Shawl Ministry
The Next Level

Founders of the Prayer Shawl Ministry

In 1997, we graduated from the Women's Leadership Institute (WLI) at The Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut. As a result of our experience in the WLI, a program of applied feminist spirituality under the direction of Professor Miriam Therese Winter, MMS, we gave birth to the Prayer Shawl Ministry in 1998.

Compassion and the love of knitting/crocheting have been combined into a prayerful ministry and spiritual practice which reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace, as well as in celebration and joy. Many blessings are prayed into every shawl.

Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, Peace Shawls, or Mantles, etc., the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient. The intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawl is sent on its way. Some recipients have continued the kindness by making a shawl and passing it onto someone in need. Thus, the blessing ripples from person-to-person, with both the giver and receiver feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, mothering God!

“Shawls … made for centuries universal and embracing symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally Loving, God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify. Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to fly above their troubles  …”

HOW GOD ALLOWED ME TO START THIS MINISTRY

I just wanted to let everyone know how God allowed me start this ministry at my church. The most wonderful church in Voice to the Nations. I have always had a passion for crocheting and had prayed many times for the Lord to help me to use my talent for Him. My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2008 and I took a medical leave from work for the month of October. During that time, we were in and out of doctors offices and hospitals and I would take my crocheting with me and it would help me to some what relax during this time. Two weeks after my mom's diagnosis, my dad had to have an emergency 4-bypass heart surgery in . My crocheting became my constant friend. Dad did beautiful from the surgery, Praise the Lord. While mom was going through her chemo treatments I made her some hats after she lost her hair and then the Lord impressed upon me to make some for the other chemo patients which I did. One day while searching on the internet I came across a website called Shawl Ministry and began reading about it. I couldn't get this website out of my mind and started praying about it. The first shawl that I made was for our Intercessory Prayer Leader, I thought it would be neat for her to use during her prayer time. Then I made mom one. In December a dear friend of mine's mother became ill and I started making her a shawl. My friend felt like it would be a comfort to her mom so I quickly finished the shawl and got it to her. At that time, I really started focusing on sick and hurting people and what these shawls mean to them. I continued to pray and ask the Lord to keep it in my spirit if this was a ministry that I could start. I began talking to a couple of ladies at church who also crocheted and they became excited about the prospect of having a shawl ministry at our church. After talking with the pastors at church, I was given the okay to start it. On April 16th we had our first meeting and as of this date we have given 26 prayer shawls to sick and hurting people. The testimonies continue to come in about how people know that God is with them no matter what they are going through. He is also providing the donations to purchase the yarn needed to crochet the shawls. God is so good and He is using this ministry for His Kingdom. He gets all the Praise. Psalm 90:17

Symbolism of Granny Square

Granny Square
Granny Square

The Lord showed Ms. Cherry an amazing symbol while she was crocheting one of the squares for this blanket.  This is what He showed her: The circle in the center is God, the 3 stitches in the corner represent the Trinity (the Father, Son & Holy Spirit), there is one chain stitch in between each stitch that represents all of us being joined together and the V stitch represent our Victory in Jesus. God is doing a great work through all of us.

Updates

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY !!!

Well praise the Lord for this Ministry. It's been a year since we started and we are still going strong. We have given out well over 200 shawls in the last year and it has been truly amazing. God has done so much during this time. We have so much fun crocheting and fellowshipping with each other. And when it's time to pray God's anointing is so powerful. I would just like to give a shout to my faithful few who have stuck through this with me. First of all I just want to thank the Lord for allowing me to use my talent for His Kingdom and start this ministry. Ms. Susie: there's no way I could have done this by myself with all that I've gone through in the last year and I just want to say "Thank You and I love you", Lindsey: I have seen you grow so much this year not only in this ministry but in your walk with the Lord as well, I love you. Ms. Cherry: You amaze me with all you make and how you can make something with the least little bit of yarn, thank you for your dedication, I love you. And Ms. Catherine, you are an inspiration with going through cancer and treatments and still crocheting, I love you.

Thanks to EVERYONE who loves to crochet and is a part of this ministry. I'm still continuing my journey from 'Grief to Grace".

In Loving Memory of my mom: Laquita Crane.  Renee

Praise

As of today, we have given 50 shawls to sick and hurting people. God is doing an amazing work through us. He gets all the Praise.

Donation

Well God has blessed us with yet another donation. I have bought more yarn for the ladies to make the shawls. We give God all the glory for this ministry.

Fun ! Fun ! Fun !

We've had another meeting and it was so much fun. Lots of ladies wanting to learn how to crochet the shawls. We have all ages learning. The anointing was so powerful as we began to pray over the shawls and discuss who would receive them. To date we've given out 13 shawls. God is truly leading the way.

GOD AMAZES AGAIN

Well once again I can say that God has truly amazed me. I was given a donation today enough to make 6 or 7 shawls. I know that we are truly doing His work.

When you begin to weave, God will send the thread

God is so amazing. We prayed that God would send us yarn and I put it on freecycle that we needed yarn for the ministry. I got an email today from a lady that had a bag of yarn for me. And the cool part about it is that I was going to make a man's lap blanket from a particular color and guess what was in the bag, well you guessed it, those exact colors. So I'll be making that and will bring some of the yarn to help our beginners learn to crochet. God gets all the praise for this yarn. Renee

Prayer Shawl Meeting 3/26/09

We had our first meeting with 7 ladies and youth in attendance. We discussed business as well as praying over 9 shawls that will be given to recipients in need. I'm so excited that God has allowed myself and everyone else to use their talents for the Kingdom.

WELCOME

Welcome to our site! We are from Voice to the Nations in Griffin, GA. This prayer shawl ministry is a special way to reach out with love and care to those who are hurting, to comfort those in need of healing, to console those who are grieving and to bring hope to those in despair. These shawls are either crocheted or knitted with love and combined into a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need. Many blessings are knitted into every shawl. The crafter begins each shawl with prayers for the recipient and continues praying throughout the creation of the shawl. When the shawl is completed, the ministry will have corporate prayer over the shawl before sending it to the recipient. We hope you enjoy looking at what we do for the Kingdom.  See our favorites web sites below.

TESTIMONIALS

Tribute to my Mom by Renee Parker - August 6, 2009

Wow! Is all I can say about our meeting tonight. God's presence was so amazing. So many prayer request going up to the Throne. And oh the hands that work so hard on the prayer shawls. It's such a joy to see so many people enjoying the work of their hands. I can only thank God for allowing me the opportunity to start this amazing ministry all because my mother got cancer and God allowed me to use the gift of crocheting to help so many people. My mother has now passed away and is with her Heavenly Father and not suffering anymore.  I miss my mother so much but I will continue to make prayer shawls in memory of her.

Another Praise Report

I just want to say that around April my brother in law and his wife separated and he was given a prayer shawl for healing of his mind, spirit and marriage and God has done all three. Thank you ladies! Because of your love and dedication a family has received healing and they are now allowing God to be the center of their marriage and their children are now able to see the benefit of parents that love God.

Thank You

I can not thank you enough for the shawl. I want to tell you what it has meant to me.  I have been through test after test to try to determine why my feet and ankles were so swollen and painful to walk on. At times I could barely make it from the chair to the restroom without crying. I constantly cried out to my Lord and Savior to deliver me from the pain. I always believed he would in his time. I instantly wrapped my feet with the shawl. I am one that at bedtime, my feet have to be cool, well, now they are wrapped with the shawl, and I constantly think of the prayers and the prayerful hands that went into the making of the shawl for people like me. They have determine through bloodwork that I have a type of auto immune disease and it will take time and several meds to heal. In the meantime, I had a long talk and prayerful time with my Jesus and I decided that I wasn't going to sit in a chair and wait to get well, you see, he has brought me through too many dark times in my life. With his help, and lot's of positive attitude and determination, and the prayers of wonderful fellow Christians like you I will kick this too. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. You have made my healing process so much easier and comforted me each and everyday when I needed a hug or someone there for me when I felt down.

Loss of Loved One

I know for me when Mama was dying with cancer the prayer shawl always helped me remember that God was in control each time I looked at it, and I honestly felt like that with the shawl wrapped around her that she was covered in prayer every minute of the day. So never doubt the power and peace that the shawl brings to the person that is sick and the family that is watching their loved one struggle with the sickness. It is a symbol of faith and a comfort to all.

Battling Cancer

Thank you so much for the shawl. I can't tell you how much it meant to me, that a total stranger would care so deeply. The one thing that sustains me is my faith. Without that the knowledge that He walks with me and lifts me up every day, I couldn't face each day. I've faced this my whole life, my father's family are prone to cancer, I lost him to lung cancer in 1996. When I heard the news that I also had it, I turned to God and ask for the strength to go on. The first week was for tears, after that I went into battle mode. With God and my Savior Jesus by my side I have an unlimited will and belief in a cure. So again I want to say Thank You.

Connected

I have been looking for awhile on how I could get connected... and this goes perfect with my old soul... I believe that the mature christians I will be with will also help me grow:)))

Thank you for blessing me with a prayer shawl this morning, it's through things like this that you hear God's voice. Sometimes in life when you are dealing with health issues it is easy to feel forgotten, my shawl was a little reminder that my God has not forgotten me. Thank you for being obedient and allowing Him to use you. I can't wait to learn to make one , to pass on to someone else. Thank you for all the love behind this ministry!
