Gaza: What's Next? A Teach-in on the Humanitarian Crisis
On Feb. 5, 2009, a two-hour teach-in on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was held at the University of Washington. (The session came after a Jan. 8, 2009 student protest at UW over the war in Gaza).
The event, Gaza: What's Next?, was spearheaded and organized by UW student Amineh Ayyad and featured three speakers and an hour of Q&A. The teach-in was sponsored by Health Alliance International, UW Students for Justice in Palestine, the UW School of Social Work, and several co-sponsors.
Goals of the Teach-in:
• Expand understanding of the humanitarian disaster in Gaza
• Beat back cynicism, hopelessness & despair
• Create humanitarian support for people of Gaza
• Promote justice in the Middle East for Palestine & Israel
• Generate ideas for actions citizens can take towards justice
for Palestine & Israel
Speakers:
Link to audio from all speakers (Steve Niva, Dr. Kanter, Aaron Katz, Q&A)
Steve Niva, professor of international politics and international studies, Evergreen State College; expert on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.
Dr. Evan Kanter, assistant professor, UW School of Medicine/Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; psychiatrist, Veteran's Administration Puget Sound; President, Physicians for Social Responsibility; expert on mental health effects of war.
Aaron Katz, senior lecturer on health policy, Health Services, UW School of Public Health; Director, Packard Gates Population Leadership Program; Jewish-American perspective on our responsibilities as U.S. citizens.
Facilitators:
Amy Hagopian, assistant professor, Health Services, UW School of Public Health; senior health workforce policy advisor, Health Alliance International.
Peter House, director of Regional and Rural Education, Research & Support, School of Medicine; associate AHEC director & director of Programs for Healthy Communities, University of Washington.
A disclaimer: We want to recognize that this event is put together by the Students for Justice in Palestine, and they have recruited speakers who are more sympathetic to the plague of the Palestinians. Maybe future events can be more focused on the Israeli struggles.
