NOTICE FROM Kenton County Library-Erlanger Branch

Dear Parents:

As we enter a new school year, we wanted to let you know what you may expect from your kids’ after-school experience at the Erlanger Branch of the Kenton County Public Library.  Over the past few years we have had increasing numbers of elementary, middle and early high school students in the library after school.  We welcome all students and are very happy and proud to be a safe and fun spot for them to come, hang out and do homework.  But we also need to make sure the library remains a comfortable place to visit for all of our patrons.

To that end, we are going to be more consistently enforcing our Code of Conduct and here’s what it will mean for library patrons of all ages:

Rule 1 (and only 1):  Everyone must abide by the rules of the Library.  In addition to the Code of Conduct, the “golden rule” is that it’s everyone’s library – therefore:

a)   If you behave in such a way as to prevent anyone else from using the library, you must stop.

b)   If you will not or cannot stop behaving in a way that negatively impacts other patrons or staff, you must leave the premises – including the grounds.

The kinds of behavior that we see most often in the after-school crowd are fights (both verbal and physical), loud physical play, disregard of staff’s directions and loitering in the parking lot (which includes skateboarding, smoking, and other activities which are expressly forbidden in posted library policies).  All of these behaviors disturb other users, monopolize staff, are often dangerous to the student and other patrons, and generally interfere with the operations of the library.

If any child is behaving in any of the above described ways, we will make our expectations clear to them.  They can stay in the library if they behave.  If they cannot or will not behave after being sufficiently warned, we will suspend them from the library and its grounds for the day or longer, depending on the infraction.  We will follow the same procedure in every case and suspensions will escalate for habitual offenders.

If the young patron is over 12 years of age, we will not notify their parents.  If the child is 12 or under, a staff member will call a parent or guardian and ask for them to pick up their child.   If we cannot reach a parent or no one arrives within 15 minutes to remove the child from the building, we will call the police to handle the situation.  According to the library’s Safe Child Policy, children 12 and under should not be in the library unaccompanied by an adult at any time.

We hope you will share this information with your children if coming to the library is part of your child’s after school routine.  I hope we can depend on your assistance with keeping the Erlanger Branch library a comfortable and pleasant place for everyone.  We know you have as much interest as we do in keeping your children safe and behaving well.  All staff members have been trained in the procedures described above and we will enforce these rules consistently and keep records of every suspension so that we can share that information with you should your child be suspended.  We will be very happy to discuss any problems with you at any time.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly at sbanks@kentonlibrary.org or by phone at 962-4001.

Best regards and great thanks,

Sue Banks, Manager
