Autobiography

I was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin. My undergraduate career began in 1988 at Boston University when I was 17 years old. Over the 18 years that followed, I traveled internationally and lived for extended periods in various countries and continents. I painted murals, constructed sculptural installations, participated in performances, and helped produce collaborative, multi-media events, in a number of countries. I continued to return to school intermittently and remained registered as a degree-seeking student at The University of Wisconsin, Madison. I mastered silver-smithing and traded jewelry and gems while traveling. From 1996 to 1998 I studied gemology at the Gemological Association and Gem Testing Laboratory of Great Britain.

In 1999 I worked for a year as the manager of the Colored Gemstone Laboratory at Tiffany and Company in New York City. I also constructed a house of my own design in The Republic of Ireland, on my land, between 2000 and 2004. I expanded my knowledge of space and sculptural techniques during the years constructing my house. I left Ireland and my life of travel to return to an immersion in artistic and scholarly pursuits.

I entered the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the University of Arizona in 2007. Over the years my aesthetic has slowly transformed from combined-media sculptural objects of permanence to temporal expanded media installations within interactive spaces. My research and art practice continues to reflect the maturation and synthesis of years of cultural, artistic and intellectual inquiry. I am currently an MFA student at California Institute of the Arts, In the Art and Technology Program.

Artist Statement

Over the years my aesthetic has slowly transformed from combined-media sculptural objects to temporal expanded media installations that integrate sculpture within interactive spaces. Regardless of media choices, the foundation of my creative practice is a philosophical process. It is a set of rules through which I define my universe. Yoking and quieting my mind, humbling my heart and setting parameters for my creativity, provides me with a structure that enables periods of intuitive liberation. Isolating and harnessing that intuitive flow is the first tool that shapes my creations. My challenge has been to translate those moments of singular uniqueness, those idioms, into form and immersive aesthetic environments.

My recent works invite participants to explore proxemics within my works of art and experience themselves and others as components of the piece. In many of my pieces I present digital images on transparent three-dimensional surfaces. Form and image are merged in my pieces as volumetric experiences of two-dimensional visualizations. My work encourages associations of connectivity between literally and metaphorically layered concepts, images and forms. Thus far my extensive international travels have conceptually informed my art practice.  The similarities between people of all cultures, and an intentional blurring of the polarizations that divide humanity are themes that resound throughout my research and creative praxis.

Welcome

The first folder below contains 17 images as samples of my most current work.
My Artist Statement, Biography and Resume describe in further detail my trajectory as an artist, scholar and adventurer.

The folder above contains video of my last two installations in 2009 and 2010. The folders below contain images of my sculpture from 2003 to the present, a commission in progress from 2009, glass works from 2007 and my property in Ireland, which are all accurate visual reflections of my life and travels.
