August Hike - Briones Regional Preserve - Hike and BBQ

WM about to hit the trail once again

Along the Alhambra Creek trail
The trail made a very gradual ascent at first. It was a delightfully pleasant day.

Spenger Trail?
At some point we branched off, as I recall, and the trail steepened. Jon and Mac turned back, although I give him credit for doing much of the uphill (I would have wimped out).

It's a bird. No, it's a plane.
Michael and Ed; at least they're pointing in generally the same direction...

View to the NE
Benicia Bridge and the delta beyond.

Mt. Diablo
Jay and Ed, and some bandita who was following us.

Lagoons
You can see another of the lagoons, with Mt. Diablo looming in the background.

Heading downhill
Downhill (mostly) from here. Steep at the beginning. This was the hardest on my bum ankle/leg.

Berkeley Hills? to the west
That's my theory; need to check the map to see for sure. There was still thick fog over the bay.

Another view to the NE

The man
This is what Michael didn't see. Hard to believe this has survived thousands of years without somebody painting an advertisement on it or something.

Recuperating
Drinks and food, courtesy of Jon and P.K. Thanks to them for generously hosting our gang.

A butterfly
He wouldn't pose for me; there are better butterfly pictures later on.

Some flowers
Purple ones; dunno what they're called

Trees
Some fallen, some standing

"N" marks the spot
Anybody else get that letter here?

Another butterfly
Not sure; there's a lot that look alike, see http://butterfly.ucdavis.edu/butterfly/common Common name: Great Basin Fritillary Latin name: Speyeria egleis

Another bridge
This is at the bottom of the canyon before climbing the last ridge before dropping down to the falls (or that's how I remember it).

Golden Falls

Golden Falls

Golden Falls with fern

below Golden Falls

Silver Falls
Harder to get a good picture of these. Definitely more silver than Golden Falls was.

Silver Falls
"4" marks the spot

Fern
The creek below Silver Falls was really nice.

Tall trees

Heuchera
I think this is of the genus Heuchera. Looks like this one: http://www.laspilitas.com/nature-of-california/plants/heuchera-merriamii

Berry Creek Falls
...of legend; pretty impressive.

We thought that was the Princeton harbor

butterfly study #1
Butterflies seemed to be "hatching" as there were a good number about and they sometimes even stopped to stretch their wings so I could get a picture (well, at least once)

Flower #2
I want to say this is Queen Anne's Lace but I'm not sure; same genus, probably

Ocean comes into view
Some steeper and more exposed switchbacks took us up to the top of the ridge for fine views to the Pacific

Lunch spot
We stopped along the ridge top for lunch before descending

Scary sign
The only thing we actually encountered was the poison oak (and lots of it)

View to the east
I went up ahead a bit to get to the top and a view to the east from Skyline; maybe those are east bay hills on the horizon?

Douglas iris
lorem-ipsum douglasii (or something like that)

Harkins Ridge Trail
Not as nice on this side of the canyon; I'm not sure what kind of tree was flowering here

Half Moon Bay
Nice view up the coast

Taking a break
This was just before dropping back down into Whittemore Gulch.

Whittemore Gulch Trail
View across the gulch to much of the trail we took up.

Berries
Not sure what these were but probably not good to eat.

Green logs
I saw somebody else uploaded a picture of this scene, also. Now what letter is that?

Relaxing before we set off, waiting for Christina, Christobal, and Camilla to arrive

March Hike: Uvas Canyon Waterfalls

Granuja Falls
Granuja seems to mean "urchin," "rascal,", or "bandit" (based on an online lookup). Let's call it "Bandit Falls."

Granjua Falls Bridge

Miner's Lettuce
Seen along the trail; looked good enough to eat!

Black Rock Falls
"Black Rock" is English for "rock negro."

Madrones...
...along the Contour Trail which crosses the ridge between the waterfall loop canyon and Alec Canyon, off of which lies the Triple Falls.

Triple Falls
I'm not sure you can see all 3 levels here. Or the top was kind of flat up at the top and hard to see. Or maybe its just misnamed.

Feb 2010 - Sweeney Ridge

WMers at start
Pardon my backside. I set my camera on a gate post and despite instructions to the contrary, we lined up waaaaaaay down the trail and I lacked about 2 more seconds getting there before the 10 seconds were up.
Dreary weather at the beginning, but we pressed on.

Crossing the line
Crossing over to the foggy side

San Bruno Mtn
...and beautiful South SF (the Industrial City, or so I hear).

Near the top of the ridge
Where I caught up with everybody else (everybody else waited). If we just started the hikes with a half-hour downhill stretch, instead.
It rained pretty good for a stretch leading up to this point.

Taking a break from the wet start
San Andrea Reservoir

Michael mediates Stacey and Jay's discussion
On the way up to Sweeney Ridge

Really at the top of the ridge
Now we're getting our money's worth, as the Pacific (and some blue skies!) come into view.

Barbara, Steve, and Michael
Still kind of blustery.

Discovery Point
(I think that's what they called this). A nice monument, here...

...and another one there. This was a tribute to the guy who put up the first one, I think. Seems kind of odd, that.

The end of the trail
Or should I say, the end that us peons are permitted to hike. Beyond here is SFWater.org property.
No trespassing? But its not trespassing if its your own property, right?
If you look closely, I think you can see the barbed wire reflecting on the signboard.

Pacifica
The weather is nicer over there. Why didn't we hike there?

SFO

ze Plane!

Michael and Stacey
With SFO in the background.

Bay view
Bill, Raleigh, Jay, Miguel and Stacey overlooking the same spot that Gaspar de Portola and his European friends discovered back in 1769...the bay probably looked a little different back then.

Cloud View
Bill, Raleigh, Jay, Miguel and Stacey overlooking SFO airport, the clouds and the limited views of the East Bay

Another Bay view
Miguel and Stacey looking out towards Candlestick Point

Barbara
She looks cold and/or wet. It really wasn't that bad (if we kept moving).

Rocks off coast in Pacifica
I think that apartment building must have fallen in, as I can't see it on the edge of the cliff...

Close up of Rocks

San Francisco
We went north a quarter mile or so to the Nike missile site. From here you could get a view of more SF.

Close-up of SF
Notice the Golden Gate Bridge towards the left.

Closer-up of SF
I probably should have deleted this one or the previous one.

Bunker
A post-apocalyptic looking building. Ironically, the thing was built to be expressly pre-apocalyptic (that is, as an apocalypse preventative, perhaps).
At least it provided some good jobs back in the booming Cold War years.

WMers and San Bruno Mountain
Scott, Steve, Barbara, Jay, Michael, and Anne (and Raleigh's butt), L to R

Another group shot
Raleigh thought something smelled interesting, I guess.

Sunset District?
Just 10 short blocks from Scott's place, or so he says.

Coast
North of Pacifica

San Andreas Reservoir
Stacey on the road down.

View to the south
We made it down safely, loaded up the cars, and went to (some restaurant?) in San Bruno for a late lunch. I forgot to take pictures (darn it; bonus points if somebody can add one from the restaurant).
Prizes went to Michael (just because he begged for one), Diane (being her first WM hike; she received a Led Zeppelin II CD!), and Anne (because she is such a nag about using the web site).
A great turnout! Thanks to everybody for coming out. See you next month in Uvas Canyon.

Sweeney Ridge Mudslide
Scott, Anne and Sarah ignore the land collapsing around them

Heading for the barn
Stacey leads the way down with Bill, Sarah, Anne and Scott close behind

Fissures?
Anne points to damage left in road that Bill and Scott may have caused? ;-)

Following the yellow line
Heading for the parking lot

San Andreas Reservoir
Clouds hang over the San Andreas Reservoir

SteepandCheap
Bill was showing Stacey how to shop while hiking - he may actually be cancelling his rain gear order.

Santa Teresa County Park - Post-Thanksgiving hike 2009

WMers at the start...
...without sense to come in out of the rain, apparently.

Kind of gloomy out

Brightening up some...
...up near the top of Coyote Peak.

Note the shadows
Anne and Scott catching some rays; Steve and Stacy further back.

Jay and Michael
Ahead of the pack.

Stacy takes a call
or checking the GPS to make sure we're not lost.

Jay and Michael
Still ahead; I think we're gaining on them.

Climbing back up the hill
on the return.

,,,(or close enough), thanks to Steve and Stacy. Note how we caught up to Jay and Michael when it counts!

2009-11-08 @ Garin Park

Leaving the barn
WMers itching to get started. L to R, F to B: Gina, Michael, Bill, Jay, Donna, Barbara, and Anne. Raleigh and Maggie are the furry (furrier) ones.

Leaving the barn in our dust
We took off up the High Ridge Loop Trail. It heads up to the top of the ridge on a nice steady grade, if perhaps a bit too steep for some of us, first thing in the morning, after a long non-hiking spell.

Gina and Barbara (and Maggie)
On the uphill stretch at the beginning of the hike.

Along the top of the ridge
Views open up to across the bay as soon as you climb just a little ways up. It was a beautiful, clear day.

Closer up...
...that's Jay, Gina (and Maggie), Anne, and Barbara.

Checking the map
There are a few turnoffs to the right (back down the hill); those were for painty-waists (but useful if you want to shorten the hike). We pushed on to Gossip Rock.

Gossipers
I think we're discussing the just passed Healt Care (non) Reform Act of 2009. Donna is begging us to change the topic :-).

City views
You could see the San Francisco skyline pretty clearly this day.

More SF skyline

A cheerful bunch
Looks like we're still in good spirits. This is at the half-way point or so (although I think it was shorter on the return). The return was down the Pioneer and Dry Creek Trails. This trail went through nice shade with lots of oaks and bay trees. That'd be the way to go up on a hot summer day, I think.

Looking back...
...the parking lot is that way.

Jordan Pond
We arrived here shortly before reaching the parking lot. Way more people here than we saw out on the trails. We had a beer at a picnic table across from the barn then headed to
Tacos Uruapan for some decent Mexican food. The fish taco was good; I'd eat there again.
Alamere Falls - February

Robin, Bill, Pam, Michael, Alberto, and Jay
I think we're waiting at the turnoff to Alamere Falls. Picture courtesy of Steve.
Notice in all 4 pictures I make an appearance. I'm including all the ones he sent just because it's nice to have a different perspective.

Puddle crossing
A good jump probably would have cleared this but everybody tried to walk across the skinny, slippery sticks.

Alamere Falls
This is a good shot showing the Falls from the beach. You can see the little ravine leading up to the top of the cliff were we stopped to eat lunch. Most WMers are gathered there (or climbing their way up).

Bill and Robin at top of descent to falls
Perhaps not quite worthy of the scary "Hazardous conditions" warning on the trail-side sign. But not a walk in the park, either.

Barbara
She got to wear that cool hat!

Jay
Another cool hat. Lots of hats on this sunny day. We caught a break between the rainy days.

At the trailhead
More hats; some warm ones. It was pretty cool early in the morning.

Donna and Dan
Hey. Where are your hats?

Farallones in the distance
There was some skepticism voiced about whether these were indeed the Farallones. That's them. Nothing else out there and I found other people's pictures.
As to distance: compare to the picture of Pt. Reyes lighthouse. I estimate that to be 15mi distant and these islands 20-25 miles.

Steve at trailhead
Notice the clear blue sky. There's some nice forest in places. I think the Bolinas Ridge trail which runs along the ridge above the coast would make a fine hike someday.

Crowds on the trail
...and that's just the W.A.I.S.T. Managers.

View south from beginning of the hike
Pretty good surf; leftover waves from the recent storms?

Along the Coast Trail

Heading uphill
After a mile and a half or so, the trail heads inland and uphill a bit (but not too bad).

Pelican Lake
Totally inaccessible, apparently. Unless you want to risk major poison oak exposure. Maybe there's a way to it from the beach or something. Seems like a waste of a beautiful lake.

Point Reyes seascape
You can see the end of the point on the horizon at left.

Pt. Reyes Lighthouse
Zoomed in (16.9x) you can see the lighthouse (I couldn't make it out with the naked eye).

Descending to Alamere Falls

"Upper" Alamere Falls
The first (larger) of two falls before the final cascade to the beach.

Alamere Creek
I think that's the name of the creek. I'm standing at the top of the second, smaller cascade.

Pam and Donna climbing down to the falls
The trail is pretty steep and rutted here. I remember it being worse last time (2 years ago). It was more gravelly then. The recent rains (the day before) kind of washed it off this time, I think.

Michael
Already eating by the time I got to the top of the cliff above the beach.

View north
Classic view along the coast to the north. I wish I had a nickel for everytime somebody has taken this picture. Heck, I wish I had a nickel for every time
I've taken this picture.

More view to the north
Sorry; it's a nice picture and I couldn't choose between this and the previous one.

One more...
...this one showing the whole Pt. Reyes peninsula. My new camera is 28mm at its widest and does a much better job with shots like this. I don't think I could get the whole thing in one shot with my old camera.

Lunch atop the falls
Steve, Stacey, Alberto, Michael, and Sarah enjoying lunch. And the views.

Steve and Stacey
A nice romantic spot for lunch.

Edge of the falls
...in B&W. The lighting gets kind of washed out looking into the sun so I just changed to B&W for effect.

Ken, Jay, and Michael on the beach
After lunch many of us scrambled down to the beach to admire the falls. I had to do it twice because I forgot my camera.

Beach at base of falls
Looks deserted, but there were more people down here than up top.

Waves

Falls
Michael estimated 40ft across and 40ft in height, or something like that. Pretty impressive.

Obligatory Seagull picture
I got a better one last time (go look at that album to see it). The one last time made the AOL Pictures (may it rest in peace) welcome page.

Rocks
I stepped out to take some pictures and all I could think of was those stories about rogue waves that sweep people away. One got Steve (didn't sweep him away, but got his feet wet).

Ken, Steve, Michael, and Jay
Oh, with the falls in the background. You can see the people at the top of the falls.

Falls from a distance
I went a short ways down the beach looking for another way back up. You can see the tall peaks/cliffs along the beach here. I think the next gap leads up to Pelican Lake; you can see the peak in the picture earlier, probably.

Lonely stretch of beach

Pt. Reyes Coast
Same exact picture (more or less) as from the last time I was here.

Now and Then
This year on the left, two years ago on the right. Both are full-resolution 300x400 crops. I was curious if my new camera (Panasonic Lumix TZ5) compared to my old one (Canon Powershot S410). Hard to tell, since the slight haze of two years ago completely overwhelms any difference in the cameras.
The new camera's flexibility 28-440mm zoom range make up for any shortcomings in lens sharpness. That zoomed-in picture of the lighthouse on Pt. Reyes is way better than any lens at only 3x zoom (or so it seems to me).

Top of upper falls
Another comparison; note that there's maybe slightly more water this year (on left). I had to crop 600x800 and compress to 300x400 to get approximately the same image dimensions so that might slightly alter the image. Not much difference, so far as I can see.

Heading back
Not sure what's on the horizon there (at center). Montara Mountain, I believe.

Low tide
On the way to the trailhead, Bolinas Bay was at high tide.

WMers
Only took one take to get this shot of everybody smiling. Sarah's is a little sardonic but everybody seems to have genuinely enjoyed the hike.
Bill's SEKI Album

Big tree numero uno
The first tree we encountered, just steps from the car near the entrance gate. I snapped a picture, not knowing if we'd see any more...

WM Arrives at the Big Trees
(l to r) Bill, Scott, Michael, Anne, Alberto, and Sarah

Big Stump Trail
The trails, restrooms, etc. were closed at the entrance area (not sure why) and there were no brochures. I snapped a picture of the trail map (and we actually referred to it along the way!).

Some tree on the Big Stump Trail
I should look at the map in the preceding picture and figure out what tree this is. It might be the same one in the opening picture.

One of the Big Stumps
...for which this trail was named. Logged in the late 1800s, I think.

On the trail
It was pretty hot (over 100 in Fresno, probably), but not too bad up here. Especially pleasant along the shady trails. The weather was ideal the whole time we were there.

Burned Monarch
(I think). Definitely a burned out tree.

"Look at that big %#$%^#$ tree!"
This is the splintered giant (or some similarly catchy name). Kind of cook how the trees splinter when fallen. They even let you climb on this one. We decided they'd shoot you for doing that in Yosemite. SEKI is much more laid back.

Resting at the splintered giant
Man; we look pretty relaxed, and we just got here.

Chicago Tree
Cut for the World's Fair there, as I recall.

Survivor Tree
This one was reprieved somehow or other. It is cut partway through (you can see the notch to the right). It took two weeks to cut these guys down and the money ran out (or winter arrived) before this one fell.

Parking lot at General Grant Tree
After lunch (not sure why I don't have pictures of lunch).

General Grant Tree
The largest tree in this part of the park (something likek the 3rd biggest one; or something like that).

Scott in front of a big tree
Maybe the General Grant. But definitely Scott.

Alberto and Sarah

Another big tree

YABT (yet another big tree)

Assume the position...
...a lot of this going on all weekend.

General Grant Tree
...or most of it, at least.

Anne and Michael
...at the GGT (you can see part of the sign); the subtitle says "The Nation's Christmas Tree."

WM at the GGT
Amazing we had the place pretty much to ourselves.

mini meadow
and a group of smallish sequoias. I joked about my backyard was going to look just like this someday.

Bill's new backyard
See!

Panorama Point
We left the Grant Grove and drove up the nearby road to the "Panorama Point." From here there were good views towards King's Canyon (to the left) and Sequoia (to the right). The High Sierra is visible from here; generally you have to climb something to see beyond the lesser ranges in the foreground.

Kings Canyon view

Great Western Divide
...on the horizon, I believe.

Close up of Kings Canyon

The High Sierra
They had a map with the mountains labelled (I should ahve snapped a picture). Someday maybe I'll try to identify some of the peaks.

Mt. Brewer
I think that's the one (tall, pointy peak at center).

Little Baldy Trail
Alberto, Anne, and I decided to climb nearby Little Baldy Friday evening.

Little Baldy benchmark

Anne on Little Baldy
This might not be all the way at the top, though.

Bill on Little Baldy
...at or near the top. Nice picture, Anne!

Alberto on Little Baldy
At the actual summit this time. He's looking at Anne, who is taking a picture with his camera. You can see her shadow there.

View from Little Baldy
Close up of high peaks; not sure which direction this is, exactly.

Deer on Little Baldy Trail
We saw a few deer on the way down. A nice buck just a few feet from the trail (didn't get a picture of him, though). The flash lights up their eyes this spooky green color. I'll have to try Photoshop and see if it can do "green eye removal." I've heard that Shutterfly software can do that (because somebody wanted picture of there dog fixed up).

Sunset from Little Baldy Trail
I think that's maybe "Big Baldy" on the right.

Campsite
Back at camp (or maybe the next morning).

Meadow at campground
There was a nice meadow and a little creek across the road from our campsite.

Lakes Trail (to Heather Lake)
On Saturday we hiked the Lakes Trail to Heather Lake.

Plotting our course
Checking the map; and we haven't even started yet.

Rest stop along the Lakes Trail
Scott, Sarah, Anne (and me) resting at the point the Lakes trail heads uphill towards the Watchtower.

Sarah and Anne
We kind of fell behind Michael and Alberto at this point. And Scott was further back.

Nearing the Watchtower
Sarah climbing the last steep stretch before arriving at the Watchtower.

Alberto at the Watchtower
We caught up with him and Michael here. They had been watching people scrambling up to the top. Anne, surprisingly, started up there immediately. I surveyed the routes and soon followed.

The Watchtower
This was our objective: the pile of rocks at center. One had to cross over to the relatively narrow knife-edged ridge ascending from the left.

Pantywaists
They decided to just watch.

Whoa!
Don't want to fall that-a-way.

Looking back
Here's I'm probably halfway up the ridge to the highpoint. You can barely make out Sarah standing across the way ont he canyon edge. Michael and Alberto were heading on to Heather Lake by this point, I believe.

Young Lady #1
One of Anne's climbing partners. They were from Santa Barbara, I think. At least one of them had "UCSB" on the bottom of her shorts (not that I noticed :-).

Young Lady #2
Anne had tagged along with them. Either Anne felt young and decided to try to keep up, or, they decided if she could make it, they certainly could.

Anne and friends atop the Watchtower

Bill climbing the Watchtower

Bill on the Watchtower
I made it! No summit picture of Anne (I was climbing when she was on top). Another good picture, Anne!

Cliff
Another view of the point where the trail passes along the cliff edge. There were a good number of people along this trail.

Scott and Sarah at the Watchtower
Scott caught up while Anne and I were scrambling to the top. We would leave him and Sarah as we headed towards Heather Lake.

The Watchtower
View from further up the canyon.

Lakes Trail
This portion of the trail was blasted out of the rock (so they say). Being so high and exposed, it offered great views up the canyon.

The Watchtower
Another good view; gives you some idea of how sheer the cliffs are below it.

Alberto at Heather Lk
We go to the lake and Alberto was showing off.

Michael at Heather Lk
Michael not so much so. One doesn't want to get the women hikers all worked up.

Heather Lake
Doesn't look all that inviting, actually. But I thought the angle of the log and reflection made a nice composition. It was a nice lake.

Heather Lake
That's Alberto still catching some rays.

Hot Italian Babes
A group from Italy arrived at the lake while we were there. There were a couple of guys, too, I think. Maybe Sarah took pictures of them.

Scott swimming in Heather Lake
Scott arrived after a half-hour or so. While not the fastest hiker; he was the best swimmer. He's waaaaay out in the middle of the lake.

The Watchtower
...coming into view on our return.

Map of the Lakes Trail
Zoom in (click "download" and open the picture somehow) to see detail. Alta Peak is up this trail, too. A more ambituous outing for another time (when I'm younger).

Back at camp

The Giant Forest
The next day (Sunday) we headed to the Giant Forest to see the biggest trees (and lots of 'em).

WM at the Sherman Tree Trail
Guillermo, Lena, and their daughter joined us the previous evening. So now we totaled 9 hikers. Guillermo is missing from this picture, for some reason.

Bear
There was some hollering and people running down the trail. Seems there was a bear. I snapped this photo (a little blurry). The bear refused to stop and pose for me.
First bear I've ever seen in the Sierra.

General Sherman Tree
Largest living thing (so they say). Impressive, regardless.

WM at the Gen. Sherman Tree
There's Guillermo.

Base of Gen. Sherman Tree
I'll try to stich together pictures to show the whole tree. Good thing I have that new camera with the wide-angle lens.

Gen. Sherman, meet W.A.I.S.T. Management

The GST
(in the background; notice all the people crowded around it).

GST (again)

Alberto, Anne, Bill, and Scott
Inside a hollowed out tree. I think this was near the parking lot at Giant Forest. Photo courtesy of Alberto

The Congress Trail
Next we hiked the Congress Trail. As we'll see, this trail passes by groups of trees shamelessly named after government bodies in an attempt to curry favor and garner protection for the parks. Sort of like the political contributions of their day, I suppose.

Along the Congress Trail
There were lots of nice, big trees here. These not named after anybody, at least that I can recall.

El Presidente
Old and gnarled, sort of John McCain-ish.

The Senate
Uppity "club" of trees; they think they're better than the lowly trees in the House, down below.

The House
Impressive grup of trees, very close together. Seems like maybe one would fall over and take down all the others.

McKinley Tree
Not sure why McKinley gets a really big tree named after him. Either in the right place at the right time (President when they named it), or, the wrong place at the wrong time (because he got assasinated).

Lunch spot
We stopped for lunch on the rocks just beyond the McKinley tree.

Two Pillars
These had some name like "Pillars of Hercules" or some such. I should know those names. I'm sure they carefully chose them to either honor somebody (or the trees).

Pillars of Hercules
Closer up.

Tunnel Tree on road to Crescent Meadow

W.M. at Crescent Meadow
After the Giant Forest we drove to Crescent Meadow and hiked a few miles along the meadows. On the drive in we went through the tunnel tree (through a fallen tree).

Crescent Meadow
Words can't do it justice...a beautiful place.

Tharp's Log
This Tharp guy was an early settler in the region who made his house out of a fallen Sequoia. And the house is still there (original, I guess).

Tharp's Log interior
Not too big, even by Silicon Valley apartment standards. But the rent was cheap and beat's sleeping out in the rain.

Upper Crescent Meadow
This is at the far end of the meadow, near Tharp's Log (it's across the way there). I had gone that way to scout a trail back along the other side). I couldn't convince anybody to join me though. The meadow did look pretty much the same as it did from the trail in along the other side. But I think this route was more meadowy.

Michael and Sequoia Roots
I don't recall seeing this, so it must have been on the alternate trail that I didn't take back from Tharp's Log. Photo courtesy of Alberto

Sequoia alongside Crescent Meadow
There were a few trees right on the edge of the meadow.

Crescent Meadow
One last time...

Crescent Meadow
...just had to throw in one more picture.

Overlook at Crystal Cave
I'm guessing that's where this was taken. Photo courtesy of Alberto

Crystal Cave
I returned home on Sunday. On Monday, the remaining WMers visited the Crystal Caves. Photo courtesy of Alberto

Buck eating breakfast near campsite
Maybe dinner. Nice set of velvt-covered horns. Photo courtesy of Alberto
Loch Lomond (Sep Hike)

Loch Lomond
View of the lake from the trail near the start of the hike.

A fork in the trail
Waiting for somebody to catch up, or, to decide which way to go. There are lots of branches off the trail that drop down to the lakeshore, only to rejoin the trail shortly thereafter. After a while, we figured out there was really only one trail and we just picked the route that looked most interesting or least uphill.

Map reading 101
Definitely figuring out which way to go...

Now we're cooking
Anne, Scott, Alberto, and Jay walking through the woods. Some of the finest examples of
Arbutus menziesii to be found.

lakeshore
Seems like this was near the end of the portion of trail that followed the lakeshore. There was a nice picnic area there, which we foolishly bypassed to get to the "panoramic point."

Steve
...heading uphill after the trail left the lake. At least I think that's Steve.

More WMers
Steve, Scott, Anne, and Stacy

Loch Lomond from "Crappy Spot for Lunch Pt"
aka "Panorama Point" (I think it was called). We all share the blame for passing by the picnic tables below. Now we know. The view was good from up here, though.

Beautiful Madrone tree
This nice tree sat on the top of the hill at panorama pt. where we stopped for lunch. You can see the weather reporting equipment (alledgedly) behind the fenced area in the background.

Lunch site
Another view after others had caught up (or got in the picture).

wider shot
Same place.

Relaxing lunch stop
Joan, Gina, with Anne relaxing in the background. That's Barb hiding behind the tree branches.

Barbara
A better picture of Barbara. Ed was busy watching football, or something :-).

Mmmmm. Brownies
I say we have Gina lead more hikes since she brings good stuff to eat!

Scott...
...ready to depart after lunch.

Group back at the parking lot
I don't seem to take many pictures on the way back, for some reason.

Dog friendly hikers
3 dogs on this hike (Raleigh is standing next to the photographer). A record (tied) for W.M., probably.

Panorama
View from the infamous Panorama point.
