

198 - Bird Lady
I called her the Bird Lady because the seagulls gathered around her even though she was not feeding them.

199 - Bird Lady
There is a peace sign in the sand to her left.

200 - Wonder Works
It was a science museum of sorts....across the street from...

201 - Ripley
Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum.

202 - Ripley
Outside

203 - Darwin Ball of Twine
The ball of twine is in Darwin, MN, but the oddity merited mention at the Ripley's museum in Panama City, FL.

204 - Ripley Fan Mail
This sign was accompanied by several samples of oddly addressed fan mail the Post Office successfully delivered.

205 - Freak Address
Here is one example of a crazy address.

206 - Washington Hatchet
Although the legend of Washington cutting down the cherry tree was fiction, that didn't stop people from trying to capitalize with the specially designed hatchet.

207 - Jade Ship
Carved from a single piece of jade. It was four feet long and the top mast reached that high.

208 - Jade Ship Description
An explanation to the jade ship

209 - Ripley Bio
Talking about the life of Robert Ripley, his cartoons, and how he began looking for oddities in the world.

210 - Setting Up for Takeoff
Two powered paragliders landed on the beach. While they took a break to rest and refuel, Mike D. and I had a chance to chat with them. This guy was getting his chute lined up for takeoff.

211 - Paraglide Preparation
With the chute in place, he strapped the motor to his back and hooked up the cords.

212 - Takeoff
He lifted the chute into the air like a kite then ran into the wind until the breeze lifted him skyward.

213 - In the Air
It didn't take him long to climb. The other guy had a more powerful motor, so his running start was shorter.

214 - Judy Prepares for Anything
At the community center for our Saturday evening concert, Judy was waiting for the keyboard stand and power cords. We found the steps to be a worthy substitute for the keyboard stand.

215 - Rehearsal
Testing the singing space

216 - Rehearsal
There I am in the middle.

217 - Rehearsal
The photographer wanted to make sure I was the focus of some shots.

218 - Rehearsal
Still singing

219 - Rehearsal
From another angle

220 - Rehearsal
We had mikes set up for the choir, but I'm not sure they did much. The one on the keyboard was necessary, though.

221 - Rehearsal
Me again

222 - Concert
Everyone is fully dressed for the concert.

223 - Concert
Judy has her corner in front.

224 - Concert
The women sang with us for three songs: "And So to Sleep Again," "Lida Rose/Will I Ever Leave You," and part of "The Armed Forces: Pride of America."

225 - Concert
Since Barb is directing, this was on of the barbershop pieces.

226 - Afterglow
Supper and socializing at a Mexican restaurant after the concert.

227 - Afterglow
More of the people

228 - Afterglow
More of the people.

229 - Afterglow
Tables on the side

230 - Afterglow
Another table

231 - AM Fog
Sunday morning brought a dense fog advisory.

232 - #1 Glob
Up the ramp the raised and lowered.

233 - Dino
This was part of the scenery at Goofy Golf, but it had nothing to do with the golfing.

234 - Full Dino
Here's a wider view of the dinosaur.

235 - Dino Rib Cage
Near the back leg was a staircase and an opening into the dinosaur. It was painted inside.

236 - Dino Tail
...including the tail section.

237 - Black Light Cave
The flash took away the effect of the black light.

238 - #2 Haunted House
A spinning windmill inside tried to block our shot.

239 - #3 Church
Since it was Sunday morning, this served as my church service.

240 - #4 Rocket
The printing GG1959 stands for "Goofy Golf, est. 1959". According to many reports, not much has changed here in 50 years.

241 - #7 Spinning Wheel
This was a tough hole to time your shot.

242 - Dino
A triceratops next to the hole. Why not?

243 - Cactus
This was next to the dinosaur.

244 - #10 Foolish Turtle
A very challenging hole. The center hole goes through, but the left and right ones are linked to return your ball to your feet.

245 - #11 Hen House
If you hit it right, the chicken laid an egg (your ball).

246 - #12 Volcano
The area around the hole was shaped like a mini volcano.

247 - #13 Ostrich
You had to time your shot around the ostrich raising his head.

248 - #14 Monkey Tail
The monkey's tail moved side-to-side slowly.

249 - #15 Sphinx
This one even had a little fact about the sphinx. A little education mixed in with the fun.

250 - #17 Snake Swallower
You are supposed to hit it into the snake's mouth and it comes out below. Only one of four did that. Mine bounced arou nd the mouth and out toward the hole. Steve and Arden hit it just soft enough to get up the ramp but not into the snake

251 - #17 Close Putts
The result of our shots toward the snake's mouth.

252 - #18 Fish
The "lose your ball hole" where a hole-in-one wins a free game...

253 - #18 Frog Inside
You had to get up the bumpy ramp inside the fish and land in the frog's mouth. It was dark inside.

254 - Let Me Out
Something ate me.

255 - Steve to the Rescue
Steve sees the monster that ate me...

256 - Attack with Golf Club
He'll save me.

257 - #1 Gator
Starting the second 18 with a gator that wants to eat your ball...which is where you should hit it.

258 - #2 Castle
The drawbridge went up and down. Mike Z. purposely took the long route through the moat.

259 - #3 Snail
The picture doesn't show how the center of the snail's shell was elevated. It was a challenge to get the ball up the spiral.

260 - #4 Windmill
A classic windmill hole

261 - #4 Windmill
Steve had a shot named after him: when the tee shot returned back to the starting point.

262 - #5 Galleon
Mike Z. had a hole-in-one on the windmill. He also had a hole-in-one on the galleon. However, all four of us scored an ace because the hole was bowl-shaped for drainage.

263 - #5 Galleon
Mike Z. at the wheel.

264 - #6 Chinese Anthill
This head was two-faced.

265 - #8 Tiki Hut
The narrow ramp inside the tiki hut was not necessary. Balls bounced on the concrete and went out the back anyway.

266 - #9 Atop the Head
There was a staircase inside the Easter Island head. I climbed to the top. I stuck my putter through a nostril, but Mike did not get that photo.

267 - #9 Enjoy the View
This was the highest point on the golf course.

268 - #9 Easter Island Head
A better angle of the head.

269 - #10 T-rex
The monkey was supposed to go up and down, but something was out of position.

270 - #11 Loop
A basic premise makes for a fun hole.

271 - #11 Under the Toadstool
Steve taking a break.

272 - #12 Spiderweb
There was no motor to raise and lower the spider.

273 - #12 Spider
We set the spider in place and played around it.

274 - #13 Outhouse
No one landed in the poop hole.

275 - Prior Holes
Looking back at the spider web, T-rex, and Easter Island head.

276 - #14 Octopus
Three possible paths to the back end.

277 - #15 Dino
Hit it into the stegosaurus.

278 - #16 Buddha
Hit it below and the ball came out through Buddha's hands.

279 - #17 Paddlewheel
Steve jammed his ball under the paddlewheel.

280 - #18 Snake Hole
The other "lose your ball" hole. A smaller target up the narrow ramp.

281 - Goofy Golf
Proof of where we played. Then the van picked us up to eat lunch at the Waffle House.

282 - Tile Flag
In the garden at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Sunny Hills, FL.

283 - St. Theresa
The church where we sang Sunday afternoon.

284 - Singing Venue
The room where we sang. It was quite noisy.

285 - Harmony Shores
The women. They were missing quite a few members.

286 - Concert
Singing together.

287 - Concert
Both groups.

288 - LAMC
The men were instructed to dress casually. Jay wore his LAMC polo.

289 - LAMC
Just the men again.

290 - LAMC
Another one of the men.

291 - Sanctuary
The sanctuary of St. Theresa's.

292 - Altar
The altar

293 - Ellson Siblings
Shh...don't look at what Mike is doing to Art.

294 - Sunset
Just after the sun disappeared

295 - Yellow Pines
There were more pine trees than palms in this area of Florida.

296 - Sand Castle
Walking the beach at night. Some sand castles were built where the tide couldn't reach.

297 - Eroding Gator
This alligator saw a little salt water.

298 - Sand Castle
Another sand castle. I only saw three people on the beach Sunday night. I walked 3 miles to the City Pier.

299 - Sand Castle
Some sand castles were a little better than others.

300 - Lifeguard Chair
Just west of the city pier, I found a lifeguard chair and signs that said "No dogs beyond this point" (going east).

301 - Pier Fees
Anyone could go out on the piers...for a price.

302 - Pier Park
A shopping center. I made it here Sunday night by walking. We drove here much faster Monday morning.

303 - Gulf World
This marine center guarantees the opportunity to swim with dolphins.

304 - Nature Warning
Despite development, they made efforts to protect dune grasses.

305 - For Sale
There was plenty of oceanfront for sale. I heard that a hurricane a couple years ago devastated parts of Panama City Beach. In 2010, they suffered because of the oil spill even though they saw few tar balls.

306 - Humidity Warning
The hotel room warned to keep doors shut. If you had your door(s) open, staff would yell at you.

307 - The Beach
White sands

308 - Waves
One last time looking at the ocean

309 - Waves
The wind Monday raised surf warnings from yellow to red. Flags posted along the beach showed the surf warnings.

310 - Waves
If you look carefully, the near water is green-blue. So is the water at the far waves. Between is a strip of dark blue. Buoys marked the first drop off.

311 - Heated Pool
There was a heated pool at the building next door. We just had to walk through a couple latched gates.

312 - Waterfall Pool
One last look at our pool

313 - Days Inn
One last look at our hotel

314 - Turtle Fountain
Turtles spitting water at the Pier Park shopping area. Notice Smok'N'Butts Barbeque. I ate at Margaritaville instead.

315 - Giant Beach Ball
Big fun

316 - Pier Park
The sign in the daylight.

317 - Target
Anyone have a bow and arrow? The shopping area was anchored by Target, J.C. Penney, and Dillards.

318 - Hair Wrap

319 - Mike
Progress on the hair wrap.

320 - Flowers

321 - Mike Down
Bored at the airport, Mike Z. went down the stopped escalator...

322 - Mike Up
...and up the stairs.

323 - Seversons
I beat Betty to the photo shoot.

324 - Waiting for a Plane
Rain in Atlanta shut down their airport for a couple hours. We were stuck in ECP waiting for a plane.

325 - Empty Airport
We were the last flight of the night. Many airport workers were required to stay until we left.

326 - Jay Sleeping
Some people took advantage of the wait.

327 - Private Plane
Only two people on the plane were not part of our group. Most other people flying out rescheduled for Tuesday so they could sleep in their own beds one more night.

328 - Private Plane
Lots of open seats.

329 - Private Plane
The back part of the plane.

330 - Columbus, GA
Looking at city lights. Using Google Maps satellite view, I reasoned that this is Columbus, GA.

331 - Engine View
They seated part of our group in the tail section of the plane. There was not much to view.

332 - Columbus OH Plane
Aboard a plane in Columbus, OH bound for Minneapolis.

333 - Gate 55 In, 54 Out
We landed at Gate 55 and left from Gate 54. We had an hour to make the trek and get a quick lunch.

334 - I-71 North of Columbus
Again identifying the location using Google Maps.

335 - OSU Airport
Another airport

336 - Marysville OH
Another city

337 - Honda Manufacturing & Test Track
I spotted the race track. When I looked at Google Maps, I found that the building belongs to Honda Manufacturing. Therefore, the track must be used to test motorcycles.

338 - Indian Lake OH
I hope that is ice coming off the lake, not foam.

339 - Snow Line
Getting further north.

340 - Lake Michigan
Going to fly over water

341 - Over Benton Harbor MI
We entered east of South Bend, IN

342 - Milwaukee
Coming back over land, that is Milwaukee below us.

343 - Green Lake WI
Identified with Google Maps.

344 - Eau Claire WI
Another city.

345 - Entering MN
Crossing the Mississippi River

346 - Banking Right
We banked hard right

347 - Prescott WI
This gave us a good view of Prescott, WI. One flight attendant who seemed to be training a younger one pointed out that she lives here.

348 - Over Hastings MN
The US-61 bridge is in the bottom right corner.

349 - MN 55 & Lone Oak Rd
The Country Inn & Suites and McDonald's I have passed many times on MN-55.

350 - St Paul Skyline
We had a good view of the St. Paul skyline and the capitol building.

Duluth 2010

001 - Enger Tower
One of the icons proving I was in Duluth

002 - Two Lift Bridges
The road around the DECC had no auto traffic because it was closed for the Tall Ship festival.

003 - Pirates Coming

012 - Unloading
This sailboat pulled up next to the pier to let a couple people off.

013 - Professionals
While the amateurs sat, professionals prepared their cameras for the next group of ships. I think they were involved with local news agencies.

014 - Watching the ships
The ships are slowly getting closer.

015 - More ships

056 - Regular cargo ship
The tall ships did not stop cargo ships, except that the cargo ships moved during evening, overnight, and morning hours.

057 - Sailboats waiting
The bridge will not rise specifically for personal sailboats. It will open at certain intervals or if a larger ship requests passage. Look at how empty the boardwalk is now.

058 - Teens on the crib
Lots of teens climbed Uncle Harvey's Mausoleum on this warm day. It provided a pretty good vantage point for watching the tall ships.

059 - Teens on the crib
Some of them actually did jump into the water.

Psych Hallway
New color scheme in Valders

Third Floor Ramp
Instead of going down and up, it's level across the central open area.

Stairs Replaced Ramp
The top floor is accessed by stairs or elevator only.

Valders Study Hole
The pit still exists.

Other Side of Ramp
Notice how flat and elegant the walkway is.

Special Note
There are chalkboards in the hallways of the new section of the building. Here someone wrote how they miss the ramp.

Laptops for Labs
The labs were not open, so I took the photo through the door glass.

Hoffman Labs Space
Study space on the upper level.

Hallway Cooler
Science requires refrigeration

Valders Lecture Hall
An updated color scheme

Another Angle
Something else was different. Others noticed it too, but we couldn't place a finger on it. Was it the steps down the middle in back?

Missing Road
They removed the road cutting between the bell green and the library lawn.

Green Security
Luther Security drives an electric vehicle. All in the name of reducing the college's carbon footprint.

Color on the Hill
There are a few colors in the trees.

Mud Field
A light rain turned the football field into a muddy mess. You can tell where most of the action took place.

Dave on Missing Road
The yellow grass is the only hint that the road ran through here. Oh, that and a lonely light pole. This is the section between the bell green and Larsen/Main.

Missing Road
Looking north where the road had gone between the bell green and library lawn.

Dave & Rachel

Blake the Winner

An honor guard presented the flag at the opening ceremony.

2009-08-12 02 Mounted Police

2009-08-12 03 Combine Demo Start
The first heat had five combines.

2009-08-12 04 Bart Bursting
The near combine almost blocked the photo. The two combines in back collided. A Bart Simpson plush had the stuffing kn

2009-08-12 05 Combine Crash
That's what we came to see.

2009-08-12 06 Reinforcement
Since the weakest part of the combine is the rear axle, this guy attached an i-beam for support.

2009-08-12 07 Swatter Umpire
In the second year of swatter soccer, we had an umpire.

2009-08-12 08 Fight for the Barrel
The umpire was more often in the way. He had funny phrases in a notebook, which he was too busy showing the crowd when

2009-08-12 09 Lost Tires
The rear tire lies sideways and the front tire is flat. That disabled him sufficiently.

Do you see why this combine is finished?

2009-08-14 04 Camel Cry
He was crying out to the adult camel giving rides.

2009-08-14 05 Monkey Stretch
It's a good thing this picture has low light.

2009-08-14 06 Playful Monkey
This monkey had ADD, jumping from a rubber ball to a stuffed animal to the ropes.

2009-08-14 07 Bare Monkey Butt
He rubbed the hair off his butt on the feeding tube. There are Cheerios waiting for him below the open end.

2009-08-14 08 Bagging a Bug
Nice parking spot.

2009-08-14 09 Porcupines
Back at the reptile exhibit, both porcupines reached the top shelf.

2009-08-14 10 Playful Raccoon
Raccoons and plastic bottles...just like nature.

2009-08-14 11 Coon & Bottle
He seemed to have fun with the bottle.

2009-08-14 12 Laid Egg Thru Cage
Now that's skill. This chicken laid an egg and safely deposited it outside the cage.

2009-08-15 01 Joel's Car
It doesn't look too bad from this angle after Friday's demo derby.

2009-08-16 01 Twisted Metal
This is the kind of damage we came to see.

2009-08-16 02 Stuck in the Mud
There was a lot of mud on the north side of the track. This car was also missing a tire.

2009-08-16 03 See the Rear Tire
There is a guy in the way, but you can still see the rear tire where is shouldn't be.

2009-08-16 04 Successful Demolition
Here's a better picture of the tire. This car is properly destroyed.

2009-08-16 05 Raised Rear

2009-08-16 12 No Front End
Not much damage in back is trumped by the damage to the engine compartment.

2009-08-16 13 No Steering
The right front tire flopped around while he was being pulled out of the arena.

2009-08-16 14 Previous Demo Damage
