Jarmila Petercakova's made sure her 16th match of the season made a statement.
Through her first 15 matches this season, the Slovakian exchange student was never challenged. No one was even close.
Despite her dominance, some wondered how she would react if pushed. How would she deal with the pressure when playing against someone of similar ability that fought for each point?
Those questions were answered Monday at CD East.
Two-time defending Mid-Penn Class AAA singles champion Jenna Hessert of Northern found some chinks in Petercakova's armor throughout their finals match. But when the big points were in doubt, it was the Mechanicsburg ace coming up huge in a 6-4, 6-4 nail-biter that drew rave reviews from all in attendance.
"I was a little nervous but not too much," said Petercakova, a 16-year-old sophomore who is 16-0 on the season. "It was a great match. I can't believe I won it. It was very exciting."
And for once, it was tough.
Hessert is a scrappy player that tracks everything down and thinks throughout her points. That legacy grew larger in the straight-set loss.
Despite an arm injury, Hessert used solid net play to storm back from a 4-1 deficit in the first and pulled to within 4-3.
"I was a little worried," said Petercakova, who had 12 winners and 17 unforced errors in the set. "She went to the net a lot and is really good there. She also runs everything down. I just had to play my game and go for it."
The weather report said intermitant showers! Can you say "Hurricane Harrsiburg"! The rains started at 6:50pm and didnt let up until the final blocked extra point and the Wildcat victory against Susquehanna. Coach Hakel told channel 27 that "the kids battled all night" and battle they did.....After watching the first series I thought it looked like Susquehanna would run roughshod all over us, but the Cats tightened up the line and buckled down the edges to put a stop to the strong running game of Susquehanna and came out with a hard fought victory. Thriller is an understatement!
Go Cats!!!!!
Last night in Dillsburg the lady cats volleyball team proved to be too strong for the lady bears. The JV ladies made it interesting in the 3rd game but pulled out a victory with an incredible dig by Veronica Bishop, miraculously fell into open space for the final point. The Varsity game was somewhat of a snoozer as the ladies, led by "Em" Fraser and Anna Crisci, dominated every ball and found every open space with ease. It was nice to see so much student support for our ladies in the form of a rag tag group of juniors and seniors who showed up to cheer every ace.
Go Cats!!!!!!!
Last night the Lady cats volleyball team put the whip on the Big Springs Varsity and JV teams.
JV 2-0 and Varsity 3-0. Great job girls! Look for the pictures on the picture tab of this site.
Looks like tonight will prove to be a strong test for both defenses as the Cats look to go 2-0!
GOOOO CATS!!!!!!
