TNAC - Pictures

This Website is dedicated to the memory of Bob O'Brien. "O.B" has passed but his wit and good cheer are still with us. In 1989 Bob sketched cartoon likenesses of 12 of us and photos of his poster can be seen in the " O.B." Gallery section along with other memorabilia. For several years his family held a large golf tournament in his name drawing hundreds of his friends and family.

TNAC stands for Thursday Night Athletic Club and was born in the late 1960's on Chicago's southeast side as "shirts & skins" basketball competition meeting weekly in a grammar school gymnasium.

As knee operations slowly took their inevitable toll basketball faded into the glorious past. However TNAC members have continued with their second passion, golf. Competing on some of Chicagoland's most famous public golf courses we take full advantage of senior rates and play at least once a week as weather permits. Currently fielding two strong teams we are also a force in area Senior golf tournaments.

To symbolize the diversity, fellowship and heritage of TNAC a logo was created by charter member Don Brokop. Big Don dubbed his creation " MushRock ", cleverly combined images of a mushroom and a shamrock. The mushroom being a favorite quisine of those members with eastern european roots, and of course the Irish are represented by the Shamrock.

The photo galleries are currently incomplete with no particular dates or locations furnished by the webmaster. Future editing should correct this oversite but for the foreseeable future this site will be "under construction." Many photos remain to be posted.

Practical uses of this website remain unclear, but ideas might include a section to log weekly golf matches and senior tournament results, a "TNAC HOLE-IN-ONE CLUB" gallery, and perhaps a link to track personal handicaps.

Bob O'Brien 1937-1992

April 1, 2009

This Website is dedicated to the memory of Bob O'Brien. "O.B" was taken by cancer in 1992 but his artwork and sense of humor are still with us. In 1989 Bob sketched cartoon likenesses of 12 of us and photos of his poster are displayed to the right. For several years his wife Jude hosted an annual golf tournament in his name drawing hundreds of Bob's friends and family.

TNAC stands for Thursday Night Athletic Club and was born in the late 1960's on Chicago's southeast side as "shirts & skins" basketball competition meeting weekly in a grammar school gymnasium.

Knee operations slowly took their toll and basketball faded into the glorious past. However TNAC has gathered new members and continues with their second passion, golf. Competing on Chicagoland's best public golf courses we take advantage of senior rates playing at least once a week as weather permits. Currently fielding two strong teams we also compete in area Senior golf tournaments.

Symbolizing TNAC'S diversity a logo was created by Don Brokop. Big Don dubbed his creation  "MushRock", cleverly combined images of a mushroom and a shamrock. The mushroom being a staple of those members with eastern european roots, and the Irish members represented by the Shamrock.

The photo galleries are currently incomplete with no particular dates or locations furnished by the webmaster. Future editing might correct this oversite but for the foreseeable future this site will be "under construction." Many photos remain to be posted. Now that we are on our new site you can order copies of any photo from Shutterfly.

We also share great memories of Bob Wilkus who brought a high level of competition and sense of humor to all TNAC activities. He will be greatly missed.

Bob Wilkus on his 1992 Hole-in-one ....

" Ah, the sky was angry that day...   It was a Wednesday, June 17, 1992.  Dean McCreary and my brother, Richard, called me to play golf with them at Glenwoodie.  Despite my oh-so-busy schedule, I managed to break away at the lure of easy money.  We were ready to tee off on number one when the heavens exploded.  A massive force five thunderstorm roared across the area, leaving the grown men crying and the women and children scattered like pinattas at a TNAC bocci game in the woods.  But, with the scent of filthy lucre still hanging in the air, we waited it out about twenty minutes.  I don't recall what I shot on the first two holes, probably a couple of birdies, but I approached the third hole with much eagerness, perhaps keenly aware of history in the line of my fire as only I could have detected it.  From the back tees, with a short right sucker pin, I drew out a five iron, much to the gasps of my competitors.  I hit it flush with a gentle power fade (this was my pre-Johnny Miller golf tape duck-hook days) and deftly landed the Topflite short of the hole.  A soft hop, skip, and jump into the cavity on the green completed my feat.  After much heartfelt congratulatory conversation from my opponents, my task was complete.  The irony of the whole affair was nearly of legend status when the following Saturday, with my usual group of golfers, the pin was in nearly the same spot.  I repeated the effort and this time hit the pin, leaving me a short tap-in birdie.  Damn, I wish they never would have moved the hole from that location! "

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Comments:

Bob, being a very close and good friend of Joyce and I
,lived a life he really enjoyed.  As you know his character was one of " I can do it" no matter what anyone said to him. He and Gerri were enjoying their life in South Carolina a place he really loved.  It came to a tragic end doing what he enjoyed.  He was a man who would do anything for you if you needed his help.  We loved his visits on Thanksgiving and our trips to visit him and Gerri. I truly will miss him.   1/23/10

To me, going way back to our TNAC basketball in the 70's, Bob will always be defined by his fierce competitive spirit and his devilish sense of humor. Beyond that I grew to know him as a very unselfish person always ready to help his friends. As you can see from this website Bob was a big contributor, never at a loss for words, and all of us will miss him very much.He died doing what he loved and excelled at, playing tennis. This will be a fitting and lasting memory for all of us and we will all remember his exuberance during his recent visit to join our annual winter gathering. This is a very sad day and my condolences to his family and friends. 1/23/10
