Brownie and Bossy Agreed That It Was Okay For You To See Their Photos.

How It All Started!

I never fed the deer in the beginning.  At that time the dogs were running the woods with Pokie (a.k.a. Devil Dog, a neighbor's dog who was all white and too pretty to resist) and Black Jack ruling all its inhabitants. The farm dog gang (Jack, LB, Nug, Pokie, and her sibling) were becoming ruthless murderers especially during the killing month (June) when the wildlife babies and fawns were born.  This was evident when a dangling leg bone would be displayed in his huge jaws (Jack had the largest mouth I have ever seen in a dog!) as though it were a trophy. My good husband told me years later about a little fawn carcass found near the yard, so, no wonder the deer never got close to the house!  After Jack passed, I began to see them when I rode the horses in the big field and the little fawns would think the horses were playmates and prance behind us.  Thankfully, my horses are level headed and my bones were spared from the hard ground resulting from a quick shy, rear, buck or whatever horses choose to do the moment they are surprised.  One spring about three years ago, two little fawns would show themselves in the 'deer yard' close to the pond.  (it wasn't a deer yard then).  I was amazed at one who would trot out and then dart back to the brush for safety.  It was then that I decided to help out that winter and throw corn under the thick brush above the pond where they seemed bed down.  I believe those babies were Brownie and Bossy.  Brownie will get very close to me and just stare while I croon, telling her how beautiful she is, while Bossy always keeps a little distance between us just as they did as fawns!
