Latest news from Mark

Fall, 2010 Update

I can't believe how fast the summer went, and how quickly Mark got to his Junior year! Yikes! Many of you got to visit with him over the summer and know  that he is happy and doing really well. He loved his time aboard Eagle this summer and hopes to be selected next summer when Eagle sails from Germany to America after celebrating it's 75th birthday. Check out the photos Mark and Justin took during "guest week" aboard the ship. It was a fantastic experience for Justin and I was very jealous.
Mark starts hockey at the end of September, and he's been busy most weekends competing with the triathlon club. He recently participated in the Nation's Tri along with Uncle Tim, and was in NJ for the most recent one with fellow teammate Ian. Those 4:30am practices will be starting up soon :-D
Mark still enjoys receiving mail so send him a funny card if you think of it!
Cheers,
Peggy

Fall Semester, 2009

Here it is November and I’m just posting for the first time this school year! Mark is having a challenging yet successful fall semester – taking four engineering classes at once with two labs. His academic plate is full, but he says this will be the toughest semester – probably for the rest of his time at the academy! Fall brought the triathlon season with highlight races in RI and DC- and the start of the ice hockey season with 4am wake up every morning for practice before school. I don’t know how they do it.  Mark has been playing in many of the games, but a win still eludes them. We had a great visit in October for parent’s weekend (see photos) and Mark got to fly to AZ for Thanksgiving week. His grades made him eligible for recruiting leave, so he got four extra days of vacation and visited six high schools to talk about CGA to prospective students and guidance counselors. Exams are coming up in the next week and a half, then it’s a break for Christmas and New Year’s.

Fall, 2009 Back to School.....

After an amazing summer in Alaska, aboard the Eagle, and vacation with family and friends, Mark returned to school on the 16th of August.  His roommate is a good friend and he has a third floor, river view (air conditioned!) room.  He’s swamped with school – four engineering classes 8am to 3pm M, W, F and two labs each on Tu and Thu. He told me his four books cost him $660!!   I was very happy to see US News and World Report ranked CGA number 15 in the country for engineering! Mark is still involved with Model UN (he’s the only non-gov major on the team) and they head to Georgetown this October for the Fall conference.  He’s also still part of the triathlon team and signed up for the DC mini-tri (not sure when).

We can’t wait to visit in September for parents weekend! I plan to make a CD of his summer photographs so I can post them and update my pictures!

Kodiak, Alaska

Mark arrived in Kodiak after more than 24 hours of travel time!  One amusing story involved the high school baseball team from Kodiak.  They were on the same flight with Mark from Anchorage, heading home after a game.  Instead of buses these teams fly everywhere to play each other.  The same plane turned around to take the track and field team from Anchorage home after their meet. I can’t imagine!

Luckily Mark had a couple of days to get his bearings – he is four hours behind east coast time. It starts to get dark around 10:30pm and light by 3am.  There are a handful of cadets in Kodiak (six total I think) and he and two friends did some hiking. Photos have been uploaded on facebook, but I won’t have access to them for my site until later this summer.  It is beautiful right now – still snow on the ground – but sweatshirt weather when it isn’t raining (which it does quite often). He’s staying on board the cutter and shares quarters with another cadet from school.  Day three he was up at 6am and on duty, which rotates every three days.  Mark’s going through training exercises and doing his share of the grunt work, but he’s got a great attitude and enjoys it all.

Bald Eagles are like pigeons –they’re everywhere.  He’s seen two killer whales so far.  Mark got to participate in Kodiak’s Charter Day festivities over Memorial Day weekend: ate half an Alaskan King Crab w/five monster legs for $15 – no butter needed.  Said it was the sweetest crab he ever tasted and fresh from the Bering Sea!  Anyone been watching “Deadliest Catch” on TV?!? I asked Mark if he saw any of those guys in Dutch Harbor but no celebrity sightings yet ;-)

They left for their two-week tour to Dutch Harbor and surrounding area last Monday.  Mark had a chance to call us once last weekend – there are no cell towers so he bought a phone card. They are servicing buoys and patrolling the waters – which have been relatively calm. No motion sickness for him, thank goodness! He likes the crew and they are giving him positive feedback. Once Mark returns to Kodiak he’ll be packing up to head for Bermuda where he’ll board the tall ship Eagle for a six week tour up the east coast.  His longest port call will be in Boston – six days July 6 to 11.  He will have some liberty during that time.

Every time we talk with Mark he sounds really good; happy and enjoying the work.  He is looking forward to vacation too – I’ll be picking him up in New London at the end of July and he’ll get to visit with friends and family, and join us for our annual trip down to North Carolina.

Last Day of Classes! April 29, 2009

It’s hard to believe today is the last day of classes! Mark wrote his last English paper EVER last week (he was very happy about that milestone) and is now looking ahead to finals in Differential Equations, Chemistry and Economics.  Earlier in the month he passed two military board exams with perfect scores; and when 100 percent of his class passed, it entitled them to certain privileges: access to his face book account (very exciting), no longer bracing up in the hallways, and getting to eat like a normal person again!  Mark still has to wear his uniform when he is off-campus, but next year he’ll be allowed to wear a polo shirt and khaki pants when he leaves school. When the senior class graduates next week then Mark will officially become a 3/c and wear one stripe on his shoulder boards!

He just found out today that he has been assigned to “Charlie” Company for the next three years.  We thought that was a funny coincidence.  Charlie Company is responsible for academics and honor code so I’m not surprised they put Mark in with that group! Unfortunately none of his friends from Foxtrot Company are moving with him, but most of them will only be two floors above in their residence hall.  I had a chance to take Mark and his friends out to dinner last weekend (check out the group photo!).  We celebrated survival of the first year with dinner at a seafood restaurant, then swimming at the hotel pool.  They’re a great bunch of kids, and it was fun to get to know them.

On Saturday, May 9, Mark will be heading to Kodiak Alaska.  He is flying commercial from Providence RI with 4 plane changes along the way - Leaving at 6:30am EST arriving in Kodiak 12:30am the next day.  Mark is SO excited about the summer and is counting down the days.  In the mean time he has to pack and store all of his belongings and pack one sea bag which will hold everything he needs for the entire summer!  From Alaska Mark heads to Bermuda, possibly direct, to board the tall ship Eagle.  Then meets us for a fun-filled couple of weeks. All of his mail will be held till he returns in August, so I recommend not sending any letters, etc. until he gets back to school. He will travel with his cell phone but not sure what if any signal he will  have.  He’ll also have his computer and we may get e-mail correspondence but that will be intermittent I’m sure.  Mark is taking his camera and promises  to take lots of photos this summer so hopefully I’ll have plenty to share in August.

Wow, this first year seems to have flown by. We’re all so happy for Mark and everything he has accomplished so far!  Wish him luck with finals...

Summer Plans

FROM MARK

"Hi everyone!

Yesterday I found out what I will be doing for 12 weeks this summer on my 3rd class tour.  For the first 6 weeks, starting May 6th, I will be on the USCGC SPAR (WLB-206).  The SPAR is a 225 ft. long buoy tender stationed in Kodiak, Alaska.  This was my first choice and I’m really excited to go to Alaska.  While on the SPAR, I will be learning what the operational Coast Guard is all about and getting involved with the operations of the cutter. Some of the missions the SPAR performs are: Aids to Navigation, Search and Rescue and Maritime Law Enforcement.  The SPAR is docked right next to the air station in Kodiak so hopefully I can get a ride on one of the helicopters while in port.  This is going to be an amazing experience for me and all of my friends.  My two best friends, Holly and John, are both going on cutters as well. John is going to the CGC DAUNTLESS stationed in Galveson, TX and Holly is on the CGC RUSH stationed in Honolulu, HI.  For the other 6 weeks, I will be on EAGLE along with Holly and John.  We will pick up EAGLE in Bermuda and sail our way up the coast all the way to Rockland, ME stopping in Charleston, SC, Boston, MA, and Halifax, NS.  EAGLE is going to be a great experience, especially with my friends.  I’m really excited for this summer; I’ll make sure to take lots of pictures and will hopefully have many stories to share."

Update on Mark

I promised I would relate Mark's experience with "Extreme Makeover - house edition".  Well, the show had such a tremendous volunteer response that they called the Academy and told them the cadets wouldn't be needed!  How about that?!?  Mark was disappointed. Oh well!

Mark finished off his first semester at school feeling good about his grades.  He has been selected once again to represent the USCGA at a Model UN conference in Montreal, Canada.  It takes place at the end of January and he's really looking forward to it.  Mark was one of six cadets who went to the University of Pennsylvania for the first Model UN, and he was the only freshman to be selected.

He had a great winter break (although too short) with trips to NJ, Delaware, Arizona (where he got to spend time at his new home!) and Colorado.  He also managed to squeeze in attendance at the  "All-Academies" ball which took place at the Union League in Philadelphia.  He went with fellow classmates Graham, Steven and Holly and his best friend Kirsten accompanied him.  They had a blast and I've posted photos taken beforehand.

We took Mark to the airport this morning and are already counting the days until spring break when he'll be back.

Extreme Makeover: House Edition

A Connecticut family will be the beneficiary of the show "Extreme Makeover - House Edition"  this month. Students from the CGA have been offered the opportunity to help out on the project, and Mark signed up.  He's scheduled to be on site from 4am until noon this Sunday, December 7th.  I'll update the journal with his experience.  What a great opportunity.  I wonder if Ty will be there so early in the morning?!?

Here is a link to a newspaper article about the family they are helping....

News from Mark

 October/November.....

The ice hockey team started practicing at the beginning of October.  Players wake up at 4:15 every morning to get to practice :-)  Mark doesn't mind the early time slot at all.  Says it's an awesome group of guys and he loves it!  Mark played his first game in the net against Tufts University in Boston and CGA won 6-1.  He had 12 saves.  There is a senior goalie and a junior goalie who play most of the time, so he's glad to have a chance to play at all! I think the team is 3-1 so far for the season.

Mark got to take a road trip to Washington DC over Columbus Day weekend.  He spent the holiday with his friend Meryl at George Washington University and got to experience "a regular college weekend." :-)  He also had a chance to visit with extended family and attended a USA men's soccer game with his cousins.

Mark was recently selected to attend a model UN taking place at the University of Pennsylvania this month.  He was one of nine cadets chosen from the academy; and the only freshman!  He was nominated by his history professor.  We're VERY proud of him!

He's looking forward to being in New Jersey and Delaware for Thanksgiving weekend.

Parent's Weekend 2008

We had an awesome weekend with Mark!  There were 8 of us: Dad, Mom, Charlie, Julia & both sets of grandparents; Mimi & Big Dad and Grammy & Pop Pop who all traveled to New London to take part in the festivities.  Fortunately, Mark did not have duty so he got to spend the entire weekend with us.  We met up for lunch on Friday and got to tour his dorm and see his room.  Ordinarily we're not allowed in the buildings so it was great to see where he sleeps, eats (and studies).  The cadets hang their state flag outside of their rooms so I sent Mark an Arizona flag.  Even though he's never stepped foot in this state :-) he liked the flag better than Jersey and besides there were plenty of NJ flags.  His room is immaculate!  I never thought he could be so organized, but it is possible!  Everyone was surprised that Mark does his own laundry, washes and buffs his floor every day as well as makes a very precise bed in the morning.  His roommate this semester is Brendan from Maine.  He'll have a new roommate and a different room each semester.  After our tour we got to hear Mark play in the jazz band that evening.  He's happy he gets to continue playing his trombone in college.  The ice hockey coaches hosted a BBQ  so we got to meet some of the players and the staff.  Hockey isn't a varsity sport at CGA but it has a serious fan base and should be fun. I hope we make it to a game or two.   Mark doesn't mind the idea of getting up at 4am for practice....we'll check back with him on that after he's done it for a couple of weeks!  On Saturday we hit the exchange and bought all sorts of USCGA items then got in the spirit at our first football game (our team lost, but it was lots of fun anyway.)  The regimental review was impressive; all of the cadets marching on the field in full dress uniform.  Mark's in the regimental band too which he says is a little bit easier than having to perform the drill manuvers with a WWII rifle that's been filled with lead.  On Sunday morning we were up bright and early and attended mass, where Mark participates in the choir.  They were lovely and we're thrilled he has time for it.  Mark's classes are going well, and he's enjoying them which is more important.  He participated in a triatlon last weekend as a member of the 6 person team from the CGA.  He had a respectable time one hour 40 minutes.  He said the swim was in open sea water which was very tasty!  He'll be keeping up with those competitions through the fall with a personal goal to bring down his times.  He looks great and is happy, and feels good about the decision he made to attend the Academy.  He looks forward to seeing friends in DC in October and his family for Thanksgiving.

Last Day of Swab Summer

The second to last day of their Swab experience is one they won't soon forget.....

Mark and company were woken up at 3:30 am to shouting and banging.  They did 2 hours of calisthenics - ate breakfast standing at attention, then formed a line against a fence and did wall sits (knees bent, feet against the fence) passing their 40-50 pound sea bags down the line and back TWICE.  The cadre included bags filled on behalf of some swabs who were on medical shift, but who's bags still had to be included and taken care of by their fellow company members.  From there they all ran two miles to an island and then rowed back to the Academy in approx 400 lb rafts  that they carried above their heads (10 swabs per raft).  Once they reached the Academy dock they boarded a sailboat and had to sail around a buoy.  Then there was an obstacle course.... after all completed the course they had to climb up a rope 4 times WITH their sea bags (as well as extra trips up the rope to be sure that the "swabless" sea bags were taken up the rope 4 times, as well).  Then they used a fire hose to fill up buckets of water (sounds like they did some things with the fire hose as well as involving carrying around the buckets of water).

THEN it was time for lunch!!  (After each meal they had a 2 page indoctrination test.  Next based upon some formula - each swab was required to do 68 pushups and 68 situps (some swabs did extra to make sure that 68 pushups and 68 situps were done on behalf of every swab in the company).  Then there was some activity involving a giant rope and having to tie 4 kinds of knots (working together as a team) - they were not  allowed to communicate by speaking and they were not allowed to take their hands off of the rope to accomplish this task.  Echo company managed to get two knots tied (they came in second in this event).
Then there was some sort of simulated drug bust on tug boats that were at the dock.  Echo was the only company to search and find all of the contraband materials.  Then a relay race uphill.....

Next they had to tread water for 15 minutes in full ODU (they tried out the trick they'd learned of making their pants into life vests - and IT WORKED!!). Then they had to swim 10 laps.

Not sure if this is exactly the order in which things happened, but they all managed to help each other out and complete all that was required!  Mark sounded so proud of himself and everyone in Echo Company!  What a day!!!!!

San Diego/Eagle visit

Right now, as I am writing this entry, Mark is asleep on the couch in our hotel room.  Caleigh and Roxanne, our two dogs, are curled up with him. He was fortunate it enough to have had liberty both yesterday and today, so I am really glad I made the trip to see him.  He bought a pair of shorts and a tee so he could hang w/the dogs (no dog hair allowed on that uniform!).  We hung out in the hotel, went out for an awesome seafood dinner, walked the gas lamp district (clean version of Greenwich village) and then hung out some more at the hotel before I took him back to the ship at 11pm.  I went back this morning at 8 to get him and we're going to visit Seaworld this afternoon.

Mark had an awesome adventure aboard the tall ship Eagle.  His favorite event was climbing the ropes to the top.  He took several photos and a short video from this "bird's eye" vantage point and they made me dizzy just to look at them!   They were lucky enough to watch the sun set one night from there.  Scary thing is they are not hooked in during their assent and they stand on a single rope as they climb.  I'm glad I didn't know that before hand!!!  Mark admitted there was one job he didn't like....washing dishes.  The food is really good and they get plenty of sleep despite the close quarters. He just loved the sailing, didn't get sea sick at all and wished they all had more time.  he has many stories and I should type as he is sharing because I just don't do them justice.

They head back to CT tomorrow morning aboard a C-130 again for one more week of Swab summer.  Mark is happy, healthy, grateful to everyone who has written or sent goodies, and looking forward to the school year.

Update since Mystic visit

I spoke with Mark on the phone last night and again this morning.  He and his company took an 8 hour plane ride along with two other companies (Delta and Foxtrot) aboard a C-130 military plane to Los Angeles.  He said it was loud, and they were lying in hammock style cargo nets! They have flown to CA for a one week excursion aboard the tall ship Eagle.  He's VERY excited about having the opportunity to serve as a crew member aboard this ship.  They are in port in LA until tomorrow when they set sail for San Diego.  They're scheduled to pull into port on the 8th, and I will be there to greet them! Last night a few of them (Mark included) had liberty and they went out to dinner.  Today they were heading to Long Beach, and he was hoping to see the new batman movie. He has a new appreciation for free time!

Mark told me that Echo Company has set the overall record for fastest morning routine: getting showered, shaved, dressed, dusted off and on the bulkhead in 5 minutes and 37 seconds!  He has received compliments about his overall apperance and neatness.  The company helps each other out; some shine shoes, some spit shine belt buckles and others iron.  Mark's forte is ironing :-) When we saw him at Mystic he was proud that no one from Echo Company had quit.  They had one woman who was discharged for medical reasons, but Echo was the only company that was still intact.

He had great news about his math placement tests.  He was able to test out of Calculus and will be a year ahead in math; taking multivariable Calculus and differential equations (no idea what any of that means!).

The ice hockey coach had a meeting and was psyched that 12 freshman had shown interest.  The coach told them he usually only had one or two kids each year.  There is at least one other goalie, but Mark said he will choose hockey if he isn't able to swing both rowing and hockey.  The hockey season begins in late fall.

The SWABS were issued their M-1 drill rifles.  Mark's rifle was used in WWII and there is a serial number that he can research to find out who used it back then.

He had his sailing qualification before heading for California.  Mark qual'd in a 420 which his step-aunt Jill used to race!

I will have more to report after my visit on Friday.

Our visit at Mystic

It was so great to see Mark yesterday.  He's in excellent spirits and looks great!  He had some funny stories to share which I will write about in detail in another entry.  We got to spend about an hour and a half with him in the morning at Mystic Seaport.  I cant tell you a thing about the museum because we spent our time there just looking at Mark and listening to him! There was a parade and ceremony where the class of 2012 was presented with their "class flag." then the swabs returned to the academy for inspection. Lucky for us he was one of the first ones out and we had an extra hour to spend with him!!  We took him to lunch at Applebee's (he had steak and shrimp) he was delighted just to be out, didn't care what we did really.  He relaxed, enjoyed a good meal, and made a list of things to buy cotton balls (for polishing his belt buckle) sudefed for the colds they are all getting, and Febreeze for his locker :-)  From there we wandered around Best Buy.  That's when he made his phone calls (standing still in a corner of the store - they aren't allowed to walk and talk on their phones).  Then to Border's Cafe.  It was tough to take him back, but he was fine with it.  I will be seeing him next week in San Diego.  They fly out on Sunday for their week long trek aboard the tall ship Eagle - which he is very pumped up about. More later......

Details from July 16 letter

Mark is glad to hear that we will see  him on Saturday.  He says he has so many stories to share; too much to write down in his letters.  The weeks are starting to go by faster and everyone in Echo Company (his group) is getting close.  The food is actually pretty good.  They get about an hour each night to themselves before taps.  He is sleeping well; lights out at 10:15pm and wake up call at 5:30am!  Heat isn't that bad (although some kids from cooler climates are trying to adjust to the humidity level.)  They make sure to drink plenty of water. He can't wait to see us (and his cell phone). :-)

Details from a July 11 letter

Mark's latest letter, dated July 11 was very upbeat.  He has changed rooms and has a new room mate (didn't say who it was!) described both as "great guys".  His placement testing for math went well which gave him a boost.  Got to go sailing which he said was "AWESOME".  He mentioned that someone in Echo Company was sent a watermelon (yes, a watermelon!) which he got to enjoy.  Personally I wouldn't recommend such a delivery; the mail is backed up and it takes several days sometimes to reach him.  He's counting down the days to the Mystic Seaport Flag Ceremony, and his trip aboard Eagle in early August.  (I have included a link on this website which will take you to the tracking website, it's fun.)

An Eagle-eye view
U.S. Coast Guard tall ship makes port for event

BY ANNIE IERARDI (CONTACT)
The Post and Courier
Friday, June 26, 2009

The Eagle has landed.

The U.S. Coast Guard tall ship made its grand entrance Thursday just in time for Charleston Harbor Fest 2009. The former Nazi vessel coasted in with a crew of more than 200 Coast Guard Academy cadets dressed from head to toe in navy blue uniforms.

Homeported in New London, Conn., the Eagle is a training vessel for cadets and officer candidates. It is one of 18 tall ships entering Charleston Harbor for four days of tours, sailing and dockside activities. They are participating the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge, a series of trans-Atlantic regattas starting in Vigo, Spain, and ending in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Training officers are required to spend varying amounts of time on the ship where they learn the basics of Sailing 101. During summer training, the crew swaps out every five weeks, allowing as many cadets as possible to receive training.

The Eagle is no dinghy. The modern-day vessel resembles an old-fashioned pirate ship. The tall ship has three masts and is nearly 300 feet long.

Before its days under the command of clean-cut cadets, the ship was built for the German navy in 1936. The Horst Wessel, as it originally was named, was used to train World War II U-boat operators. The United States claimed it as a war reparation gift at the end of the war.

Onboard the Eagle, boa-constrictor-thick ropes shoot off in every direction. To the average onlooker, the complicated web of rigging looks impossible to operate. But not for the cadets. They are responsible for manning nearly five miles of ropes, and like the sailors of yore, they also can be seen clambering up the sails or perched at the top of the masts.

During regular task rotations, cadets learn every element of operating a tall ship. While some are manning the sails, others are cooking, cleaning, painting or navigating like the sailors of old.

Training onboard is a vacation away from the academy where cadets can toss aside their text books and actually 'get to see the real part of the Coast Guard,' sophomore Orlando Morel said. He, along with the other rookies that caught the ship in Bermuda, will spend the next six weeks of their summer learning the ins and outs of tall ship sailing.

Onboard the Eagle, education and safety are the main focus. The Coast Guard claims that the Eagle has possibly the strictest safety protocol of any ship in the world. It is important to operate with extreme caution, said Lt. Commander Matt J. Moorlag, since the majority of cadets onboard have minimal to no sailing experience. And instead of pen and paper tests, the challenge is a race on the open sea.

We were playing the wind and the currents, but it's the same game sailors played 100 years ago,' Captain J. Christopher Sinnett said.

During the regatta from Bermuda to Charleston, the first-time sailors barely had a chance to get their feet wet because the leg was cut short. Like many of the tall ships in the third leg, the Eagle was forced to retire. More than 100 miles out from the finish, the wind died and the crew was force to dropped sail and motor to the ending buoy outside of Charleston Harbor.

The ship arrived safely Wednesday evening and anchored off shore for the night. Thursday morning, the Maria Barge, a Coast Guard barge from Jacksonville, Fla., transported a group of patrons out to join the crew on the ship's trek to the harbor.

But winning isn't everything.

Academy senior Matt Malacaria hopes to sail past the competition on the next leg from Charleston to Boston. He said that the Romanian tall ship Mircea is probably the Eagle's biggest competitor.

With the new crew under way, 'This next phase should be pretty smooth. We've got a good base now,' senior cadet Rachel Dooglas said.

If all else fails, the ship will continue to achieve its main goal, 'teaching the future of the Coast Guard,' Sinnett said.

The Eagle will get a new captain Saturday. After serving a standard three-year tour on the ship, Sinnet will turn the Eagle over to Eric Jones, who is serving as the deputy chief of the Office of Congressional Affairs at the Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C.

During Charleston Harbor Fest 2009, the Eagle and more than a dozen additional ships will be on display or open to the public for tours. The festival begins today and will run through Monday.

The Eagle will not be available to the public until after 3 p.m. Saturday following the change of command activities. The ship is docked at Union Pier Passenger Terminal.

To catch a glimpse of the Eagle in action, don't miss the Parade of Sail, Monday 4 to 6 p.m., when all the tall ships will exit the harbor and set for Boston.
