About this Site

Morley and I make semi-regular trips to the Chinendega area in Nicaragua to do mission work with a local non-profit group. Our latest trip--the one documented here--was in August, 2008.

Part of the reason I'm posting these photos is because I promised some photos to our friend Sam who travels all over the world in his work and sends me photos of fascinating, exotic places I'll never get to see for myself. Probably the only place in the world Sam hasn't been to is Nicaragua, so to fill in the blanks for him I posted these photos. Now, Sam, you've truly seen the whole world.

PS  I have hundreds of photos so it will take me awhile to pick thru them and post the best ones.  Check back as I'll be adding more as time permits.

This house was originally built as the private home of a local doctor.  You'd think the neighbors would be unhappy that the swanky house was now used as a mission house with trucks coming and going all day long, but nobody seemed to mind.

Our house had an iron security gate at the street and was surrounded by a stone fence with glass shards embedded in the top to keep out any bad guys. Juan the security guard patroled the house from sunset to sunrise every day.

The Nicaragua Electrical Code is not quite so picky as the American equivalent.

The front porch was the center of all social activity in the house and was the site of our nightly cocktail hour featuring the local beer, Tona.  The big entertainment every night was watching three lizards clinging to the ceiling near the light bulb and fighting for territory.

The front porch was also where we sat around waiting for our limo (the truck) to pick us up and transport us out to the village for the day. The lady in the yellow shirt is Morley's sister Carol.

The house was originally built as the private home for a local doctor. Bet he didn't use a tarp to keep the rain out back then. This area flooded during a particularly heavy rain while we were there and required some bailing.

Deluxe Accomodations
No comprendo "Seely Posturepedic". We learned that stacking about three mattresses on top of each other provided a little cushion from the iron bed frame.

The tarp hung over the balcony that was our bedroom provided lots of fresh evening air

Here's where we took our daily cold shower (there is no water heater in the house).

Okay, so the "shower room" was actually out in the back yard.  There isn't really a room at all.
