Welcome to my studio.

This "virtual" studio contains photos of works produced in my actual studio -WiWoStudio. It doesn't contain photos of ALL of my work, but there is a good representation of all the work I produce - pottery/ceramics (both traditional and raku), paintings (acrylic), sculpture and mixed media pieces.

Pictures in the albums are arranged "newest to oldest".

It also contains  one video and a link to another video that is actually on my Facebook page.  The first video is of a raku firing and product movie that Michael produced for me. In the future, videos will be shorter and more concise.....(I promise!).  The second video is of me constructing a large ceramic sculpture called "Balancing Act". You'll see what it's called that. Thank heaven Mark uploaded it, since Michael is away at college and I can't figure out how to do this myself!!!

If you are interested in purchasing any of my art, you can see some of it in person at THE ART GROUP GALLERY (a 501(c)3 non-profit cooperative of local artists) in Mt. Jackson, Virginia. The gallery's website is: Theartgroup.org. (There is a Google map at the bottom of this page.) It is NOW located in the new Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Center: BSCAC.org. We're  also on Facebook (just FB search Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Center)!

I also have a few selected pieces at the Woodstock Cafe & Shoppes: cafeshoppes.com! Ask Carlolyn to show you.

Pieces pictured in this virtual gallery may have already been sold, but I constantly create and update my selection at THE ART GROUP GALLERY and here, in my virtual studio!

If you want to contact me directly, my email is: wiwoart@gmail.com

Yep...another broken pot. BIG TIME! But again, it was so cool that I put it back together. I liked the breaks so much that I highlighted them with with liquid gold leaf and then added some dots here and there! Then I rubbed the whole pot with a little black iron oxide to get into the cracks and tone down the gold. Finally, Johnson's wax (4 coats).

I'm definitely going to try this again. Love the effect, but as you can tell by the name......broken in the kiln. Epoxy is my new best friend.

Same run, came out whole. Used a commercial red over a homemade white crackle. I'm not thrilled with the red. I want more drama.

Same kiln run but this didn't break. I've found that the oak sawdust makes the heaviest carbon so far. I used a lithium slip and a white crackle on this one.

Clean break halfway, so I intentionally broke it in half completely so I could epoxy it back together.

This piece broke in the raku kiln. But it was so interesting that I put it back together. Peel away slip with heavy smoke reduction and  copper glaze applied to previously masked squares and top sculpture.

This is a handbuilt sculpture. I Built a single very tall rectangle, then cut it apart when it was leather-hard. I inserted steel rods into some sections and then bisqued. Various glazes, then into the raku kiln and heavily reduced in oak sawdust. Assembled and epoxy to attach everything to the base.

This the August run waiting to go into the raku kiln. It was in the mid-nineties even at 5pm when we started to fire. I was sweating bullets and so were Laura and Vic!!

New technique!!! Love it. I put colored slip on newspaper and when it's almost dry I flip it onto the green pot and roll it into the clay. Way cool!!! This pot is about 12" tall.

Wearable Art

patchwork bag.jpg
patchwork bag.jpg
Using the pieces that were large enough to sew into patchwork. The last piece of "wearable art" I could make out of this canvas!!
patchwork bag other view.jpg
patchwork bag other view.jpg
just another view of the patchwork bag
the end.jpg

I took these pieces and mounted them on a stretched canvas. I'll use this as a base and will make a collage. Then I will bring  in the completed "unwearable art" piece (hahaha) when I bring the other pieces to the gallery.

The Journey

Happy New Year

The new year has started out to be pretty productive. I have been trying some new techniques on my traditional pottery. Sometimes it works.....other times.............not so much. Overall, I'm getting some pretty interesting results, though.
I also painted a 30" x 40" (unframed) version of the Mangled Mannequin: Ms. Bigg Butt. It's fun. Christal Prout of the music duo "Chatham Street" now has the original Ms. Butt. I'm also in the process of doing a kind of mono-print on clay slab with the Ms. Butt as the subject. I'll let you know how THAT goes.
Here's to a fun and productive 2012.

moving along..............slowly

A few more pictures of sculptures and raku. There is another LARGE sculpture in the works, but it will be a few weeks until it's finished. In the meantime, check out The Art Group Galleries (located in the Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Center) in Mount Jackson, Virginia for not only my work, but the work of nearly 30 other artists.

New technique

I just posted a few new pics in "traditional pottery". It's a new technique called mocha diffusion. It involves using a "super slip" that you apply to green leatherhard pottery. Then mix pigment with vinegar and drop/dribble/draw in the wet super slip. The vinegar (acid) reacts with the clay in the slip and pulls the pigment along with it.
I haven't gotten the process down yet, as the slip makes the greenware so soft that it deforms. I'll keep experimenting until I figure out how to get more consistent results.

there....

I got the miscellaneous album problem fixed. No more action on this site for a while.

apologies.............

So somehow I have managed to create a TOTALLY new miscellaneous album. And...I am too annoyed to try to fix it. Just click on the NEWEST one (that would be the one nearest the top) to see the new works. You know....sometimes I wonder about myself. Other times....I worry me. Right now, I just want a glass of wine................................................

Gear UP!!!!

So, I'm finally getting back on track. Finished up a load of traditional pottery over the weekend, fired the raku kiln AND finished up a mixed media piece that has been languishing for a while and created a new one. So look in the traditional pottery and the raku pottery albums. I am going to add the mixed media pieces to the Miscellaneous Album.

As an aside....everyone should know that The Art Group Galleries (theartgroup.org) are now located in the Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Center in Mt. Jackson. Our new digs are STUNNING. If you do Facebook, search for Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Center and have a look. We also have a website under development....bscac.org. In any case, TAGG and BSCAC are both 501c3 non-profits trying to bring the arts to everyone. Please think about supporting them in some way. Lots of great art outreach going on. I'm proud to be a part of it.

Whoooo Hoooooooo...................

Just finished up a load of traditional pottery and will have it in the gallery by tomorrow afternoon. I used a new HVLP sprayer that I got as a Christmas present and it produces awesome results. There are green raku pieces waiting for a bisque firing, but I need to throw a few more pieces before I get to that. In any case, check out the "traditional pottery" album to see what's been added. (This warm weather sure makes a difference in my productivity!)

Slowly, but surely...

It's been a little slow in the studio what with the cold weather (and attendant frozen water lines, etc), but I do have some pottery in the pipeline. Hopefully, I'll be able to have enough to do a bisque firing sometime before the end of this month. In the meantime, I've been painting (since I can do that while wearing a PARKA!!!!). The latest is a diptych called Spring Thaw. You can tell where my mind has been! Unfortunately, I am having camera/lighting issues and the photos that I'll put in my "acrylics on canvas" album won't really show the lighting. It's a shame, because they really do have the feel of the spring thaw when there's still snow up high in the mountains but the bottom land is all wet and squishy. Oh well....you'll just have to come to The Art Group Gallery to see them as they actually are. Each canvas is 30"x40", so the set is over 5 feet long with the frames. Hey....if I'm going to paint, I'm going to paint BIG!

Finally...........

I just put up some pictures of new raku and traditional pottery as well as of three new acrylic paintings. Things have been a little slow in the studio due to frozen water lines and time commitments at the BSCAC. But, after the first of the year, I should get back on schedule with production.

new stuff coming up

I've been able to get some new work underway in addition to teaching the first adult claywork class at the BSCAC. It went really well. New espresso cup sets are at The Art Group Galleries at the BSCAC and some will soon be in the Woodstock Cafe. No new pictures yet, but hopefully soon.

alrighty then.....

So yesterday was no better. BUT!!!! Today was the payback. Whew. 4 large raku pieces thrown and 16 new espresso sets (not out of raku clay). If I can keep this up, there will be new pieces for the gallery by the middle of October. Ahhhhhh......................

Excited...ummmmm...not so much.

So I was really stoked that my last run of raku turned out and my espresso cups nearly sold out in less than 8 hours after hitting the gallery. The mudgods are punishing me for my good fortune! I spent the ENTIRE day trying out a new raku clay and got ...nada...absolutely NOTHING!!! UGH!!! I will try again tomorrow and, with luck, be able to post pics of GREAT NEW WORKS.....in a few weeks...or months????

PS -

Just added the pic of the "missing piece". Laura Fogle (aka - MudDog, Clay Slave,...) stopped in and we unloaded the glazed wares from the kiln. Laura is an ersatz student here and her work is developing incredibly quickly! She had 8 pieces in this run and they turned out just great. My pieces also turned out! I made a set of 8 espresso cups/saucers...plus other stuff...but the espresso cups are really cute!! I'll post pics of the traditional stuff tomorrow.

Whew....

I fired the raku kiln yesterday and got some great results. I also bisque fired the electric kiln last week, glaze fired last week and glaze fired again yesterday. The last glaze load is still in the kiln, but as soon as it comes out, I'll get pictures of everything and post that under the traditional pottery album above. I've already posted pics of the raku from yesterday. Hopefully, I'm back on track. I'm trying some new clays next week and have been mixing up some new glazes. Some of those are ok and some are pretty blah. It's fun making my own, though!
OK...so keep your eyes on this page in the coming days for more "stuff". By the way....the gallery (TAGG) is now located in the new Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Center at 5998 Main Street in Mt. Jackson, Virginia. Follow the BSCAC on Facebook!!!

As promised...

Well, the grand opening of the Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Center was SPECTACULAR!!! So many friends showed up AND....they KEEP showing up!!! The number of visitors to the center and The Art Group Galleries (notice the plural here!!!!! we now have FOUR galleries in the new center!) is astounding. Thank you everyone.
So...now down to business. I work at the center every Monday and one other day (minimum), but that leaves me time for the studio. In the last week, I have made 14 espresso sets for Lucas Roasting Company, 6 sgrafitto pots and 3 raku pots. NOT FINISHED mind you. Just started. I plan to bisque fire this coming week and continue to work the wheel. Hopefully, in a month or so, I'll be back up to a decent inventory and then can actually start building my new raku kiln that has been on the drawing board for over a year..............sigh............
If I manage, I'll get a pic of the unbisqued sgrafitto pots. They look pretty cool.
Thanks for hanging in with me.

HOLD THAT THOUGHT!!!!

I apologize for letting things get stale here. However, I have been up to my eyeballs in alligators getting the new Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Center ready to open!! The grand opening is August 7th from 10am till 8pm. There will be music, art, food.....think of it as a block party!! If you are interested, we have a website - bscac.org -(pretty rudimentary) with a link to our Facebook page! http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pages/The-Bowman-Shannon-Cultural-Arts-Center/122762971082804. (LINKS APPEAR AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE)
Once the grand opening is over, I'll be back to the studio and will continue to add to this site!
Thanks.

More!

I have finally caught up on photographing and posting pictures of all of my latest pottery (raku and traditional). The new pieces haven't hit the gallery yet. That will take a little while. Hopefully, though, they'll all be available by the end of May. Until then, you'll just have to contact me directly for information.

Finally...

It's been a while since I've posted any pictures (mainly because I've gotten lazy!). In any case, I just added new raku pictures. There should be a few more in the coming week. I also unloaded a full kiln of traditional pottery. Hopefully, pictures of those pieces will be up within a couple of weeks.
Thanks for following along and I promise to try to do better about posting pictures....(maybe I'll even work on videos!!!)

newest pottery pics up

Raku and electric kiln (traditional) pottery pics added. Check each of the albums.

latest raku pics up

Go to the raku album and look for the first (most recently added) 9 pics.

So all of the pics that are called "broken dreams" (except for the first sculptural piece which was actually meant to be called that before I even started...) are pieces that broke in the raku kiln or from the shock of coming out and cooling too quickly. I put them back together because they were interesting and I think they have some merit just as eye-candy. However....don't even THINK about putting liquids in these!!!!!! (hahaha)

oops

So out of 9 pieces, 4 survived intact. Oh well.....I was pushing the limits on a few things and experimenting with different slip apps. Needless to say............I may not be repeating some of the things we tried. The ones that went to pieces are pretty interesting though. I put them back together sort of like a puzzle. Thought provoking.......but NOT capable of holding liquids (haha).
Pics to be posted within a week.

Another raku firing

We're going to do another firing this afternoon starting around 5pm. It's currently 3:45 and it's 95degrees out. So waiting is a good idea. Still using the small kiln, but plan to build the larger top-hat by the end of September. Between the floorcloths and the wearable art, I got a little backed up.
This firing, will have some more experiments with glaze/firing techniques and reduction combustibles. If things go well, we may have a short video clip to add in a couple of days as well as some pictures.

DONE!!!!

I just finished the second floorcloth (picture in the floorcloth album above). It still has to be sealed and hemmed, but the folks at Friends of the North Fork will do that. I hope this helps them raise money for the cause. The North Fork of the Shenandoah is a wonder of nature that deserves all the protection we can give.

Continuing saga of the floorcloth

So...I'm working on the bigger floorcloth for the Friends of the North Fork fundraiser. This is taking a WEE bit longer than I anticipated. But..............it's coming along. The only problem is that is has taken my attention away from building my tophat kiln. No worries. It will get done by fall. As soon as I finish the floorcloth, I'll post a picture.

Latest undertaking

I finished the first of two floorcloths for the Friends of the North Fork of the Shenanadoah River  fundraising auction (to be held in October at the annual Fish Fry). It's a small one (about 30"x30") and there's a picture above. I haven't gotten the canvas to make the second one yet. It will be significantly different and larger.

Video!

Michael finished the video and posted it last night. It is a long one. The first half is about the actual firing. The second half is "show and tell" of the product. A BIG thanks to Michael for creating the movie out of a real mish-mash of video.

Done!

I just put up pictures of the newest raku pieces. I plan on getting the video of some of the firing and "show and tell" up here by tomorrow morning at the latest. The pictures don't show "all sides" etc, but at least you can get an idea of what I ended up with! I had to rearrange the old raku photos, too, so that I could start giving them date labels. Sorry for the mess.

raku firing

Whew!
Vicki Palmerton (my right hand/raku bud) and I started firing at 4:15pm. We didn't finish until after 9pm. We had some GREAT glaze results but also some REALLY bad breakage. We figured out why, though. I bisqued my stuff to ^04 (in order to save some time and $$ by putting it in with some traditional pottery). Bad idea. It vitrified the clay too much. So, we got more breakage and less carbon sinking on the unglazed areas. That said, we REALLY learned some important lessons about raku.
This firing was all about experimenting. I started making a video which I'll finish up tomorrow by showing the finished products. Once it's done, I'll post it. I'll also post pics of the pieces that actually survived as well as the "shards" of the pieces that didn't.
We did a "naked raku" pot. BIG thumbs up on that. A horse hair pot...again big thumbs up. Also terra sig pots with different glaze applications that were really nice. Actually, all of the glazes turned out beautifully. It was just the clay body that tripped us up. Not all of the pieces were made of "raku" clay. I used a red earthenware and a buff earthenware that I had grogged. Both PROBABLY would have done ok, had I not bisqued them so high.
Bottom line - it was worth the failures to learn about the new techniques.
Stay tuned for pics and video within the next couple of days.

Getting there!

I have put up a lot more pics. Some are not great quality, but at least you can see what I'm doing. Next Tuesday, we're doing a raku firing (the most fun you can have setting fires in trashcans!!!!!) and I'm going to try to get Michael to video it and then edit and upload it. It's .....ummm.....an "interesting" process.

doing the shutterfly thing

OK....you are either family or REALLY good friends, so you are expected to realize that I'm new at this and am trying REALLY hard. This is all Jenny's fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
