Dear Ward One Friends,
The Ward One ANC Redistricting Task Force held its final meeting on Monday, October 3rd, where it approved a resolution recommending to the Council a new 4-ANC map as its primary plan for the next decade and a new 5-ANC map as an alternate plan, as required by statute, for the Council's further consideration. This website was originally created to display various ANC and SMD redistricting proposals for the Ward, but has now been completed by the addition of the final maps referenced in the Task Force's resolution.
All maps can be seen by clicking on the "Pictures & Video" tab above (http://ward1ancredistricting.shutterfly.com/pictures). For the reader's convenience, a new album has been created showing the 11 final maps considered and approved by the Task Force on October 3rd. Reflecting the Task Force's approval of the 4-ANC map as its primary recommendation, a Ward map showing the proposed boundaries of the 4 ANCs is posted first, followed by SMD maps for each of the 4 ANCs. The 5-ANC alternate map is posted next, with the SMD maps for those 5 ANCs shown after that.
The 4-ANC primary plan involves fairly minimal changes from the status quo -- essentially, 4 census blocks moved from ANC 1B to ANC 1A. The alternate 5-ANC plan would create a new Georgia Avenue Corridor ANC, affecting the boundaries of ANCs 1A and 1B in the process. ANCs 1C and 1D have the same ANC and SMD boundaries in both the 4- and 5-ANC plans.
The Task Force resolution was approved by a vote of 10 to 0 (with 1 abstention), and followed a series of four public meetings -- on August 2nd, September 13, September 22, and September 27 -- at which various options and proposals were discussed at length. A Task Force report is due to be submitted to the Council's Subcommittee on Redistricting and to Ward One Councilmember Jim Graham next week. Stay tuned to your favorite Ward One Yahoo group or neighborhood newspaper for additional news about the ANC/SMD redistricting process in Ward One and throughout the District.
A hearty thank you to all members of the Task Force and the public who participated constructively in this process. Our unanimous vote last Monday night illustrates that as difficult and contentious as matters like this may be, it is possible to achieve consensus when responsible and caring individuals come to the table with the intention of working together for the common good of all Ward One residents. The Task Force members are listed below.
For those who are interested in commenting on the outcome, the Forum tab above will enable you to share your thoughts with others in the Ward. (Let's try to keep the dialogue civil and constructive, okay?)
Thanks for your consideration,
Alan Roth
