Wide Open Spaces - Alaska 2009 - Seward

Seward Notes

Seward is a beautiful small town (pop. 3,000) on Resurrection Bay surrounded by mountain peaks.  We stayed three nights at the Holiday Inn with a room facing the small boat harbor, what a great view!

On Thursday, we took a nine hour tour of Kenai Fjords National Park.....  one word - AWESOME!!!  And on Friday, we checked out the Bear Creek salmon weir, hiked to Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park, visited the Alaska Sealife Center, and drove around the area.  I have separate pages for Kenai Fjords, Exit Glacier, and Alaska Sealife Center.

We had several delicious seafood dinners along the waterfront at Chinook's and Ray's.  (Yes... we had crab!!!!)  Both are situated on the harbor with great views of the fishing boats and their catch.

Spawning Salmon

Silver salmon were starting to spawn.  We found this fascinating and stopped every chance to check out a river or creek.

For those that don't know, salmon are hatched in fresh water lakes or streams where they stay about a year.  Then, the salmon travel down stream to the open ocean and live in salt water for about 4 years.  At that time, they return upstream to lay their eggs and die.  This is an amazing life cycle.
