Watch Animal Planet Investigates: Petland -- Monday, May 20
Please mark Monday, May 17 at 9pm on your TV viewing calendar! Animal Planet is airing a must-see program: ANIMAL PLANET INVESTIGATES: PETLAND. The program is a documentary about little-known dirty little secrets about one of the worst forms of animal cruelty - puppy mills. After watching this program, if you are shocked and angry, please channel that energy into helping the helpless animals who suffer at the hands of the hundreds of puppy mill breeders here in TEXAS by joining Texas Humane Legislation Network. We are introducing a PUPPY MILL BILL that would require commercial breeders to provide humane treatment and suitable living conditions for animals in their “care.” We are working hard to get support in the Texas Legislature for this bill and need your help to be successful this session!
Watch the show...

When: May 17, 2010

Dear Friends,
A few days ago we asked you to respond to Brownsville Mayor Pat Ahumada's request concerning the brutal murder of a puppy that was killed by an act of violence and rage. The mayor asked us to individually contact the Cameron County District Attorney and urge him to bring felony charges against the perpetrator of this senseless crime.
We received word today from the mayor that the District Attorney will indeed bring felony charges against the defendant. The mayor also sent a personal note of gratitude:
On behalf of Brownsville PAWS and myself, I want to thank all the rescue groups and citizens for taking the time to put pressure to get the appropriate indictment. I also extend our gratitude to the District Attorney's office for listening to all those who called and wrote in asking that this matter be revisited and treated as a felony.
Congratulations to all for making sure the message got out and that this puppy's loss of life was not in vain. Please let everyone know within your network of the good news and be sure to thank the D.A. and all the media for supporting our call for justice.
Kindest regards,
Pat Ahumada
And on behalf of The Network, thank you again for making your voice heard. A felony conviction will send a strong message to the community that cruelty and violence against defenseless animals will not be tolerated.
In addition, we are also very excited to be meeting with the Mayor and State Represenative Luceo III on February 15, 2010 to speak with them about the need for a THLN chapter in Brownsville. This could potentially be our 11th chapter in the State making a difference in the lives of animals.
Sincerely,
Cile Holloway
President
News You Can Use
Dear Friends and THLN supporters in Texas State Representative District 66:
District 66 has been extremely fortunate to have the representation of Representative Brian McCall over the past 18 years. This year Brian has announced that he would not seek re-election.
After speaking with candidate Mabrie Jackson (R) who will be running for this open seat, we wanted to make sure all our supporters who live in district 66 or zip codes 75023, 75024, 75025, 75075, 75093 knew about her upcoming campaign kick-off reception and fundraiser:
Wednesday, January 13, 2010
Haggard Party Barn
5948 McKamy Trail
Plano, TX 75024
5:30pm - 8:00pm
This event will be an excellent opportunity for you to meet this candidate and discuss with her THLN's mission to promote animal welfare through legislation and education. It will also be an excellent opportunity to discuss THLN's legislative agenda for 2011 which will include: (i) a bill to regulate commercial dog and cat breeders; and (ii) a bill to strengthen the Texas Statute outlawing cockfighting and related activities. It's at events like this when you can find out a candidate's views and policy position on animal welfare issues which is critical to our success in future legislative sessions. Please make every effort to go to this event if possible and feel free to report back to us on your visit and discussions with the candidate.
As always thank you for your support and we look forward to keeping you informed of our 2011 legislative agenda and State campaign election results.
In addition, we would like to invite you to the 1st THLN North Texas Chapter meeting of 2010. As you know we now have 10 chapters throughout the State and this is where you can get involved. Please plan to attend this meeting for some great information and to help us accomplish our goals in 2010 for the animals!

End of Session Report
Most Recent: 2009 Legislative Session
This year's legislative session was a devastating loss for Texas animals and the animal welfare community. Good animal protection bills were killed -- not because they lacked merit and support -- but because they fell victim to House and Senate trade-offs and bill sabotage that served neither the interest of the decent people of this state nor the animals.
To this end, the puppy millers and the cockfighters, who shared the same legislative counsel, are savoring their joint victories as the clear winners of the 2009 Legislative session.
The losers? The dogs and cats who will continue to languish in the cruel and squalid conditions of mass breeding facilities and the gamecocks that will continue to be flayed to death with razor sharp steel blades in staged bloodsport events throughout the state.
The profiteers of such cruelty portray themselves as "pet lovers" and "game fowl raisers" to the media and the outside world, but it is by their actions and not their words that they will come to be known.
We will rebound from our defeats and begin our work anew, strengthened by the knowledge that there are more of us who oppose puppy mill cruelty and staged animal fighting than there are those who make their living from these reprehensible industries.
We will regroup, continue to increase our numbers statewide, strengthen our political relationships with our legislators - and be ready to work even harder and more effectively in the 82nd Legislative Session.
We have some exciting events in the planning stages for the months ahead to engage our newly formed regional chapters and to help raise public awareness about THLN and our fight against animal cruelty.
Thank you for ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK this session and please know that your local efforts helped win the support of many of your legislators. Both the puppy mill and the cockfighting bills passed the House of Representatives with overwhelming support, which was no easy feat.
Many good bills take more than one session to be successful, so let's build on the groundwork we've laid and move ahead.

THLN Conference in Austin--2009
The first annual THLN Conference was great! Several members of the North Texas Chapter attended and came away with tons of valuable information that we'll be putting to good use this year. The conference helped raise much-needed funds for our lobbying efforts...and we had a great time getting to know each other and members of the other THLN chapters from across the state.
