Welcome to Tosuma Photography. This site features photography by Tony Acerra. Although having many natural and landscape photographs at first I will be adding sports and action photographs to build my portfolio. Hope you enjoy.

2012.05.10 Bruges Belgium Day 1 & 2

IMG_9139.JPG
Sunrise from KLM flight to Amsterdam. Moon in view.

IMG_9148.JPG
Just finishing dinner on the 9 hour flight

IMG_9152.JPG
It was soggy and rainy when we landed. Hopefully we won't get rained out too much on the tour parts of the trip.

IMG_9209.JPG
The famous bell tower (belfry) of Bruges. Here is a good Wiki article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belfry_of_Bruges

IMG_9206.JPG
Main square where we finished our carriage tour and hung out for a while.

IMG_9196.JPG
A typical street scene with narrow cobblestone streets, cafe chairs on sidewalk and people (mostly tourists like us) milling around.

IMG_9159.JPG
The Church of Our Lady. One of the many Cathedrals in Bruges. In the foreground is an alms house - a house for the elderly and poor.

IMG_9160.JPG

IMG_9182.jpg
They have river boat tours similar to the River Walk in San Antonio without the bright pastel colors of the boats and the Hawaiian shirts and Panama hats of the captains.

IMG_9185.JPG
One of the beautiful bridges over the many canals that run through the city.

IMG_9175.JPG
The canals in Bruges are beautiful. It is called the Venice of the North. For good reason.

IMG_9176.jpg

IMG_9171.jpg
The trees and landscaping there was gorgeous and lush. They're not in a drought that's for sure.

IMG_9192.JPG
Hanging out near the swans. Good photo op.

IMG_9167.jpg
They had a number of mean swans that lived in this fenced off area. There's a whole legend of why they are here: When Maximilian of Austria raised the taxes not for the first time, the citizenry of Bruges rebelled. The appointed town administrator, whose name was Pieter Lanchals (it means 'long neck'), was beheaded. When Maximilian got the power back, he made an order, according to which in Bruges swans (because they also have long necks) are to be bred till the end of the world.

IMG_9195.JPG
This was a neat watering fountain for the horse drawn carriages that give tours of the city.

IMG_9202.JPG
This was Sambo the horse that dutifully pulled our carriage around the town. He was friendly and gave Dad a good shove right after we got out of the carriage and paid our driver/guide.

IMG_9179.jpg
Sambo and our carriage await.

IMG_9210.JPG

2011.05.13 Peru Trip Day 9

IMG_7407.JPG
At our hotel in Aguas Calientes there was a birding tour in the morning. There were so many bird varieties right on the hotel grounds it was amazing.

IMG_7409.JPG
The terra cotta roof tiles grow lichens, moss and small plants because they stay moist in the cloud forest climate.

IMG_7418.JPG
A very interesting and large bird we saw on the birding tour.

IMG_7421.JPG
IMG_7421.JPG 2011-05-13

IMG_7423.JPG
Another shot of the large bird. Notice the tail shape. They actually pluck their own tail feathers to give it a shape like the vanes from an arrow.

2011.05.12 Peru Trip Day 8

IMG_6871a.JPG
We arrived up on Machu Picchu early to hopefully experience a sunrise but got a better experience instead...the cloud shrouded Inca city materialized out of the mist like a ghost. Goosebumps!

Entrance to the city. Had to get Dad at the doorway...

IMG_6905.JPG
The doorways the Incas built featured little nitches on each side of the doorway where doors could be tied to as well as eyelet carved rocks just above the door lintel. Poles or planks were used to barricade the door to protect against unwanted visitors.

The roadside and market stands were great. They sold custom mixed medicinal drinks to help with anything from constipation to a hangover.

IMG_5133.JPG
Dogs were everywhere in Cusco and in the local villages. What was interesting though is that they weren't strays. They all belonged to someone and they were well cared for. Very street smart. Didn't see any roadkill of any kind much less dogs.

This picture is important since it shows the 3 types of hats worn by traditional Peruvian women. The tall white hat (top center) signifies that this woman completed primary and secondary school (K-12). The shorter darker fedora (middle left) means that this woman completed primary school (K-6). The flat had covered in colorful cloth means that this woman hasn't completed primary school or has not attend school yet. Education plays a significant part of the social class system in Peru.
