Welcome to TWC's Breakaway from Cancer Photo Site

The Wellness Community is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to providing support, education and hope to people with cancer and those who care for them. Through participation in free professionally-led support groups, educational workshops, nutrition and exercise programs, and stress reduction classes, individuals affected by cancer learn vital skills that enable them to regain control, reduce isolation and restore hope regardless of the stage of their disease. The Wellness Community also collaborates with academic and medical partners to conduct evidence-based research and provide training in the field of psychosocial oncology with the goal of improving the quality of life for cancer patients and those who care for them. The Wellness Community provides support, education and hope for individuals affected by cancer at over 100 locations worldwide including 23 based and 2 international centers with 73 satellite and off-site programs and online at www.thewellnesscommunity.org.

Breakaway from Cancer 2009

  2009 marks The Wellness Community’s fourth year participating in Breakaway from Cancer (BFC), the charitable component to the Amgen Tour of California’s (ATOC) cycling race.  This year was met with unprecedented success! Initial attendance estimates along the eight day cycling race indicate that over 2 million people came out to see the world’s finest cyclists compete in the premiere American cycling event.  Among these cyclists was cancer survivor/advocate and 7-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong. In fact, after a grueling 100-mile stage on Thursday, February 19th, Armstrong visited TWC-Valley/Ventura’s satellite in Paso Robles. 

    The ATOC kicked off in Sacramento on February 14th spiraled through the central coast wine country and finished in Escondino on February 22nd. Spanning the coast of California, TWC and its fellow Breakaway from Cancer partners including the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, the Patient Advocate Foundation, and the Prevent Cancer Foundation, had the opportunity to connect with tens of thousands of ATOC spectators who came out to support the sport of cycling and enjoy the Lifestyle Festival.  We hope you enjoy these photos from our trip!
