We camped the first night in the North Campgrounds of Lake San Antonio County Park. It is known as one of the largest eagle winter habitats in Central California.

Later we drove to the coast and went up route 1 just a few miles north of San Simeon. There is a large colony of Elephant Seals right beside the road from November through February.

The females start giving birth around Christmas but most births usually occur during the last two weeks of January.

The males arrive first and leave last after 100 or so days on the beach. That night we camped at the San Simeon State Park (about 12 miles south of the Seals), went for another bike ride and had a roaring camp fire. The next day we drove home
