MARCH 2012  PRICES SUBJECT TO CHANGE!
NEW WILDLIFE MANAGER’S SEED LIST
Special spring and summer seed you can plant after danger of frost is past.

MAGIC CARPET (50 lb.) The # 1 selling deer mix in the south.  Over 300,000 seed per 50 lbs.  A rich carpet of food for deer provided by atomic soybeans, cowpeas and buckwheat with sorghum and sunflowers. $45.

THE ULTIMATE - expensive but oh so good! - contains giant forage soybeans backed by Sunn Hemp and Iron and Clay peas. This is the most nutritious deer plot seed mix on the market today. Easy to plant, drought resistant, withstands heavy browsing. If you’re serious about attracting and holding deer on your property plant the Ultimate. 50 lb. bag per acre.  $79.
“Our New Ultimate Features Sunn Hemp”

“DEER THRIVE ON SUNN HEMP” Sunn Hemp is known as “Deer Dynamite”.  The leaves are 30% protein.  As a comparison, alfalfa is only 18-20.  During summer months, deer need protein for weight gain, antler growth, milk production and overall herd health.  It can be planted alone or in a summer deer plot mix.  The best part of this food plot--besides attracting deer who grow larger racks and raise healthier fawns is the fact that it supplies the Nitrogen and organic matter for your winter food plot.  Call for the FREE fact sheet on Sunn Hemp. It’s awesome!  5 lb bags $25.

ATOMIC SOYBEANS (50 lb.) The smaller the soybeans, the more quickly they absorb water and germinate. The small size of the Atomic soybean means you get double the coverage, a big savings.  A 50 lb. bag will plant twice as much as other 50 lb bags of soybeans.  Planted alone or with a true forage soybean and sorghum makes a terrific deer plot. $29.

NEW GIANT FORAGE SOYBEANS (50 lb.)  Bred for cattle grazing, these new super large fast growing leafy green soybeans feature 25% to 35% protein.  “Deer can’t keep up with them”.  They keep growing even as they put on pods.  $49.
(They are the perfect deer soybean. (See page 250 in Kammermyer’s Quality Food Plot book.)

PLANTING TIPS FOR WILDLIFE MANAGERS

We highly recommend the excellent Quality Deer Management Food Plot Book by Mr. Kent Kammermeyer.  We offer it for only $25.  Normally it retails for $39.  It gives superb advice and we basically offer all seed in the book.  Here is a very brief guide to get you started.

HOW DEEP TO PLANT?

For all summer seed, (cowpeas, soybeans, sunflowers, buckwheat, chufa etc.) plant about 1 ½  inches deep.  Drill or spinn spread and disc in lightly. Only exceptions:  millets, American Joint Vetch (Aeschynomene), Alyce Clover.  Sow these and drag over lightly about a  ¼ inch.

TIME OF PLANTING?  ITS ALL ABOUT MOISTURE!

You’re not planting a spring garden!  Anytime after the danger of frost is past from Easter thru August are good times to plant for deer.  In the fall plant naked oats, clovers, lupine and winter peas. As a practical matter we like to plant right after a rain when you have moisture and warmth to make seed come up quickly.

FERTILIZER

The good news is that summer legume plants like peas, soybeans, sunn hemp and Alyce clover which deer love and are our specialty, make their own nitrogen.  Winter plants need more fertilizer.

Get a sample of your soil.  Just scoop off top two inches and plug it in several locations, mix and turn in a big cup full to your Clemson agent.  They will tell you if you need lime and how much fertilizer to apply.  Four bags of 19-9-19 per acre is normally plenty.

INOCULATION YES OR NO

Yes on Aeschynomene and Alyce Clover.  No, not essential on cowpeas, soybeans, Sunn Hemp and other seed.

PLANT BOTH IN SHADE AND FULL SUN

Almost all summer planting for deer do well in shade and full sun.  Especially Aeschynomene is excellent under trees.  So is Sunn Hemp and Magic Carpet.  Only wildflowers require full sun.

PLANT ENOUGH SEED!

Drill about 1 ½   50 lb bags per acre of Magic Carpet and the Ultimate. Spread 2 bags per acre. For Sunn Hemp alone, 15 lbs per acre. For specific recommendations on each seed ask us or look it up in the QDMA book.
